Okay, here we go. Lubbock's third (Matt Ryan has Lubbock's second) course WILL be installed. You ask, "How soon?". I say, "Meeeee Tooooo!" We, me and Larry, met with the city parks director, the city parks development planner, and the parks irrigation designer today (Oct 18). The course is a go. Timeliness are here. Matt, Larry, and I will tweak an already develped design layout. The lake, yet to be cut, edges will be designated physically at the site. They are to make a ditch or similar so that we have the lake designation. There was agreement that we will have berms (in front of tee pads, at baskets, etc) put all over the course (don't know how many). Some tee pads will be elevated. Some baskets will be elevated. We will have some new trees (again, don't know how many). There will be at least one basket on a penesula, maybe a tee pad similar, some 'natural' terrain areas, some entirely mowed areas, some irrigated areas, some fairway only mowed areas. The course should have a full 18 with a practice basket. It will be a double loop nine one way and another nine another way (should be different personalities). Plans are for multiple tee pads and multiple basket positions. Tee pads will be concrete. There will be a long drive hole. A parking area will be provided. Expectations will also include a course sign, possibly full tee signs as well. The area is presently very, very open save a few trees on one edge (maybe max of three holes can be utilized). Design will be of utmost priority to make this a good challenging fair course. [I'm a potty-mouth!] at me now, not later. Yeehaw!

Slow but steady....The edge of the lake, woops, flat area that a lake wanna be, has been marked. Next up we will mark the few trees, lines, parking, roads, etc. Then go back out 'play' with things.

The lake edge has been defined a little better. The few trees and additional trees, parking edges, etc. have been more defined. A new updated map with these coordnates has been made (11-18-05). Now we head out and begin to look at the area again (layout possibles, etc.)

More markings done, course limits and boundaries defined a little better, prelim layout done by Brett (city) that really is pretty good, but play to tweak a little, Rob/Matt/P-Katt went out today, a few more questions from city, will do another layout soon, hope to be pretty close to final in a few weeks, will have option to tweak things still for some time.

Back and forth we go. Initial designs done, but now they are opening up (actually an original) area to us. This area actually has a few trees to work with. Our problem is that we will have to navigate a fairly narrow area between the lake and the roads...we're checking to see if we can get some lake relief, then maybe put in a short across the water shot. After these questions are answered, then back to the drawing board, layout, stake, designate tees/baskets/etc. and berms and other obstacles. We will need lots and lots of volunteer help on this project...please help when the time comes. I'll be posting misc on the Mackenzie sign soon and will have misc posted at the Ice Bowl HQ.

Early in Jan. 2006 we did go out and mark the first nine. We did get some relief between the lake and road (at least for now that is). We are looping a nine one way and another nine the other way. We're trying to utilize the few trees and some elevation as best we can. I think that when the city adds their part (different shapes of berms, trees, etc.) the course will be okay. More later. I'm thinking that we may do a portable event out there for fun in the future.

Stephen and I went out and played the first round ever (I think) at McAlister. We played the first nine (stake to stake) to get a 'feel' for the course (found a few needed adjustments). The plan is to stake the next nine soon. Then hopefully for one of the Hub City Sunday Slingers (like March 19....NOT official yet), we'll do a portable event to test the whole thing out.

What?! Lubbock is getting a new course? Awesome! (my in-laws live there)

Yes, we have recieved approval from the P&R dept to get a new course. The park land is flat with little to no trees. The Parks and Rec Dept. say that they are going to sculpt the land and "create" a usable DG course for us. They have been talking to our club, seeking input, throughout the whole process. It may be a while before the baskets are in the ground. It may be even longer before the course is challenging and fun to play.
We'd love to have you come to our tournament June 17-18, 2006. This is our 14th annual Big Arms on the Brazos.

I'd love that too...6 hour drive for us, but I bet I could talk my Mom-in-law into watching her Granddaughter so my hubby and I could both play! Hmmm...Have to see!
Will both courses be at the same park? Or so I have that mixed up?

