A tier this year? whats the deal with that?

Scheduling and control, I think. When you go with the NT process, you lose control over a lot of the details, including scheduling.

That is what A3 wanted to do with the tournament for the reasons that Bruce mentioned as well as some others.

Any idea on the format of the event, and courses that will be used? I see it will be two days. I'd like to see one round at Monster, Original, and Tobbogan.

Monster, Original, Campground (Green course) Green course is located accross the street at the boyscout camp. The course was used for PAW 2000.

Reduction of entry fees and opening tournament to all divisions are some of the reasons.

Does that mean that Michigan no longer has a NT event? That kinda sucks, I think there is some prestige to that.

That is what it means.
There are more A-Tiers this year though. Not just including the DGLO...
CCR Open is as well.

Was no real reason to have it be an NT anymore since it was not a qualifyer for USDGC and the attendance in past years has not been so great........And I suspect this year even less due to the fact that there is a NT in Cali the same weekend but who knows there may be more people with the lower entry fee. Either way I will be there supporting my sponsor!!! HollA

Green Course instead of Toboggan? ****. :( I expected Toboggan since Am Nationals is only a week before, I figured they'd keep it in for an extra week for DGLO, the reverse of last year.

Traditionally the tournament ends and the baskets come out right? Does DGLO staff really want to tear the course down and transport the baskets to Discraft?

What is the Green course?

Traditionally (last couple of years), the park lets me keep the baskets in for at least a week afterwards. The A3 club (who runs the DGLO) made the decision to use the different courses.
At least that's what my limited knowledge leads me to believe. (Standard disclaimers apply)

Lots of birdies on the Green Course :)
c'mon guyz:
a lot has changed in disc golf since 2000. that green course could be a lot better as a par 65+ 18 hole course.
seriously, back to back wide-open 500 ft. holes? then several silly-easy snoozers? mickey mouse!
for the love of the game puh-leaze do something better with that property.

No final decision has been made to courses or divisions. I was told the Toboggan course would not be available for the DGLO, so we are looking into using Rolling Hills or the Campground (green) course.
The initial plan is for Pro's to play Champ Black, Blue, Champ Black. The Am's would use the third course.
Here is the course map for the Campground Course (green) we used for Pro/Am Worlds in 2000.

I was at one of the A3 board meetings and I tried to voice my concern on losing the NT status for DGLO. I understand why the decision was made but with the PDGA limiting the number of NT events to start making a more prestigious national tour I think it will be really hard for DGLO or any other michigan tournament to gain the NT status again.
And michigan being one of the premier disc golf states I think its sad that other than this years worlds we don't really have a tournament that would bring in those top pros.
As far as the toboggan, personally I love to play the toboggan but for a tournament that is somewhat local for me it sucked that I had to drive almost 2 hours last year to get to Kensington. I would love to see the green course added because it makes everything right there in the same vicinity. And I wasn't playing disc golf the last time that course was in so I'd like to play it.
Just my 2 cents.

It also looks like DGLO will be a two day this year instead of three day.
I think we will see a larger pro turnout this year with lower entry fees and just a Saturday-Sunday commitment.

I think its ok that DGLO is not a NT anymore.......The past few years attendance in the Open division had been the lowest of all the NTs which is not a good things since NT status only matters if you play in the Open division. Another things is we will have 2 great Super Tours (A Tiers) in the DGLO and CCR Open.......DGLO is also no longer a USDGC qualifying event which also eliminates the need for it to be a NT.........I think that you are right we will have a higher local pro (Indiana Illinois Ohio Kentucky) turnout with the lower entry fee and only 2 day commitment. Also alot of the pros have been turned off by the Monster Course being played during the event.....I have talked to many many top Open players that say as long as the Monster course (especially the Champ Blacks) is played more than once they will not be back. I dont know what it is they just dont like the course. I assume its because of the Champion pins. But I think the Best layout if it was possible would be Toboggan Blues Toboggan. That might attract some of the pros who used to frequent the DGLO to come back and play it again. I guess only time will tell how things changes goes but truely I think its for the better since it will most likely boost the attendance and the fees for running an A Tier should be lower than those for running a NT.
Either way ill see you guys at DGLO no matter what courses we play.
THROW DISCRAFT!!!

Don't be thinkin that everyone thinks the monster shouldn't be played.
It's a great course and should be played.
I want the whole tourney at hudson mills and don't want to travel to two places in the weekend.
Bring back the final nine.

I'm with Mike in support of a return to the final nine format.
I find no atmosphere at events with tee times. No gathering together of the players, no between-rounds rehash over lunch, no calm under the tent when the horn sounds and play begins.
Also, extracurriculars are harder to plan using tee-times. No jumbo toss, etc.
Hopefully the Campground can be tweaked a bit to make it more entertaining. There could be some artificial OB, perhaps.
Someone liberated the Championship basket on E if I heard right. Maybe that one at least shouldn't be replanted.

