6 hardy workers came out in the steady rain and cleared the approach to #14 basket today. Thanks to Dave Khurt, Alex Fore, Jerry Gotcher, KB Clark, Marcus Ranii-Dropcho and J. Gary Dropcho for their outstanding effort at hauling away the pieces of the big tree that was cut up, for removing the briars and vines, and raising the ceiling on the approach shot. Excellent effort all!

If the rain kept you away, you still have time to volunteer your muscle as we ready the course for The Hunt September 29. Every Thursday evening in September from 5-8 pm we will "clip and flip" -- play some golf and prep the course. Bring work gloves and whatever tools you have.

Meet in the upper parking lot by hole 17.

Come on out to Deer Lakes Park this Thursday evening from 5-8. We'll be working on the par-5 hole 14....cutting trees, removing briars & saplings, etc. Wait until you see how much clearing has been done already... :)

How did the work day go?
Did you guys get that giant puddle filled in on hole 15? I'm sick of losing discs in it!!! :D

Six more yeoman came out last night to put the "shoulder to the wood." We made some major improvements to holes 13, 14 and 16, both dragging off the addititional trees the county workers cut down, wrapping and pinning hanging vines to big trees, and using the rope saw to raise the ceiling.

Thanks to Alex "Iron Man" Fore!, Josh "The Beast" Arnette, Josh "Call me Charlie" Charlton, Greg "Meitus Touch", Jerry Gotcha and J. Gary Dropzone.

Plan on coming out to Deer Lakes Thursday Aug 30 and every Thursday in September as we ready the course for The Hunt.

J. Gary and myself, and the mysteriously hidden KB, plugged away this evening making some more improvements to the Deer Lakes course in anticipation of The Hunt. Hole 6 saw low brush and debris removal on both sides of the fairway opening alleys for approach shots. Some pruning occurred on 8 and 9 as well. The ever thinking J. Gary also transplanted a small dogwood for future "doh" moments.

Please come out and help next week (9/13) around 5:00PM. If organized there is work that can make the course look that much better for its tourney debut. :D

Volunteer work day at Deer Lakes Park
Thursday, September 13
5:00 pm

We could use as many volunteers as possible for a productive work day at Deer Lakes this Thursday night. The tournament is quickly approaching and we want to impress the out of towners with our newest Pittsburgh course.

Please consider spending 2 or 3 hours working at Deer Lakes this Thursday night. Quite honestly, we're a bit tired of seeing the same 5 or 6 faces showing up weekly to do all the work. Thanks in advance for your consideration. :D

The Hunt is less than two weeks away and much work needs to be done at Deer Lakes.

Members of the Deer Lakes Disc Golf Club will be out this Wednesday and Thursday this week working on tees for holes 6, 13, 14 and 15.

Can you give a few hours? We'll meet in upper parking lot on Wednesday and Blue Gill parking lot on Thursday. Come as early as you can 4-8 pm

I did go out last Saturday to check out the course again and see what's up. I noticed a vast improvement on certain holes.

If you are into baby back ribs at all, I recomend the Mish Market on the way in on the Orange Belt. Those ribs are the dank.

It's kind of a haul for me to get there, hence only being there twice now. Sorry guys, I would hit up that work day if I could be there and back in an hour or less... but that sucker is a long shot for me.

Sorry... a 2 hour drive down, arrive at 7PM, dark at 8:30, 2 hour drive back, $40 in gas on a weekday isn't possible for me. Seems the only time that is good for me is a weekend. I was down on Labor Day weekend and the following weekend doing a little cleanup, but everybody else was out of town those weekends. Sorry guys, wish I lived closer or we had a course in Erie that I could donate tons of time to :( I don't think there is anybody in Erie though to make that a possibility. Kan-Jam is the game up here that everybody's into. www.kanjam.com (http://www.kanjam.com)

Well that would be plain silly. Almost as silly as how it takes me 15 minutes to get from Greenfield to the highland park bridge at 4:30. It gets dark at 8 pm now anyways :) Jerry is just trying to get the local yokels out and up in it. I'm all over it

I'm sure glad you are all over it Alex. With you as a regular we are up to an average of, what, four a week? JGD, JG, AF, and myself. Also the VERY occasional straggler (Thanks this week goes out to Tom Moeller and the other few know who they are). I for one am "alkfgfggjodja=d" of it. YOU PLAY THE COURSE, PLEASE COME HELP!!! Give up your thirst for throws and shoot for some work that really shows. Be a part of your course, not just a player.

Five seems to be the magic number....four regulars plus a straggler (or two) each week. It is amazing what those small number of volunteers have done week after week, however. Last night's focus was on holes 5 and 6. Ground cover was removed throughout the entire hole of hole 5, including some low hanging branches on the left side of the fairway. This downhill, par 3 hole looks fantastic!

As for hole 6, low limbs and ground debris was removed and a level blue tee is nearing completion. "Stella" promises this tee will be ready come tourney time next week.
LaGrassa....next time you see this place, you're jaw will drop a couple of times when you see the amount of work that has been done by a handful of workers each week. Stan McDaniel would be proud...

I didnt mean to sound so negative in my post last night. The course is in GREAT shape and the work is coming along well. It is just frustrating seeing the same handful of faces week after week. Maybe that whole kharma thing that I believe so deeply in will be on my side next weekend! CANT WAIT FOR THE HUNT!!!!!

I also am anxiously awaiting the next LaGrassa Open...

Quite honestly, I think it is pathetic we consistently see weak attendance for our Thursday evening work days. I know that some folks are too far away, there's limited daylight this time of year, evenings are more difficult than weekends, blah-blah-blah...

But I also know, for a fact, some local players simply do not feel like devoting some sweat equity to better the course. These particular individuals obviously choose to avoid lending a hand when it is needed, yet they will show up to play come tournament time.

Just yesterday afternoon, a group of four players were on the course....guys regularly seen at the local Knob Hill and Moraine minis. They saw me weed-whacking ground cover on hole 5 (with a hand tool, by the way), stopped to visit and talk about the upcoming Hunt at Deer Lakes....and then continued on to finish their round. They weren't there to help the club work on the course, they were there to play, man! As we finished our brief conversation and they walked on toward the green, I did ask them if they could help us out by tossing some branches and debris aside as they played the course. Something's better than nothing, I suppose... :(

There. How's that for a negative sounding post?

That does suck. I haven't had a free Thursday to be out there, and if I were playing and caught you guys out there, I would feel too guilty to keep playing.

Sorry for the earlier rant....I was (am) simply disappointed. Hopefully, we'll have great attendance for the tournament!

Instead of celebrating I spent my wonderous morning doing manual labor. With the help of Mike (County Parks Dept.) and his 6x4 gator, #6 Blue tee is done. #13 white tee is also backfilled and leveled.. I also viewed the full color sign that will adorn the park bulletin board, yeah, its pretty sweet.

4 days and counting. PLEASE COME HELP THURSDAY IF YOU CAN! Any and all effort is appreciated. :D
