I completely do not agree with the lottery system. This event should be a TOP event for Amateurs, played on some of the TOP courses in the country. With the lottery system, there is no guarantee that the event will even be competitive, and I have a feeling that a bunch of TOP Amateurs will not even get in. There isn't even a criteria of eligibility to ensure it doesn't have a huge variance in skill levels. Was that the intent? Rumors around Charlotte were that this was going to be a major event for amateurs. I don't see where it can be. Buying tickets to increase your odds should never replace skill if the intent is to highlight competition, and grow the sport of disc golf.
Can the list of ticket purchasers be posted, as well as the number of tickets being purchased, be published publicly so we all can see the revenue generated to avoid later rumors or questions concerning the integrity of the payout as advertised? We would all also be able to see the end result of money vs skill level. I'm looking forward to the results on this one, although I am not going to hold my breath for public view of the stats regarding the monies.

i agree that we should know how many tickets are sold and it might even be 'cool' to have a counter to show the added cash growing.
as far as the best of the best playing... you already have the top 3 finishers from the Carolina Clash playing in the tourney... thats a start. Also I would imagine people will be trying to sell themselves as good potential partners in different venues in hopes that someone put in the lottery and doesn't know who they want as a partner.
I imagined people would do that here... i myself will buy into the lottery a couple times (not sure who i'd play with yet) and at the same time will say now that i'll be available should anyone need a partner.
The sticky/interesting thing about the lottery though is that lets say you and I want to be partners... we both buy into the lottery in hopes that our team can represent... we both get picked as captains... we are not longer partners and need to find other partners. so there is some 'strategery' involved as well.
I personally am interested to see how deep into the 07' USDGC field the captains will go... between people not being in town yet... people pairing up with other top pros, some just not caring to play, etc.

Polish... i'm curious how you would propose to get the TOP ams in the sport into this event?
cwphish
Jun 10 2008, 05:44 PM
Well, there is a lot of options there. The USADGC appears to do just fine with their criteria, which even allows for anyone to attempt to qualify, but awards spots for those who have proven their competition level thorugh direct competition. Since the pdga does not have any formal doubles series, there is no way to establish a team's rating as a point of criteria. However, a one round play-in would allow for the best scores to be rewarded, and generate revenue for the LARGE AM PAYOUT, while remaining fair to all.
stack
Jun 10 2008, 05:45 PM
Am stuff aside... will be cool to see what pros pair up and who gets in from that side... hope things will be posted as people enter for a few reasons... so pros will know if they have a good shot of getting in and for the 'fans' to get to see some of the potential matchups

Polish,
i don't understand. if the am entry is a lottery how is it bring your own partner?????????????
cwphish
Jun 10 2008, 09:53 PM
The lottery will be for selection of 24 captains from any and all who purchase a $5 lottery ticket. The 24 captains get to pick their own partner. You can buy as many chances as you would like. My understanding is that there is just one big amateur division, with no gender/age/ratings based divisions at all. Those with the most disposable income have the better chance of being drawn as a captain obviously. All of the money generated is to go to the amateur purse in full, which potentially at least could be enormous.

I think the payout should be based on the odds you have before the lottery. The more chances you buy, your payout decreases. Reward the underdog!

When do you pick the captains for the am division? If it is truly a US amateur doubles championship then you would want players from all over and not just the players from the south east. With that said people from farther away would want to know with enough time to make traveling arrangements. Just something to keep in mind.

in theory it could be top 24 people... its invite only for the pro side based on your 2007 USDGC finish. they'll go down the list and talk to each pro and see if they are playing and if they are who with... between the people that dont play or partner up with other top finishers from the previous years USDGC it could go as low as the 40th person as an example.

This is a message from Bill "Burro" Jacobson:
not sure how to respond to all the complaining on how this is being run other to to say that it is the inaugural year for the event & with every new event there will be things learned this year that will be changed in years to come. i am a big part of the decision making process, but not the sole decision maker. the am side is a very difficult field to figure out who plays & who doesn't. the field is very small this year but will probably become larger in the years to come. i can only ask that you bear with us in the infancy of this event, understand that none of the decisions that were made were taken lightly. if you have major concerns feel free to contact me via p.m. or if you have my number you are welcome to call. in closing those of you who feel we are being taken advantage of by the usdgc/innova/zone driven are very far off base all the above entities have been nothing but supportive & have in large part been a big factor in helping us have the courses & great events we have in the charlotte area.

