"That Cotton Pickin' Disc Golf Tourney" will be held in Lubbock in mid-October. The weather is perfect for DG playing in October in Lubbock. Present plan is to play three rounds (possibly not all at Mackenzie...more later). The tourney will be a PDGA 'C'. The course, as always, will be in great shape. If you have never played Mackenzie give this one a try. If it's been a while, things have changed a little, so come try it again. Finally, if you are a local-ish player that does not 'tourney' any or little, this tourney is for you. OCTOBER 14/15, 2006

Well, I just got back from Tulsa. I though I'd take a break after playing for a week (actually more if you consider course testing, etc.). Anyway, I can't help it. I really want to get 100 players for the CP. Please, contact me with ideas, thoughts, etc. How can you help? We need sponsors! Cash is always preferred, but certificates for merchandise/services are appreciated as well (or combinations). The time is now to begin asking for sponsors (not the week or two before). I can help with letters, etc. if needed.

We're progressing okay, but as always, we need more sponsor work. We need the local sponsors and the out of towners (hint). It's one thing that we discussed at the meeting. We want to make sure that we (Lubbock) supports the local/regional events by sending players AND giving some support in form of a donation. I think maybe we miss a few here and there, but intentions are to support if possible. We'll be doing 24 holes that were similar to the BAB. My plan is to be long, long, long on the final round. We're having doubles on Friday. Long Drive will also be held on Friday. Ace pot is part of entry fee. I've got a few other things up my sleeve to make this a good one to visit. The course is in good shape, by game time we'll have it in great shape. I'm planning a course work day (likely Sept 23 and then a final tune up a week before the tourney). I might be out of my mind....but my goal is to get 100 players. So, get your groups together now and plan to head to That Cotton Pickin' Tourney. If you have not played Mackenzie Park lately....well, that's too long!

We are at around $1,000 sponsorship right now. I have my sponsor 'run' still to go and I suspect there will be several others begin to come in. We're doing very well for a C-tier event. Also, I ordered player package supercolor discs with a Chris Zagone designed That Cotton Pickin' logo. I think everyone will really like them. I ordered 100...and I hope that all 100 are given out at the tourney! The word was spread in Sipapu at NM Doubles....I think our NM friends are ready to come experience Lubbock DG again! The course is in great shape (near finished trimming). I'd like to take care of some erosion areas around pads and baskets....Larry where are you? Stephen and I purchased pipe last week and cut/welded new sleeves for the damaged positions...get ready. Please contact me for sponsors, course maintenance (trash, trim, erosion, OB, etc.), event help (run doubles, run long drive, registration, scoring, payout, final nine, etc.). I really, really need the help to run a smooth one.

Here we go. Most of this is on the flyers...but some clarification:

All players are encouraged to play in this event! That means local college, local other, regional players, and anyone else. There are six players from Arlington coming, six from Clovis, yet to be determined from Albuquerque, yet to be determined from Amarillo, Abilene, Big Spring, Wichita Falls, Midland/Odessa, Ft. Stockton, Roswell, DFW area, and so on.

Each round will consist of 24 holes. I've pulled back from this. The Sat rounds will be 24 holes. On Sunday, I want to cater to travelers, so we're cutting the ABC holes out and then will play 21 holes. The baskets are presently in the format (mostly Long - Short - Medium) for the first round (well nearly). Generally, we will then go Long - Short - Long for the second round (about 7-8 baskets move) and then Long - Long - Long for the last round (another 7-8 baskets move). Marcace has again agreed to handle OB markings (thanks!). Closest to Basket awards will be given for each round - 18 for round 1, 17 for round 2, 16 for round 3). Ace pot fee is part of entry. The first round is the time to hit an ace...the last round (L-L-L) will be difficult to ace anything. We'll throw off if no aces hit (more detail will be posted). Ring of Fire: I'm loaded with assorted give-away stuff. I would like every player to leave with something extra. That brings to mind registration. Remember, all players must fill out the paperwork (I'll be out Thursday and most of Saturday). Local players, please sign up early! Then ALL players must check in Sat am to get packages and to ensure you're still breathing (makes filling out cards easier if we know you made it). Also, at that time, as part of the player package, will get choice of a disc, a $9.00-ish value card from Freebird's (these burritos are VERY good), a Carrino's desert card, and stickers, etc.

