Send it to the new magazine maybe? Surely this new magazine will not ignore one of the best courses in the country. Shame that it is/was less than 4 hours away from Disc Golf World and they steadfastly refused to come down. I bet the new magazine won't ignore us.

did we take a group photo???

I forgot to take one for Fort Smith's looks like DGWN might of printed all that were sent in........

Remember that DGWN is the promoter behind the entire Ice Bowl, it would be sweet if the new mag still covered it in the same way, those issues with the Ice Bowl coverage are awesome tools to show potential sponsors

did ya'll notice the HOTB story in the mag? Looks like Eric's name somehow came out as Ed Bailey

Still cool to get in the mag, the past 2 years the box scores weren't even printed

Thank you!

As far as the picture, or mention in DGWN, it's not their fault.

We didn't get a group photo, and I only sent them a small writeup about the event.
Rick Rothstein knows what we have done over the past several years, and the impact it has on the residents in Newton County.
We'll really give folks something to talk about in 2008!

The 2007 Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl broke an Ice Bowl record in one very significant category- Total Donation per Resident of the County Served by the Charity. In 2007, we raised 27 cents for every resident of Newton County, Arkansas, or $1.00 for every 3.7 residents. The overall average of the four Ice Bowls that have been held at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is 20 cents per county resident, or $1.00 for every 5 residents.
By comparison, the record amount of $21,160.00 raised by the 2007 St. Cloud, MN Ice Bowl translated to 15 cents per county resident, or $1.00 for every 6.7 residents- very respectable ratios, but far short of the 2007 Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl figures.
The # 2 and #3 2007 Ice Bowl donations came from Charlotte, NC, and Arvada, CO, where they both raised 2 cents per county resident, or $1.00 for every 50 county residents.
One obvious contributing factor as to why the Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl raises more money than any other Ice Bowl on a per capita basis is because it is held in a geographically remote area of Arkansas, and in a county, Newton County, whose population is only 8,484- but the real reason why is the players.
To play in a Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl requires a commitment from the player. It’s not like driving across town to play in an Ice Bowl at your local course. None of the players at the 2007 Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl were residents of Newton County, or lived closer than a one-hour drive from Horseshoe Canyon Ranch. We even had two players drive all the way from South Carolina, and they are coming back for 2008. The majority of the players stayed at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, or nearby, for the Ice Bowl Friday and Saturday nights. The others drove in Saturday morning. None of them let the rain stop them from playing. No wimps, no whiners!
The 2008 Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl will be held on February 23rd, 2008, at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, and will benefit the Christian Food Room.

I have just been informed that all 13 of the cabins at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch have already been rented for the weekend of the February 23, 2008 Ice Bowl- and that they have all been rented by disc golfers!
This is the earliest the Ranch has sold out prior to any of our past disc golf weekends, and will only enhance the already positive relationship between the Ranch and the disc golf community.
Don't let the fact that the cabins at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch are sold out keep you from enjoying a weekend of disc golf in Buffalo River Country, as there are several other nearby lodging options available, and plenty of time to make arrangements.

I'd like to thank all of you that were fortunate enough to be able to already secure your cabins at the Ranch for the 2008 Ice Bowl. Your support is appreciated, and it makes a difference.

Myself and a few other people will be heading out to Horseshoe on Dec 13th. Any and all are welcome to come out there with us. We plan on playing 1 round on each course. However we are not sure how the long course plays now. Anyone willing to draw up a rough sketch of how it plays or maybe give a guided tour on the 13th. Either way a little direction would be great. Thanks :D

You can pre-register at Titledisc (http://titledisc.com/Events/2008HorshoeCanyon.php ), or you can wait and register Saturday morning.
The only meals being served will be lunch on Saturday during the Ice Bowl, and the free Saturday Night Dinner.
Lunch will be $5.00.
All donations for the free dinner will go to the Christian Food Room.
No e-Bay plans for this year, yet...

Guys, it is a pleasure to be a part of this community. I have been talking to some of my clients and we are trying to create a "tour" whereby you have to play in certain tournaments and so many over the course of the year, culminating with one at THE LODGE, and the winner gets a guaranteed $2500 or $3000 payday. Might go something like this, Qualifying tournaments would be like Horseshoe, Tulsa, a couple of other tournaments to be voted on and THE LODGE. I am not trying to make up any rules but my thoughts are if we have 5 tournaments identified that are part of the "midwest tour" so to speak, you can throw out your two worst scores and then play like the TWISTED FLYER OPEN and the lowest score from this tournament and two others would be the winner of the prize cash. The others could share in the purse and added money. I called Rotan to discuss it with him but have not heard back yet. What do you guys think? Wise, what address do I send that check to?PO BOX 549?

