View Full Version : The Ice Bowl '08 Veteran's Park

Wouldn't some doubles be fun? Let's get the Ice Bowl going again. How about Feb. 19th or maybe the 26th? I don't see anything on the tour thread that this would interfere with, but I don't see anything about the Big Show on there either so I'm not sure what's happening locally on those two weekends.
In the past we played two rounds with the first being best shot and the second a modifided alternate where both players throw tee shots and get to pick the one they want to play and alternate it in from there. The person not throwing the tee shot throws the second shot then the other guy and so on and so on till we make our five . Also in the past we would all bring some chili or some such for a quick lunch at the park.
The ADGA won two of the first three years of competition nationwide for their charitable contributions. This would be too much to try to have as a goal this year but we could still make a difference in someone's lives that need it. Claydog has an unique idea that I think would be a good cause. I'll let him explain it when he has done a little more checking on it.
How about it boys and girls. Let's play some doubles. :)

From the typing fingers of Mace:

"The Big Show

The Big Show at Cedar Hill will open the week again this year. Are you ready for this.....it will be the week after the Stupid Bowl. Feb 9-10 A 72 hole PDGA B-tier event.

Hockey Game on Monday night Feb 11. More details later.

Mid-Week Wednesday Feb 13 Course TBA

Z Boaz Open Feb 16-17. This will be a PDGA A Tier. I am working on formats that will include the course on the North Side of the tracks. However this is where this plan will succeed or fail, it will require everyone to be signed up on Friday or before. It will also require us to get under way at 8 am (not have a meeting at 8 am, start at 8am). Before you scream at both of these prospects it will allow all Open and Advanced players to play 2 rounds of the Original Z Boaz. Unfortunately it will also require all Rec and Intermediate players to play 2 rounds on the temp. This plan will also allow for the number of players that played this year with no ghost cards, but it will take a commitment from YOU as well.

The Z Boaz Format Skins Match will follow on Sunday Afternoon."

Here ya go Skip.

I must have looked at the calender wrong. If the 17th is a Sunday then I think we need to look at the 24th for the Ice Bowl.

BTW....David, is that pic of John Wayne Gacy from your family annaloge or just one he gave you after a special time?

as a spokes person for the fair weather golfer contingent, count us in provided you can dial up temp's in the 70's. God forbid we actually play an ice bowl in winter-like conditions.

If we do the "Ice Bowl", then it needs to be on Saturday March 1st barring any problems with scheduling of other groups (i.e. cross country meet, ham radios convention, garden club, etc...) Since we are taking a little different approach, I don't think it HAS to be in the Ice Bowl time frame. I would actually like to do a few charity events during the summer. I would like to use the money collected at each event to adopt a local family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Stock up the pantry, get gifts and clothes, maybe even take care of a few repair jobs around the house. This way we can actually see the fruits of our hard work building money throughout the year, as oppossed to handing a check to a faceless conglomerate. Instead of one person with the club writing a check, all ADGA members that want to be involved can be there to make a difference we can see. We can invite Martin and Oscar from the city to join us so the powers that be, know we are doing something for the communty that is more than just picking up trash at the park. What do you guys think? These events don't even have to be 100% charity. Maybe we can do some kind of small payout in plastic. That way we move our plastic, the players get a little something to take home, and the family we adopt also wins. Long live The Arlington Disc Golf Association.

One other thing, I'm sure Chuckles has a few discs he can donate to the cause after winning THE BIG SHOW TRIFECTA.

One other thing that we can do is join the city of ft. worth in their annual CowTown paint off. That is where as a club we go paint some needy person house. The city and other companies donate all the material..we just need to show up and paint it.

TransAmerica Ins. (where I work) did it this past year and we were able to paint 6 houses. Each house requires a team of about 10-15 persons. It took us about 1/2 day to paint the house that we were assigned.

Since you mentioned the people from the city..... I was there this last weekend with my daughter and noticed that the playground has several areas that could use some attention before a little one gets hurt! I also wanted to talk to them about getting some water fountains installed around the park, I run frequently around the park and there is not one fountain around the main running trail and this is Texas with it mild summers and all! Can you give me a contact at the park to discuss this with!

Oh and I am down with helping anyone in need any way I can just let me know!