Friday - Pick-Your-Partner doubles (Best Shot / Best Score / PPD, $10 per team, cash payout, pro and am division, flex start 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.). Marcace and Sheri will be running the doubles. Winners get cash and a prize.

Long Drive Friday 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.(5 throws, $5, divisions: junior, men, women, don't have to be in tourney to participate). There will alos be an opportunity to drive after Round 2. Albert volunteered to run the Long Drive.

Saturday
Registration at 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. (all players must check-in on Sat.). JJ's mom will have breakfast burritos and coffee for sale in the Outdoor Center BOTH MORNINGS! Player’s meeting at 9:00 a.m. (must attend), Round 1, lunch break for one hour after last card turned in. Furlis will have BBQ after Round 1 (but not confirmed just yet). Round 2, party.

Sunday
JJ's mom's breakfast burritos. Player’s meeting at 9:00 a.m., Round 3, playoffs if needed (holes will be posted), Saffari Final Nine, awards (. The Windriders Disc Golf Club will handle the payouts. Rob ordered a bunch of new discs and baskets and other misc.

I hope this explains things....

And a few more things. I promised sponsors that I would be the 'shadow' marketing director. First, Freebirds really does support disc golf...not just in College Station, but in Lubbock. Every player will get a $9-ish value card for a Monstor Burrito and add on's. I personally make two meals out of the thing. There is presently one location in Lubbock and several others in the state. In Lubbock, Freebirds is at 4930, Loop 289. A second location is going in near Tech. Billiards Plus gave $100 cash. Sanctioned tournaments are held regularly at Billiards Plus. They are sponsoring That Cotton Pickin’ at Mackenzie this year. If disc golfers begin to play some pool and have some refreshments at Billiards, then the plan is to expand sponsorship when the course at McAlister goes in. Visit them at 5610 Frankford and ask for Peach. They want us to make them to post round drink site when McAlister goes in. Lusky's/Ryan's gave a certificate and two very nice bags. Luskey’s has been part of Lubbock for a long time. In fact, they’ve been around for generations. If you need jeans, shirts, etc. visit the store at 5034 Frankford and ask for Keggan. The Cactus Theater gave certificates. Lubbock is known for great entertainment. At the Depot District is a place that showcases the local (and not so local) entertainers. The Cactus Theater is a long-time contributor to Lubbock disc golf. The shows that the Cactus presents are excellent. Make it a point to attend. Caprock Cafe is also a long term contributor to disc golf. They gave assorted certificates. They're located at 34th and Indiana ish. Carrino's, once again, a long-term sponsor, is giving dester certificates to all players. Lubbock's brewery is back! Triple J's is giving certficates. They are one of the closest places to the course....probably too convenient. Marks, the brewer, is a DG player. JJ (remember his mom is bringing burritos) is an employee. Then there are many regulars that 'hoist a few' at Triple J. Sipapu Resort is giving a few free nights of lodging. Bill and Sue Leslie are bringing $50 cash from the Sipa DGC and $75-$100 merchandise from Two Grey Hares DGC. Jerlad Locke gave a Blockbuster certificate. Many have donated discs, hats, mini's, towels, etc. for CTP's and Ring of Fire. There will be more donations coming in by game time. I've heard of several of our regional friends will be supporting. Thanks, thanks, thanks! I will make sure that all sponsors get their due recognition.

Okay. Back to preparation. The city mowed everything yesterday so from that point the park is very nice. The course is officailly trimmed and once again, for about three consecutive events, I feel that it is in the best shape EVER. So, don't miss this Cotton Pickin' experience. Marcace is again markacing OB. Larry is taking care of all kinds of things. Chris is to work on some log placements, trash barrel placements, and some debris removal. Vicente and Gordocente moved baskets to round 1 postitions. They WILL need some help to move a few baskets between round 1 and 2 and then between 2 and 3. We still need to get trash picked up around the course (everyone please just spend a few minutes on each hole doing so). All pads need to be swept off well...? Would like new pole decals inside of chains on baskets...? Ribbon, etc needs to be pulled off from all of the baskets. We need five baskets for the event (bring 'em if you gottem). We need several big water jugs (bring 'em full if you gottem, let me know, I'm bringin two, FYI great sale on them at Academy, also bring a bucket to place them on). Jeremy is to handle filling water containers before all rounds. I will be working on assorted signage, rules, cards, F9 cards, Playoff cards, more signage, scoring, payout, extra holes, media, etc. Thanks in advance to all of those who are stepping up to help out!!!! Locals, can you think of anything else?

