View Full Version : Windy Day
I saw the highlights of Da Bears game and the wind was doing things to the football I've never seen before. Anyone go out and try to throw a disc today? I played a tournament in Crystal Lake a few years ago where the winds might've been about the same as today. Anyone remember that?

Back in 2002, there seemed to be similarly strong winds EVERY Sunday at leagues (Bevier and Fairfield). Come for a visit toward the end of April, but bring your max weights.....

Yeah. We played OxBow for the Turkey Shoot-out. You think that course was tough in normal weather? Wow. On 18 I tried to throw my Wildcat (much more understable than the usual shot selection) and it was carried away left and high each time! While my group and I were playing #12 a tree got snapped off about 10' up and fell about 20' behind the basket. Fun stuff!

Scott Tomk. won Adv. AGAIN w/ a -3. He will be Open Master next year. Shack ran away with Open. I don't know totals, but he shot a -7 first round and both he and Scott beat their fields by 7 strokes.
The Rifleman won Crystal that year by atleast 15 strokes. There was a Masters player that scored a 27 on one hole! Took him an hour and a half to play it. The hole was about 340 feet, wide open, and straight into a 50 mph wind. The problem was when the disc would land, the wind would pick it up and roll it backwards. It was unbelievable. At one point he ended up 400 feet behind the teepad. It would've gone further back but a fence saved it. He'd throw about 3 or 4 shots to get back to the teepad, then have it roll back to the fence. This went on for about 90 minutes. I'm glad I was in the group in front of him. The back up on that hole just kept growing and growing. Once the round was over, they cancelled the rest of tournament, except for open! The 2nd round only got worse. I took a 15 on one hole, and a couple 8's and 9's, maybe worse. Alex Bingman shot 4 over that round. That guy knows how to play.

We played leagues Sunday morning just miles off Lake Michigan in Waukegan. Gusts were 25 to 40mph. It was a fun day .

It sounds like you all have to deal with the kind of wind that we do here in Oklahoma. In the spring, a steady 25mph with gusts is common. Its fairly windy all of the time here in Tulsa, and the farther west you go, it can get worse. Kansas can stir up a pretty healthy breeze as well. I have played in and near Wichita and been flogged by the wind and some Jayhawks. The strongest winds I have played in were 45mph with gusts to 60 in Tulsa. Needless to say it was brutal and my score, well lets just say it was well over par. What is funny is that in those kinds of winds, an 10 foot putt isnt always a gimme. Peacefrog and Donovan

Those are a blast. In tha fall of 2004 I saw a guy putt from 10ft away, hit dead center, blew out & rolled forever. That is always funny! We get our fair share of windy days here off Lake Michigan but i'm not sure how it compares to Oklahoma.

Tendick Park has almost a constant 25mph wind once you get into the open holes. Gusts can bump it up to 40+ at any given time.
If you are in the area May 6th, the OZaukee DGC (http://www.ozdgc.com), is running their first Tournament at the park, you'll be able to see it then. Of Course, we have leagues every Saturday at 10am as well (Shameless Plug!!)

It sounds to me like a real pain in the scorecard to play in the wind coming off of Lake Michigan. Tendick Park sounds like it can provide a healthy bogie count also. Oh aint it fun! Peacefrog & Donovan

The only problem with Tendick is the holes are short enough that you can recover fairly easy for the most part. So Bogeys are not as frequent as one would think.

Really if you play smart there are only 1-2 holes where you can get yourself in enough trouble to get a bogey... but then again a lot of holes are so "easy" that you overthink them and bogey those too :)
The long tees however give a player a good challenge, plenty of bogies to be had! However the back 9 is fairly repetetive as far as shot selection goes