I do have to mixed up...it's McKenzie and McAlister

Lubbock will be home to the big M(a)c's....correct spellings are: Mackenzie (1800's war hero) and McAlister (late TV station owner, past mayor). McAlister has some minor elevation. Plans are to enhance as in put in elevated baskets when throwing up slope and elevated tee pads when throwing down slope. I have been to the park trimming the few existing tree (lots of dead branches, diseased wood, overgrowth) for the last three nights. There are 21-ish trees and two evergreen bushes on the course (we have about 13 of them that will come into play). It's kind of strange, where now that some sweat has fallen, the area is beginning to look like a park. We put in positions for pro and rec pads and for triple basket postions on most of the course. Soon the city will be hauling dirt. We get to be selective of where mounds will be placed, etc. to further enhance play. Down the road they are also to put in many trees. Again, we will have opportunity to place trees for the course. There will be much tweaking on this course before things are completed. We are floating around the 7500 to 8000 ft marks in distance from pro pads, yet we have 8-9 holes that will be relatively aceable. The longest hole will be at about 750' with four near 600'. We want a good range of scores. We have two true water shots (one with water on the left, one with water on the right) and about three others where a stupid shot could result in getting wet.
We tried to run a portable basket event a few weeks ago, but the event was postponed due to the wind and rain...hope the same happens Sunday. If not, then this Sunday, April 2, 1:00 pm we will have a portable basket round at McAlister. Please bring your portables, come early for setup! The plan is to play the front nine twice, move baskets, play the back nine once....but we'll see. I really want to see how things throw, flow, etc.

We did a portable event on April 2. About a dozen players showed up in the very high wind. IF the lake would have had water in it, there would have been many, many, many OB's. I made some adjustments to fix several things (OB situations, fairway sharing problems, force more obstacles, etc. All 18 are marked (pro and rec and then triple positions). The city 'should' start soon on dirtwork....we hope.

Quick update. I've been to several more meetings concerning McAlister. The most recent was late August. The meeting was for finding a contractor to cut and move soil for mounds on the course. Contract is for $25,000, but includes BMX and silt fencing among other things. Basically, the contractors are finding it hard to realistcally make a good bid. However, the contract process allows for not only price, but suggestions to improve the situation...this is a route that we'll address. There are possibilities of minimizing use/cost of silt fence, installation during certain months also will minimize need/cost of fence, heights/slopes/acreage needs, and even exactly where the cut is to occur. For you out there that have courses going into established parks with trees, hills, terrain, etc.....you likely have no idea how much easier things are. More contractor discussion in early Sept. Then maybe things begin to actually start.

What is the latest word on this park being set up?
Finished?
Let me know when i can come up there and play on that new course.

I put some of the McA stuff on the back burner due to Cotton Pickin. Basically, there were contractors that were to bid on a contract a few months ago ($75,000 for dirtwork), but as the contract stood, no on took it. A few changes were made and as of a few weeks ago when I spoke with them a local contractor will do part of the work for DG and motocross and the city will provide labor and trasport of soil to DG. There was to be about a mile of silt fence, but if they can get all of the movement done in non-rain season (before April-ish), then they don't have to silt fence. So, once again there is a target date, but stay tuned.

On a side note....Matt contacted the city about putting in a course at Maxie Park. He wanted to do more of a recreational course in a high visibility area. Also he wanted to tie things in with the area....cancer, medical, etc. He even was going to put up a $1,000, not to mention installation, etc. time and effort. Well, all of this was in the proposal to the city. At this time, the city turned him down due to exposure to the streets. I turns out that the city has been getting complaits about hole 5 at Mackenzie (discs going into street) and they don't want another exposure on Quaker. Basically, we are not getting another course because of hole 5. Hmmmmm!!!

Quick update. The city was beginning to do dirtwork...raised pads close to the to be lake edge, some raised pads and basket postions that enhance the limited slope, and some mounds and berms at key distances to make play more interesting. Stakes were put in the ground, then all of the snow, then the rain, then the dark of night hit. The lake is pretty large, even without cutting defined areas. The city said that moving dirt is high on the list for the next few months (April - June)...but as always, we'll see.

