Brent Baartman #18844 from Madison Wisconsin. Only played in his 1st worlds this year, but played over 1000 rated golf, AND qualified for USDGC. He just missed cashing, but for his first time in Rock Hill he played GREAT!!
One of the greatest guys you want to meet, he does't play many events, but has a great training ground in Madison. The BEST player to play Token Creek Vallarta/Ast Park ( He should've been on the DVD with Barry,Kenny,Keith,Chris, when they came down from worlds, Brent and Keith would have KILLED them) and also a private course where he's always practicing.
So come on Dave give him a look!!

Just in case Innova is wondering......I throw all Innova discs. I would love to be on the scout team.

Quick Resume:

August 2005 - First threw a disc.
January 2006 - Bought PDGA membership.
May 2006 - First tourney playing OPEN.
July 2006 - First OPEN cash.

(2006 9 tourneys, 2 advanced and 7 open, 3 cashes, zero 1000 rated rounds)

June 2007 - First OPEN WIN! Cedar Creek Open (C-Tier)
September 2007 - First B-Tier Win! Treasure Cove Classic
December 2007 - Third Open Win of the year. Todd Park Tundra

(2007 - 26 tournaments played, 19 cashes, 3 wins, 63rd at my first worlds, 8 1000+ rated rounds and 20 of 61 were 990 or higher, player rating jumped 40 points during the year from 938 to 978)

January 2008 - Became a TD
March 2008 - Played in my first NT event, The Memorial - tied for 29th
March 2008 - Ran my first C tier event, also played in event and took 2nd.
April 2008 - First Win of the year, Minnesota Spring Open C-tier (23 open players)

So far this year other than My first two rounds at Vegas which can be attributed to South Dakota Winter Rust, every round (8 in total) I've thrown has been rated 993 or higher including 5 of 1000 or greater. I am planning on playing in many tourneys again this year and continuing to improve my game as I have been for the past two and a half years I have been playing. I don't know how a person goes about getting on the Innova Scout Team, but I figured this can't hurt anything. Maybe the right person will see it or something. I think I fit the mold for a Scout Team Member. We'll see I guess.

See you all out there at some tournament or another.

Apparently all you have to do is post your resume and live in an obscure disc golf area to get picked up!

Thanks Tank, for suckering me into playing Open and taking all of my money in only my third tournament ever. I'm glad you did though, it made a huge difference in the advancement of my game.

Thanks everyone else who has helped me with anything disc golf related over the past 2 1/2 years.

I will be out there playing in a bunch of tourneys in 2008, starting this weekend at the Back-to-Back B tiers in Council Bluffs and Omaha. Now I will not only be playing for myself and South Dakota, but Innova as well. Needless to say I'm very excited about and thankful for this opportunity. I intend to keep playing at a high level and to always represent myself and those I play for in a positive way.

Thanks again, and Tank, when are you thinking you'll be back in the Midwest, or don't you?

See you all out on the course,

Travis

Didn't Sprague beat McCabe in a sudden death safari hole playing through the Chalet?

It's funny that I was one of the two guys singled out as being loud and partying that night. Especially since I don't drink, party, or act obnoxiously. There were probably 20-25 people in or around our chalet all night. I actually went to bed at around 1:00 am. I left three putters in the basket outside our door and I guess people were playing with them for a while after I went to bed. In the morning I awoke to find my putters, along with Aaron Martin's, were missing. One of the guys next door came out early in the morning to do some putting and upon seeing our putters in the basket, grabbed them and kept them from us without telling us, basically making us sweat it out until about 3:00 in the afternoon. That whole situation sucked. Next year I'm going straight to bed upon arrival to worlds, only after I place my putters under lock and key.

Congrats Blaser!

and by the way Kenny - Travis was definitely not involved (nor was I) I wish the putters were left or at least a note letting them know where to find them. ( I know you didn't do it Kenny)

For the record - Tank was DQ'd for "corking" his pizza box with a golf disc!(he was killing it until the "corking" scandal)

And I think I edged McCabe out by 1 stroke when I birdied the par 5 through the front door of the Chalet and out the patio - pretty amazing pizza golf competition! I think Glen Whitlock showed us who's boss though with his breif appearance and mad pizza box skillz!!

It was the guy, senior grandmaster, that was staying next door to us... He was kinda a jerk, can't remember his name.

When we were all out there putting, before this incident, and Climo was shagging all of our putters for us, and that guy, who wasn't even playing the game, came out to putt and "sternly" told Champ not to touch his putters...Weird individual.

Alright, if you want to go with the higest non current player in SC its Ben Gaddis, if you want to say you have to be current then its Matt Peckham. Both are great players.

i just figured highest rated meant they had to be rated... not have an old rating.

if it was football season Tom Brady could have the highest QB rating even though some guy years before had a higher rating at some point... making Tom Brady the highest rated QB :)

Peckham... is no Tom Brady ;)

on that note... Congrats to Henry for out throwing Peckham and a few other guys you might've heard of @ Maple Hill to win the distance competition! If you're on a course and someone asks "where'd that BOMB drive come from?"... just tell em' CHARLOTTE! ;) LOL

btw... another example of why Peckham should be sponsored... MAPLE THRILL this past weekend... good show Peckham! Highest rated DG'er in SC (by 11 pts!)... only SC rep who made the USDGC so far other than the state spot and Harold... wears mexican wrestling masks, drives the INNOVAn and looks like Wolverine.