Feb 19 2008, 06:07 PM
All good suggestions. Willy, could you get me some info?
Eric, I have spoken at length with our contact about water fountains. The problem with installing anything like that is vandalism by the local teens. I tried to tell them the problem isn't the park, it's the local teens with nothing to do at night, especially during the summer months. I put that completely on the city and the APD. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out where the problem is. It's much easier for the city to blame the disc golfers, just like what happened after the Fling this year, (yes, we got blamed for vandalism in the south pavillion closet). I have also been trying to get the city to plant a tree in between 12 and 14s tee pads. I even worked out a deal to get it watered on a daily basis. The roadblock I hit was with the lady at the city who is charge of the program. She won't return my calls or emails, which I find to be very, let's just say LAZY, for someone in that position. I will get Martin to put some pressure on and see what we can do.

Feb 19 2008, 06:26 PM
Just shot an email to Martin about everything we discussed here.

discgolfdog
Feb 19 2008, 06:46 PM
Including the playground. I volunteered our services and time if the city provides the materials. Anything we do in the park counts as "time served". This means if we put in enough hours, we will get 50% off pavillion rentals when we have an event. This can add up over the course of a year. For example, this years VPO the pav. rental and beer permit for two days was upwards of $300. That's $150 more that could have gone to added cash.

Tell me about it my little girl is talking up a storm but it sounds like “gibidy gobidy kit cat baby” maybe that will act as kryptonite and confuse them and they will just sit and stair in amazement :DI am down to play a stroller round any time! Thanks by the way Clay for emailing the city about all that stuff I would be glad to help with any improvements to that park! I am getting really tired of the parks constant shuning of disc golfers and catering to others is that not discrimination?

Eric, could you PM me with any concerns you have with the playground. Martin got back with me and we need to know specifics. They have a budget for that area. If it's small stuff, we can do it, anything else contractors need to do. Martin said they would provide anything we need. That playground is scheduled to be moved this year, so they don't want to go all out on it, but they do want everything to be safe for the kiddos, so let me know.
Got a new contact for trees. I'll be meeting with them when I can get over there. They want to look at planting new trees throughout the park, not just on the course. Also they want to go through and mark dead trees on the course for tearing out. I'm only concerned with those that pose a safety concern for our golfers. I got the standard answer on water, although there is money and plans to do work on the existing plumbing, and possibly more.

I know I started this idea and let it go without any follow up. I've been pretty ill as most of you know and I'm sorry, but I just wasn't up to the task this time. I would, however, really enjoy seeing us do something. I had Rick Rothstien E-mail me with kudos for reviving the event and I hated it that I was not up to it. Maybe next year we can get involved with the national event again, but in the mean time we could still have some fun.

Everybody remember to set your clocks forward! Tomorrow is the first of hopefully 3-4 charity events this year. Skip and hopefully Greg will start taking signups around 9ish. $15 per person to play two rounds of doubles and shoot at whatever comes in that day for the ace pot. $5 of each person's entry goes to the ace pot. That money will be given away tomorrow. I have a number of gift cards,2- wine/cheese baskets, discs,t-shirts to give away on ctps, so come help a great cause by having fun. AND..SET YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD! clay :D

Thank you to everybody that showed up and played. I'm always amazed how disc golfers in the metroplex will show up for a somewhat no payout charity event. The turnout far exceeded what I was expecting. As Pat said we raised $490 today. John said he would donate a disc to make it $500. If we do this 3 or 4 times we will have 1,500-2,000 to help out a local family in need come Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Thank you so much for getting behind the ADGA on this project. Thank you for your time, your donations, and your patience. Skip came out and ran the whole thing even though he wasn't feeling well. I can't say enough good things about Skip, so all I will say is thank you, you are absolutely awesome. :DClay

Thanks goes out to all who participated in the spirit that was intended. We're hoping to get the attention of the city and locals with this donation to help with future developements at the Vet and hopefully a new park soon. As you all know Mickey has made quite a bit of headway towards that cause and I'm thinking we all have reason to anticipate good things.
Claydog all things are made possible by your efforts these past two years. I could not contribute what I do without your taking on the responsibilities that you have. Much thanks to you, Dog. :)
