What are the REAL dates?
The LSDGA schedule shows VPO am weekend in early october, and the VPO pro weekend in early november.
The PDGA tour schedule shows only one event in early november.
Will the VPO have 2 weekends, or are we consolidating to one?

Aug 08 2005, 06:31 PM
There may be a schedule conflict if we are combining Am and Pro together on 11/5 - 11/6.
14th annual VPO = 11/5 - 11/6
1st annual South Texas Am shootout = 11/5 - 11/6

I think doing it as a Pro/Am is a good idea. The turnouts have been so low lately, we don't need 2 weekends.

South Texas..DFW...sometimes choices have to be made
A combined weekend would bring a better turnout IMO

Are those voices i hear? :D
Let me know guys ,This South Texas Am Shootout Is on the books as an Atier Next year .somebody needs to Talk to Gary Duke and let him know .As of a couple of months ago when I had a conversation with Terry Toolen nothing was said about combining thats why this date was picked .I would not have done this if VPO was a pro am.

Aug 09 2005, 01:15 PM
Sorry for the delay Billy. I don't know why nobody has answered yet. I've always lived by "ya' snooze ya' lose." In this case, the VPO could lose 90% of the ams in Austin/SanAntonio/Houston. I sure do hope someone answers these questions before its too late.
I thought the am date was in OCT .I could switch the dates to oct next year but this year I am running a C-tier in ingelside on the 9th of Oct.

If I could get ahold of Toolen I could give you some definate answers. I know when I talked to him in the past about combining the weekends he didn't really like the idea, so I don't think we are going to combine them this year.

No combining please. When I was Am, I loved that we had the course to ourselves. And, I feel the same way as a Pro. If you combine the weekends there will be to many backups and it might force us to play another course. I love that course and don't want to play anything else. Please keep them on seperate weekends. ADGA is the bomb, keep up the good work guys.

Uh.....what other course? :D Not for the VPO....that's only happened once back in 1996. Prolly never happen again. :D

Hypethetically (spell check) speaking. I've seen a couple of tournaments where we played one course for a number of years and once the tournament got to big they added another course and now tournament sucks. I think this is because when temp courses get added the holes are usually about 225 ft each and they'll try and throw in a 500 footer. They just don't have the land to do it or it isn't layed out correctly. I know this wouldn't happen with the ADGA, but this has been my expierence.
Ok Everyone Here is your answer.
This year the VPO will be held on seperate weekends as usual. Billy is going to be running his AM Only event on the Pro dates which are Nov 5-6. The Am weekend will be played on Oct 8-9. I do not mind running both weekends, wish we could get our old AM date back. We will see.
If and when we run a combined VPO. We will use tee times and maybe more holes per round. Since that will not be until at least next year, I am not going to worry too much about it.
Please make your plans to play in the VPO as the ADGA will put on one of the best tournament experience you can get.

Thanks Terry. You guys (and gals) do a great job. If we are doing more holes next year (>24) I'll need to know earlier because my beer belly is getting big. :D
Thanks Terry ,And The Adga. Also sorry for the conflict .Next Year we will all be on the same page.

The Am weekend is not listed ont PDGA Tour Page. However, the event listed on Nov. 5/6 says Pro/Am. Is this tourney going to be combined?

No link on titleDISC or info on the PDGA boards...does the ADGA want a bigger turnout than last year? I had almost talked some people into coming to it this past weekend at the MJCO until they got home and saw that there was no info on it and decided to do something else.
I haven't played a mini in a while, so I'm not sure if it's going down on October 8-9 or not. Combining the weekend almost seems like a better idea because it would cut down on costs. Anyone have any flyer info or anything?

The last couple of tournaments held at Veterans had little to no promotion at all, so it does not surprise me that there has been no promotion of the VPO.
Heck the VPO and the Fling didn't get turned into the PDGA, and I wonder what that $2 went to or whom.

