Hey all~

I just wanted to post a note about upcoming plans for a weekly disc golf clinic DEVOTED SOLELY TO THE LADIES. Mandy and I still need to work out the details, and RADL has committed to lending support where it makes sense to do so. We’ll likely meet one night a week after work, starting sometime in April, and will keep it going as long as we have enough interest. By providing opportunities to play with and learn from experienced disc golfers, we hope to introduce more women to the sport as well as retain those that already play. A secondary goal is to increase the number of women competing at local and regional events.

What we need help with:
1. If you know any women that might be interested in learning the game, improving their skills, or want to play with other chick golfers on a regular basis, please send me their names and contact information, or have them email me.

2. We want to "spread the word" about the Women's Clinic to as many ladies as possible. As a recent transplant to the area, my knowledge of the best places to target is limited. If you know of an ideal place to hang a flyer, post an ad, etc., please let me know.

3. We plan to offer loaner discs each week to new players. Please let me know if you feel like donating any new or used plastic to the cause.

My email: terrycfrank@yahoo.com. Also, feel free to send me ideas, suggestions, comments, etc. Thanks.

Cheers~

Terry

I got some plastic for you Terry.

Good luck with this venture...I hope it grows in our area. We need more women on the courses. Kentwood and Cedar are both crawling with recreational female players, so flyers there would probably prove to be beneficial, and maybe at NC State and Meredith College, as well as St. Mary's.

The solution is really quite simple. Just give Bumps the recruiting director role and the next thing you know.....you'll have a full league.

He's like a magnet.

Sometimes I go to kentwood for a quick round at lunch. I see many women players. Terry, I'll get some flyers from you at poker one night to pass out. Hope this is a huge success.

I will also donate some new plastic that I have left over. I need contact information on where to send it to though.

Sounds like a great idea that has had much success in other parts of the country.

St. Mary's is a high school with a bunch of stuck up girls, I doubt many would be interested.

Thats why you send TTrim in to take care of recruiting.

Not that it's a news flash, but NC disc golfers officially ROCK!

Thanks to all of you for the response we've had so far, both to my first posting here and to the emails sent directly to me. I am pysched to report that I have received emails from dozens of women expressing interest!!!! I'm also happy to announce that Innova has offered to donate free plastic to any lady that just shows up. So please tell your wives, daughters, girlfriends, neighbors, etc. that they get free stuff just for trying it.

WE START WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12, 6:00 PM AT CEDAR HILLS. Flyer and more info will be posted on www.radl.biz (http://www.radl.biz) soon. We have also created an email account just for the cause: rawdgg@yahoo.com

Now it's time to call your collective bluffs. Several of you have offered to donate the following: (1) posting flyers at spots where potential lady golfers might see them; (2) donate plastic for our "loaner" collection, or (3) provide free instruction if the need becomes available. If you were serious, in response to the above, please contact me or Mandi asap at the rawdgg@yahoo.com address with more detailed information:

(1) If you'll post flyers, tell us how many and we'll mail/ deliver them to you.

(2) If would be great if you could deliver the discs to us, but we'll will pick up your plastic if you tell us where to go. Shoot us an email at our new "rawdgg" address to work out the details. If you live out of the Raleigh area, email us and we'll give you an address to ship them. I will personally reimburse you for the postage.

(3) Given the overwhelming initial response, we may need some help with groups. PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP TO HELP THE FIRST WEEK UNLESS WE ASK YOU. Yes- we got a ton of emails, but we may only have 3 ladies show up. After the first week though, we plan to focus on a specific topic each week, spend about 10-15 minutes instructing, and then play at least 9 holes. IF we see the need and if you are interested in providing instruction on Wednesdays, please send me an email. News flash: This is not a (direct) way to pick up girls, and many of the emails I am getting are from ladies who are intimidated to play with men. Please keep that in mind when you respond. If you KNOW you might be sort of jerk, maybe don't offer to help ....Not that ANY disc golfers are jerks- but we are trying to attract more women to the sport. If you could in any way hinder this effort, then please, for the greater good, refrain from involving yourself... (maybe donate some plastic or hang some flyers.)

That is all. Thanks again. Cheers~

Forgot to mention that all ladies under 18 need to bring a waiver signed by a parent/ guardian with them before they can participate. We should have a downloadable form on www.radl.biz (http://www.radl.biz) soon. Cheers~

STARTS THIS WEEK AT 6:00 AT CEDAR HILLS! Tell your friends, wives, girlfriends, sisters, etc. We'll meet at the pavillion behind the practice basket near hole one (same place as summer doubles). Spread the word- and if you have loaner discs to donate, please contact me or Mandi asap at rawdgg@yahoo.com. We'll find a way to get them from you. Thanks

Hi all - Don't really know where to post this. Searched online for website's or local message boards and keep getting directed to the PDGA. Anyway, I am going to be passing through NC on I 95 and wanted to stop and play a round somewhere. I can either play Zebulon or Englewood Park. It seems Zebulon is probably best from the info I did find, but I couldn't find anything on Englewood Park. Is this course worth going to. My time is very limited. Probably only 2 hours and Zebulon is further off 95, so if Englewood isn't that bad of a course, it would be much easier for me to play it. Does anyone know anything about the course. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Jeannie

Englewood is in Rocky Mount. It is a very short and tight course then opens up for the back nine. It's not a bad course, but there is a much better course right down the road.