Apr 29 2007, 02:13 PM
It is true! There was some action taken. They started moving some dirt from one of the few dry areas and placed it at tee pad and hole position areas of holes 3,4,5,6,7. I would estimate, as of several days ago, that they moved at least 30 truck loads.
p-katt
May 11 2007, 11:30 AM
Last week during the short span of dry weather, they moved at least a hundred truck loads. It appears that there are now some mounds on every hole (at tee pad, at basket area, between, or combinations). I sent a note to the city to encourage them to build higher, more, etc. if they need a place to move soil. We are leaps and mounds :Dbetter than only having a flat area. Much bigger mounds would make the course considerably better....we'll see.

Jul 12 2007, 10:59 AM
It's here! Finally, finally, finally the baskets are in (well talked to the City this am July 12, 2007 and was informed that baskets are to be placed onto the positions today). The tee markers (cut railroad ties, yes they oriented them incorrectly, but we'll work it out) were put in place earlier this week on almost all (still two locations short, lake cutting situation...too muddy till lake gets cut). There will be 11 elevated tee pads (only one location short due to the lake situation). There will be triple basket locations in the future. For now, only one location will be installed. Similarly, we'll be throwing off of the dirt for a while. No date is determined on when we get the concrete tee pads in. Let's all remember that this course is not or never will be a Mackenzie type course. We have to thank the City for getting the mounds put in as any change to the flat terrain is very advantageous. Now, the mounds are not as large as I'd have liked and I've expressed this to the City. There is a good possibility that the mounds will be expanded as the lake gets cut. There are other things that will help the course out, namely trees. These too are on the horizon, so to speak. The advantage of this course is that it is very visible. Non-DG'ers will see the sport much, much more. Kids will see the sport much, much more with the Legacy Play Village and the baseball fields, etc. just across a parking lot. We need to work on a course sign soon...volunteers?

Jul 12 2007, 11:09 AM
A few course specifics...Tee boxes are not marked well so for now we should throw from behind the tee box markers (except on the tee boxes on mounds, then the mound itself is the 'tee box'. Also, on hole 2 and hole 7 we have safety mando's. On hole 2 the disc must stay right of the left pole and left of the right pole. On hole 7 the disc must stay left of the poles. As the area progresses, we will begin to define some OB (water, or othewise). There will be new roads, new parking lots (the present lot will be extended south almost to the small tree near hole 9 basket). In this area we will install a practice basket and a course sign. I'll try to also get us a 'designated' table, bench, covered area). Trash barrels and benches will come in time. Disc golfers will be very visible, so let's REALLY show everyone how we can keep a park clean (pick up all trash). All parking lots, streets, and across fences (playground, baseball, 4-wheel drive track) are OB (tee pads are not OB). Dirt roads are not OB. Let me know your thoughts, good or bad. Let me know how you can help.

We will have our first organized event with permanent baskets in place at McAlister Park on Friday July 13, 2007 at 6:00 pm (back a year ago or so, in very high wind, we had a 'test' event with portable baskets on the first nine holes). Everyone is welcome! Who will get the first ace? Double boggie? Not make the mando and take a stroke? and so on...Let's have some fun at Lubbock official second and long-overdue disc golf course!

We had our first Windrider event at McAlister. We had somewhat unusual 10-15 mph northeast-ish winds, so play was a little different that what it likely will become. The first timers were Zack, Dillon, and Sherri from the rec pads and Matt, Chris, Albert, Bo, and me from the pro pads. A couple of firsts...the first rec tee birdie was on hole 1 by Zach. The first pro tee 'birdie' at a par 4 was Matt on hole 2. The first pro tee two was by Albert and Bo on hole 6. Chris had honors of missing the first mando - hole 3. Dillon had the same rec honors on hole 3. There are many mounds that come into play on several fairways. Sherri was the first to feel the wrath of a mound as her drive ended up on the left side of a firway mound on hole 5. Her next throw was difficult. Bo had the first backhand roller, and a very good one, on hole 7. It rolled smoothly up and over two of the mounds. I think Dillon attempted the first forehand roller on hole 17. His result was not so good as the wind coming up the slope really shot it far left of the hole. Bo took the overall score with a 55, then me, Matt, Chris, Albert. Of course, like always, Zach and Dillon tied with a 70. Dillon had the first circle snowman. Matt and Bo had double boggie free rounds (I missed out by one). The mounds really came into play well, especially so when the basket was on top of a mound in the wind. Once again, McA is no MacK, but I think it will be a course to experience occasionally. I figure with just a little more TLC we can make it a little better.

