From another post:
The following DFW (Texas) clubs were established prior to 1989:
Arlington Disc Golf Association (established 1988)
Irving Disc Golf Association (established late 70's or early 80's)
I believe Dallas Disc Golf (formerly named Dallas Disc Golf Association) has been active since the mid-1980s, too.
Prior to these three clubs was the North Texas Disc Golf Association, however, that particular organization disbanded around 1989.

The first three courses in DFW went in '79-83 with Skyline in Garland first, then Fritz, then Carrolton. Skyline was pulled about '92 and the baskets put in at BB Owens. For a while the guys at Irving would trip around to various parks in the Metroplx and set up temps for a day. One of the parks they really liked was Veterans Park, and in '88 Keith Enochs began a two year vigil to get the course made permanent by petitioning the City Council and attending meetings finally having success with the park opening in May of '90. As a result of all his hard work Keith was given a lifetime membership in the ADGA. I heard last year he's up in Iowa/Wisconsin doing alot of snow skiing.
Not too long after it went in some locals began running "minis" and doing what was very common back then and putting most of the profits into their pockets. A group of us, though, approached them and with their assisstance took over the operations dedicating all our efforts to making the VPO as big an event as we could and noone was making a dime. All the moneys generated went to buy stock and helped to make playing here ( along with the huge ace pots ) an exciting experience. As a result of our success the VPO was always in the top ten events every year and in the top five in several of those years listed right along side of the Worlds, KC Wide Open ( held on four courses ), the Memorial, Japan Open, etc.. One thing though.....we were always the highest paying event per entrant in a tournament held on one course. Think about that and all the hundreds of events each year we were beating. We set standards back then that have moved on to help with the growth of our purses and sport altogether. It is a legacy to be proud of and I hope we will one day regain alot of the respect we held back then.
I've made hundreds of very good friends in this club over the last 18 years. It is a priveledge I cherish.

Skip, I sincerely believe we are well on our way back to making the VPO an event that lots of pros will travel to attend.
I know I'm not the TD for the VPO (this year at least) but I think we should set a goal right now of gathering enough sponsorship money to pay out first place open at least $1000, if not far more.
The money we can make off plastic from the Fling will go a long way toward achieving that.

I tend to feel the same way, GB. You will make a good TD and I like the approach and the format you're adopting this year. Let me know if you need any help. ;)

Count on the support of the FFC to make that real... Really
glad to see things doing so well for the ADGA.

The mind is a beautiful thing to waste. You can pretty much ask me any tee -> pin and i know the distance.
For future reference though, Pat Brenner has a neat resource on his earthoffice website.
