I think that 58 looks awful hot with a preliminary 1060 rating. I think there are a few par 4s and 5s out there that should be reflected in the par for the course being entered as more than 54 in the online software so the over/under looks reasonable.

Don't you have to be a current member for a NT event? That 58 scores shows up as a non-current member

Mike Schwieger - 2005 Wisconsin Tour Champion showed up last night to play doubles without seeing the course prior. Him and his partner pulled in the big win by shooting a 56 on the newly lengthened 18 hole layout.

Whoop whoop, Wisconsin just keepin' it real, yo.

This time of year, a lot of people renew at or just before events. With the PDGA staff in AZ for the Summit, I'm sure the batch of new membership and renewals that weren't processed this week will make for a big one next week.

Didn't some Am divisions play a few shorter tees on some holes at Fountain? Looks like everyone played the same tees based on the unofficial ratings.

ck34
Mar 04 2006, 11:25 AM
Larry and Yeti's rounds are still within the normal range even for their ratings. I would expect both rounds to be retained in their stats but it's borderline.

From the unofficial ratings, Ken's round may end up as the highest rated ever for a course with an SSA of 65 or higher. We'll have to do some checking.

ck34
Mar 04 2006, 10:43 PM
I believe those are the two guys whose ratings are based on 2 or 3 rounds, all of which were confirmed rated wrong because the TD didn't report that their division played several holes shorter and with less OB. Their ratings were calculated 20-30pts higher than they should have been. They petitioned the Competition Director and got an exemption because the error couldn't be corrected in time.

As I say every year around USDGC time, there's a problem with course design when the best players in the world shoot 8s, 10s, etc. on a hole.

I don't what's going on with that 12th hole, but when the lead women's card in a National Tour event records scores of 8s and 10s, something is fluky. http://www.panthersplanet.net/style_emoticons/default/thumbsdown.gif

Then those two players get 1st and fifth that was a bad choice to let them play int.

Mar 05 2006, 08:29 PM
A decision should be judged as good or bad not based on the results but whether it was good or bad with the information available when it was made. Their round ratings were determined from erroneous info and the Competition Director made the call.

Hole 12 was just over 1000' par 5, OB was flagged on both sides about 100' wide all the way to the pin. If you tried to throw it as hard as you can it was easy to criss cross OB all the way up the fairway. I heard of someone in every division doing just that, 5 or 6 throws and a couple of OB's adds up quick. Also, the grass was dry and very 'skippy'. On the other hand, I threw it 275' 3X with a little luck with no big skips, an upshot, and a putt for par.

But I do see your point about the best in the world shooting high scores. But something can be said for playing it safe too.

There was alot of talk regarding my rating as well as the other players rating, these ratings were calculated wrong and that is the point, if my rating was only 883 no one would be complaining, so what, I didnt play that good, just better then the others, I made my mistakes and the other players just didnt make a move to catch me. I played safe and it paid off. I have no regrets, and I am glad I won. This was my first Memorial and my first win at this level of event. I practiced hard these past few weeks and changed my throwing approach and putting stlye, which all paid off. Now that I have this win, I will no longer play intermediate. I hope this makes all you whinny babies happy.:mad::mad:

The Memorial was awesome!
This was my first A tier event, and my first sanctioned PDGA event as an Am Master. A HUGE jump from the handful of tournaments that I have played in. I didn't play all that well, but I had a great time. I learned so much from the players I played with, and from the pros I got to hang out with, it was well worth the money it took to get there. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Mucho thanks to the organizers and players!!! I had a blast, and can't wait to get down there again next year.
PS. I second the post that mentioned getting some port-a-potties at the Fountain Course! One of our group in the last round had to run to a coffee shop near the course to releive himself on hole #11). If our group wasn't as cool as it was, he would have been one miserable puppy for the rest of the round.

Before Keith gets back on here, looks like he was right. I talked with Brian Donahue waiting near the tee after he took an hour to play just the first three holes in Climo's group. They had a four group backup on the 1000' hole #4 with two mandos. Looks like they'll need the flashlights for the old guys teeing off now.

