I will have a limited quantity of preds, surges, and buzz with the Funkytown stamp. The club merchandise is available to members for $14/disc. Members also have these discounts:

This Saturday, July 26th from 5-6pm we will be having a regular club meeting with these objectives:
- Form Tax ID/Non-profit plan of action
- Member recruitment to various offices
- Confirmation of 2008 vision
I encourage all members to attend to take part in the recruitment process! Recruitment simply means signing your name to offices that you would be interested in helping the club with.

Bob Robertson's funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 28, 2008. The funeral will be a graveside service at Lauerl Land Funeral Home. It is located on Crowley Road in between Sycamore School Rd. and Alta Mesa.
All people that ever knew Bob are welcome to come. I am sure that Shawn would apprecaite seeing some familiar faces.

this should be alot of fun and a chance to play the new layout if you've never played it before as we plan on having enough baskets to put in the whole eighteen holes for two rounds of fun, singles/doubles, with your help of coarse

It's based on the popular ball golf phrase: "Drive for show, putt for dough." So he did a play on words replacing ball golf terms with disc golf terms.
In this case, "drive" was replaced by "throw" and "putt" was replaced by "flip". So it ends up in the article as "Throw for show, flip for dough."
I'd say it's funky! :D

All the praise should go to Dan. He emailed me out of the blue for the interview.
I agree about frisbee though. Disc is definitely better. :DFortunately, he used Frisbee only once in the article (with disc 7 times) and only in a analogous way to help readers get the general idea more quickly.

Greetings to all my funkiest of friends. I just want to take a moment to tell all of you that the ADGA Club Championships are on for Oct. 5th. As most of you know this is one big celebration of life and friends with lots of discs flying, food to eat, and cervesa to cool you down. Hoping to see all of you there. ;)
P.S. I've spoken to Teague and Brownlow about the need for our two clubs to somehow combine an effort here in Tarrant County. This is something we should approach in the near future since we have grown so much here. Take care and thanks.

I don't mean to imply that our two clubs need to combine and become one. We each have commitments to certain traditions that we can't expect the other club to be able to give 100% of their attention to. What can happen in the near future is that we try to combine any "surplus assetts" to a county wide effort to educate and expand in some way. A lot of your members are also our members. This shouldn't be too far fetched. Lee, here in Arl. we never see you much anymore. It's understandable. I can hardly ever manage to get free to get over your way either. Now that I seem to be getting healthier and the kids are gone, I can see a little more freedom coming, and I hope to be a member there too. In any case we need to become more of a team working for each other.

today at around 10:30am I recieved a call from a friend with the city of Weatherford, it seems he was following a work truck that was pulling a tractor with an auger, he is part of the work crew that started digging holes and planting the sleeves for the new baskets
the baskets and locks are in storage so once the anchors are set in a few days and the tee poles are set, the baskets will be locked into place
however, the new tee signs will take a few more weeks to appear on the poles and the map will be linked to the course directory about the same time, or you can find it on the city's websitethe tee boxes will be the last to get installed and NO, they will not be cement so you can complain to me directly if it'll make you feel any better
we have decided to go with a crushed limestone for one main reason, to leave as little impact on the landscape as possible
I made that decision in a meeting with the city and I don't regret it as this park is host to many forms of wildlife, deer, turkey, owls, hawks etc. and we as disc golfers should remember we are visitors to their home
one final note, if you choose to come play, please adhere to a few simple requests, yield the right of way to the parks neighbors as many of them walk dogs here, please throw away your trash in the proper recepticles as there are plenty of trash cans in the park and it already has been mentioned that disc golfers throw their garbage on the ground
in short, please be respectful of persons and animals that call this home, please leave no footprint

sweet! concrete tee pads suck anyways, they cost too much and have an impact on the environment that is not always necessary. a little maintainence is all that is needed to maintain earthin teepads. good luck Nascar, cya at teams?

