As some of you know I am pulling up stakes at Patapsco and taking the Saturday doubles on the road starting with the as yet unannounced next location and date. This will begin the existence of the Maryland Nomads. The name of this forum will change soon to reflect this rebirth. This is coming about primarily because Rich and I want to tour like we used to, but I have been tied down to Patapsco the past season and a half. We also want to play doubles as we have gambling problems and a Saturday doubles rotating among courses solves two problems at once.
Two issues have come up with the current format of doubles and they are of the kind that I'm willing to let you the consumer decide. The first has been the cost. Generally doubles seems to be $2 which I guess was set because you had two players. I was charging $3 as we didn't have an ace pot, but now we do thanks to Ski. :p The Swamp charges $5 on Sunday. My personal preference aside neither figure helps me limit my making change hassles as people still show up with tens and if you're the Maryland State Coordinator twenties. So the deciding factor should be what potential players would be willing to pay. The acepot remains an optional $1 with each plan.
The second issue is what to do with the odd man out. I'll continue to call this player the Joker even though I have retired the short lived playing card draw technique. However several of the regular attendees have objected to the concept of the Uber Team. I do like the Uber Team option for someone who came to play doubles, and does not want to play singles which is the counterpoint to those who came to play doubles, and protest having to play against triples. I do want to have one definitive solution here, and eliminate the option of choosing by the person who draws the Joker poker chip. Therefore the winning Joker solution here is how I'll roll from now on. If the odd player out doesn't want to play under the rule voted on here that person can pound sand and leave. To quote Sunday doubles host Neil,
I call it the S.O.L. rule.
I'm willing to let this poll decide what the cost will be and how the Joker will have to play at Nomad Doubles. The poll will end Friday evening in the event that I do run Doubles this Saturday. The votes will be secret until then to eliminate peer pressure and heighten the suspense. I'll announce no later than the conclusion of the poll what the upcoming Nomad Doubles schedule will be so players will know the deal and the location. Please feel free to campaign for your preferences via post.
