What's the deal on disc golfers who are doctors and always want to be called doctor?
Like Dr. Stancil Johnson MD. Nobody just says Stancil or Stan, or something. It's DOCTOR. Wooo hooo, big doctor. And they always say DOCTOR Rick Voalks. Never Rick or "dude" or "hey you." It's DOCTOR. And that guy up in Maine I forgot his name, all I remember is DOCTOR yadda yadda yadda. And Fred Chittenden, he was DOCTOR Fred.
I think this is funny cause I'm a doctor and nobody even knows it, and I don't give a shiite about it. I just think it's funny that other doctors have to say it all the time.
What's the deal with all these disc golf DOCTORS?

Are you an MD or a PhD?

Dr. John Duesler, PhD.
Many of us grew up with "What's up, Doc?" and now "Nice up, Doc!" just seems right.

Troll
I suspect those guys get called Dr. out of respect, not only because they compose themselves in a professional manner, but also because they have made significant contributions to the sport.

I'm guessing its more of a nickname type thing. Like no one calls me Robert....

And what's the deal with everyone having to call the Pope, "Pope Benedict the 16th"??? Why can't we just call him Benny, or 16??? I mean I'm a Pope, and I don't care if people don't call me Pope Donkey.

A catholic friend calls him "Joey Rats".
I have a masters degree... maybe I should have folks call me the "Mistress of Science". OK, maybe not...

A3Disc is rife with doctors: Dr. Hower, Dr. Peck, Dr. Calhoun. The ones in academia use their doctor appellation professionally, but I don't often hear them called doctor by disc golfers.
I think Marie Schwinn is a doctor now, too, or maybe almost a doctor. I think she is or will be some kind of doctor of chemicals. When I know it is official, I'm fine with Dr. Marie.
Usually J.D.s don't get called doctor, but there are two lawyers who always call me Dr. Brakel. One of them said, "Well, it's my job to twist the law and you are the one who untwists it, so it is kind of like you are a chiropractor."

Morgan is an optometrist. Typically they complete a 4 year undergraduate program plus optometry school and receive the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.

I thought this was a reference to his using "medicine" to "treat glaucoma"... but then, I don't know the guy :D

Wouldn't that be Dr. Morgan Wright ODD?
Let's see -- I have an M.A. in philosophy, so I should expect to be called "Master Karl" on the DG course? And when I ask a question, e.g., "can you believe how far off my shot was?," the answer will be "yes, master" or "no, master?" Interesting... :D

I don't know, why shoot for Master, go for Buddha! "Yes Buddha," said with a small deferential bow.

Dr. Doug Ertman is a MD and a family doctor and perhaps one of the coolest disc golfers ever. I've heard a lot of people call him doug, but Dr. Doug just sounds soo much cooler.

I'm a masters student in Computer Science, and could possibly get my PhD before all is said and done. Of course, I won't have any world championships to hang next to that piece of paper like some other doctors...
I wonder how many doctors can claim tour wins..
Now that is something - to be a doctor and the champ!
Mr. Champ Doctor - twice the role model.

My boss has a doctorate in mechanical engineering and he is the only "doctor" in our office. We religously refer to him as doctor but it is more of a mocking than anything. We usually then go on to tease him about something medical related since he is an engineer.

One of my personal all time favorite play on that word combo is the name of a local barbecue/grilling team, "The Master Basters". :D