Terry,
Do you all have any info on entry fees, meeting time/place, etc.? TitleDisc? I think maybe that's what everyone was looking for since it's less than 3 weeks away.
I will have all of that posted tonight. I have been getting the flyer together and will post those around town very soon. I will not do Titledisc for Am weekend as it would take Ben a week or more to get it up and would have to close it just as fast. Look for entry forms at your local course very soon.

Man...all these people giving T.D.'s CRAP about attention to details.
I think it is do time as T.D.'S we charge( and I mean big time charge) for players list, posting information, providing players with food, players packages, scheduling, reporting, course grooming, or hotel deals.
Or my favorite answers to dumb questions.
Look people if you want to see something done ….. instead of bring the problem to light come up with solution or God forbid pitch in.
If you don’t like how it is being handled ….STEP UP AND TAKE SOME CRAP.

With John I know he was giving me hell. Everyone else........I just do what I can and they are going to b!tch or not. I have done this for too long to let WHINERS bother me. I do get tired of the constant second guessing, but that comes with the job. Oh wait it is not a job or else I would get PAID!! We have a local guy and I am sure everyone knows him, will call me the friday of the tournament, saturday morning before we start at least a couple times. Then at lunch both days, always calling with STUPID QUESTIONS!! What time do we start, what pads, what positions. Mostly if people would listen at the players meeting or read their program, they would know. ok Rant off!!!!

I took the day off and played a round today at the Vet, and there was no flyer up about the VPO. Is it on for sure? I know I haven't been able to go to a mini in a while, but is that the only way to get info? Sure doesn't seem like many people are going to come other than those who have played it before...if even that.
If someone has a flyer and wants me to go up there and post them, please email me and I'll be glad to help.
I have been out of it all week. Just went back to work today. Yes, you are more than welcome to come help out. I need someone to post flyers all over town. You up to that?? PM me your number and I will give you a call.

Big Thanks to Jason and Ginetta for help all weekend, both on and off the course. These two do so much for our club, it would be very difficult to pull off an event with them. Thanks You Two!!!
I also want to thank the rest of the staff and players that helped out: Andrew Toolen, Brain Lamoreaux, Charles Cox, Dan McGough, Clayton Bethmann, Chris Pepperling, Gene Norbriga, Skip Maxwell, John Mauiro, Claydog Brumit, Brad Bishop, Dennie Ortega, Don and Laura Quattlebaum. I hope I did not leave anyone off of the list. If so, I personally thank you for your help.
We had a light turnout, but with all the other events taking place at the same time, I can see why.
We still had a very fun time. I always like watching everyone drive off of the mountain on hole 8. The weather was very nice, except for the small amount of rain we received saturday morning. Ace golf was a great time as always.
I look forward to a Great Pro weekend on Nov 5 and 6. Register early and make it easy on us come saturday morning.

All we were looking to do was to give some of the AMS that couldn't make the original one a chance to play this great event. Offering AM divisions would have given us more resources to give away to everyone. We've all lost something now.
I agree that it'll be a great event regardless, with current World Champs, and Past World Champs. It's just sad that we were asked not offer AM divisions....even if it could have been at a lower tier level for AMS.
No big deal.
Looking forward to my favorite weekend at The Vet nonetheless.

This was the 15th Annual.
Steamboat is correct...1991 was the inaugural year. That '91 VPO was not the first sanctioned event at Veterans Park, however. The ADGA hosted an event in 1990 (the year the course was installed), but it was not called the "Veterans Park Open". And I believe it was a summertime event. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the tournament...Skip probably remembers...
Jerry,
Wasn't it something like double barrel shoot out, or outlaws shootout. I seem to remember seeing a disc with a stamp like it was looking down the barrels of a double barrel shotgun........
gotcha

No, the Double Barrel Shootout was a sanctioned doubles tournament hosted by the ADGA. I want to say that event was in 1993. The following year, we changed the name to the Texas State Doubles Championship....hosted again at Veterans Park before the Houston club stepped up and took it over the doubles tournament.
You'll need to ask Skip or one of the other old timers about that 1990 tournament. I'm racking my brain trying to remember the name...

from the TX10 thread:
"This Sunday I have decided to offer a Trophy Only division within the Pro Women for half price entry.
The cost to any Am lady that does not think they can cash but still get to play with the Pro's they will only have to pay $25. That money will go into the Pro Ladies purse.
"
were we given the same option and decided not to offer it, or werewe refusedthat option?
i would like a definitive answer from someone in the ADGA hierarchy.
thanks.

