OK, that european championships had some of the best shots I've ever seen on video. Maybe they can get a DVD together. I love to watch the Swedes, Wegians, and Finns throw. The spike hyzer that backspins to the basket is wicked! They'll all be in NC in a few weeks!
For real, that is so awesome form and shots. I wonder what those players max golf D is. Probably none of them below 500. Spike hyzers are sweet, crazy how the one guy gets so low on his shot too.

Holy freaking molasses, this kid is insane. Watch his video on the Hyzernauts site. I think I'll go practice now...
All the videos on the 03 Memorial Open are down. I've tried clicking & right click/saving. No luck.
On the other hand, those videos on the HyzerTV site are insane.
I've only watched a few so far, but after watching my game will never be the same ;)
I've only been playing a short while & always tried to play the fade on longer shots, these guys shoot right at it, fast shots, little fade.
How far would you say the Ace was on Buddy Hyzers Rap Rasimok......400-450?

watch the bobby nautilus video, about halfway through he throws some sort of upside down thumber looking thing, i can't se his hand, but it is sweet, flips right up and into the chains...

Thanks Jonathan.
Sad to say but those videos made my night. First time I've actually watched a tournament through.
How exciting. I can't wait till this game gets some TV coverage. I was actually sitting here saying "nice shot" or "ooh, bad shot".
It's good to see at even at the pro level they still root for each other.
What a great game with great people. If it wasn't 12pm & I wasn't 4 beers in I'd love to go out & play right now..... (glad I bought a practice basket. :)
Plus it shows me that even at this level, they still miss 20 footers ;)

This will make you laugh your arse off! Theo Von (from Last Comic Standing and MTV shows) and his buddy Timmy Beggy have taped 4 guys doing a potato sack race at an intersection in LA. The winner gets $40 and they have consolation prizes for the rest. This is the FUNNIEST darn thing I've seen in a very long time, especially the "warm up"!

Is everyone buying this 140+ aces in 2 years business?
I mean, come on, can you really play that many rounds in a day, in winter even, and still have time to set up the camera for every shot? I think not!
This guys videos have come up recently on on our own website forum. Some pretty interesting and funny comments.
If the aces are all legit, he should be in Ripleys Believe It or Not and The Gunness Book of World Records!

Is it possible that this guy is just good at editing? I mean, say he records himself walking from the camera to the tee. Then he (sorta) looks like he's throwing a shot (I say sorta, because usually he's so out of focus that you can't tell). Then he gets behind a tree (Suspiciously, there are very few without any obsticles, always lots of trees....) and tosses one in with some zip. A little editiing, and voila! An ace a day keeps the doctor away!
This is certainly a novice opinion, but unless you threw a million disks, even from 200 feet, you're not going to get an ace a day. Just my thoughts.
-BG
P.S.... How long has he been playing? Why have all his aces come within the last year and a half (Or so)? You have to play for YEARS to get good enough to think about acing even once a month, so why all the sudden he's just getting aces all the time? None of it makes much sense.
paul
Nov 13 2006, 10:48 PM
I watch his videos and don't really care if he's doctoring them or not . . . what's the difference. There's some really funny on those videos. I love when he throws the disc and then plants his left foot way out -- looks like some sort of a pointer.
I hope he makes 1000 aces -- they're fun to watch. I forget which one it was but when someone else was filming one he yelled "LET'S GO DOWN TO THE BASKET". That's great stuff.
Listen after he makes his walks up when he's filming -- I love the way every one starts with "OK, Cubby gets his ______th disc golf hole in one with a ___________, that was sweet!"
I say -- make more videos Cubby.
If he's faking them he's gotten real good at it. He's all over my neighborhood. If he can fake them that well he should set it up so that you could get your own "ace" video'd. I'd give him some money to fake a film of me getting an ace.

I've played hundreds of round with Cubby and have witnessed over 50 of his aces. This guy is for real. He has a passion (obsession?) for aces. He does not set up the camera on every hole, only those of about 275' or so and he does not record at all on most rounds, although he has many aces on video, it's only a handful of what he gets.
As far as how many rounds he plays, that's another story. He plays almost every spare minute he has, He plays all hours of the day and night. During night rounds he tapes glow sticks on his disc to make it easier to find them in the dark.
He plays many different courses and aces in many different way's: righty, lefty (he can drive with either hand) skip shot, hyzer and anhyzer.
Some people are turned off by his videos but He's sharing what he loves on the internet, I think it's cool.
Believe me, He's for real.

