Potential NEW DISC GOLF Course in Pittsfield Twp

Folks,

Pittsfield Township is turning the old Hickory Woods Golf Course into a
park. There is a meeting (workshop) to discuss the ideas for what to
have in the park on 6 Nov at 7pm (Platt and Michigan Ave Bldg). As
someone mentioned before, this is a great place for a disc golf course
(especially since I can walk there). I will be going. Is anyone else
interested in attending?

For those of you who don't know where the old Hickory Hills Ball Golf course was located it was on Crane road in ypsilanti.
From Ypsilanti follow Michigan Ave West, a mile or so before you come to carpenter rd on the left is Crane Rd turn left onto crane and approx a 1/2 mile down on the left is the old ball golf course. They have a large parking lot, pavillion and a barn. If the barn is somehow used that is where the bathrooms were located.
This new property / park will be a great disc golf course. mostly open but there are some trees on the course and a small pond. they also have a small downhill slope at the back of the property.
Come to the meeting if you can to support the potential of a new disc golf course. we really need to get Pittsfield Twp residents in attendance mostly but we will take all the disc golfers we can get. hope to see some of you there.

Please do some, and note that with the township staff, we are dealing with pre-educated folks. The know about disc golf and at some point definitely want a course in one of their parks.

I think this abandoned golf course is perfect for putting one in inexpensively. I have only seen aerials, but it must already have some parking *and* when you put a course in on an abandoned golf course, you don't have *any* clearing to do!

One of the worlds courses in Milwaukee was like this. I plan to bring some photographs of that to show around. If they let us have enough space, this could be a top-notch competitive course, too.

There was a good turnout last night for the Pittsfield parks workshop. There were six disc golfers that I knew and spoke with, and at least one other who I did not see or get to talk to. The format was eight tables of citizens brainstorming on park uses and then prioritizing. Four of the eight tables had disc golf mentioned, three mentioned as integrated with walking and biking trails and one as a sport.

Three of the disc golfers live in the immediate area of the park and we'll need to rely on them to push for disc golf in there. The township officials noted that they would do the "cheap" stuff first, which includes walking trails, and the disc golf needs to be integrated with that or it might be precluded by the trails layout.

To whom it may concern:

I live in Pittsfield Township in the Ashford Village sub division. This may have already been considered, but I would like to see a disc golf course integrated to fit in and around the walking trails in the former Hickory Woods Golf Course, which is now a township park. I think this would be an economical and environmentally safe way to get some recreational purpose out of the park. This would also promote a growing sport, especially in Washtenaw county.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will add it to all the resident ideas, suggestions and comments regarding the site. At the Hickory Woods vision workshop we had on Tuesday, many positive comments were made about providing a disc course.

Any news on this project?

I have heard nothing but it will take time and they still have to plan it and fund it and implement it. This of course assumes that they feel a disc golf course is correct for this new park.
When i was at the meeting i spoke with the park superintendant and he felt that if a course doesn't go into this park they have plans for a course or courses in the pittsfield preserve. me personally i would rather see a higher caliber course in the preserve then a course squeezed in hickory hills or hey both if they can afford it. I don't know if anything will happen in 2008 but it is possible.

There was a letter sent out to residents of pittsfield twp about the park.

They are planning on having another workshop to determine what to do with the land. June 3rd from 7 till 9 at the pittsfield township administration building.

Sounds to me reading the letter that they have hired a firm to handle the park planning process. Clearing of buckthorn around the perimeter has also began.

I will not be able to attend the workshop but if a few of you show up we need to continue to let the township know that we want a disc golf course installed.

That is the night of the next A3 board meeting so none of us will be able to attend can we find some interested disc golfers preferably from pittsfield twp to attend???
