View Full Version : Looking for suggestions
Hey guys I was hoping for some suggestions to something I decided to work on. I am currently a member of the Kingsport Jaycees in good ol Kingsport Tennessee. Throughout the year we put on different events in the Kingsport TN area. One local project that has caught my attention is the Darrell's Dream project. Its a boundless playground being built right near our disc golf course at Warriors Path State Park. I am going to speak with some local disc golfers with the hopes of getting some insight into putting on a good charity type event to raise money for this cause. Do you guys have any suggestions about things I can do to make this an attractive event that disc golfers would want to attend. I realize it will never be anything as big as some of the other charity events but this is for a local cause and I would like to try and get some involvement from outside the region if possible.
Any advice / tips are welcomed.

bag tags....small portion of mini/one dayer......sell plates.
Good Luck!
I'm going to look for a local company to maybe sponsor a portion of my payouts with the hopes that I can pay out cash to the pro's and plastic to the others. I want to make the tourney attractive to people so they will come but need to charge a fair price to get some money raised for the charity. I figure some nice CTP prizes can be donated by local food places and such. Keep up with the ideas as I'm a rookie at this part of disc golf and want to do the best job I can for the charity.

plan way ahead !! sell some fundraiser discs!! run a mini witha portion of the profits going to the tourney!! challenge the players to raise money as well giving free entry to the top couple of fundraisers!! there are many ways if the will is present!!! :D
This year we held a fundraising disc golf event called the 'Disc Golf Charity CityChampionships' Look for a magazine article on it soon. Our local club teamed up with the local chapter of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters (BBBS) to put the charity on. A large part of their existence is based on charitible contributions and we were able to tap into their network with a unique/fun opportunity. We sold 4 person teams to companies and organizations for $200, the teams needed no disc golf experience (organzations/donors without a team could sponsor a BBBS Team for $100). Each team was matched up with a 'Captain' (an experienced disc golfer from the area). The format was best shot with only 1 shot per hole being able to be used by the captain.
With our charity partner we were able to get quite a bit of press coverage, local paper, radio interviews, etc. We had the mayor there to kick off the event. We lined up sponsors to provide food (Arby's, local beverage folks, etc.) and provided a T-Shirt and Disc for all involved.
The local club folks dug it because they were disc golf celebrities for the day (they played free, received the players package and lunch, etc.). They provided instruction for the teams and 'wowed' them with bomb drives and long putts. The participants enjoyed the no-pressure format and were given a freindly welcome to the sport.
Behind the scenes we split up the money 50% for BBBS Charity, 25% for expenses (Trophies, T-Shirts, Discs) and 25% for the local club to host. We sold 14 teams - and raised $1600 for BBBS. Best Buy provided as many staff members for the day (they were on the clock w Best Buy) as we needed.
Hope this helps and Best of Luck in your endeavors,
Pat Govang

Wow what a great idea about the teams aspect of the event. You have hit on something that might just help make this event a huge success as I too have contacts into those types of groups. Great ideas....keep them coming!!!