$300 a team is a lot right before USDGC.
at 'only' $150 per player i dont think its that bad... if people were playing the charlotte open which was normally this weekend it would've been over/around 100 bones for that tourney.
again as mentioned... if a pro thinks he's good enough I could see deals being worked out where a lesser player gets to play with a pro bc they are willing to pay more than their 1/2 of the teams entry.
if anything I would think the Pros would see this as a way to make a little extra traveling money for the trip to Rock Thrill
also...
not sure how payout is done but looking @ the payout calculator the PDGA has on its website and putting in those numbers (24 entries @ $300) but it looks like the winning team could be around $2000!!!! (mind you this is not official and i'm not sure how they do payout for doubles but i'm sure it'll be some nice $$$)

those of you who feel we are being taken advantage of by the usdgc/innova/zone driven
I don't think anyone on here thinks we are being taken advantage of. My only issues is this event sounds like and hopefully will be a huge success but it is carrying a name that i don't fill is indicative of the representation. i simply don't find it fair to have people from a local event already qualified for an event that was not announced and few knew about.

Now that we all agree there was communication issues concerning this event during the Clash maybe somone can answer a few questions.
Of the 6 spots that were awarded at the Clash, were there confimations from the 6 winners that they would even be playing in the event? Nothing was said about this during the awards ceremony.
What happens if both team members sign up for the lottery on the am side and both members win a spot? Will the extra spot won become available again?
When will the drawing be? And where? Some folks are going to have to make travel arrangements.
Who will be drawing the winning spots and will there be someone to oversee the drawing to keep it legitimate?
Is there a deadline for entry fees on the am side once the winners are drawn? ala USDGC, and if so what happens if a team doesn't send in thier payment on time? Does the spot become available again? If so how do they determine who gets the spot? Maybe drawing extra names somewhat like a waiting list?
Will the number of lottery tickets purchased be posted anywhere to see how many are trying to win a spot, and to figure what the odds are and exactly how much money will be added to the am purse?

i have a lot of questions myself but here are some answers to ones I do know...
Rick...
-Crump was there at the players meeting on Sunday morning and fliers were posted all around the pavilion then about the event... they also announced the spots @ the awards ceremony and everyone confirmed then and there... actually monty/dee were going to have to playoff for their spot but dee and derf will be playing together so he declined. Also an intermediate declined as well.
-i answered this one earlier... crump said if 2 people plan on playing together and both enter the lottery and 'win' then they are both captains and cant play together... not sure about what would happen if one declined... i would say the safe bet would be to only have 1 partner put into the lottery making it a moot point.
-the other questions are some of the same ones I have as well.
same w/ you Jeff... not sure on the size... you can easily fit 4 groups on a card and 24 seems to be a random # at that.

There was a 2-way tie for second at the Clash. Monty and I both wanted to play. Derf asked me who I would play with and I said "You". It only made sense to me to turndown my Capt. spot. Monty wins by default and we can both play.

Ideally, we would have known and disseminated all of the details. What we are trying to do now is to communicate the right information as practicably as possible. The questions here will help us to identify some of the key information. Please keep the questions coming. We will do our best to get them answered in a timely fashion, and when possible, include our reasoning. Often folks find it helpful to understand the reasoning whether they agree or disagree with the particular decision.
Following are answers to some of the questions that have been posted.
Why two sets of 24 teams? As correctly pointed out by Sjur (I believe), competitors are making a serious investment in USDGC Doubles. We wanted to give everyone a full playing experience, including the chance for all to play doubles on the Gold course. Tanner correctly points out that Sunday will be a big practice day for singles too. We did not feel like we could accommodate 72 teams and allow for singles practice too, and we did not want a cut. That is why we chose 48 total teams.
As for the Captains, they can choose anyone, including another Captain. If one of the top 24 plays with another, the next highest finisher from last year's Championship would then become a Captain. Similarly, if one of the Captains, chooses not to play doubles, another Captain will be selected based on last year's performance. I am not holding my breath to become a captain, but I am looking forward to some great doubles play.
In closing, I would like to echo Bill (burro). Like almost every aspect of the USDGC, we will look to learn from our experience, and improve the following year.
Take care,
Harold

I will echo the same setiment as said before on this thread, How can this be called THE US DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS when only 24 teams from both the PRO and AM divisions will play and that is by lottery or how you finished at the USDGC.
AS for AMS - When 1/4 of the alotted teams come from a qualifier that is one tournament, that already suggest that it will not be a "WHOLE" representation of the country. An example would be NC has 6 representatives and the rest of the country will have approximately 1 for every 3 states. Yes, AM WORLD DOUBLES is in TEXAS, but it is open to ALL world participants.
AS for PROS - not all top-notch individual finishers at the USDGC or even at the WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIPS are top-notch doules players. An example would be the Bryan brothers in tennis, they are nowhere near the top 10 in the sport in singles, but are #1 in the world in doubles...Tiger Woods has never won a doubles championship in golf, but is the #1 in the world in his sport. Yes, some of the top players will be contending for this event, but probably the best will be left out. In 15 years of coaching tennis in high school, only once did my #1 player play #1 doubles. Singles is a totally different mentallity than doubles.
I am not sure how you correct this event now since the information is already out, but I do know that most perceive this event as a NC event, not as a US event. Maybe you need to have some qualifying events around the WHOLE country for the captains, instead of just in NC.
Before anybody ask, No, I will not be coming. I am a school teacher and school is already in session at this time.

