Bill Brady on the No Foolin thread announced regarding the DGLO:
We are going back to the 2 day format for the Am's at the DGLO. The Pro's will still play Friday, Saturday, Sunday using a staggered start. The Am's will play two rounds Saturday using shotgun start and one on Sunday. The Am's will play both the Monster and Original courses at the DGLO this year.

So is a full tournament on the am side 4X24, 5X24 or something else?

I think I will be going to Ludington for the AJ Open at the end of May. I want to go to Pillage the Village in South Bend the week after. Then, probably Mt. Pleasant J Bird Open. Did you guys retain that jerky sponsor for NWS?

z Vaughn z
May 10 2006, 10:53 PM
No Jerky this year. I wish Pleva's would supply again..that chicken jerky was AMAZING. Looks like I'll be at Temperence on Saturday, then Robert Morris on Sunday. The rest of may will include stops at Boyne City and Ludington. Seeya then!

Well, I took the plunge and have pre-registered for this. Also reserved 2 nights at the GREAT Ann Arbor University Hotel and Suites. Having stayed there before, I warn to watch out for the buckets of water and the elevator. I nearly died twice in that thing last time I stayed there, and it was only 1 night. But $50 a night isn't too bad, all things considered. It's also only like a 15 minute drive to the course. WOOHOO to my first A-Tier.

take the stairs

Oh, I learned. Both near deaths were on the same trip. I got to the ground floor and only the inside door opened, I rode to the second floor then back to the first, and it opened with only half the car aligned with the floor I was on, then I rode it back to the 2nd floor, got off and took the stairs.

The amateur player cap is 96. And there are 34 signed up online. Anyone know approximately how many have been mailed in? Is that list somewhere? Just wondering because I notice quit a few names missing yet that I would assume would play. And we are definately filling if the cap is 96 so how may spots are left?

In my opinion this is the best A-tier for advanced players in the midwest. They really do a fabulous job with this tournament every year. I wish I could play it, but for the past couple of years it has not worked out on the schedule.

They are up to 35 pre-reged on the am side already so you know they are going to fill. If you want in, you better get in. You can find all the pre-reg info right here:

DSproAVIAR
Jun 06 2006, 01:30 PM
It's really 42 players, minus all the mail-ins. 1 Adv and 1 Adv Woman got a free entry and are not recorded yet. :D:D

I think the Locals were guessing that the layout would be Regular Black, Champion Yellow, and Blues on Sunday. I would say that the 2 certainties are Champ Yellow on Saturday and Blue on Sunday. We figured that A3 didn't want to make Ams play Champ Black.

Does anyone know who "Ryan Macdonald" is? He's not listed as being a current PDGA member and, as this is an A-Tier, somone should contact him to let him know this. It may have just been a keying error or he didn't have his number at the time of registration. I'd hate for the guy to show up only to find out he can't shoot. (Unless, of course, the membership requirement has changed in 06.)

Jun 17 2006, 12:21 AM
well if mills is playing , he told me that hes playin open just like in the memorial, but he still hasnt decided , but my picks to win the d glo are daemon stahlin, mike frame or jon dobberstein, there locals at the mills and all have a good all around game, but most likely its going to be daemon, just because he shoots good from blacks and blues consistenly and can shoot 14 under on the yellows, and no out of towner shoots well on blues for some reason, and on the monster longs, good meaning 8 or better on blues and under on monster longs , so dont screw it up daemon like i did at no foolin this year , well i let u win,

Jun 17 2006, 01:59 PM

We planned to turn off online registration on Wednesday at 6:00pm, but I'll be at Hudson Mills then, so it will not get turned off until after league.

So does this mean you are going groups of 5 on some holes?
If so, then I totally disagree with the added spots. Or are you going to add a hole or two and keep it 4 somes?

No groups of 5 and no extra holes. Rob is going to start two group on a couple holes. I believe Monster Hole 15 is one. Monster Hole 14 plays so slow that having two groups start on 15 should not cause a delay. I do not know which other hole he is thinking of.

Multiple Winners this year:

Name ------ Wins ------ Players

Zachary Vaughn -- 3 -- 78
Robert Tucker -- 3 -- 76
Dan Treece -- 2 -- 55
Jeff Kuehle -- 2 -- 52
Jon Dobberstein -- 2 -- 31

The player stat is the combined number of players that person has beat in as many wins.

These 5 have to be your favorites for DGLO....although it does not appear that Tucker or Treece will be playing.

Hudson Mills doesn't always treat those who have won other places the best. It is good to those who play it 2 or 3 times a week normally.

So I'm going with Daemon, Justin, or Jon to keep the DGLO title locally.

We'll have food and drink beginning about 6 pm. You can come a little earlier if you want to play the course earlier, although there should be lots of daylight still at 6. (Pro tees are off limits this year; focusing on smoothing out the Am experience.)

It is kind of an apples/oranges comparison since more than half of the 80 DGLO "Advanced" players are Intermediates and Recs playing up that don't have a division for their rating. That's something you see anywhere that offers a good tournament but does not offer lower divisions: a lot of players play up. Works for all the actual advanced players!

I'm glad it filled on the am side. It's nice to see that many Michigan and Ohio amateurs coming out for the event. I'll be curious to see how one Grand Rapids player in particular does at the tournament. ;) ;)

Final Round, Lead Card, 2006 DGLO

I'm going to try to write up the final round as it happens and post here every couple of holes. Right now it's 11:26 am and the lead card goes off at 11:45.

Tied for first at 129 are Josh Anthon, Al Schack, and Scott Martin. On that lead card is also Dave Feldberg at 130.

