Got this message from Eric Keim, who is the course pro at the Valley View Park course in Altoona.
Hey fellow disc golfers,
Sorry I haven’t had much time to send out much info lately. But there has been a lot of disc golf related things happening. Nine baskets have been placed in Shawnee State Park near Bedford/Schellsburg, PA. The first tee is near the Boat rental building. Barrett Schrock is the course contact for the Shawnee course. He has emailed me about trying to get a club up in the Bedford area. Check out the website at: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ShawneeDGC/
Also on new course agenda, I have the design phase of 9 holes at Prince Gallitzin State Park finished. Dan Bickle park manager and Matt Green asst. park manager are very excited about bringing disc golf to their/our park at Prince Gallitzin. Working with Dan’s aerial photos and GPS unit have been handy tools in course designing. Although, gadgets are nice the thrill is getting out in the thick of things and exploring the land for potential disc golf holes. At this point I would like to invite anyone interested, especially anyone with a portable basket, to come play the layout in its rough form on Sunday July 27 between 11 am and noon. I am interested in getting feed back from fellow golfers on the layout. Most of the holes will be wooded some along existing grassy paths that get little to no usage. Two large open fields, which are used for parking during Apple Cider Days will also be utilized for some long airy shots. Please let me know if anyone can make it to Prince Gallitzin State Park on Sunday. The course is located in the Muskrat Beach area of the park. Park in lot number 2, with the course starting near the right corner of the lot. Anyone needing directions email or call me or the park office, which is open 8-4.
Dan and Matt are interested in some volunteer help for this course. Park employees will be doing the major tree cutting, mowing and machine related work. What they would like from us disc golfers is assistance in hauling brush and other tasks as needed. It is nice to work with park managers that are interested in disc golf. Soon there will be another course up and playable in Central Pa , (filling the void).
Also this year there will be no tournament at Bob’s private course near Osterburg. If anything changes I’ll let you know.
I haven't checked on or been contacted about Canoe Creek lately. Something else I'll check on in the near future.
Did anyone see the sports section of the Altoona Mirror today July 22, 2008? Kelly Goodman wrote an article about Disc Golf. I encourage everyone to read it. At least disc golf is getting some print in our area. Her contact info is also listed at the bottom of the article. Kelly is also on the Blair County Park Board. So this would be a good time to contact her and discuss your feelings on disc golf and the Valley View Park Disc Golf Course.
Again please let me know if you can make it to Prince Gallitzin this Sunday or just show up. If there is anyone who can’t make it but could help out by lending me some portable baskets for playing the course that would be greatly appreciated. I have one basket but if we could get multiple baskets it would make playing the course easier.
Thanks for all the people who have responded to my emails. Please forward this email to any of your friends who have interest in disc golf. Replies to emails are always appreciated. It’s nice to know that there are people out there in cyber space.
Until next time - keep them on the fairway.