UPDATE
I met four friends out at the park last night, two of which were city park employees which also happened to have in their possession ten new Mach III baskets
it took about three hours but I'm happy to report that Weatherford course is now a full eighteen holes with a new putting basket
the course map isn't completed yet but I will put a rough draft in the info tube, it should be GPS'd later this week and then a map will be located on the city's website and linked to the PDGA course directory
the tee signs will be a few weeks in completion so for now I will number the poles with the correct hole numbers only, no distances yet
there was only one minor mistake when the anchors were installed which caused hole 13 to be about thirty feet shorter than originally mapped as the short placement ended up being the long placement now with a new short placement at about 235 and a RH flick

Gateway West is nearing completion. We are looking to raise $400 to expedite and finish off the clearing effort so that the work team can focus on pin positions, signs, and trimming. The sooner we can raise the $400, the sooner we can have Gateway ready to go for the Hangover Classic! Get with any board member, Brandon, or Gilbert to help make this happen.
If you haven't heard yet, there are tee pads at Gateway West. The team played most of the front nine this morning with a portable and we even gathered a small crowd. It was an awesome experience! But there is still work to do. See you guys out there soon. :D

Every small amount counts. Even $5 can take us there if everybody chips in. We currently have $100 donated.
The clearing will be done with a bobcat. There is some work to do on hole 12 and some trails to finish off. Also, some of the hills on the front nine will be made flat. I will be getting some pictures up soon so that everyone can see how close it is to being ready for play.

Thanks a bunch to those who supported the fundraiser! We have raised $400 easily and it will be used towards bobcat work soon. Also, thanks to those we had to turn down! It's clear that people are excited to see this course in the ground.
It's been a while since I've given a status. We are hard at work on these primary areas:
Tax ID/Non-profit work
======================
This is harder than it looks folks, but we are determined to get this done. I'm proud of the work invested so far and I'm especially thankful for our Tax ID team. We wouldn't be where we are today if not for their hard work. Just a few more things to do, including a meeting with some experts, and we should be on our way. Half of the work is finding out what non-profit structure our club fits into and the other half is jumping the legal hurdles to get there. We have spent most of our precious little time working together on finding legal advisers and researching the details ourselves. We have a couple of advisers willing to help, and one of them for free. Our goal is to have the paperwork filed by the end of the year.
PS: If you happen to have some background as a CPA or legal adviser, please come join our Tax ID team!
Hangover classic

Although the details are still being ironed out, I can tell you this will be:
- One day
- One round
- Membership renewal
- Bagtag challenge
- On January 1st, 2009
The facilities team is working hard at Gateway under Brandon Melton's direction to get the course complete for this epic event. Heidi is the event organizer and she will be the one to contact for details. She is working with the rest of the board to coordinate fliers, fundraisers, player packages, prizes, and so on.
Membership structure updates

Misty has been hard at work building our new membership structure for 2009. Next year there will be some changes on pricing and benefits that we expect will be an improvement over last year. Be looking for information about that to be posted soon. For those that are wondering, January is membership-renewal month. That means you have one month to renew starting January 1st. New members can join between now and the first and receive 2009 membership.
Website updates

Most of you have probably seen the new PDGA website. Along with that new website they changed some things "under the hood." The funkytown website gathers its statistics and member information from the PDGA and SNDG websites. I've since updated our site as much as I can to use the new PDGA site. There are still some issues left to be worked out. But I believe we will be ready for the next ratings update. I'm also working with Stephanie on some site design considerations.
Gateway park
============
Is it actually true!? Yes folks, Brandon Melton and Gilbert Casas stepped up and are taking this project to its full potential. I'm really proud of these guys and everyone that has contributed their time and blood out there. There is still work to do though, please come out on Saturday mornings and help us finish the course for the Hangover Classic. If you haven't come out yet, please do. I promise you it is worth the experience.

if you have played the Weatherford course in the last month or two, you will notice the course has a slightly different look this morning, 12-08-08
we moved fourteen of the baskets to the alternate locations yesterday afternoon and will have to replace three anchors so we can move them in the near future, also have to modify one basket slightly to get it to set properly in the existing anchor
none of this will effect play as all eighteen holes will remain playable during the repairs

We moved holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15.
We left 2, 14, 16, 17, and 18 because we thought they played a little harder where they were.
I plan on leaving them where they are for at least three weeks, then we'll see after that.
Now, for some more good news, you won't have to worry about breaking your hand much longer, as it has been agreed apon, they will be cut to approx two feet with the exception of hole one. That is due to the fact that will be more than one sign on that pole, hole sign, rules sign, mando sign.
It shouldn't be more than a week or so, for now, realease further back on the teebox, you can throw six feet further than you are right now, I know you can, lol.
Oh, and one other thing, you aren't the only golfer who has two baskets and no ability to make a twelve foot putt. And mine are Mach III's with plenty of chains, doh!

