Well, the West Texas and Eastern New Mexico area is about to get another course. Portales (20 miles south of Clovis, 105 miles NW of Lubbock, 125 miles SW of Amarillo, 230 miles SE of Albuquerque)just received 18 brand new baskets (June 23, 2008). Jarrad Doerr and friends are the coordinators. The present course in an object course. Jarrad and friends have re-desined the course that will incorporate many of the trees, a high point, and a pit located in the park. The city appears to be fully behind the project. More later....

I spoke with Jarrad today. He said that baskets are in the ground. He is planning to adjust some tee pads and to also make some mowed fairways (higher and lower grass). He said that a pit comes into play on three holes. I'm not familiar with the final layout, but may get to play it in a few months....more later.

I got to play the Portales course last week (August 15). Yep, the baskets are in! Jarrad and friends did a pretty good job of using the area well. The course is worth a stop if in the area. If so, contact me and I can give a description of the course layout, etc.

The Portales group has been changing a little. Also, they changed up the course somewhat (I've not played it in the new configuration). The plan is to get things a little organized, etc. and then for them (and Clovis) to host a mini - event on June 6, 2009. I'll send out some flyers soon for anyone interested. Likely we'll play Portales (18) twice and then head up to Clovis (9) and play it twice. John S said that he could probably work a deal for cooking some food at the Clovis course.

June 6th is a go for Portales. John and Sam are working on the Portales course to be able to host the area players. I'm sure 'the King' (Braxton) is helping also.

Actually, the plan is to play two rounds at Portales (18 mostly open holes) and then a short drive up to Clovis for two rounds (short nine holes).

UPDATE - Registration is from 8:00-to before 9:00. The Portales portion and the Clovis portion will be seperate events ($10 advance, $5 rec is what is on the flyer). The Portales format will be a semi-random doubles. 'Up' players will be paired with 'down' players randomly by using cards. There are nine holes for play. Two rounds will be played. Then off to lunch and drive to Clovis (well north of Clovis to Ned Houk Park). Singles (divisions) will played on the nine hole course. There will be two rounds of 'front nine' and then a round of 'back nine'. There will be water available (no food at this time). Portales and Clovis players have played many of the area tournements....let's support their event!

Wiiiindy was the challenge of the day. Sam and John did a semi-random doubles in Portales. Rocky and Julie took first by many strokes. Second to Matt and Braxton. There was a tie for third (not sure whom). We moved up to Clovis and played three rounds of nine with a little less wind. I think Rocky and Matt tied for first, me second, not sure of third. Due to late arrivals both events started late...lead card did not get to play together, etc. Sam said that he plans to work on the other nine locations (baskets are in, they just don't have good tee areas) in Portales. He hopes to get some sponsors for concrete pads. There is talk of having a redesign in Clovis and extending to 18 (this would be a really nice park to do so).