Wellllll, I'm not so sure about 'a great course', but my goal is to make it the best it can be within reason and resources (sounds like an Army commercial). I've played the pro tee pads many times and have not yet broken a 54. I've played the4 rec pads and am x under...played the front nine one day an the the back nine informally. I'm displeased of how they embelished on moving designed positions....oh well. I also pushed to get the tee pad locations fixed, a course map, distances, et....we'll see. I'm getting ten emails and five emails per day on the new course. They ask why there is no sign, no map, no scorecard, incorrect tee markers, and so on. I've emailed and tried to fix the situations. As you can tell, frustrations are setting in. More later.

Hi Steve. I'd play McAlister only if you have time to kill (saddly). But, if you do so, there is a sign just as you come into the parking area with a course map, general course info (mando's, OB, etc), and scorecards. The area is very open with only a few trees. I have mounds (only got about half of requested amount, and in wrong places in many cases) at many tee pads and many baskets...wind becomes a greater factor. Note, that the tee posts were installed incorrectly as they angle perpendicular to the tee pad as opposed toward the fairway on all other courses (I have got agreement from the city to correct this). As far as mini's - Thurs at 6:00 at Mackenzie, Sat at 2:00 at Mackenzie, 2:00 Sunday at Mackenzie, Sat at 9:30 at Levelland (good course...I've got the course record to this point on the 21 hole layout), first Tues of month at 6:00 at McAlister (will possibly change after DST). Map and scorecard also at http://members.door.net/mryan/Windriders.html PM or call me.

Matt, Matt, and Matt = ran the first first Tuesday McAlister Mini, won the CTB, and won overall (he sure is playing well lately). We had a good group from Levelland join us. Extra special thanks to Richard Winegar for donating $10 (in addition to Matt's donated $20) to the inaugural ace pot. Along these lines, the ace pot will be maintained from both the rec tee's and the pro tee's. We played singles all in a big group, but will break into at least two divisions next time. Total entry is $6, with $1 to club, $1 to ace pot, $1 to CTB, and remaining for winners. To date, 55 is the pro tee course record (Bo, July 2007).

McAlister is 'playable'. It's one of those courses to play if you have time. It does present some different challenges with the elevated baskets and mounds on the the way and around the baskets. Organized play is on hold due to Daylight Savings Time. I'd like to do a DG tour early next year...play Levelland, then McAlister, then Mackenzie....all in one day.

I've been asking for two years to get the Santa Land trees put into our Lubbock courses. Well, finally, success! I wanted to put a few on Mackenzie's hole 11/12 and then holes 16 & 17 as these holes would not need water, but got shot down on that front. I was told however that there are plans to have a 'tree project' with different types of trees (don't hold breath). But, the good news is that we are getting nearly 100 trees installed at 'tree challenged' McAlister. Constrictions were that they had to be in one area. I flagged the locations for trees a few days ago and then we played the area to see how things would work. The trees for this round (hope to make this an annual tree planting event), will be on McAlister hole 11 (apx halfway to basket and around the basket), hole 12 (basket area), and hole 17 (basket area). I also put a few flags/trees near the tee pads of hole 13 and hole 18. Likely, there will be only a percentage of the trees that survive. Again, any course is better than no course...and some trees are better than no trees. We're also supposed to get some trash barrels and the tee signs corrected. Further away plans will be pads and a course sign.

Jan 18 2008, 12:57 PM
I worked on getting the tee signs corrected (again) last week. They cut a portion of them wrong again.....sooooo frustrating! They are also to put metal numbers on each of the 36 tee posts. Finally, navigation for first time visitors will be a little easier. Matt and I have been playing McA about once every few weeks. I'm actually finding it (the course) to be a good change of pace. The mounds are working as planned. Trees will be installed (likely) next week (Jan 21) at the area of 10/11/12/17/18. We'll start up first Tuesday of the month play soon.