Don't ever doubt Keith.....unless he is telling you he is going to take my dollar in a sidebet.

More pink flags and less yellow flags on that yellow grass would be welcome!

Actually, I could see the yellow flags well enough to throw on the wrong side of them. :) Can't really blame my failure to not go OB on that, although I'll still try. Between that and Keith caddying for me, I never had a chance at Vista. :D

Agree with all that. Everything was great except for the bathrooms at the Fountain.

The mega-OB and added length at Vista was very fair, even though I didn't play it well. The Fountain was pretty flukey with something like 15 of 18 baskets right next to the water or the street. I only had one bad break, but it turned a wash-out for three into a six so that seemed a little overly punitive. But then again I could've made that 20 foot putt and all would be well. All my other OB strokes were of my own demise, so it wasn't too bad.

Thanks to all the volunteers and everybody that helped out leading up to the event. It went very smooth for my flight and there really isn't anything I can complain about except my own inconsistency. :) And Keith bringing me the "luck of the sixes" in three out of four holes. :D

Id have to agree....My 68 in the 1st round sure DIDNT feel like a 1003...more like a 970 or so.....

BUT Ill take it :D

Its interesting how the round ratings for the course changed so much between our 1st and 3rd rounds with only MAYBE a 1 1/2 stroke difference in difficulty, with the changes that were made..............

What a great weekend of disc golf! Even though I lost 4 discs at Fountain (2 each round) I got out of Vista with only 2 OB strokes and no lost plastic. I know a couple of those discs at the Fountain are close enough to get and sure would have liked to get them back.
Where did all the found discs end up, any chance of seeing them again?
I know to fly out Monday next year, sure wish I could have stuck around for the awards, and hit the players party, even though 311 totally rocked the house, as always!!
Everything was great! This was a very well run tournament considering the magnitude of running 400 people a day through 2 courses. And enough time so that there could be some practice rounds at the end of the day! Thank you to AZDGC and everyone involved. A great experience that'll keep me coming back!

The only constructive critisism I have is the lack of bathrooms and water at the Fountain course. I have nobody but myself to blame for my own mistakes but for a couple of holes, both rounds, I was focused on where the best place would be to take a leak so that the fewest number of people would see me (don't want a bad mark against disc golfers in the public eye). It didn't help that I was sucking down water (which is a good thing) and had to ration by hole 8 (bad thing). Also, nobody seemed to know which holes were the par 4's at Vista, it wasn't marked anywhere and even the guy that hands me rules and says "On the par 4 and 5 holes throw as soon as the group ahead of you is out of reach." It's no wonder that I did as well as I did and it didn't feel like I was doing too well, I must have been hitting the par 4 holes in 4. And I managed a 5 on the par 5!
What a great way to kick off tournament season!
If anyone is wanting to travel we have some great couses and tourneys here in CO. check out www.coloradodisc.com (http://www.coloradodisc.com) for our schedule and sign ups.

I would love to check out discgolftv.com ... but none of the movies work for me. I reinstalled Windowz Movie Player software, still no go. I also have Flip4Mac and it won't play the movies either.
I know Apple computers are not as popular as windowz computers ... but jeez, with windowz movie player and Flip4Mac, I should be able to view the files. I get an invaled URL error.

Only one of the links works as of right now. They're working on the others so it may NOT be your 'puter. I'm able to view on Windows XP.

Nothing on discgolftv.com works for me. Tried Safari, Firefox and IE browsers. Reinstalled Windowz Movie Player. Tried Flip4Mac ... no go. Bummer.
I email discgolftv about it, hope they can help me figure out how to do it. I would love to see the footage.

I'm on Windows 98 SE and one link works. Just click the link, wait, then click the play button and wait again. It started in about 15-20 seconds for me.

Nice job Timmy! Can't wait to see more. I hope Am Nat's will be covered later in the year. I don't think most Am's realize what a great course they're missing out on by not coming.

Great vids keep up the good work!

