traditionally, Alan has just picked someone.
It has been him, Sam Nicholson, Dave Gilstrap twice, Ed Williams, and Billy Crump.

I have no clue.
I have always propossed that you pick a date (say last weekend at BVC) and the open player with the most NC series points from NC that is not qualified gets in. It rewards players who stay in state, support tournaments all over the state, and play well in these tournaments.

Who this year? They do have 3 days left!!
This years state rep is Stan McDaniel. Last I heard from Alan, it was down to 3 people
Larry Leonard - been to every USDGC event, 2nd in Masters @ '05 worlds, 1 masters win this year
Brian McRee - has been to every USDGC event, 2 wins this year, has been playing well lately
myself - 4th '05 am worlds, '05 Advanced NC points champ, in the running for Rookie of the Year for '06
& Pro NC points
I believe we are all well qualified. Now all of the sudden Stan has been picked. He has only played one tournament this year. He has been very sick also so I'm not even sure if he's up to playing at all. Something has def got to change next year.

Stan is a great choice. It's not about picking the guy who will the event, its about choosing a state representative. Stan has busted his arse for this sport and I'm proud he will be representing our state at USDGC, especially after a tough year where he has been sick.

I'm guessing you meant 'who will win the event' and I never said that it was about that. And I'm fully aware of what he has done for the sport, thank you. There were only 3 guys that even showed intrest in the position. Stan was not one of them. You said yourself people that support the NC points series should be up high on the list. It's nothing against Stan, its the process of the decision. I'm going to go back and use the ingore feature on you again.

Why do you guys feel a need to go after each other with jabbing remarks? Leave the past in the past.
What has Stans' sickness been?
I am surprised that such a deeply developed disc golf state is still under infant dictatorship on decisions like this. I don't care who is going just as long as someone is (point of post).
Get well soon Stan

Just to let people know Alan did solicit input this year and actually asked a few people to "vote" on the canidates for this coveted spot.
No matter who is chosen each year there will always be issues with the process. As a state we are a strong disc golf state and we have many people (everybody) that would love to play in this event. The difficult part is determining who "deserves" to go.
The best advice for anybody that would like to represent the state is to show good sportsmanship on and off the course. I know that the people on the list this year have shown sportsmanship at times and it has been noticed by many within the state.
We have a lot of great volunteers in this state that do a lot of work on the courses as well as behind the scenes work. Stan is one of these people that has done a lot for the state. We in raleigh may not realize this as much as much of Stans work is done in Charlotte as well as behind the scenes work.
I wish stan the best of luck at USDGC this year and hope that those that did not receive the spot can qualify at one of the remaining events (http://www.usdgc.com/qualifyingevents.htm) for this great event.
I am personally looking forward to taking the week off to volunteer again at this prestigious event.

You of all people do certainly not get a vote.. :p
Right now I am having more fun on the other side of the ropes though helping out with this great event. I am hoping to set the bar even higher this year with the online coverage for those that can not make it to the event in person.

Alan asked us who we thought it should be months ago and we said..either him or Stan...No offence to anyone else. There are many great players in the state and even more deserving people. Stan is a workhorse. He chooses not to attend events(even close ones) because he has last minute things he wants to finish on a course. He is a motivater and a leader in our sport...I also believe personally that he is an incredible golfer and person on and off the course. A rep should have both these things...Stan the MAN, the MULE...Skeet skeet...However...I think next year there should be a vote for members of clubs in NC....

E O G you can be a Real ***** sometimes.
How am I an *****? Because I think its wrong how the best disc golf state in the WORLD picks their USDGC rep and I voice my opinion about it? Do all of you think its fair for Alan to just say 'OK, I choose you to go to the most prestigious tournament in the sport'? Do you think if the state coordinator was from Raleigh, that someone from Charlotte would be picked? Most states hold a tournament for the spot or at least have some known set way to pick the rep. Do you think if we held a tournament for the spot, Stan would have wanted to play USDGC so bad that he would have come out and played? I can think of about 10 golfers right now that would sacrifice a ton for that spot. Some Alan probably never even considered. Some have already posted on this thread.
This isn’t about me. I’m not even upset I didn’t get chosen because I knew there wasn’t a chance in hell for me. I’ve only been playing 3½ years, what could I have done for the sport compared to someone like Stan? How could I be as respected as LL or Cracken? Plus I barely know Alan and I’m sure that didn’t help me out. But some people are furious and could you blame them? I never said Stan was a bad choice. READ WHAT I'M SAYING. Stan is freaking awesome for the sport and I like the guy a lot. He’s in the freaking DG hall of fame for god sake, of course he’s a good state rep. But in a state with this much talent, with so many qualified players, no one person should be allowed to pick. At the very least, it should be up to an organized group of elected people.
NC deserves better and I haven't talked to one person who says they like how our rep is picked and if you say you do then you're lying. I'm pretty sure Stan himself doesn't agree with our selection process. So if you agree with how we choose, then go ahead, call me an *****. Reply and reem me a new one. But if you don't agree, then say so, and help us change the way we choose a rep from this great state.
Thanks for all the supportive PMs and I wish Stan a full recovery from his illness and the best of luck at USDGC.

