What's the best way to spend the day after Thanksgiving? No, not at the mall: On the course, throwing ace runs for dollars!

Since Brown Park (aka Mary Beth Doyle Park) is still out of the ground, a3disc will once again hold The Original Ace Race at Hudson Mills.<ul> Day after Thanksgiving, November 23
Registration opens at 8:30 am; players' meeting at 10
Fee is $20, of which $5 goes to the club and $15 is in the ace pot
Two rounds of 18 holes
Aces share the ace pot
Metal hits ("dots") get prizes
Additional optional ace pool of $10[/list]It would not be surprising to have 120 players for this event. At $15 in the ace pot for each, that is $1,800 to be split among the aces. If 60 of those players also get into the optional $10 ace pool, that's another $600.

So a single ace by someone who was also in the optional pool could potentially be worth $2,400.

Don't go to the mall.

Yeah, we are so lucky that we established 20+ years ago that Sheila's family comes to our house on Thanksgiving!

see you all there should be great fun.

Nov 08 2007, 09:19 PM
Is this going to be a discraft sponsored ace race including their new ace race disc for 2007.

bruce_brakel
Nov 09 2007, 09:39 AM
No. It's a throw-your-own-plastic ace race.

shortened holes (i assume) 1 drive per hole and on to the next.

You will be using whatever discs you want to. not the Discraft ACE RACE Discs.
They will be shortened holes all of them
1 throw per hole that is it.

Hey, I *am* gonna be using that Discraft Ace Race disc! I finally got one and I like it. Don't know what it is called, but it is in fact a lot like a Z-Storm but faster and longer.

Anyone know when the shorter tees will be marked? or if the field will be capped?

cyferban
Nov 13 2007, 11:43 AM
Terry is running the event i imagine there won't be a cap. as we can fit a whole lot of people at HM. I assume Terry is going to do what he did last year and that is to have the players who start on a hole set the tee's like he did last year.

To Ken. There's no limit on group size. Throwing only one shot, a ten-some moves along nicely. The more the merrier.

Otherwise...Please discourage a repeat of last year's ill-conceived "mark your own" tee idea. The goal of the Ace Race is to give folks a shot at most if not all holes. That didn't happen last year. The spots Terry has previously marked for tees would have been fine but were abandoned following a late-hour unilateral "idea."

I conceived of and started the Ace Race, so I should know: what happened last year was barely an Ace Race.

NO limit is great! I have only played the ace race when it was at brown so i did not play the "mark your own tee" format. but it sounds questionable. I'd rather see preset tees with def ace runs. With a large feild and lots of money to be won why not make it alittle easier..... or maybe a set bounty for a few longer holes?

I forgot about the 'mark your own tee' thing. Yea that was a little wierd. I would like to see one tee for each hole.

The field will not be capped.

Even though I personally loved the "mark your own" concept, I plan to mark the short tees on Thanksgiving. If I cannot get out that day, then I will mark them early Thursday.

I plan to make them reachable by nearly everyone

I wish I could find some acceptable way to make this inclusive for the women players who just can't throw that far*, even though they may be experienced, precision throwers.

* No, I don't mean the Pros who *can* throw 250 or more, but folks like my wife and a lot of the other women who can't. She has no interest in an Ace Race where she can only reach 2-3 out of 18 holes.

One solution would be to make every hole under 200' (or not much over) - which is, I am guessing, why the Discraft One-Disc Ace Race sets its tee lengths so short.

I just might do that.

P.S. Joe, I am not sure what you meant by "barely an Ace Race," since I clearly remember at Brown Park there were always a number of holes that I had trouble reaching at a height where I could conceivably get an ace? I don't recall the holes last year being substantially any further away than those, overall, (although I had hoped people would set them shorter) and we certainly had a lot of aces?

Shouldn't be a problem this year, though.

Here is another tid bit for anybody who is thinking of playing the ACE RACE that day is a free entry into the park day. so you won't have to pay to get into the park.

how long does this event normally take? I have to work that night but would love to make it if I can. need to be to work by 6:00 p.m in Sterling Heights so I need to be out of there by 4:30 to get home and change first.

Sheila and I just went around the Original Course and marked the Ace Race tee areas - they are all quite reachable by anyone who doesn't struggle to get a 200' drive off. In some cases the tee areas are not on the fairway, so be looking for pairs of orange wire flags. (On Hole 13, you will be throwing from the middle of the Black Pond.)

We will play two rounds in a row, without anything other than a brief bathroom break when your card gets to Hole 1. In past years, at Brown Park, there sometimes was enough time for a group to *try* to get a doubles round in after the Ace Race. (Usually didn't finish in daylight.) So, while I can't guarantee it, we will probably finish play well before 4:30.

Despite what it says above and on the website, we have decided to do two rounds of 24, not 18. That is more holes, but smaller groups playing each hole faster. Should balance out timewise and result in more Aces.

How long awarding of prizes, etc., will take depends on variables I don't know ahead of time. I am not playing, so I should be able to get the money all counted out and everything fairly prepared ahead of time.

Registration will be inside the park office.

Tell your friends to come, the more there are, the bigger the pot!

Yippie! As the TD, who will have to stand and sit around counting money and keeping records while the rest of you throw discs at baskets, I am thrilled that we'll be setting up for registration, merch, and payouts *inside* the park office building.

Speaking of merch, note that we have some very nice Mystic Mills clothing still available. Bring some extra bucks, unless, of course, you are going to hit an Ace :)

Sorry I had to miss this one. I think the first ever.

Congrats to those recording aces. Luna with a pair. Guy is hot, particularly when money is on the line. Bennett. He's always getting his share. Richard Tuttle, way to bring one back for the geezers!

Hats off to the crew for putting this one on.
