View Full Version : Nomad Doubles Poll

As some of you know I am pulling up stakes at Patapsco and taking the Saturday doubles on the road starting with the as yet unannounced next location and date. This will begin the existence of the Maryland Nomads. The name of this forum will change soon to reflect this rebirth. This is coming about primarily because Rich and I want to tour like we used to, but I have been tied down to Patapsco the past season and a half. We also want to play doubles as we have gambling problems and a Saturday doubles rotating among courses solves two problems at once.

Two issues have come up with the current format of doubles and they are of the kind that I'm willing to let you the consumer decide. The first has been the cost. Generally doubles seems to be $2 which I guess was set because you had two players. I was charging $3 as we didn't have an ace pot, but now we do thanks to Ski. :p The Swamp charges $5 on Sunday. My personal preference aside neither figure helps me limit my making change hassles as people still show up with tens and if you're the Maryland State Coordinator twenties. So the deciding factor should be what potential players would be willing to pay. The acepot remains an optional $1 with each plan.

The second issue is what to do with the odd man out. I'll continue to call this player the Joker even though I have retired the short lived playing card draw technique. However several of the regular attendees have objected to the concept of the Uber Team. I do like the Uber Team option for someone who came to play doubles, and does not want to play singles which is the counterpoint to those who came to play doubles, and protest having to play against triples. I do want to have one definitive solution here, and eliminate the option of choosing by the person who draws the Joker poker chip. Therefore the winning Joker solution here is how I'll roll from now on. If the odd player out doesn't want to play under the rule voted on here that person can pound sand and leave. To quote Sunday doubles host Neil,

I call it the S.O.L. rule.

I'm willing to let this poll decide what the cost will be and how the Joker will have to play at Nomad Doubles. The poll will end Friday evening in the event that I do run Doubles this Saturday. The votes will be secret until then to eliminate peer pressure and heighten the suspense. I'll announce no later than the conclusion of the poll what the upcoming Nomad Doubles schedule will be so players will know the deal and the location. Please feel free to campaign for your preferences via post.

you forgot an option-- to give the joker the option of paying twice. he can simply pay his $5 and play regularly, or pay another $5 and get two throws for every shot. gotta give the joker the choice.

Naw. I wanted to make it as simple as possible, so I want you all to decide what the Joker will do. Technically they still have an option: play as the Joker as determined by your votes, or roll. It's mindnumbing when someone has to choose between paying double or doing something else etc. Remember we've already usually waited ten extra minutes for Rich to arrive.

yeah, i have to agree with paul. forcing the joker to pay double is pretty lame. as i told you before the joker should have the option of one mulligan per hole or pay double and throw double. otherwise it isn't fair. and if there is a possibility of getting hosed with the joker, why even bother showing up? one extra throw per hole isn't enough for a lower level player to compete, uber team is unfair, and forcing someone to pay double is also unfair. you have no choices that make sense. i voted for the least offensive which is the one mulligan, but you should change that.

I can't believe it's come to this, but I agree with 857 and The Load. I agree with both of them. At the same time. On the same issue. The world must be coming to an end. I must retire to a corner and weep silently for awhile.

mindnumbing for the feeble minded (like greg), right?

that's what we do down here in virginny.

Am I understanding this to mean that the consensus here is that the Joker should be allowed to choose between going out as a solo act at the yet to be determined entry fee, or the winning poll choice? I could probably live with that outcome. However, you people are soft.

John,

Susi says it's the one extra throw per hole must take rule in VA. You boys need to settle this amongst yourselves.

I'd go with John's opinion... everybody knows that Susi plays:

1.) Naked in West Virginia
2.) Occasionally in Maryland
3.) Through holes he's cut in his pockets

Clearly he doesn't qualify as the VA expert. ;)

Susi has told me he no longer plays naked. This is an obvious ploy to garner a Nobel Peace Prize.

Rich Myers: Age 42. Comes to the realization that life is unfair. Stay tuned for other stunning revelations as he brings them to us.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear:

Opt. 1 - Skitzo player gets one additional shot per hole no caveats attached

opt 2 - Player gets to have two shot per lie, but if the second shot is thrown..it must be taken (this is the only option we ever charged double for)

Kelly I thought you were weeping? did you really mean creeping?

Actually, I was planning on doing some peeping this Saturday... but is it true you've given up NudeDiscGolf? Even when Piper isn't around? Geez, the only reason I go to Paw Paw is for the scenery... :D

Okay people please vote here (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=558726&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=1&fpart=1) for the Joker rule. That poll will determine the rule. Sure the outcome based on commentary this morning seems obvious, but you never know. All votes here in the Joker poll will be considered void, but keep voting here for the entry fee.

I know. I wonder why I even bother. It's not as pointless as Rich's censorship crusade on the minor leagure bored though.

i think she was laughing at biscoe's stab at the beautiful, scenic and safe druid hill dgc.

druid has come a long way during the past couple of years. sightings of "weird incidents" have been fewer and farther apart. i haven't even seen the cops cuff anyone in two years plus. you ought to make it up for a TNT, john!

That's not going to encourage a Nomads stop. That was the appeal for me.

alas! we're doing something right to keep the riff-raff away. the nomad stop is welcome to come out to TNT though. even hawk has a chance to win!

If I could make Thursday nights do you really think I'd be going through all this aggravation for Saturday?

Curiously there has been very little chatter about the cost. That will be the big surprise I guess on Friday.