Why the differing quality of camera?
Why is Cubby almost always obscured from view.
Ace number 136 video...come on you have zero detection of the disc being thrown, and it fades into the picture, as in you dont see it at the beginning of the throw til the end.
Also if you watch Cubby walking around before his "throw" you will see that the picture flickers and pops once or twice.
These are tell tale signs of fakies....

Nov 14 2006, 01:54 PM
I haven't watched that particular video, so I can't comment on the quality, but I've played enough rounds with Cubby and seen enough of his aces in person to know that he has no reason to make a fake video of one.
The guy works crazy hours at work, so he only goes out once a week at most but plays for like 24 hours straight, 30+ rounds at a time. His joy in disc golf comes from getting aces, so he plays shorter par 3 courses as many rounds as he possibly can.
(He's also an amazing putter. Anything he doesn't ace he usually flys by on, so he's gotten used to making 40-50 foot comebacks look elementary.)

I have to tell you, since I know Cubby, the fact that he refers to himself in the third person I can vouch for. I did a round with him and he was always saying "Come on Cubby" and when he missed he was like "Oh, Cubby." By the end of the round I was doing the same thing, only I was saying Cubby, and a third guy joked and said Cubby for himself too.
No really, Cubby is a great guy and I don't know how he got all these aces but I don't think he faked them.
Rutgers is a really short course, people get 38 on it and stuff.

I know many people that have witnessed Carl's aces and can guarantee they are legit. I've known the guy for almost ten years and can vouch for him being a man of honor. This is an absurd accusation.
As previously mentioned, with Carl's work schedule, he can only play disc golf on his days off, but when he plays, he goes all day - a dozen or more rounds in succession. He will start early in the morning, even before the sun comes up, and sometimes plays well into the nighttime. The course at which he plays, Rutgers University, is well lit on almost the entire course.
From the tee signs, the course is one of the shortest you'll ever see. It's longest hole is 230 feet, and the total course length for 18 holes is somewhere around 3500 feet. You can shoot in the low 40s on the course with just a putter, and there is a righty hyzer lane available on the drive on just about every hole.
This course is the closest to Carl geographically and allows the most "bang for his buck" - he can play the most amount of golf in the time he spends. With Carl's playing routine and the short nature of the course, he has attained a prolific groove that is unrivaled in disc golf, imo. With an enormous amount of practice, he has honed each and every drive on all 18 holes. He knows exactly which disc to throw and how hard to deliver it. He primarily uses Champion Firebirds which can attain the most consistency. He has scored several aces per day on several occasions, and shot more than 50 aces in one year!
There's been some banter before on this and other message boards about this. I've suggested that all that practice and all those aces have only allowed him to become an expert on that particular layout. I maintain that it does not help to make him become a better OVERALL disc golfer, especially on courses with longer (350' and up) holes. To wit, I've not gotten the indication that he does any better on the B and C tee layouts at that course, (which are much longer, and which he rarely plays) or that the skills translate to better play at other disc golf courses, especially much longer courses. And personally, I don't see the enjoyment in playing nothing but "pitch-n-putt" disc golf.
But the bottom line is that this is the kind of golf that makes him happy, and there's no denying that aces are exciting. And the sheer volume at which Carl attains aces is a tremendous feat, that again, I think is unrivaled in all of disc golf.

Another thing to think about is this, these vid's that cubby does are with a digital camera...they suffer from a low frame rate and that can cause the "jumping" around.

ps...Thanks Joe! Coming to KC anytime soon?
That is absolutely crazy. One miscalculation, and you're coming down right on top of rocks. I wouldn't want to see what happens then.

Wow, I realize that this video will get some initial ridicule, but it will no doubt stand the test of time as the greatest disc golf video of all time. I double dare you to watch it and not see the genius.