It’s a beautiful, sunny day at Hudson Mills, with only a slight breeze. Schack is eating a banana (lots of fresh fruit on the course) while Feldberg and Anthon are practicing putting on hole 18. Martin, as usual, is off practicing somewhere else.

Hole 1 is one of the holes that has an extended pin placement. (Both pins are left in the ground.) A perfect drive for the regular Monster Black Hole 1 means you can probably get a 3. Threes are hard to come by on this hole. Last year, lefties like Scott Martin could go around an alternate route left of the fairway, but a3disc closed that route this year with a mando close to the tee.

As we wait to start – two minute warning now – the crowd, including gallery and players is about 20 people. The Ams are still out on the Original Course Blue (long) and many of the other Pros are still out on the Monster Black Champion.

The gallery will swell as they finish and join us.

It’s going to be hard to pay attention to the cards behind this one, but I’ll try, as they are within reach.

Martin’s left-handed drive goes into the tunnel into the woods, but to where we don’t know yet.

Anthon goes to about the same place, left in the woods tunnel.

Schack also goes left and hits a tree that knocks his disc way off to the right.

Feldberg gets further down the tunnel but hits a tree and drops in good position for the upshot.

Anthon is just at the mouth of the tunnel on the left side. He’s straddling out to throw a forehand roller that seems to go up to the green for the second pin.

Martin was further left and has a tougher lie, especially for a leftie. His attempt at an anhyzer to go up high and crash to the pin is foiled by a tree 15’ in front of him.

Schack’s forehand roller hits a root and bounces up into the chains of the first basker and then out.

Martin’s third shot: Again, tough for a leftie.

Feldberg leans out with a forehand upshot.

Shack is putting from the close pin, slightly uphill and anhyzer and just misses the chains.

Feldberg’s in the trees about 30’ out with a tough lie. Anhyzer putt, goes over the basket.

Anton’s a little closer and a little more open. But there’s a big tree leaning in front to go around. Straddle putt goes in!

Anthon gets the par, everyone else bogies. (3, 4, 4, 4)

Hole 2 = tight straight shot through trees – you can go straight of anhywer, basket down a decline to the right.

Anthon has a perfect line but it stops short. (This is a must-bird hle for top pros.)

Martin takes the leftie route and skips down near the basket.

Shack anhyzers the same route, hits some leaves, but drifts in to the green.

Feldberg goes straight down the middle and parks it.

Anthon anhyzers a floater to the basket.

Schack has a 30-foot downhill putt and bangs the basker and drops.

Martin cans a downhill 15-footer for his bird, Fedlberg has a shorter down hill putt and cans it also for the bird.

Martin and Fedlberg with birdies and the other two with pars.

Hole 3: long pin. Two drives fail to turn and go into bushes left and short. One hits a tree on the right early. The last drive is just about where it needs to be – by the early pin. (Thatt was Schack.)

Feldberg is taking a hyzer route over the swamp rather than go through the fairway from his lie (aftfer hitting the tree early). It floats up high into the sky, trails down left and apparently parks itself. A beautiful shot but it’ops 40’ dhort. s a tree and d. Missed!

Anthon’s under some bshes abut 40’ from the close pin. He has to throw over it and rutn right to get close for the par on the second pin. Instead he just tosses it out by the first pin to be clear for his third shot.

Schack, who was right by Anthon but a little more open, floats his disc down by the pin.

Anthon’s looong putt hits a tre short. Martin is putting for a bird from about 70’ . . . but misses.

Shcak and Martin with 3; the others with 4.
.
|||

Hole 4

A 90 degree dogleg that’s open for the second lalf of the flight but wooded through a tunnel at first. The pin is on a slippery slope an putting at it downhill can be screy.

Martin’s 40’ high and right. Schack is past to the left 25 feet. Feldberg;’s drive is b Eside Schack’s. Anthon goes inside a smacks a tree, ending up in thicket and about 50-60’ downhill.

Anthon’s approach/putt BANGS IN! Birdie! Martin, downhill 40’ – low and slides 20’ past downhill. Felberg cans it, birdie. As does Schack!

Martinmakes the uphill 20-footer.

By now the gallery has doubled.

Martin 3, everyone else 2.

||||

Hole 5

Stright tunnel shot – one of the easier holes. Pad is slanted uphill which is problematic.

About to catch up with the second card.

S is first. (Aid station there with water and fruit on this hole.) Gets it too high, goes over first trees but flies left and is short. Tough approach.

A goes wide and short. D also, but cloer amd woth a 60-fit uphill putt. Martin goes through the middle, hits a tree but bounces for a 100’ open approach.

A turtle the size of a roasting pan is patolling this green,

Hole 8

Al drives percetly. Maybe 80 feet fro the circle. Anthon is good shape too. Dave a little too left. Scott is left, by the outhouses. In good shape for the approach.

I hear from those following the second card that no one’s hot there, either.

Avery had a late HOT round of -6, 66 on Champ Blacks. Al Schack tore it up through the gauntlet of the 6 Monster letter holes, burning a 3-under.

Local Justin Leopold takes second, shooting a hot 63 on Blues, and jumping from the 2nd card. The highest rated AM at the event, Brent Koontz, took the 3rd place trophy, beating 3 others in a sudden-death trophy playoff, including Jeff Kuehle and locals Jon Dobberstein and Daemon Stahlin.

As much fun as the tournament was itself. The best part of the whole weekend was subway lunch if you know what I mean.

And for those of you who didn't know I thought I'd post a link.
