My name is Lowe Bibby, and I'd like to tell you about a unique disc golf event called "The Great Eight".
The Great Eight, North Carolina's 8th annual Disc Golf Ironman competition, will be held on Sat. July 8th. We'll play 144 holes on eight central NC courses in one day! We start at dawn and play until dark.
This year’s route is Zebulon -- Cedar Hills (Raleigh) -- Kentwood -- Buckhorn (New Hill) -- UNC (Chapel Hill) -- Valley Springs (Durham) -- Wellspring (Burlington) -- Cedarock. We only play in pairs for flow of play, so find a partner and come tackle these eight courses.
*Please Note: there was recently some storm damage to Buckhorn and there is a possibility that we won’t be able to play that course after all. We’ll keep in touch with all registered players to let them know.
Unfortunately, though, this year the Great 8 will not be a formal event as it has been in the past. There will be no entry fees, no prizes, and very little pre-tournament organization. All scores will be tabulated at some time in the weeks following the event, so if you want to know the final results make sure that I have an email address for you. We’ll will try to get some scorecards and information to you via email, but we make no guarantees. This year Jay Pontier will be in charge of the event. You can reach him at jay.pontier(at)gmail.com
Again this year some pairs may want to play Best shot Doubles. The best Doubles scores will be noted for the G8 record book.
The emphasis of the Great 8 is on having fun by meeting the challenge, but there will be recognition of winners in several categories. Although there will be no prizes the winner will still be the player with the lowest overall score. There will also be recognition of the lowest score per division, course CTPs, and the CTP of the day. The pair with the fastest course playing times will also be recognized. (Can anyone beat Frank and Derrick’s time this year?) .
Pre-registration is still required because we start at 6:15 a.m. After the event begins you cannot just jump in and start if you arrive late because you may get in the way of players who need to play those holes. If you don’t start with the original shotgun start then you have to wait until 7:30 a.m. to begin. There are only 36 spots available, and we may have a full field, so don't delay. Also, the best starting holes will be given out in the order that registrations are received, so it benefits you to register early. Registration must be received by the deadline of Sat. July 1st.
If you plan to play then please email Jay Pontier at <jay.pontier(at)gmail.com>. After you notify us that you are playing we'll try to send you all the score cards and the information that you need to prepare for the event. If you tell us you are going to play and then change your mind please have the courtesy to tell me or Jay in advance so that we can reassign your starting hole.
Best regards,
Lowe Bibby