Feb 15 2008, 12:15 AM
There are now a few new trees at McAlister. Between the basket areas of holes 12 and 17 and the tee area of hole 18, there are about 50 trees newly planted. The trees are all evergreens and are about 7'-8' tall. They say that the base of the trees will range from 15' to 30'. They asked me to move a few positions....we comprimised. Overall, I have been very pleased with the installation, the coordinator, and the workers. All of my efforts to get the trees are now (maybe) paying off. Fifty-ish more trees are to be installed mostly on hole 11. They are working on the irrigation system also. All of the trees are to be irrigated, almost constanlty for the next year. At that time, they begin to cut back and see if the trees can grow on their own.
p-katt
Feb 26 2008, 12:53 PM
Well, all of this rounds trees are installed. I think that it turned out that 97 trees were installed. The irrigation system is fully installed. Every tree has an emitter. Yes, we need many more trees, but this is a GREAT start. There will be more trees installed as the park progresses. The city has plans to put in many assorted trees as time and money are available. Okay, how do the trees play? As with most projects, things are learned. I wish I could move a few trees a few feet here and there (some sightline issues, etc.). Overall, though, AFTER trees take hold and gain some height and girth, they will come into play as planned. I have played the affected holes in differing wind levels and directions and have found the trees to really change these holes up considerably. Go try it out. Remember we'll get the first Tuesday of the month play at McAlister back on schedule during DST....but, since the first Tuesday is all the way into April, I think a one time initial 2008 play at McAlister on Tuesday March 11 at 6:00 could work (show up early though!). Spread the word. Matt or I will run it.

We've got 100+ mounds...added together would equal one small mountain /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. I put elevated tee pads on all locations close to where the lake edge will be and where I could enhance the slight elevation rise/drop in the playa lake slope. Mounds are also between the tee pad and some of the longer basket locations..."should I throw over, or should I lay up". And then there are mounds near most of the baskets. I tried to have good preferred areas to drive/layup. Presently, six baskets actually are on top of mounds "to enhance the wind ingredient". Similarly, some mounds are close to baskets so that you have to put down to a basket from a mound. A few months ago we also got 100 new trees and an irrigation system installed. We're down to about 90 new trees right now (kind of expected). Now as far as a mountain is concerned, that'll take some time. But, as the lake gets cut, I'm hoping for more and bigger mounds and berms. I'm also eying an unused Hummer track mound....for a mgea-long position on hole 10.

First Tuesday play was...you guessed it....windy. We played doubles (best, worst, PPD) and had an ace pot (CTB if no hit). Rob and I won doubles. Rob won the CTB and then felt guilty for winning all the money so gave his CTB winnings to Ethan. I went out again (four days in a row) last evening. All of the second nine tee pads (pro and rec) are cleaned up (use a hoe to remove weeds and define the pads). I painted one spike of the bottom of the basket orange on every basket. The spike generally faces the next (pro) tee pad. Remember, the next organized play is at 6:00 on August 5.

There has been a rash of vandalism on the news recently at McAlilster Park (Legacy Play Village and Baseball Fields). The disc golf course now is part of the vandalism. We lost a basket, hole 14 at the far SW corner of the course, sometime over the weekend. The basket, I believe a Mach V, was removed from the pole base. I had locks located a few inches under the basket portion...thus the pole of the basket will have a hole in it a few inches under the basket portion. Also, I painted one of the 'spikes' on the basket orange (to point to the next tee). I'll put up $100 myself to get the basket back and to handle the theif. Contact me with any leads.
Also, the tee post for hole 12 pro was hit and damaged. I don't think these incedents would be related.

We're back to 18 at McAlister. I've got the tee pads in pretty good shape, fixed the tee marker (still in process of cutting them correctly). The trees that were planted are looking good (most have green 'sprouts' on the branch ends).

There were a dozen cars in the parking lot /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I took the win in the very high wind (remnants of Gustov). The next FIRST TUESDAY MCALISTER PARK PLAY is on October 7th at 6:00 pm (likely will cut a few holes due to dark creeping in).