Farmington Park is a great course with grass fairways, really pretty creeks and some really cool giant rocks. It is a little tougher than Englewood, but is a much better course.

Zebulon is a better course than both of these, but as you said, the Rocky Mount courses are much closer.

As far as I know the directions to the courses are accurate. Just remember if you do go to Farmington, you litterally drive right past the entrance for Englewood, so don't turn in too early!

Since you only have 2 hours, dont' bother coming to Zebulon. It will take you 30-40 minutes from 95 to get to Zebulon and then rounds out there can take a while especially if you haven't played it before.

Play Farmington. Better course than englewood. I don't know if there are signs pointing to the next tees yet. If not, then hole 5's tee is across the road. Then you play on the other side of the park and then come back to the other side for the last few holes.

Thanks guys! It's looking like Farmington makes sense as of now.( Anyone have the GPS coordinates for it?) I am guessing at the 2 hour thing (depends how the drive down from NY goes) but I am thinking if I have time, I will try to go to Zebulon, if not Farmington. I am thinking I will me getting there Friday around 3 - 3:30ish so maybe I'll have the chance to say hello to some of you I always see on the board. :)

Heard that there was a good turnout for the first week of the Women's league. Do tell...

Apr 13 2006, 05:44 PM
Last night was the first meeting of the Raleigh Area Women's League, and I hope I speak for everyone when I say it was a lot of fun.

We had a good turnout of about 10 women- with a wide variety of skill level. The more experienced women broke off and played a round while the less experienced worked on some fundamentals before playing a couple of holes.

I want to give a big thanks to Steve and MTL for meeting me at the course and donating a HUGE box of discs to use as loaners. THANKS GUYS!

I think this is going to turn out to be exactly what this area needs- women getting together to play. SPREAD THE WORD!

Mandi and I are thrilled with the number of women that came out for RAWDGG's first meeting. In addition to Raleigh residents, we had golfers from Holly Springs, Fayetteville and Cary. Many thanks also to MTL, BS and Yahn for the discs.

The casual format seemed to work this past week, so we'll probably stick to it. That being said, ladies speak up and tell us what you think. We created a yahoo group that includes more infomation (links, calendar, etc.). Everything on the site is open for public viewing, but any ladies that want to receive RAWDGG emails should join by going to:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawdgg/

Also, if anyone has a link they'd like to see added (local clubs, for example), shoot me an email and I'll post it to the yahoo group. We'd love to see more women playing all over NC, not just in Raleigh. Thanks

Hey all-

Just wanted to post our inclement weather policy. Bring your umbrellas and rain gear; we'll be there even in the rain unless its a steady downpour or lightning. Thanks

Just wanted to spread the word that starting THIS week we will be meeting at East Wake Middle from here on out. Mandi will be at Cedar Hills from 6:00- 6:15 to catch any ladies that didn't get the message. For directions, check the PDGA website's course directory or the RAWDGG Yahoo group. I'll also try and get the change posted at the RADL site as well. Please pass the message to anyone that may be interested in attending. Thanks.

Ladies, I hope that you remember the young lady that followed you around at Dogwood on Sunday. Her name is Dawn Geist (Rocky's daughter) She has just started playing and i was so happy she sought to find your group instead of hanging with her Dad and watching JJ.

Well anyway, She played the Kings Cup this weekend and go check out the scores. She played pretty well and won!!

I just wanted to thank you for what your doing for our sport. On top of what your already doing, by just playing you an inspiration.

I did see Dawn at the King's Cup and had a chance to chat w/ her for a few minutes ... she's an awesome kid. Mandi and I were more than impressed when we met her at the Crosstown. She had the moxie to come up and introduce herself to us both- not something I could have done in the 8th grade. She walked all 18 with us ...

Also- a reminder that RAWDGG is meeting Wednesdays at East Wake Middle at 6:00 pm. If you've come to the meetings at Cedar Hills, trust me when I say East Wake is far better for our needs. We have the entire course to ourselves!!!!

Tell all the ladies you know ...

Cheers~

Ladies,
Would you have any interest in possibly getting some prizes to give out? I see Kathy Hardyman of DiscDiva.com just about every weekend, and I am willing to see if she would be able to donate a few things (visors, stickers, etc.) for you to give out as incentive prizes every week. Let me know,

Marsha

Hey Ladies,
I had a chance to talk with Kathy this weekend, and she said if you guys would email her to ask, then she probably wouldn't be able to say no. So, I'd recommend emailing her (discdiva@pcisys.net), let her know what you're doing, and see if they could help in any way. I told her even little prizes to give to the group would be appreciated. In Kathy's words "Mandi's just too sweet to say no to" so there you have it!

I hope your league is continuing to go well!