Where is the genius? I have the ridicule...from what I have watched before all these shots come on mostly the same course and are on all short holes...that are just basic hyzer shots...
with the distance on most of them someone needs to teach the guy how to throw his putter that far...nice pile of aces, but what a waste of CE plastic...
to each his own and congrats on the aces, but <200ft on most aces, on the same course, doesn't show much for his disc golf skills...anyone can use muscle memory for the same shots over and over and over...
I have watched this site for a while now and just don't get it...he should sell that stuff and put in a course that is a little more challenging
now let my bashing begin for this post :D

Dec 07 2006, 10:20 PM
Well -- alright maybe aces aren't all created equal . . . . but if you can't look at that stack of discs as then not start to laugh hysterically as you begin to realize that he's going to read off each of them -- the man's a genius.

Dec 08 2006, 01:56 AM
I keep all of my aces also...so I enjoy that aspect of his game...but I hope to see him play more courses for aces and hopefully enjoy aces of a longer distance
no disrespect at all...but I can run 150 baskets round after round also
shooting the same holes over and over doesn't make a good golfer..just a good shooter on the holes you know..
it took me 11yrs for my 1st and then 17 since 2000
A ACE is and ACE and that is what matters...but distance..difficulty figure in there also

An Ace is an Ace. If that's what brings you joy, and your local course is a bunch of Ace runs, then you are in luck.

I met Derek Hastings, one of the VSO Media producers, at the USDGC.
He's been to several big events this year capturing extensive footage of Nate Doss and other top players as his company considers the potential of disc golf TV programming. VSO does several other projects, including fishing-oriented TV programming and are looking to branch out.
I think there's big potential as established players in the industry pay some attention to Disc Golf! Lets hope this pans out - VSO has the contacts within the industry that might just do the trick when it comes to getting some mainstream broadcasts of disc golf.
Of course, if anyone wants to get some DG on their local community access station, give me a shout! There will be over 20 hours of disc golf on TV here in Ann Arbor in the coming weeks...
Derek recalled seeing Disc Golf Live on his local Santa Cruz public access station just after he played his first round. It wasn't long after that he was pitching the idea for disc golf programming at his company.
Best regards to all!
Joe

No ones rolls more often & more effective than Joe Mela.
Indeed, Joe "The Technician" Mela is one of the best rollers in disc golf. As a lefthander, he uses a backhand roller to accomplish hard left hand turns on holes that favor righty hyzers. He also uses rollers to achieve long distance throws.
Imo, at times however I think he opts for the roller when a simple airshot would be preferable. I can think of one instance in particular: in a tournament several years ago at Tinicum, Joe chose to thow a roller on hole#4 in the A position. This hole plays slightly uphill through scattered trees and is no longer than 150 feet long. It seemed strange to me that a 1000-rated player with exceptional short game and putting skills would choose to roll a 150-foot hole.

You answered the question yourself when you said "through scattered trees"
Rollers are verticle, air shots are horizontal. Verticle discs fit better between scattered trees than horizontal discs.

The spaces between the scattered trees are a least a dozen feet wide. I've seen many a dozen recreational player park the B and C pins on this hole. I don't know of any online pictures of this hole, but trust me, there is little reason for a 1000-rated player to throw a roller when a 150-foot airshot to the A-pin would easily suffice.

Once you've been at that level for a long time, you may be looking for ways to challenge yourself. I remember back in the 90s before ratings when I was the prohibitive favorite in Master among those who showed up that event. I decided I would roll the tee shot on every hole in the first round just for fun including a hole with a creek crossing the fairway 150 away. You sometimes never know why someone may choose something on occasion that may not even be normal for them.

Jeff, Joey was just effing with your mind.
I do it too. I'll hit first available off the tee on purpose to set up for a more dramatic scrambling approach shot.
Makes for a more interesting game..

Jeff, Joey was just effing with your mind.
I wasn't at that tournament - I was told about it from a participant. I can't think of any other specific examples, but I do remember several occasions where it just seemed like he threw a roller only because he could, not because it was the preferred strategy. I usually see rollers thrown only where there is a low ceiling or extra distance is needed. If there is a relatively open and short hole that a player can easily reach with an airshot, why throw a roller?

I really like Scott Stokely says for shots that he would do that people would question like this: "Based on my game and my particular skill set, I threw the best shot that worked for me"
of course, he could just be F'ing with people.... God knows I do that with flick rollers and thumber/tomahawks.