I was unable to secure a cabin for this year at Horseshoe so I am thinking of maybe just driving up for the day. But I am not completely sure I will make it. This is not enough for my Alma boy Chris Shelton (the 15 year old who kills most people at tourneys). He is really wanting to go. If anyone will have a place he can sleep or is for sure going up for the day, and wouldn't mind a tag-along, please let me know.
Thanks, AlmaWillie

Also, if anyone knows of a cabin coming open let me know that too. I would still like to go, but staying out of Horseshoe is just not the same. :(

I’m really excited about this year’s Ice Bowl, and the impact it will have on the people in Newton County who receive assistance from the Christian Food Room.
Since the first Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Ice Bowl was held in 2004, the largest donations made to the Christian Food Room each year have come from the HCR Ice Bowls. Through the past four HCR Ice Bowls we have made a positive impact on the lives of many residents of Newton County. That tradition will continue on February 23, 2008, with HCR Ice Bowl #5.

I am pleased to be able to announce that the 2008 Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Ice Bowl will produce a donation to the Christian Food Room that will exceed last year’s donation of $2,250.00. I have a feeling that we are going to raise an insane amount this year.

Q.- How does a one-day charity Disc Golf tournament held in the least populated county, and one of the most remote areas, in Arkansas raise so much money?

A.- Through the generosity of the players, the sponsors, the people who attend the Saturday Night Dinner, and the winning bidders in the Silent Auction.

Here’s how the players contribute:
- The entry fee includes a $5.00 cash donation to the Christian Food Room.
- The money raised through the sale of “Mulligans” is also donated to the Christian Food Room.

The sponsors of this year’s Ice Bowl contribute in a variety of ways by donating their money, their time, their possessions, and their talent. The list will grow over the next few days, but here are some of the folks we can thank for already making the 2008 HCR Ice Bowl a success:

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch- The host of the Ice Bowl assists by allowing us to reserve all of their cabins for Ice Bowl participants, to use the Lodge for Ice Bowl activities, and by donating the $5.00 daily course fee that is part of each players entry fee.
The Vansandts- Our chefs for the Saturday Night Dinner are back again this year. Fish’s parents will be facing the challenge presented by our next sponsor.
Josh “DaWookie” Byers- Stepping up to the plate this year by providing the protein for the Saturday Night Dinner, and other assorted treats.
Kelly “Keldog” Watson- His generosity never ceases to amaze me. Keldog has donated some sweet stuff for the Silent Auction.
The Lodge at Pawhuska- An unsolicited, but greatly appreciated, donation from across the border. A testimony to the unconditional commitment of a welcome addition to our Disc Golf community.
Twisted Flyer- You never know what Joe Rotan will come up with, but you can be sure it will be “Twisted”.
Brooks Graphics- I called on a favor from an old friend in order to have the “trophies” for the divisional winners made. They are unique, and original.
Tiny Tim’s Pizza/ West Mountain Brewery- More swag (or is it schwag) for the Silent Auction.
Marvin’s IGA- With no breakfast being served Saturday morning, I was worried folks would show up hungry and expecting to eat. Marvin’s is supplying us with a variety of fruit, Wookie has a few precooked breakfast items, and I think I can get someone to donate some donuts/pastries, as well as some coffee. I’ll put up a highly visible receptacle for donations. Nobody has to play on an empty stomach, and the money raised through the donations becomes a welcome addition to our overall total.
Northwest Arkansas Disc Golf Association (NWADGA)- This is who, technically, gets credit for the donation that is ultimately made to the Christian Food Room. Seems only right they should try to sweeten the pot.
Western Arkansas Disc Golf Association (WAFDA)- At the time I posted this, WAFDA wasn’t confirmed as a sponsor. I just have a feeling they’ll help out if they can. I can count them, anyway, because I have some of their stuff left over from last year.
Blockbuster Video- I once rented 100 movies in a 30-day period, and it’s finally paying off.

It looks like we might get a little help from Mother Nature this year as the forecast is calling for temperatures in the low 60’s, and no rain until later that night. Considering the number of players that are already staying at the Canyon, those that have made hotel reservations in Jasper, the folks who are renting other cabins in the area, and those who drive in for the day, we could have a really big turnout.

More to come…

For any of you still "on the fence" about attending this year, the latest addition to our sponsor list may just be enough to entice you.

The Valley Cafe, locate on the square in Kingston, AR, will be a sponsor again this year. Last year, one of their Chocolate Cream Pies sold for $28.00 in the Silent Auction.

How can you turn down the chance to win a CTP that has a homemade Pecan Pie as your prize?

Many thanks to the members of the NWADGA, and of WAFDA, for confirming their roles as sponsors again this year. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Recent additions to the sponsor list are Baba Boudan’s Roastery, Tim Ernst, Kyle Power, Jerry Power, and the Shawnee Mission (KS) North High School Class of 1976. Special thanks to the Power family.

One of the things I really enjoyed doing at last year’s Ice Bowl was making available a running tally that showed people, at any time, how much money had been raised through entry fees, mulligans, donated cash for am payout, dinner donations, silent auction proceeds, etc... I will be doing this, again, at this year’s Ice Bowl. I think that by doing this I am providing everyone with some “ownership” in regards to seeing the impact of their contributions, as well as assuring them that their contributions have been properly accounted for.