Dear Paul,
I agree with you. I am not sure what we should do now, but it does remind me of a recent discussion I had with my eldest teenage son. Cody and I discussed the fact that there are many situations that are unfair, imprecise, or uncertain. The best advice I could provide my firstborn was to do his best. My guess is that you offer similar advice to your tennis players when they face an imperfect court, a biased official, or an unfair seeding.
The inaugural USDGC had a regional bent. Over time, the Championship field has become more representative. We will do our best to see that this happens over time for the doubles event too.
Take care,
Harold

FYI... update on the USDGC website...
http://www.usdgc.com/06/13/61308-us-doubles-update
US Doubles Championship Information
Let’s start with the issue that probably caused the most questions, and deservedly so. The US Doubles event is NOT a major championship as the name may suggest. This competition will be more informal, geared towards providing USDGC competitors an important warm up for the actual US Championship. It will also provide a select number of amateur players an opportunity to test and compare their skills among the game’s elite.
Captains for the professional division will be based on results from the previous year’s USDGC. The top 24 finalists will have an opportunity to captain a team of their choice. Should someone be uninterested or unable to play, the 25th place finisher will have the opportunity. And so on, and so on.
Eligible pro captains are being contacted now and will be expected to accept or decline as quickly as possible. Confirmed captains do not need to name their partner at this time. We will wait until later in the summer to announce who is partnering with whom. Registration may take place as soon as captains are ready to declare. Captains looking to register should call the tournament office at 800.476.3968.
Captains for the amateur division will be determined via lottery. Since the field is so small, demand for positions will far exceed supply. The lottery format was chosen to provide a fair means of earning an opportunity to play, while generating revenue to support the event. All lottery proceeds benefit the amateur field exclusively.
Lottery tickets are currently available. They are $5.00 each and there is no limit to the number that can be purchased. All amateur participants must be current PDGA members, registered in an advanced level division or lower. PDGA professionals may not compete, regardless of current PDGA rating.
The drawing for amateur captains will take place on July 4th. This should allow plenty of time for winners to register and make travel arrangements. Winners will be posted at usdgc.com and will receive email notification. We will provide other interesting stats such as number of tickets sold, money raised, etc. Registration will open immediately.
Since amateurs will have paid for and won the chance to play, am captain status is transferable. Lottery winners may give their position to another player, or even sell/auction the position if they so choose. All teams must be registered no later than August 31.
In contrast, Pro Captain status is NOT transferable. Our tournament staff will contact a player who gains eligibility by someone else declining the opportunity.
We apologize that many of these details were not published clearly at first and that so many have had to wonder about the status of the event. Feel free to contact us with any other questions or concerns regarding US Doubles, or any other aspect of the USDGC.

The key to staying in the Carolinas is not the course but a main Innova branch nearby. Convince Innova it's important to open a branch in Texas and THEN you can talk about moving the USDGC. Or maybe get a sponsor willing to pop at least $100,000 into it.

From JP on USDGC.com...
Due to us being a little slow out of the gates with tournament information, we have decided to push back the deadline for purchasing Am division lottery tickets. The new deadline is Thursday, July 31st. Winners will be announced and contacted on Friday, August 1st.
A people people have asked if they will be receiving an actual lottery ticket. The answer is "no". Everyone is being entered into an electronic database. Names will be chosen randomly from that list.
Others have asked if buying more tickets increases your odds of winning. The answer is "yes". Each person receives an entry, if you will, for each ticket purchased. The more times your name is in the hopper, the better your odds.
That leads us to another popular question... What are my odds? As of today the answer is "pretty darn good", at least in my opinion. Yesterday we had a total of 85 entries from about 25 people. We are drawing for 18 team captains so you can ponder the ageless question, "Do you feel lucky?"
If you do, proceed to the pro shop and get your LOTTERY TICKETS HERE. All proceeds go to the Am division payout. Not pro. Am. So far that adds up to $425 cash added to a field of only 24 teams. I expect that will shape up nicely for those fortunate enough to get in.
So there you have it. If you have questions feel free to drop me an email. Or just post it on a message board somewhere... I'm sure it will reach me one way or the other.