There've been too many this year to remember. More recently, as in the week of Sept 8th, and a single day of Sept 11th, Lubbock really got heavy rain. This rain was actually from remnants of a Pacific generated typhoon. In one single day it rained 7.8" (at the official airport station). South Lubbock got into 12-13 inches. For the most part, our relatively new playa lake incorporated drainage system (yes there is a big tunnel under Lubbock that connects many of the lakes) worked well. I flew into Lubbock that evening...pontoon landings are pretty smooth. On Friday, I took pictures of water and damage at McAlister and Mackenzie. Amazing! My elevated tee pads (except for 6) worked perfectly...could still play them as water almost encircled them. McAlister lake became one of if not the biggest lake in Lubbock. Mackenzie had damage to the outdoor center, the outdoor center fence was completely bowled over from high water, and our bench logs were spread ALL over the park and roads. Later, tee pads had inches of mud or many inches of sand on them.

Matt ran the first, first Tuesday at McAlister (I could not attend). He said that there were nine players. He ran a handicapp round, based on PDGA player rank (1 stroke per 10 points). He ended up winning overall. The next first Tuesday is May 5th.

Matt put a small sign at the course with a map and misc info. I think that it has helped (I'm gettin a lot less emails and calls lately). There won't be any more First Tuesday Play at McA....Daylight Savings ends on November 1 this year. Sooooo, the First Tuesday Play will be April-ish 2010 (?). The trees at McAlister seem to be really taking hold, yeah!

More trees! The city parks and rec planted about 30 trees initially spread out on holes 1-9....only about 16 of the trees came into play at all. But, later in the week, they came in and planted more trees. I've not yet been able to get back out to see the effect. Getting the trees in good places should drastically help improve this course (just wish we could have input). Also, benches will be installed on every other hole as a scout project. And, a course sign is to be made by a scout as well. Yeah, and double yeah!

Rob and I played from the rec then the pro for 1-9 (where the new trees were installed). I must say that the second round of trees complimented the first round of trees. I think there are about 60 new trees added in total (all spread through holes 1-9). Holes 10,12,13,17, & 18 got nearly 100 trees a few years ago. As the trees grow, they'll come into play even more. Also, the city is looking into finding and planting deciduous trees (leaves fall off in the winter). The new addition of trees gave McAlister a very big jump in quality!!!!
Matt will be starting to work in McAlister Park into his high school student chapter play schedule. For the past few years, we've played at McAlister on the first Tuesday of the month during DST. We're thinking of possibly increasing this a little...maybe every Tuesday at 6:00 during DST.....but more later....DST is Sunday March 14th this year.

There sure has been a bunch of snow lately. McAlister weeds should grow well this year. There was a city meeting, part of which discussed irrigation and seeding. Benches are to go in sometime (every hole, but rec, pro, rec, pro, etc). Matt's students are playing more out there (Tuesdays!). First DST Tuesday = March 14th.
And the city parks and rec will be having a kite fly and frisbee fling on April 17th. I'll have a seperated thread soon as more info comes in. But, for the disc golf side, we'll first need some volunteers for likely two hour shifts (10-6). We'll have some putting, maybe a ring of fire with small give-away things, a long-drive competition, and likely a 'fun' round on available holes (the kite guys may take part of the holes). This event was VERY big, very visible, very fun in the past. It was the first time I actually saw a disc thrown.

Buffalo Beano style!
So this kite fly will be at McAllister? What are the chances of an out-of-towner sweeping ALL of the events? :) Maybe even setting a State Distance record?

Probably pretty good. I've had a couple of meetings with them. The kite side will likely be the dominate side of things. I'm just trying to help out on the DG portion. They're actually looking to see if anyone would be interested in doing demos on freestyle, maybe a guts game, maybe dog events, maybe MTA. I just never new any of those guys. Anyone interested? I'll have more info soon (and will start a seperate thread).

The Fly and Fling will be from 10-6 on April 17th. There will be many sizes, shapes, and speeds of kites. On the DG side, we'll have a long drive (kids and adults), a kid obstacle course (Mike is going to take it!), and a through the day play the course (or portion of the course where kites are not interferring) for a raffle give away (need sponsors!!!). The final details, flyer, etc will be out very soon...will post when they do. This event was very, very big in the past, as in thousands of people. We're trying to get it going again. This is a large opportunity to show what disc golf is about. We expect that there will be many who have never seen disc golf. So, we need some basic help. Mike is to get several DG'ers to work in two hour shifts. You'll be able to throw a little, do some putting, etc. but mostly just talk disc golf for the two hours.