There was a 4 way tie for the #1 tag at the Vet! Brandon, Dalton, Brice, and myself. Sure was happy to trade that #104 for #13. :eek:

Our club meeting on the 17th was a success and we brainstormed ideas for 2009. A club survey will be sent out soon to get everyone's feedback. We will tally it all up and post the results sometime next month.

Just wanted to say Thanks to Brownlow and Misty for getting my Funkytown Tag (#106!) to me, without even having to ask for it :). I wasn't able to finish the Hangover due to family obligations, but what I stayed for was a great tourney run by a stand-up club. Looking forward to the next Funky event I get to attend!

We'll be running our Gateway mini at 3pm starting this Sunday. Since we don't have baskets in yet we will need people to bring theirs. We'll play whatever we can with the baskets we get. For example, if we only have 3 we'll play 6 rounds from those 3. These minis will start to supply the course fund while we wait on the final baskets.

Should be a few more baskets this Sunday. I'm bringing two, and trying to get a few Weatherford golfers to bring baskets, maybe a couple more, and talked to Tom Langley, he's bringing two and if Pepper doesn't come, Tom's gonna run by and get his two as well.
That's almost half a course, come on flyers, let's set up the whole eighteen holes and play em all.

We played all 18 last week too, but by carrying portables around. If we have enough people I would be okay with playing all 18. But if there are only 10-20 people, I think playing a certain set of holes multiple times would be best. We'll decide on Sunday!

Great turnout for mini today. I will post scores tomorrow.
Also, I should have more details on the basket situation soon as well. I talked with Brandon today and it appears to be a chicken and egg situation where the city doesn't want to pay for the course until the baskets are in, but Brandon doesn't want to install the baskets if the city doesn't follow through on the matching grant as the baskets become city property once installed. One idea would be to petition the city to allow for the baskets to remain the property of Brandon's business until the city fulfills the grant.
I've made a public information request for the contracts from the city so that the club can understand the details as well as what we can do to work with the mountain bikers and equestrian trails not only on the west side but the east side as well. I hope to receive that information from the city soon.

I hope everyone is enjoying the course. As most have noticed there has been some unwanted growth throughout the course. Dan Regal and I have done some detail work on #1,2,14 and 15. Mowing, weedeating and pick up of debris in the fairways. If anyone has some time to do some detailing, feel free to do so. 30 minutes or so is all we have spent at a time and it really helps open everything up. If you would like to help and not sure where to start call me and I can make some suggestions. If we all do a little bit the course will be broke in in no time.

I think it was #9 where I looked up from the tee and laughed because there was there not only no basket, but there was nothing to indicate that there was a fairway. I looked backwards to make sure that I was facing the right direction.
Also, I liked the "restricted area - you could get arrested if you enter" sign by the hole where you threw from the circle drive toward the river. I have a hunch that that sign was there because it was evident while I was there Saturday afternoon that the circle drive was a homasexyal hangout (eight cars parked, all had one male occupant, except ones that were empty because the occupant was out talking to another occupant).
I am looking forward to coming back and playing the course when you can shoot a round by yourself and not be concerned about losing a disc that is in or just off of the fairway, or turning my back on the occupants on the circle drive.

Hole 9 is great...what do you need a fairway for on a 200' hole, just throw it thru the hole and land on the green. IMO it is the best course in DFW and has a ton of potential. What is the point of a course that you can birdie every hole? This course takes it in the right direction and I can't wait for the east side to go in. Don't be mad cause you took 50 shots to get thru the front nine :)

Funkytown's Gateway workdays are moving to Sundays at 10am. Participating in the workday will get you a $3 discount on the mini. We have an aggressive plan for 2009 to make Gateway tournament ready by the beginning of fall. Come out and play a part in helping this course reach its full potential!

