Hey, I've got a brother in law (signs on as AlmaWillie) that is trying to start a disc golf club at Alma Middle School. We think that since they put the course in at Alma this club would be a great way to get kids introduced into the sport. Any suggestions/equipment helps alot! :)

I first started playing because we played in Gym class. we used the EDGE discs and baskets from innova, and then we went to the local courses after a little bit of practice.

I believe it all began with one disc golfing PE teacher contacting Innova. i assume the cost is low since it is a special program to get kids interested in the sport. just check out the EDGE link on innova's website and im sure you could contact them for more info.

Here in Emporia KS, our Middle School has an 18 hole Disc Golf Course on the School property. I help run an intramural Disc Golf League there.

We have three holes set up at the middle school, and we used to have a course at the high school. To much construction at the high school and lack of interest at the middle school kept us from playin, though. If we start this club, kids could really get into it.

Sorry for the thread drift, but I thought this was a funny story.

My family was vacationing in Estes Park, CO and one morning I convinced my wife that we should drive to Boulder and play disc golf. I had a Yahoo map with directions to the course, but alas we got lost and we were finally able to locate the course after driving around for about an hour or so. I walked up to the closest teepad and got ready to throw when all of a sudden I saw about 50 or 60 Junior High kids running towards the course from a nearby school, each of them with a disc in their hands. They scattered and descended on every teepad on the course and started throwing like mad. Discs were flying everywhere. We just got back in the car and drove away. :(

Junior High PE class was never that cool back when I went to school.

I teach disc golf at a private high school in the summer. Every year this one of their favorite units. I show them DVD's and give them basic info with teminology and local courses. After a few days of practicing putting on practice baskets, throwing uphsots into the circle in the middle of the football fiedupshots, & driving, we head to a local course for a round.

I also teach a week mini unit at the middle school I teach at. I bring in my portable baskets and show them basics. Even some of the gang bangers like throwing discs :).

I am starting this club tomorrow (Fri. 16) looks like anywhere from 30-50 kids will sign up. I am looking for old discs, or a portable basket we could use. I can pay a reasonable amount or get you a donation tax slip. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even anyone who knows where I could get a grant or something?

Nice job Schwake! Heck, with some success they could have you out there teaching the kids the importance of showing up second day at a doubles tourney! :D

a fwe of my high school students want me to start up a disc golf league...thinking about doing it next year.

After school today a few of them went out to the football field with me and watched me bomb a few between the goal posts. They were quite impressed.

Hi, Alma Willie
Now, after its been a couple of months, we are curious about how it's going?

Are you guys playing once a week as a club?
What age groups are involved?

It is so exciting to hear about all the activities for guiding youth into the disc sports. Someday, it will be greater than ball golf.

And don't forget to teach them how to throw Frisbees for better health with other flying disc sport. We start the youngest kids with Frisbee golf, and shorter range targets.

HOE! (Heaven On Earth)

Going very well, thanks.
I really got alot of good response in the community, several donated discs and even a couple of portable baskets.
The club is practicing once a week, and also at every recess. We range in age from 11 to 14 yrs old.
We are having our first tournament next weekend, figuring on at least 20 of my 40 being there. Have two that are already shooting even or right at it on our local course. Great potential.
I'll try and keep you updated periodically.

Another update (been a while)

We are still at it once a week. I now have 15 who are really die hard players. 2 who have joined the PDGA and at least two more in the next few weeks. I have one who is a real talent (at least on the home course) We went out today for a mini and he shot -7, which is great for this course. Our local pros would struggle for that. And the kid is just 13!!! He can throw around 300ft, pinpoint accurate with the mids, and didn't miss a putt today from within 30ft (hit one at 40 into the wind)
Tom Pitchford and I were talking and the only thing we wonder about is if he can play as well on another course. He plays ours at least 3-4 times a week. I'm not sure he can read a hole, as much as maybe he has just thrown these so much. Only time will tell, but we are pushing him towards junior worlds! Watch out!

Oh also, I have been talking to another teacher at an alternative school about 30 miles from me and he is wanting to start up a club. If anyone out there is wanting to unload a few old discs real cheap let me know and I'll get him the message. Thank everyone for all they did for me, we are up and running away!