What's up Jerry?
If I remember correctly , the name of the event was something like "The Independence Open" and was held around the 4th of July weekend in 1990!
The first annual VPO was held in 1991...

You'd have to hear it from Terry. I think he's the only one that actually talked to the PDGA.
So, what do you have up your sleeve?

You could at least use the word "please" when requesting "a definitive answer from someone in the ADGA hierarchy". Your statement sounds like it came out of the mouth of a politician. Nonetheless, I cannot resist offering you my opinion....
October 8 & 9, 2005
Those were the dates for the VPO Amateur weekend. So what if Toolen initiated a poll on the matter? Who cares if the ADGA or the PDGA made the decision to not allow amateur players play the pro tournament? It's water under the bridge now.
Maybe that's something the ADGA can consider doing next year...allowing ams to play at half-price with no cash payout/trophy only. Besides, any amateur player could have played the pro weekend....after all, that's why they call it the "Open" division.

I think you're right about this tournament name and date. I'm sure that either Skip or Gene can confirm. Please tell them "Hi" for me when and if you do.
I spoke with Brian Mace last night and this particular topic came up during the conversation. He recalls "Circular Skies over Arlington" in 1990 as the first event at Veterans. I believe he's right. John Houck ran that event...the only Circular Skies event held at Veterans Park. That would have been in the springtime of 1990 if I'm not mistaken. I still remember some old t-shirts from that event...

jerry, i didnt intend to be impolite, or a politician. (altho some say i excel at being both :) ) i was just stating what i would like, as in "i would like two scoops chocolate mocha", or "i would like some good chilly fall weather at some point this year".
and since we're talking about politeness and political correctness, why must you keep bragging about Cher? i mean, a LOT of guys have got her at some point or another! :D

Circular Skies over Arlington was the second event at the Vet. I remember quite well, as I ran the Independence Open, and then won the Open division at Houks event in 1991.

Craig...who won that Independence Open? Also, do you recall who won the 1991 VPO? I know that little 18 year old Mikey Sayre won in 1992...

Mitch Mac won the Independence open. I took both PDGA events at the Vet, Circular Skies and VPO in 1991.

b/c in 2004 only 48 AMs and 56 Pros came out to play. In 2005 only 33 AMs and 67 Pros. The real ? is Why not run a Pro/Am?

Ya, what about z-boaz open and ceader hill with 5 somes on every hole. That sucked!!
You know once you make it a pro/am event you will have 100 ams and 100 pros wanting to play and that is too much on one course.

why not add cedar hill to the mix and make it a pro-am;half the divisions play the coyote the rest play the beaver or whatever the other course is called.

It wouldn't be the Veteran's Park Open without being at Veteran's Park! I agree that it'd be nice to have more events at Cedar Hill, but the Big Show is in January and the TX10 is in a couple of weeks, so that's not too bad.
To save the wasted workload of the staff and everything else, it should definitely be a Pro-Am this year, based on the turnout of the last two years. It would probably need 36 holes though...although I like the 3x24 hole format. I'm sure something will get figured out soon...October is fast approaching!

2 rounds Veterans and 2 round Cedar Hill; ZBoaz Open is still ZBoaz Open and you play Weatherford.

I am sure this would never happen, but what about Veterans (18 hole layout) and Z-Boaz on Saturday. Then 1 round of 24 or 27 at the Vet on Sunday?

That krap course was just played last year for Z-boaz open, don't plan on it next year.
The Texas Ten at the Vet a couple of years ago put in two courses, so if it is going to be pro/am I don't see why they couldn's do it again.

The only issue I had with that setup is that most of the temp holes were in the wide open. Didn't make for very good design.
