We really need another course bad! I thought Marsh Creek would be done by now?

For the right incentives, some of us Charlotte guys will come up and build it. We are pretty good at course design/construction. For some examples, check out Reedy stout, Sugaw, and Charlotte's Web (par 70 Hornet's Nest). In the near future, you can check out Idlewild Park, and William Davies Park. Might be another one coming too at Mint Hill, making it into an 18 hole course.

Marsh Creek has been talked about for the past 2 years. If I recall correctly Kirk had been showing people where the holes would be a few years ago.
The funny thing is, if someone would have just said....
Marsh Creek workday is at so and so time, I know a lot of people would come out. I know I would. I wouldn't be able to do a lot of heavy lifting, but I would help clear fairways, dig holes, and stuff like that.
I don't even know if the area is still cleared or if it has been overtaken by the vegetation.

That's really all it takes to get people out there to work. We often ask people to volunteer to do a complete hole, and this way you can work at your own pace, whenever you can. Work days are good to get some of the people out to help that will not commit to doing an entire hole. We also acknowledge our supporters, or mules as we refer to in Charlotte, by posting their names on our website, and giving them props at our tourney's. With all of the people that throw discs in the Raleigh area, it doesn't make sense that you cannot get the manpower. Sometimes you just have to sacrifice a round or two for the benefit of future rounds on nice courses. Hope you guys get some support and get the course in.
What is MTL talking about though when he said this couldn't have happened in Charlotte?

i said it wouldn't have happened in Charlotte. Like usual, people interept what I say as negative. My comment was saying that Charlotte is awesome about getting courses put in and work done and that if Marsh Creek park was in Charlotte and was planned like 5 years ago like this park was, the course would already be in the ground.

You are absolutely right MTL. I perceive everything from you as negative. Might take a while for that to change. I need to see consistency! :D
Question: MTL, how many holes did you work on at Marsh Creek? How bout TTrim? EOG? Team Fish?

No one has done anything b/c no one knows anything.
It's really sad and pathetic.
But if you care to question my work ethic please visit the Meadow in Greenville. I was getting poison ivy at that place months before there was even baskets there. Everyone at our tournament loved the course and I am proud to say I was one of the many to get it where it is now.

Ok,
Don't be so negative... :o Marsh Creek and Parks & Rec authorities have been changing the plan every 5 months or so about where they want to put the "more important" facilities. Disc Golf seems to come last in the minds of the parks & rec. Many of the wise course developers in RADL's past have told us what we need to do to get this course in the ground, but no one has done any of those things...
1. Write letters (all of you) to the parks dept, telling them that you have been anxiously awaiting this course and it is very close to your home.
2. Show up at the meetings (all of you) to show them that we are serious about wanting this course in the ground.
3. Repeat above 2 steps...
Come to the RADL meeting to discuss further. Nov. 8th at 7:00pm. Directions are on the website.

Thanks for the vote of confidence MTL. We are fortunate to have the Beav in the mix who is park district general manager. Stan is as relentless in building relationships with the powers that be at Park and Rec as he is tenacious with the chainsaw. It is the work in these areas over the course of years and years that is more fundamental to getting courses in the ground.
As an example, there has been a glimmer of hope to finally make some headway at Wm Davies. It is in an area of town that really needs a course. In preparing for some of the meetings, I have seen 1992 P&R master plan documentation that showed plans to have a DG course there.
So, bottom line, despite the incredible headway we have had made in CLT, things do not usually happen overnight, in 1-2 years, 5 years (like Marsh Creek) or even in 13 years sometimes!

MTL, didn't mean to question your work ethic, as I know you have done a $hiite load of work in Greenville. I guess I was misinterpreting that the reason you guys don't have this course in yet is because nobody has gone out and done the grunt work.

MTL,
I tell you what: why don't YOU volunteer to take over the Marsh Creek project so YOU can deal with Raleigh City Council, the Planning Board, Parks and Rec, the community association, the Army Corps of Engineers (you DO know that that the park sits in a FEMA flood zone so the ACE has to do an environmental impact
assessment and sign off on it before even a spadeful of dirt can be moved, don't you?), and all the other entities that must sign off on it?
Oh, and don't forget to come up with the money to pay to have the environmental impact assessment done if you're not willing to wait on the city's timetable.

I'll tell you exactly why I won't take it over - cuz I know it's something that I don't have the patience / energy / desire / time to deal with it.
But at least I recognize that before I commit to something.

Marsh Creek has been in da works for at least 4 years.

But at least I recognize that before I commit to something.
That's funny: from the way you were whining about how long it's taking to get the course put in, I'd have sworn you thought that if it were up to you, you'd have had it in the ground two years ago.

During my tenure as RADL President I worked with Parks & Rec quite a bit on this issue. I went to P&R Board meetings, I had meetings with the P&R Director and the Assistant Director at the P&R offices in downtown Raleigh, I walked the land at Marsh Creek with the Assistant Director multiple times, I communicated with the Assistant Director via email and phone weekly for almost a year, etc. etc. etc. Do you know where it got me? No where!!! Nothing but a lot of my time wasted.
The bottom line is that P&R would never give us permission to start working on the course. I asked multiple times point blank for permission to get started and they would never give me an answer. Nothing, nada, zero. I finally gave up. I would rather spend my time playing courses outside of Raleigh than spinning my wheels getting nowhere with the P&R in Raleigh.
I know that Neil has experienced nearly the exact same response from them concerning Marsh Creek.
So, if you want Marsh Creek to move forward then write a letter to P&R respectfully requesting that they give RADL permission to move forward with the project. Your letters will carry more weight if you have a Raleigh address. Also, don't limit your letter to just Marsh Creek. Raleigh has more park land per capita than almost every other city in North America.
Now that you know what you need to do I suggest you do it. It is up to you to get new courses installed. If you don't have the time for anything else then at least write a letter.
If anyone should have any questions about this issue that I have not addressed here please feel free to contact me.

Carlton and Richard have been on point on this. There have been several changes to the layout of Marsh Creek and adjustments to where buildings are being placed etc...
Working with government is not on over night process and these guys are doing their best to make it happen.

I propose this to help jump start Marsh Creek and get some interest in the site, course layout, etc...
Lets schedule a day to hold a temporary 9 hole tourney (at Marsh Creek) . We will look at the proposed layout and possibly play some of the future holes.
I have two skill shots we can use (anyone else that can bring a basket let me know). I will look at a good time to set this up... Any input on dates or anything else let me know...

pretty much your best options are thanksgiving weekend and sometime around christmas or january

The weekend before Christmas won't work either (Dec. 17 & 18). That is supposed to be the weekend of the Two Moe (New Bern and Kinston).
The only weekend available between now and the 1st of the year is Thanksgiving Weekend.

Why not do it on Dec 31st or Jan 1st. If I am correct those days are on weekends this year.
Winter Wannabe is a good suggestion. What about the Winter Wishlist?

Next weekend is the RADL monthly and RADL homecoming party so I think the schedule is full.
I'll be gone for Thanksgiving. :( Why can't we prioritize our little event over some others people may be looking at going to? Let's just pick a date and see who would be willing to come or take a poll. I'd make it for any other weekend except Thanksgiving for starters. :p