This year’s contribution to the Christian Food Room will basically come from eight different areas-
1. Entry fee donations (# of players X $5.00)
2. Course fee donation from HCR (# of players X $5.00)
3. Mulligan donations (# of players X $10.00 average)
4. Am payout matching donation (?)
5. Breakfast donations
6. Saturday Night Dinner donations
7. Silent Auction proceeds
8. Cash donations

The amount of money we raise from the first four areas (1-4) will be contingent upon the number of players that register, but I can make a pretty accurate prediction of what the amount will be for a hypothetical “X” number of players.
-50 players will generate at least $1,400.00 from areas #1-4 above.
-60 players will generate at least $1,650.00 from areas #1-4 above.
-70 players will generate at least $1,900.00 from areas #1-4 above.
-80 players will generate at least $2,150.00 from areas #1-4 above.
Keep in mind these are just estimates…

I am very hopeful that the breakfast donations, the Saturday Night Dinner donations, and the Silent Auction proceeds, will add another $1,000.00 to our final total. Again, just an estimate…

At this time, the amount of cash donated, and/or pledged, totals $750.00. This is not an estimate, and is separate from the money that has already been donated to cover the Am payout.

Last year, it took a $3,000.00 donation to make the Ice Bowl Top Ten. I expect that it will take more than that to get in the Top Ten this year.

Our first four Ice Bowl’s have raised a total of $6,651.00. If we raise $3,349.00 this year, the total of our five donations to the Christian Food Room will be $10,000.00 - and we could wind up in the 2008 Ice Bowl Top Ten.

I'm sorry to report that the short course has been removed because the baskets were falling apart and the horses were getting cut on them. Yes, even the back nine. :(
This means that with no short course, and in anticipation of a large turnout, we will probably only be playing 18 holes during the Ice Bowl.
In order to make up for playing less disc golf, I will boost the payout of the Pro and Am divisions to 120% of what they would normally be. Payout will go to the top 40% of each division.
I'll also start the ace pot off at $100.00, and then we'll add the $1.00 contributions from any players that want to enter.
We'll also have a Ring of Fire, and some CTP's on top of that.
The only meals being served this weekend are a $5.00 lunch during the Ice Bowl, and the Saturday Night Dinner. I hope that the folks staying nearby, and in Jasper, will be able to attend the dinner this year. It's gonna' be good!
No Breakfasts! We will have a limited amount of breakfast stuff in case of emergency, or to hold you over until you tee-off. Unless, we get a really big number this year we will still use the rollng start.
The Ranch no longer provides free firewood, but they do have some for sale. If you have your own, and want to save a few bucks, bring it with you.

Unfortunately my parents are not going to be able to make it to Horseshoe for the weekend. Don't worry we are still eating like kings Saturday night, but their cabin is available to rent. I will be heading over Friday afternoon so if any one is interested send me a pm before then to reserve or find me there tonight. Fish

A lot of things fell into place for the 2008 HCR Ice Bowl, and the result was that we ended up raising a total of $3,280.11.
This year, I wanted to find a way to provide our players, and sponsors, more "ownership" in regards to their contributions. I also though it was important that the Christian Food Room have an opportunity to meet some disc golfers, and to see how we raise the money for them.
Both of those things were accomplished when Betty Stivers, of the Christian Food Room, came to our Saturday Night Dinner and I was able to present her with a "preliminary" donation of $3,200.00. Mrs. Stivers expressed her gratitude for this (and past) year's contributions, and told the group what a difference we have made over the past five year's. It was, truly, one of my favorite disc golf moments.

More to come...

Thanks Slinger,

For some reason the WAFDA site is blocked by a firewall at school, and my home computer took a dump, so this is my only connection.

I also have some good news for you. While deer hunting this weekend I came across a black putter (Twisted Flyer) and a ?yellow? (faded) Max. They were both within 30 feet of the target (barrel) on hole 7 at my house. (I told you that Max got close!!!)

I am going to go over a few other areas and try to turn up some other discs now that the undergrowth is dying out. I'll contact all the folks whose discs I find!! :)

We just got the last cabin. Josh Blackwell is flying in from New York to go to the ice bowl and he needs a ride to the cannon. He has a ride back but, needs a little help getting down. If you could help that would be awesome. His number is 479-799-1457. See you guys in a month peace!

What is this about? Was Horseshoe really damaged by the ice? Anyone know anything on this?

I called the Ranch and they have no major damage, there are a few downed trees but no known damage to the baskets ect,

I think that Ron is asking about setting up the old short course that's no longer there

All's good and any serious questions should probably be sent to Jeff Ash, he don't get on here much, his contact info can be found at icebowlhq.com, just look at the schedule and find Horseshoe Canyon Ice Bowl