I sure wish you could have made it Jerry  Why? But, thanks for the confidence. I sure was hoping that you would be here to help me through a few things.

We played doubles today. Weather was perfect....just a little wind and perfect temp. The course was beautifult. Marcace and Sherri ran the doubles event...thanks. I never completely saw the results as I had 'a few' other things going on. I believe that Marcum Reed and Jerry Harrison from Albuquerque won the Pro division. I heard that a cripple and Matt Ryan won the Am division with the same score...yeehaw! :D Long drive was postponed by Albert until after Round 2.

Would have loved to help out.... :(. October is a super busy month for my wife....I am often home with the kids while she does school stuff. Its just a really hard month for me to do a 2-day tourney. Maybe next year (cross fingers) for Big Arms or Cotton Pickin' (or both), I can help you guys with scoring, on-line results, etc. Or, can show you guys how to do it yourselves?

Hope the weather didnt get you guys too bad.

What a looooooong past month, week, several days. Jerry, I always say that family is first...this disc golf stuff gets in the way too much sometimes. I just posted the scores, reviewed them, and will do a few revisions (memb number not yet in, course misc) soon.

We had the perfect Friday weather, then it was mostly just wet and drizzly on Sat and Sun. During the rounds it never really rained hard. Towels were a valable item throught the two days however. For the most part our landing strip concrete pads (pro and rec on 21 holes) held up well. I got to ride out and check out the players on occasion. One time I saw James Paulk on pro 4 pad attempt a backhand roller. Well, he didn't tell us that he literally meant a full boddy roller. He released the disc, slipped a little, went down and rolled about three times (pretty easy for him :D), popped up and was ready again. One of the newer players from Clovis brought two discs and one pair of long shaggy pants to play the entire weekend on a long, wet course, with lots of OB...yep, he DNFed. Really the only two times the rain hit hard was Sun morning during a warm-up ring-of-fire. I had to just cut it short (DG sponsor gifts will be returned or will be used for prizes at upcoming local events...I'll contact and see what they want me to do). The other rain downpour was during the final nine of the top two open (Bo and Gordo) and the top two pro masters (Jerry Harrison from Albuq and Marcus). I had a 'safari' but fair layout. We got about halfway through and the rain hit. There were rivers everywhere. It was actually kind of interesting in that if a disc did not lay in a good location, it very easily could be washed away into the Brazos. It made the four final niners think a little differently on a few holes. With two holes left of the entire tourney.....the sun comes out .

A few thoughts...Bill and Sue Leslie came all the way from Sipapu (Vadito) to play. They represented the eldest players and one of three married couples (Danny and Regina, David and Becca). They also brought quite a bit of cash and merchandise to That Cotton Pickin'. THANKS. Zackery Logan was the youngest player...played in Rec. Thanks to all of the sponsors that supported the event. I especially want to thank the DG related sponsors such as Bill and Sue (Sipa, Sipapu, Two Grey Hares...everyone MUST play up there to understand a whole new DG world). It was great to see Greg Brooks show up on Sun. With him, he carried two of his GREAT DG necklaces that I gave to the two final nine winners. I won one a few years ago in Big Spring (it is one of my best DG prizes I've ever won...yes I was wearing it this weekend). Matt Smart brought those very hot looking DisCrazy discs. Matt even helped me with the scoring. Supporting our regional events by sponsorship, posting event information, and by sending players makes all of our events that much better. THANKS!

And then there are the volunteers. Basically, the Windriders stepped up and made this a pretty smooth tourney. Larry did a lot of the course prep, etc. Chris and Rusty moved a bunch of the logs and trash barrels to the correct locations. Rob did the payout and finances. He very much saved me on Saturday night. That side of things is the area that I was somewhat unfamiar with or at least uncomfortable with. We got things in place and had another great payout. Vicente is the Energizer. For years, he has been moving baskets. He and Gordo moved baskets to the round 1 locations a week prior, and then moved about 7-9 baskets after each round. We really need to let V to retire from this sometime. Sherri helped with registration. Matt was all over with registration, putting baskets out, and cleanup. Shoot, along those lines, I was finishing up scoring misc, look up and James Paulk is sweeping the outdoor center (he, along with Rock and Tammy are actually Windrider members). Several helped with scoring including Gordo and Bo. Jeremy and JJ got water out to the very long and grueling course. JJ's mom, Emma, is becoming a regular at the events. She had breakfast burritos for us each morning. Then for lunch she had enchiladas and nachos. On top of that I caught her cleaning up between rounds while everyone was gone. She also was my monitor of all of the equipment/discs in the outdoor center. Zach helped get CTB's up/down and baskets lined up. Pretty much if he could drive one of the donated golf carts, he would do anything. Then there were others that helped including Albert (also a sponsor via Carino's), Derik, etc. I'm sure there wer others (please forgive me if I missed you). THANKS! Good events just take a little help from everyone.