For some reason I was only able to view the movies after locating a direct link to them. You have to look at the frame source of the movie player to get that. Here's links for what they currently have playing:

Man, playing in Phoenix was a blast, and a spoiler. It's been raining, and now snowing since I got back to Colorado ... 2 inches of fresh snow since last night, and it's still coming down.
Waaaaahhhhhh! I want some of that sunny weather and green grass! :p

Amazing week in AZ. thank you sooo much ADGC and to anyone involved in the events organization/volunteering. I always look so forward to getting out of the cold northeast to start the new disc golf season off in sunny style. So sweet that Fountain was in play again...one of my favorite courses-so beautiful! Hope some of you southwest golfers can make it to the Skylands Classic in Warwick,NY in July.

Unofficially, it appears the qualifiers are:

Avery Jenkins
Micah Dorius
Cale Leiviska
Robert McIntee
Ben Botte

Schultz (former champ), Sprague (top 20 last year), Anthon (top 20 last year), Feldberg (current champ), Climo (former champ), Rico (top 20 last year), and Doss (world champ) are exempt from qualifying this year.

Check USDGC (http://www.usdgc.com) for official information. Qualifiers must now come from the Open division only, according to the 2006 qualifying guidelines that can be found here. (http://www.usdgc.com/pdf/2006_USDGC_Qualifying.pdf)

Again, I refer you to the post I made above. Officially, the qualifying list can only come out of the USDGC headquarters, but unofficially it appears that players that play in the Masters division cannot qualify for the USDGC that way. They must play Open in order to qualify. This is a departure from past procedure. Again, here is that link:

2006 USDGC Qualifying Procedures (http://www.usdgc.com/pdf/2006_USDGC_Qualifying.pdf)

I refer you to section 1 for more details. The other interesting thing is that they are no longer carrying all ties in as qualifiers. They are breaking the tie by the highest PDGA rating.

I have to agree, Thank to you all for a fine event. The greatest I have attended! Thanks to Dukes bar and grill for hosting the festivities and serving all the Fat Tire and Sunshine one could ever want. Dan Ginnelly and staff for a professionally run event.

It was the first time in the southwest part of the country.

This is one tournament I will never miss again.

P.S. Lesli, yes, the HUGE bruise my arm is healing nicely. j/k :p

Wow, really? Master's cannot qualify unless they play open? Well I'll let Robert know that, but will they list names as people qualify because I know candidates only have a limited amount of time send their $$ in?

Any Pro division is open to qualify for the USDGC so long as that Pro division plays the same course layouts as the Open Men for the tournament.
I am pretty sure the Open Men, Masters and Open Women played the same layouts. That being true, here are your USDGC qualifiers for The Memorial:
Avery Jenkins
Harold Hampton
Micah Dorius
Jim Oates
Cale Leiviska

Great tournament by the way. Had way too much fun :D

Looks like it's up to the TD to make the call whether the other divisions have played the same course at the same time as Open in order to potentially qualify. In theory, players in all pro divisions that played the same layout as Open should be able to qualify with a good enough score. On the other hand, a case could be made that with tee times, they played under different conditions. It's the same reason we're considering breaking up the pro and am divisions into groups of two or three time segments each day to do the ratings to account for differences in wind during each segment. However, I don't expect Dano will see it that way.

I use both discs in my arsenal...I need something different.
Missed ya Kenny, you would of loved the layout. Plays for the big arm /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We all got off lucky last week. Right now it's 40 degrees and the forcast is for SNOW in PHX. later today. It already has snowed at the upper elevations, (like Fountain Hills), around the valley. We received about a 1/2" of rain already. Yesterday the wind was about 35mph to 50mph. #$*&$!

143 days of rain is no more :D:D

Just in case anyone else is still wondering if they might find a disc lost at the '05 Memorial. I downloaded the recently updated excel Lost and Found spreadsheet and found one of the discs I lost (more still missing ... but I'm hopeful). The Lost and Found doc is located on Spinners Home Page (http://www.sogdiscgolf.com/)