Okay, it's SUPER Bad.We get that. How do we fix it?
All clubs that host a NC Points event get one vote for the rep?
A tournament for the position?
Select people vote?
You dont fix something with nothing

To me its a simple solution.....have a one day, two round tourney, centrally located for all non qualified players. If you want it that bad you will come. I agree that the process is jaded in such a competitive state.
How does TX, CA, OK, IA, Fl and other strong states handle this ?

harold has requested in the past that the state rep spots be played for if possible. we have always played for the va spot. we do it as an add-on to 2 other events on the same weekend- the $10 each player who wishes to qualify must pay goes towards the qualifying player's entry fee to usdgc.

How easy is that....makes complete sense.
Stan should get an auto invite anyway.

MTL has suggested that the player with the most NC points at the time who has yet to qualify should get the spot. Any of that is better than what we have right now.

Agreed.

the problem s that the some of the best players choose to travel and therefore miss N.C. pts events....Its not fair to them...I think it should be a vote...The clubs can decide and put up candidates...plus this adds another benefit to being a current member...A VOTE!!....Whatever...I live in a suitcase...Is there a town in NC called Suitcase...anyway...Might be calling the POrTT city home soon so...Bamn!!!!!

MY whole reasoning for wanting it to be NC points is b/c that does exact what you don't want - it rewards players for staying in state and supporting NC Events. If we simply picked the guy with the most winnings or the highest player rating, that's not right. I belive State rep means someone who probably can't qualify on his own and has earned the right to play the best tournament in the world. IT shouldn't reward a good player whose having a bad year.

This has been a problem for years. I believe all of the state reps. in the past have been chosen from bribes or the closeness of their relationship with Alan. I have talked to Harold about the decision making process and he told me that it was totally up to the state coordinator. Is this fair? Not in my opinion. It's totally bias. NC should follow in Va. footsteps and hold a tournament (even if it is in Charlotte) to determine the state rep. NC points and club voting, shouldn't decide our rep. The timing of the decision is also an issue. Here it is, the 1st week in August when we find out. The USDGC is six weeks away. Players need more time to ask off form work and to mail their entry. Not to mention if they don't get picked as state rep., they'll need to find another qualifying site. These are just opinions.

Drop the whole state rep qualification.
For that matter drop the TD excemption as well. The USDGC is well past the point were you need field fillers to get people to come to the event. Broaden the qualification (7 or 8 spots per qualifier or so). You'll have a higher quality of talent if *everyone* has to qualify in the same way.
State based qualifications tournaments (what VA, TN, etc do) are a decent solution to a bad problem.
I do find it humorous that the people complaining are the ones that didn't play well enough at a qualifier or didn't go to enough qualifiers to begin with.
Personally I'd like to see the USDGC adopt something like this. (http://www.masters.org/en_US/scores/bios/qualifications.html)

I would like to see a Nationwide standard for the state rep spot. My idea would be something like this.
Each county in the state that has a PDGA directory recognized course hold one, one day 2 rd tourney. with a set number of players moving on.
These would take place starting the week after the usdgc until Feb.
Depending on the number of county tourneys, Have regional qualifiers. (IE Wilmington/Raleigh/Charlotte/Ashville) Takeing 10 players from each region to play in a Final tourney for the spot.
The regionals completed Mar-May. With the final being held in June.

Drop the whole state rep qualification.
The USDGC is well past the point were you need field fillers to get people to come to the event.
The state rep position is not filler. Its to make sure that at least one person from EVERY state is able to attend the tournament.

I agree that there should be no state reps...as of now only 27states use these anyway...I think sponsorship spots should be the only way to get in without qualifying....right!??! I mean thats what we need. It is a way for people to get out there and petition for major sponsors to get involved and help them get into the event.

I somewhat agree, a state rep should be the most qualified player, that does not have an automatic bid. Politics should back off, this player needs to be identified 90 days out. 10 players shoot it out at Horizons for the spot. Centrally located in NC Not to forget those whom lead by example, are a good role model in their community, and could represent NC to a high standard. The one that shows up to the course early, and passes on helpful hints to am's, or at least communicates with them.

Here in NJ we have always used our biggest event the Jersey Jam, as the qualifier for USDGC. The NJ resident with the lowest score from that event gets the invite. The cost is usually $25 with the proceeds going to the winner of that spot.
We have sent a State Rep every year since its inception and I personally think it should continue. :D:D:cool:
