Alright all you elevation freaks....
Introducing: TIMBERIDGE SKI RESORT (http://www.timberridgeski.com/images/stories/Site_Pages/trailmap.jpg)

People calling for another "Kensington Tobbogan" like course, your prayers are answered. Larry LaBond and the crew have installed the first new course for the 2008 Pro/Am Disc Golf Worlds in Gobles, MI (about a 20 minute drive from Kzoo, 40 minutes from Grand Rapids) on the TimberRidge Ski Hill!!!!
We installed the final baskets yesterday and got a round in...wow. Super elevation and great use of the property.
We are still rolling out the footages and planning pars.

The course is NOT YET OPEN TO THE PUBLIC .

Once we get all the permissions together, we will post the pay-for-play info and times the course will be open.

If you love the sweet elevations of Flip City, Kensington Tobbogan, Hickory Hills, and Avalanche...you're going to love the new Worlds Course.

Stay tuned to this forum for pars, maps, times, & $$$'s.

If pars are not laid out, what score did you shoot?

thetruthxl

You are going to soil yourselves when you get to this course!!! When you walk around the pro shop (skis & discs!!!) you can see the trails carved out of the woods and you immediately lock onto 5 or 6 baskets. Some are in the open, some are tucked next to tree lines or the Rivlets that hold the ski lifts up.

What a super challenging course! Major distance and tilt-control is a must. I dont think there is one pin on flat ground...wait, one or two, but you have just a couple of feet before massive drop offs.

We're talking about 5-6 holes through sweet woods and the rest out in the open working up, down, and across the ski slopes!!!

There are ob's and mando's to play. The out of bounds are made by the staff at TR, the mando's aren't silly little ones like pitch and putt courses that ran out of room (or challenges like Old Farm in GR)...the mando's are like very large clowns mouths...triple mando: rivlet 2 to rivlet 3 to the ski lift wire.

I would say the average distance per hole is about 450' with the shortest coming up at about 275 (and a tough 3 to boot) to...it's hard to say, but I feel the longest is an uphill about 600+'.

Don't worry, there are several downhill launches, but none from top to bottom considering the lodge is at the base of the hill and Larry said he almost hit the place with a little fling-er-do.

After talking about it, a few of us thought par to be somewhere from a 56-62 depending on final approval. A true championship course that will bring tobbogan fans to our side.

Like I said in the original post: The Course at TimberRidge is not open to the public yet!!!

We will post when it does and probably throw a party at the place.

One easter egg for you, it was hinted that the Solsun Memorial might be ressurected and moved to Gobles!
What a night round that would make!!! It's out in the middle of nowhere. No city lights will fall upon the hill, but on the other hand, practically the whole course can be illuminated by the lights on the rivlets!

I shot alot over par...whatever that is going to be. A solid score will shoot hi to mid singles and course records will be set at par.
Hole in one opportunities...um, I'll get back with you on that one. :D

Hi, Mark -

Glad folks will be able to enjoy a sweet new course for a while before your Worlds. This course will make it even harder to drive across the state in a day. Too many mando stops at sweet courses!

I'm looking forward to offering folks a look at this course on my show. I'm not sure how soon I'll get there, but if you want to make it happen sooner, you can get some footage together (or find a guy on the tourney team who wants to get involved). I can do the editing if needed.

How's things at your local station?

This course is definitely sweet. I played it once and can't wait to get back. I am not sure about the camping at TR but there is a camp ground a few miles away.

I think tentatively it will be open May 5th ish not definite.

There will be a Basket K-Aces league out there Monday nights.

I think par has been agreed apon Pro 62 Am 74

Having some experience with ski hill and hilly courses, I'd like to suggest a different hole sequence to make the climbing psychologically feel less daunting for players. Because disc golf plays so fast relative to ball golf, double 9-hole loops are overrated as a design feature unless it works with the way the property is laid out. I'd like to suggest that playing holes 1-6 then 11-17, 7-10 then 18 would be a more pleasant routing for players. None of the hole designs need to be changed but hole 7 could maybe be shifted back as desired if that made the transition between 17 & 8 a little better. Looks like a nice addition to your area courses regardless. Have fun!

Chuck,
This is a quicky map that's not too incredibly accurate (not to say kevin did a poor job).
The walk times between holes is very, very short. I didn't feel as if we were hiking to the next teebox.
We'll get a sat photo out for everyone shortly, then you'll see. :D

How are things in the Northwoods, Chuck? Tell John I said Hi!

ck34
Apr 28 2006, 01:53 PM
It's not the walking between holes I was refering to but the traversing completely up and down twice that can be reduced with the different routing.

Having played the course the only strenuous parts are tee to pin hole 8 and tee to pin hole 15. Other than that Timber Ridge only has ~300 ft vertical so there is not a real fatigue factor. Hole 11 has incline on the second throw but it is basically down hill from there (except 15).

Edited because I went to Bell's for lunch.

It works with the way the property is laid out because you can stop for beer, another disc, bathroom, defibrillator, etc. at the lodge between the front and back.

ck34
Apr 28 2006, 05:18 PM
If it's going to be a pay for play facility, then the owners might be interested in what will generate the most revenue. Dual 9 loops works well for generating income from those willing to come and play by providing a stop in the middle. On the other hand, in the case of the Campgaw ski hill course in NJ, many will not come back except possibly tournaments because the three ascents are too much. I believe they might have changed the hole sequence this year to address this. So, it's a balancing act to make sure the perceived (not actual) brutality is minimized to encourage the less diehard players to return.

Toboggan is the best workout I've ever gotten on a disc golf course -- 2 rounds and I'm down for some couch potatoing -- can't wait to play the new course, we are so lucky here in MI to have all these awesome courses. Someone ought to put together a "discgolfpac vacation" for our less fortunate discers in other states -- 5 days, ten courses, plus there's plenty of other things to do.

The initial thought was to have a season pass, I think it was $40 ( which is about the same as local county parks).

Great thing is that they were talking about being able to redeem your golf pass for a free ski pass or something like a discount on a skiing season pass.

They operators are very excited to include disc golf to their property!

Remember, nothing's finalized until the end. These are all speculation.

Here's a nugget for you elevation freaks...

TimberRidge opens to the public May 5th. They will be open select days of the week. Currently, Fridays through Mondays and a league forming on Monday nights.

I'll dish the scoop as more info comes...

KDiscin
May 02 2006, 08:54 AM
It's Official :) :) :D :Applause: Applause:

Sorry Stubby beat you to it. I can' t wait till Friday

From LL #6903:

Timber ridge is opening May 5th. they will be open Fri-Mon, with Monday
League starting on May 22nd. The cost for playing at Timber Ridge is $8/day and
$40/season. This is per person. They have 18 baskets and 2 practice baskets.
Discs will be for sale as well as food and beer at the lodge. The course is
set up as 2 nines. This way you can break at the lodge after 9.

The course itself is big and with the elevation, you can throw big. The pro
par is 63 and the am par is 74. The course makes use of the ski slopes and
takes advantage of the downhill shots with 4 big ones. There are also some
great pin positions that will challenge your putting game (don't go long!). The
course design takes the gradual way up the slope, but it is still a work out.

If this course is successful at Timber Ridge they would be willing to expand
the 2 - 9's into 2 - 18's. We have only touched the surface of the property
they have. Please come out and support this new course at a great location for
disc golf. Timber Ridge is West on D Ave off of 131 North of Kalamazoo.
Less the 10 minutes from the highway and 1/2 hour South of Grand Rapids.

The Monday league will be a K'Aces league. If you have joined the Thursday
league at Cold Brook, then you don't need to pay a membership to play on
Monday. The league will work basically the same at Timber Ridge as it does at Cold
Brook. More details will come.

Please come out this weekend and see the newest course for the 2008 PDGA Pro
and Amateur World Championships!!!

27 people came out, got season passes and had alot of fun!!!

4:20 doubles is on today!!

What a beautiful course. This is what championship golf should be. It's so rewarding to shoot a par or have a chance for a birdie out there! You feel like a serious golfer.

BTW, the bar is open at TR and they have a giant big screen, so make plans for the whole day!

May 06 2006, 03:18 PM
Sounds sweet!

I'll be thinking of Michigan while I'm playing my last few rounds at the Canyon before it gets too hot and overgrown

Just curious on the pro/am pars. Are there multiple sets of tees? I'm guessing the pro par corresponds to a gold/blue skill level. Does the am par correspond to white, red, or white/red?

Hope I'll have the chance to make it up for the K-Zoo worlds. I love Coldbrook park, especially listening to those that cry about how it's too tight.

Congrats to the K-Aces!

thetruthxl
May 06 2006, 04:10 PM
There's only one set of tees right now. There has been talk of multiple tees, but the pars are congruent with the boxes and give for the two skill levels.

I'll get KDiscin to put his score card up on the thread since he did such a nice job on the paintshop map!

I'll tell you, after 8 years of playing par 3 courses, it's nice to work for a birdie 4! Personally, it's more rewarding to have more true to life pars than the "everything is three" philosophy, right monster hole players!?!

denny1210
May 06 2006, 08:23 PM
Right! The monster hole is a par 5.

If it looks like a par 5, plays like a par 5, and scores like a par 5, then it must be a par 5. I know I'm excited when I get a 4 on it!

We're talking almost 2 MILES of disc golf. I've got some advice for those playing the TimberRidge Course...

1. Bring a light load of discs.
You'll want to blast alot of discs off the ski
runs, but remember, that alot of weight to tote
around. Plus, from 700 feet, the left side of the
fairway to the right seems like a mile!

2. Bring plenty of water.
They have beer to purchase in the lodge. Take a
break between 9's. Take some H20 up the hills.

3. Use one of their Ski Poles.
Ask anyone that has played the course. If they
didn't grab one at the bottom, you better believe
they found one at the top! Just bring them back.

Most importantly, have fun!!! The owners are very excited about us being there. If it shows enough interest, we might be able to convince them for another 18 holes on the property. Lets show the course and the operators all the respect they deserve.

Are the 420 Doubles on for Saturday? I would like to play...looks to be some nice weather!!!

first off- the sasquatch open is now on my summer event calendar... hope to make it there once or twice before the event too...

also- my wife's from cadillac and knows the caber fae ski area owner, perhaps the timber ridge model could help us (not really me so much but the northern local doods) get a course in up there... did the club or TR buy the baskets? I assume most of the grunt work was volunteer ... ? does TR have employees there anyway or is it solely for the golf ? obviously TR has more people closer to it...

sounds like a great match of seasonal land usage, ski areas and golf courses are my favorite places anyway- sure to be a memorable facility for the worlds crowd and a deluxe addition to the local scene- look forward to playin it sometime soon

I'll go burn some sage to "cleanse" the hole from the stigmata of that evil number. As hard as we work to disenfranchise our sport from that image, we will forever be known as "that" for the majority of the ignorant public....mind you, who will never step onto a disc course in the first place.

BTW, most holes carding 420' that I have played are not the type of holes one would want to 420 on. Most 420' holes are in open air and plain view to most. IMO.

Thanks to you, I was able to save a few bucks by presenting my PDGA card when I played the course recently. (The savings were immediately converted into Oberon futures on the sun-drenched deck. A win-win!)

Great course! Sorry I missed the inaugural tournament.

I have taken the liberty to negotiate on behalf of the PDGA membership. I was able to work with the fine proprietors of Timber Ridge on a discount exclusive to current PDGA members.

Camping's mando, I think. I'll be there, but I'll be sour about the $65 entry. But the big news is Jeff Kuehle winning Am Worlds by 5 strokes right now. OH YEA!!

Man if Bell's distilled some whiskey too then I'd be in for sure, but sadly I will be passing up this event.

LLabor DDay DDoubles at TR!

We are trying hard to get TR to open up for Monday, Sept3, Labor Day.
Currently, the website says "closed" for monday, but by the Power of Grayskull...I want to play it.
We should all call and ask if they can open!!!!!

1.800.285.6525 ext 2 for disc golf

The more interest we have...the more likely they'll let us play...on a day most people would be able to come out, play all day, eat some brats, drink some beers and have fun!!!!!!

Please call.
