This Sept. 30th the Arlington Club Championships will take place again with plenty of golf, food, and beer to make for a memorable Sunday. Sign ups will start at 7:30 and end at 9:00 with the first round to follow soon thereafter. Then a free hot dog, chips, watermelon, etc lunch with a quick turnaround for the second round. At the conclusion of the regular golf we will tap a keg ( you may bring your own also ) and shoot some ace in the oaks.
Entry fees are:
$10 renewal for a year
$10 to play for a title
$5 ace pot ( currently at $750 ) optional
$5 ace in the oaks ( all aces split ) optional
This year we will crown all the club champions and list them on display in the kiosk for the next year. This is always a blast so we hope to see you there.
Also we will be receiving 100 full color discs as fund raisers for the VPO that will be going on sale this Sunday the 12th. At $20 ea. these babies will be very special collectors pieces. We got permission from a British artist to use his work which is impressive to say the least and we're anticipating them going fast. This will be the only run so don't wait long.

There was nothing on the schedule about Cedar Hill. The Lewisville tournament earlier this year was moved to Cedar Hill because of flooding. Lewisville is now on the schedule for the week after VPO. I might actually be able to play my second tournament this year. Yippeee!

I was out at the park today and marked the trail to all three holes with orange tape that starts at 9s basket and finishes at 10s tee. I also marked each tee and basket with orange flags. I used yellow paint to mark all the brush we need to clear. The first two holes are not playable right now and as soon as we get clearance with Martin at the Parks Dept. we plan to make them playable. Anyone that wishes to can go back there and scope it out.

Sep 10 2007, 05:37 PM
In case you are wondering: The 3 TEMP holes that may or may not be used in this year's VPO are located behind Hole #9 and play in a loop endind just south of Hole #10. Right now it is very ROUGH and overgrown back there. Orange tape has been hung along the paths and potential fairways, a pair of pin flags mark the 3 pads, and a single pin flag marked the potential basket location.
1st TEMP hole played 85-90 feet straight before a hard left turn up a hill for another 100 or so feet. Total distance IN A STRAIGHT LINE equals 160 feet. There is plenty of room to make it longer/harder if needed.
2nd TEMP hole was nicely elevated and requires shooting to a much lower green through a tight gap. Total distance IN A STRAIGHT LINE equals 103 feet.(That's not a typo.) There is also a few different areas the basket could be placed, stretching it another 50-60 feet.
3rd TEMP hole is the nicest and probably requires the least amount of work. It tees from an elevated pad through a narrow fairway to a landing zone about 280 feet out. It then plays another 50 feet to the right where one basket could be located, or it can play another 100 feet to a second location. Total distance IN A STRAIGHT LINE equals 320 feet to the short location, or 375 feet to the longer location.
If you have some time during your next casual round be sure to check out the possible TEMP holes. Feedback is welcome. I personally think that they are *acceptable* TEMP holes, but if we are looking for something more permanent; then more time needs to be spent mapping the land. There is A LOT of land back there, let's not limit ourselves.
gotcha
Sep 10 2007, 06:54 PM
Okay....what's the deal? Are these "temp" holes just that or might they possibly become permanent? Either way, John's right about "A LOT of land back there".
arlskipshot1
Sep 10 2007, 08:29 PM
Hey Jerry, are you possibly considering making it to the VPO?
If we were to set up permanent holes back there, then the majority of members would want to consider losing other holes to keep it at 18 total. Perhaps #2 since the flow there is backwards and maybe #12 and #13 since there's one tree total on the two holes combined. Maybe leave the sleeves and rotate the layout??? We have some options, but in the meantime we're thinking it would be an interesting change to include three holes back there in the 24 hole layout we need for the VPO.
Hope you get the chance to see it.
my_hero

Getting rid of 2, 12, and 13 would be a horrible decision.
The City is considering letting us expand the course by a few holes. This is something that the City has never considered before. We can not pass this opportunity up. I'd personally like to see a few really wooded holes at The Vet, but let's take our time and find the best holes that the land offers. Then, like you said, Rotate the layout of what we play on Sundays/Wednesdays so that we play 18 holes.
Getting the 3 marked holes in before the VPO is totally doable, but i don't think some of them would be the right choices for perm holes given the land available.
I hope fellow ADGAers see the opportunity at hand.
arlskipshot1
Sep 11 2007, 08:39 AM
I totally agree with you, John. I didn't mean to imply that the majority wants to lose holes. It is true, though, from the feedback I'm getting, that the majority doesn't want to play more than 18 holes at a time so I've been saying that the options are losing holes or rotating. Truth is most don't want to lose holes so I'm seeing rotating as the solution.
I believe we should have a formal written "poll" to present at the Club Champioships along with the reminder that it will be club officers that will make the final decisions and encourage participation.
gotcha
Sep 11 2007, 09:34 AM
If there's the possibility of additional, permanent holes at Veterans Park, those new holes could simply be "lettered" as opposed to renumbering the course (or eliminating some holes altogether). I recall playing a course like that in Ann Arbor.....one could play the original 18....or one could play 18 plus the "A through F" holes to make a 24 hole course. I do like the idea of a blended 18 for minis and the like.
Either way, I think it would be great for the Vet to have some technical, woodsy holes. I always thought that large amount of land in the back corner of the park would make some good holes for expansion. If you're only looking at three additional holes, I believe there should be plenty of acreage to design one or two true par 4's in that loop? :p
sandalman
Sep 11 2007, 10:05 AM
yeah, in the long run theres plenty of room back there. the proposed temp #3 has potential for becoming a par 4.
i'm in with rotaton over elimination.

Hats off to Claydog and Skipper for a well run event!
Congrats to Claydog for becoming the ADGA member of the Year.
Though Nolan and i were tied after round 1, he put the smashing on us late in the 2nd round. After hole 4 there was a 3 way tie for 1st(nolan, maiuro, kerr) with Pepper only 1 back. Once we got out into the field Nolan starting going nuts with unanswered birdies on 11, 13, and 14. With 6 holes to go Nolan had me by 4 and Kerr by 3. It was time to concede to him and start ace running. That attitude netted me no ace and 2 5's coming in. :D
Here's the open champion list since the turn of the century(since most of us already know that Jendel ruled the late 90's):
2000 - Maiuro
2001 - Maiuro