After playing it a couple of time it is also my favorite in the metro! I think the potential for this course and what it brings to the area is awsome! I think a few fairway need a little work but overall look around you volunters left blood on that course to make what fairways you have out there! I birdied hole 9 just throwing a 2 finger over the branch. Hole 12 I took a 4 on instead of a 8 like I did at the hangover:) I can wait for the future of disc golf at Gateway Park! Also about the park homo's I played a round starting around 730- 8 saturday morning and there was not hardly anyone out =there! I also played about 7 holes with Willy and Skip on the back side..... coincidentily they parked in the circle and willy said skip used to be a balariana dont know what thats all about :DThanks for the good time Skip and Willy! Wich by the way was there second time in 3 days to have played the course! They also cast a vote for Saturday morning Sunrise Mini's :D

I played Gateway for the first time on Saturday and greatly enjoyed it. Does hole 7 have a mando into the tunnel? The backdoor option is a bit too easy compared to the tunnel route. Holes 12 and 14 are my favorites for a few reasons: very difficult route, extremely punishing once off the fairway, and pleasantly scenic. Nice job!

No, there is not a mando on hole 7. But, once the trees feel in, it won't be an easy route to get in. Right now it is a nice way to shave a stroke.

I would like to take the opportunity to propose Saturday mornings for the Gateway mini. Willy and I have played it a few times now and I really love how an errant shot or an unlucky kick can cost you a full stroke to play back to the fairway. Looking forward to more competition out there.

Here is the latest update as of 4-21-09.
I had a very productive meeting with the Parks Department yesterday.
Originally me intention was to ask for 4x8 foot teeboxes. The question was asked if we were going to do them right, what would I like to see done. I said I would be estatic if we could get 5x10 foot teeboxes installed as would most of the local disc golfers. I was also asked about the shape of them since the director had recently seen the new teeboxes at McKinney's course. I said that while the trapazoid boxes are nice, I thought if we went with five foot wide, we would be fine with rectangular boxes. I was also asked about six foot wide boxes to which my opinion is that would be a little overkill. So in the end, we settled on 5x10 foot teeboxes.
I know that I have spoken to a few people about donating their time and labor to work on this installation. At the present that looks like it will not be necessary as the city has also recommened using their contractor for liability reasons. I happen to agree with them from a professional standpoint. I know that we have disc golfers that are more than capable of doing the work, and doing it right. I also believe we can shorten the timeline of a finished installation.
What we really need is to raise funds for our portion of the project. So, even if you think you can't donate much, every little bit will indeed help. Even if it's not much, it will help. I have a target that was given to me in the meeting yesterday that is very attainable. I would like to be able to transfer the funds immediately when the bid comes back from the contactor.
I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support of the Weatherford Disc Golf Club. It is because of you guys that we are able to get projects like this done in a timely matter.
I would like to also mention a couple others things briefly. First, the course looks great. The city has noticed and is thankful to all disc golfers for keeping the trash picked up. Please keep it up. They mentioned they would keep it mowed and the trash cans emptied in a timely manner. We have also signed up for the "Keep Weatherford Beautiful" project and as a club will sponsor the park for a period of two years. I figured we were already picking up the trash anyway. The second thing is that an additional run of bag tags have been ordered and should be here by the end of the week. The money generated from these go directly into the course fund as well so if you don't already have a tag, this is a great way to help with the teeboxes.

I have verbal agreements from three different people, and with what I already have in the course fund, we're about 200.00 short. So, we should be able to transfer when the city is ready, which is proabably about a week or two away.
I'm hoping the teeboxes are finished before June1st.

Special Request: Please keep an eye out for two stolen baskets, they were stolen from the Weatherford DGC on Saturday, June 20th around 10pm.
The descriptions are as follows, both are DGA Mach III's. The first one is the practice basket with the DGA logo on the nuber plate and various stickers on the pole inside the chain assembly. The second is Hole 18's basket with the number 18 in bright red on the number plate.

Also, we are looking at an entry fee of 20.00 for now but may lower it before the event.
There will be a max of two CTP's paid per person so as to spread the wealth around.
However if you hit three or four, you will have your choice of prizes.

Entry is going to be $20.00, and the CTP stuff is still coming in.
Several prizes in excess of sixty dollar value, several autographed discs, several first run champion and star discs, a new golf bag, a George Foreman grill, shirts, towels, and much more swag. Everyone that wins will win more than their entry costs them and the cap is two CTP's per person so nine people are gonna win something.

Just Finished Playing the Z and the POS's struck agin. This time number 11 is gone. I didn't make the Mini yesterday but didn't read anything so it had to happen since then.