Now that the Captains have been selected I have a question regarding potential partners.
This has been posted since the beginning "All amateur participants must be current PDGA members, registered in an advanced level division or lower. PDGA professionals may not compete, regardless of current PDGA rating."
What exactly constitutes a Professional as far as this tournament is concerned?
Is it just someone who is registered this year as a pro ie. Fred Moran & Buddy tritt, or is it someone who has played in the open division and cashed but still registers as an am?
Thanks for all the help to those running this event. Looking forward to a great weekend of dubs.

Hey Rick -
I will confirm, but I would believe that we will be following the Competition Manual which seems to indicate that you are a professional if you are registered with the PDGA as a Pro (2.3.A.1) or if you are an amateur who has accepted cash while competing in a Pro division (2.4.B.2). These requirements would seem to need to be met up to the event.
Take care,

Not so sure Stack. I believe Bill also has said that no former pros will be allowed to play.
And both the Zonedriven and USDGC sites say no Pros regardless of current PDGA ranking. Plus the fact that this event is not PDGA sanctioned and is being held to a higher standard than the PDGA. The way I interput this is the PDGA amnesty clause will not be in effect for this event.
Guess one of those in charge will have to make the final call though just to clarify.

you'd think they would've had all this cleared up before they
1)announced the tournament
2) took money for the lottery
3) announced winners of the lottery
So if PP can't play are they going to have another drawing and give his money back. Hopefully this will be solved by next year. Looks like they jumped the gun on this one

PRO is where its at!!! :) Going to be some crazy groups!!!
and i think its more local bc of who bought the tickets... there are some out of towners WI, FL... but if we could see who bought tickets and how many (which would've been interesting/nice) then it probably would show that mostly local people bought tickets. Regardless I think we all agree on what you and others are saying BS. I am stoked, it will be my first time on any of the courses. I may try to come up before the event and play a few rounds. But us Fla boys against all the locals will be tough. But I am up for anything!
What was the rule for Am partners, never cashed in Pro or a rating below a certain number?
Thanks,
dthrow
Aug 06 2008, 02:51 PM
I just got off the phone with Bill and was told that I am fine to play AM. I am a PDGA registered Am, who took the amnesty a few years ago. ( now playing right where my rating puts me). I am glad thats cleared up. IF you are registered as a PRO you can not play am regardless of your player rating. Now, i just need to find a partner.

Schweb & anybody would be tough, Schweb & MJ would be a serious contender. Final pairings should be interesting.
As for the doubles record at Renny original. Spring of 2002 had Tony Fisher and Mike Warner shoot a 42 at Disclanding doubles. They went...
2-2-3-2-2-2-2-3-2=20 2-2-2-3-3-2-2-3-3=22
18 played to the location next to the top of the stairs.
8 played to the position at the top of the hill by the road.
We had the scorecard framed and it hung at the store.
2nd place was also on the same card. Dave Leamy and Wheetie shot a 44.

There would be a huge line wanting Schwebbie as a dubs partner for sure, he has been playing some incredible golf this year, but if the line hasn't formed yet.... pick me Schwebb's I have a doubles resume if you need it... :D:D:D:D:D:D

42... disgusting! when we shot our 44 I asked around for a while (mostly to the 'old guys' since they might know) and nobody knew of anything lower. Was the rest of the course pretty much the same other than 8 and 18?
any ideas on records @ ho's nest (could always ask the resident hippy i guess)
and thats the beauty of this event...the crazy matchups on the pro side. And i figured more pros would be lobbying to be partners like Peckham & Craig did on here. Even with 24 spots realistically I could see them easily getting into inviting the someone as low as 40th place between people pairing together @ the top and some pros not playing.

this i know for sure... the captain spots are transferable... if someone can't make it or doesnt want to play they can give, sell, auction off the captain spot.
what i'm unsure of is... i dont think someone can decline a captain spot but then say they want to play with someone else. I also dont think you can just not register and the captain spot wouldnt get filled. I think they would fill it in some way.

pro side was by invitation only we have 14 teams confirmed, so if you think you are eligible please contact myself or billy crump(nature boy). we have not been having a lot of success getting a hold of some of the players who are eligible. if we can't reach them soon we will just pass them to next person.

I'm just saying these details should've been announced in advanced. Just like Fred thinking he was in, he might have played Pro instead at the Clash. The AM side is more of a local dubs tourney (Triad too) then a US Championship but maybe next year.
Yeah, i got shafted big time by the person or persons in charge of running the Clash...from the insanely shabby payout for a "A" Tier "Supertour", to getting jacked of my spot in dubs...none of these rules were made up ahead of time, just making them up as you go?? whats up with that...??...just got the run around when asked why i lost my spot!!

not a big fan of the captains choice holes... almost all deuce holes under normal play and with captain's choice will only reinforce that... tough shot really will be tough on the holes picked though and best disc on the first 6 should have some separation between the teams with some shots where people go off into the woods or ob.