Other thoughts...It was nice to have some women playing. I wish that we really could get more though. I believe that this was Becca's first tourney. Becca, her husband, David, and friend, Jonathan drove from Arlington to play hear in Lubbock. I got a note that his friends were jealous of payout and how good the course was. Zach played witht the rec players and did well. Clovis sent a bunch of players...I think something like six. Matt Quick, wanted to play rec, I insisted that he play int...he won int and was very happy with his first win. They had a five man card that was a little slow on the course, but had one of the better times. One of the better wins was by Vicente. He just seems to always stay clean and safe in the fairway and hits his putts. Chris Lee had a very hot round three (check out the rating). Andy floats in from either Alaska, Houston, or Abilene and takes first in advanced by ten...maybe the biggest 'bagger' of the tourney :o. Regina took advanced women by one. Sherri gave a super run for it with a blistering 74 on the long/long/long layout in round three. It goes to show that every shot counts soooo much. Bo is playing very hot these days. He had the best score in the division in each of the rounds and final nine. We used the A/B/C holes in round 1 and 2 on Saturday. That meant 48 holes played on Sat. Then on Sun we played the regular 21 format in long/long/long (ie triple postions on each hole). We have now have three postions on hole 2 that are very long (from pro - 983, 1100, and 1150). The longest two are across a street. One is tucked into some trees while the other is on a mound exposed to the wind. Also, we utilized an old original course location (long term Mackenzie plaers will remember the old over the pool shot). Well, the pool is gone due to the amphitheater installation and archeological dig, but one of the original positions was actually used along with two new locations. The pro tee off for 'hole 7' was from on the concrete just west of the bridge (rec was a little up the hill). I reviewed the scores on A/B/C, on hole 2 new longs, and on the pool shot. There was very, very good variability within the divisions. Time will tell the variablity of a player throwing the holes. There were several pro tee fours on hole 2 short and middle. The best score on the longest location was a five. Jerry Harrison had probably the best chance at a four. He had three booming drives, the last of which only needed to be an inch higher to make it across the road. I saw four different shots used on one card at hole seven (cool). There were a few left postion two's. There were no long postion or right postion two's. Who will be the first (maybe we should put a bounty on it)....Better idea - I will give a certificate to the first person playing in a weekly mini, when they get a two on either of the two right holes from the pro pad. I think Sherri was actually one of the biggest winners of That Cotton Pickin'. In addition to having that great run in her division, she ended up with a load of certificates and cash. We had the ring of fire going, a bunch of players, many discs flying, I have about $100 in certificates to a couple of local restaurants, 1-2-3 throw, planned on giving one cert to each player, Sheri is the ONLY one to hit her putt, I guess she's buying.... :Dafter our Thursday mini (hint). No aces were hit throught the three rounds, contrary to the rumers that spread in round 3. So we did a CTB at the outdoor center. The basket was about 150' away, Marcus goes first - about 15", I'm soon after at about 17", Larry was about 15", Andy in the vicinity, and so on....then Sherri - 10"....she takes the ace cash also! I'm sure there are many other stories out there...I hope everyone had FUN.

Wow I'm wordy. I'll update the scores soon. I need to wait on a PDGA number to come in. Placings and round scores should be correct. I thought the final nine would be in correctly. Ratings will also change...mostly for the rec tee players and some for the pro tee players. Prior to tourney, I tested all of this stuff and it worked properly. Work focus for a few days. I can't wait to go out an try out the new holes, well with a basket in place.

I want to thank all of you who contributed to The Cotton Pickin Tourney! I havent played in Lubbock in a long time and it is so much different than i remember. Its a beautiful course. Lots of variety and a good degree of difficulty. I loved it!!! I played the worst that i have played in a long time but i still have a lot of fun playing with Bo and Gordo. Patrick you did a great job on the tournament. I wish more people would have came. They missed out.