I think that this is worth while information while considering the planning of this event, authored by Jay Reading:
DGLO was a nicely run and organized event this year, thanks Pad! One thing in particular this event did better than most was have a ton of volunteer spotters, wow, thanks to you all! The courses were also very well groomed (just wish the Toboggon had tee signs with distances on Thursday's practice day).
We have made it to every DGLO since we started playing and came here for Worlds in 2000 . In light of this year's event and after talking with other players I would like to recall the things that we used to love about the DGLO. It is easy to armchair TD and I am not quite sure of the A3 and Discraft split of duties as that seems to change year to year, but alas, this event has had stronger years and has seen decline in status as one of the best NT's. No offense intended, just feedback :p
THINGS WE USED TO LOVE ABOUT D-GLO:
--Jumbo Toss
--Players Party / Fly Mart under the big top Saturday evening
--Beer Sponsor
--Players lunches on site (Just Am's the last two years)
--Players Packages for all (Usually some unique D-Craft disc)
--Final Nine Skins Match (Mark Ellis on megaphone, classic)
--Ams and Pros being together for some portion of the tournament
--Over the Top Added Cash
--Large gallery of spectators for the last day

for a two day event i think it would be almost impossible to do the format as tobogan blue tobogan, it makes for one of the days to be unessicarliy long.
i dont think i have heard many of the top players ever complain about the black. and, just cuz in the chance one person doesnt like a course (probably because they didn't shoot as well as they know they could have), i cant see that being a viable reason to take it outta the agenda. I think there are far more people that love the course, rather then not like it.
DGLO used to be a spectacular event. there were certain components that Jay mentions that have no longer been a part of it for the last couple of years which take away the fun part of it. in my opinion, i think "funness" is an important part to the sport we all love.
to add on to what Jay says, i also miss everyone being in the same place. the "community" is one more thing that gives alot of enjoyment to the sport. by splitting everyone up, that is taken away.
even with all the changes, I do think it has still been a spectacular event, Discraft and those who run it do an amazing job, and there is alot of love, heart, and soul that go into this event. I just think its ashame to take away NT part of it. But without it being an NT, maybe we can regain some of that long lost old fashioned good time funness.

Am I in the minority amongst players that loves watching a Pro Final 9? I've heard so many say they feel like they're being "held hostage."
I've only been at a few events myself that actually had one (Kingston Open, Hambrick Memorial Open) and every time I've had the opportunity I've watched and thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't been around long enough to see one at DGLO, and I've got to say I would love to see it!

Woj,
you are not the only one who loves to watch a final 9. but, i sit here and post and reminece(sp?) on the old days of DGLO that included a glorious final 9 with a sweet layout with quite the gallery. oh, and sometimes a golf cart loaded with fresh watermelon for the spectators and players. At tobogan, yes there is a final round, but, after playing all day (or not for that matter) how fun is it to walk up and down 500 foot holes in the skorching heat to watch it? IMO, not that much. Of players, the last thing they want to do is that walk AGAIN after playing a 4 hour or so round. This past year, i didnt play, i spotted (due to previous planned engagements), and I didnt even want to do that walk to watch. Though there is technicality to the tobogan, but when you have a gallery it turns into a power/drive contest. I mean, i love watching the guys who can throw 500+ ft, but, i would rather sit at the top of the 18th hole and wait for the players to come in- like most people did this past year.
also, as said above, with the pros and ams being split, this took away from the gallery. for the ams who came to MI and had a drive ahead of them after the end of the tournament, i doubt many of them deicded to drive a half hour north to watch the final round. Yet, when everyone is together, the ams are more likely to stick around to route on their favorite players, or to catch an autograph of their most cherished disc golf celebrity.
there are alot more people then you think who do in fact love to watch a final 9. they are a blast to watch. maybe this year for DGLO, the old layout will be brought back to life.
since you havent seen many, heres my reccomendation- quit your job, go hit all the big events and you will see some awsome finals!

Im sorry if you guys thought I said ALL pros dont like it I just mentioned many of the pros I have talked to say they will not play if the CHAMP Blacks is player. They were saying that in prior years the course was not as well groomed at the last course and some russian olives were in places they thought they just shouldnt be. I love the straight up Blacks and so do most of those pros I talked to. Maybe a Blacks Blues Blacks format would be better. These are just things I have heard and am passing on. I love the event I love the things Discarft does for the event and I love all the staff for what they do......Its an amazing event I just think it wont hurt to not be an NT anymore and it may even help the turnout a little moving to 2 days and having a lower entry fee.
I myself would also love to see them bring back the final 9 but for skins only not for score in the tournament.

You're completely right. If the Pros have to finish out on Toboggan (which, of course, means the Ams won't be on site) then I don't much care if there is a final 9 or not because, being from South of the tournament location and with gas prices what they are I wouldn't be finishing my round, going through awards, and then heading north just to watch a Final 9 that might be over by the time I got there.
And as for your last point... I'm way ahead of you on that one. ;) Hopefully the Memorial will be the first in that plan, if I can find one more we've got a full crew to drive all the way down playing courses all the way.