Matt has had a stellar year and tours as much as anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if Matt doesn't hit 50 events this year. With over $5000 in winnings this year, Matt has really earned his way onto the team. Keep up the hot shooting!

matt $$ is a great guy. ive enjoyed every round that ive played with him and the dude has a SICK thumber. good pick up for innova. great story: he was finishing giving his speech after winning this years mountain disc golf experience in asheville, NC. he was about to walk off the stage but instead he put his trophy in the air and shouted "VOTE REPUBLICAN!" HAHA he was booo'd off the stage so fast... haha i'm %100 not conservative but i definitely got a kick out of it considering that asheville is widely knwon as one of the most liberal minded places in the world. hah that took some BALLS!

Thank you Zach and thank you Wyatt for the vote of confidence for Chris. He is a great golfer and improving daily. He's outside putting as I type and we just got back from playing a round. Once he improves to the point of sponsorship, they'll notice him. He's kinda hard to miss. He'll get there though, I'm sure of it. Last I checked, Sheboygan Wi. did have a sponsored player. You may have heard of him, Barry Shultz. He's a pretty good golfer, from what I've heard. My bet would be, if Sheboygan ended it with 2 sponsored players, the other may end up with the same last name as Barry. Keep practicing though Zac, if it's meant to happen, it will. What a crazy name though...Sheboygan, I enjoy just saying it! Sheboygan!!! LOL!

This is some advice for the future. 1st being a sponsored player of a company means being a representative of that company and their product. Re-read your post. It is not that well written. It is filled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. If you are going to be making an argument for being sponsored you need to take some care to things like how you post on a public message board. Also, Innova is not combing the message boards looking for people to sponsor them. If you are really interested in such a thing you need to contact them directly. Have a well written letter laying out why you think that you would be the best person in the world to represent their company. Lots of people win tournaments but, only a small number of those people end up being sponsored. Image is everything! Hopes this helps your quest...

Scott makes a good point. Don't get carried away. My friend Evan SMOKED a lot of kids when he first started golfing in the Under 16 division. But it was a lot of tournaments with few kids, and they weren't very talented. It looks like you're doing the same thing. You're even at the same skill level he was at at the time by the looks of it. Right now, 3 years later, he's smoking the advanced division and looking at next year as his big start as a pro. And he's nowhere near being sponsored.

Don't get carried away just because you're beating some little kids that aren't that good yet. Just keep working and it (sponsorship) will happen when it happens.

Yea what he said! Now if you go to worlds and win I wouldn't be surprised if Gateway would call you but at the moment you just need to keep practicing so you can get to where you are taking down most of the advanced guys.

After that practice more until you can take down those Pro guys too. Then beat Barry and maybe they will sponsor you.

True story! Hell Kris Orrick's rating jumped over 1000 for the first time back in 04, and he's been back and forth between 990-1010 since then and he JUST got picked up. The teams can't keep expanding as more and more quality players appear, its going to be tougher and tougher to get on teams.

The problem isn't who gets added and when, its that these companies never seem to drop anyone. Sure, it happens and when it does, it happens quickly and quietly.

Zach,
don't sound so defeated. It really does take alot of hard work and determination to be a good golfer, even more so to exceed and to be sponsored. And once you do get your shot, it still takes alot of work to maintain it. Practice, my friend, and when your done, practice some more. Play as many tourneys as you possibly can, play up, and play well. Have a good attitude out on the course, help at tourneys. Good sportsmanship is the best way to get noticed by many. If it's meant to be, sponsorship will happen. If not by the major manufacturers, then some other team. There's alot of top notch teams out there that any decent golfer would love to be associated with. But again, it takes your willingness to work for it both on and off the course. Good luck buddy, and be patient, your time will come!...Manny

Zach,

Manny is right. Practice. Use Andrew’s Training method. One Tournament at a time. We returned home on Sunday after Wolrd’s. Monday he was training and practicing for The Oak Hollow Open with is this weekend. Putting practice every day. Creating challenging shots to practice (AKA trouble shots). playing as many rounds as possible.

We play 10 to 12 Sanctioned events a year, several unsanctioned including monthly’s, Weekly Singles and doubles. using the above Training idea by the time Wolrd’s rolls around your ready.

A quick Story on trouble shots. Andrew and I play Horse for putting practice. If I am getting close to winning (not too often) he will mark a shot behind a well House in our front yard that is about six feet high. So the putt is 30 feet out over the well house the basket is not visible. The reason I point this out is he used that same shot at worlds to card a birdie at oshtemo. (A small evergreen tree instead of well house.)

BUT MOST OF ALL, KEEP IT FUN!

i've already gotten a few PMs... keep em coming (rumor or not but let me know if you are sure or if its a guess)

i think it would be interesting to have an idea what kenny/doss/feldberg/etc might get but probably more interesting to see what the 'baseline' sponsored player gets

i only say this because if company A gives 100 discs a year to a upper level sponsored guy and anything beyond that they can purchase wicked cheap... i wouldn't think that would apply to someone who is the flagship guy from company A since he can probably just ask for whatever he wants and get it.

JHBlader86
Oct 22 2008, 11:25 AM
Well I do know from talking to Dr. Rick that he gets 100 free discs a year from Innova, and Larry Bledsoe when he was on the Elite Z team said he got 150 free discs a year, but there was never any mention of any monetary matching.

When it comes to $$$ I've heard that Team Champion Star is matched what they make at NT's and Majors. Possibly A-Tiers as well.

I do know Gateway offers cash bonuses to their Pro's who place 1st or near the top at A-Tiers, NT's and Majors and cash bonuses for 1st at B and C-Tiers based on what was on the player sponsorship application.

But that could have changed since I filled mine out back in April.

As for Discraft, I dont know what they offer other than discs.

blazinpat
Oct 22 2008, 12:11 PM
Discraft offers I believe something like this for all sponsored players who place top 4 at an A-tier or Higher

1st-$500
2nd-$300
3rd-$200
4th-$100

Discs
Z-150
X-100
D-50
Reserve-25?

And I'm pretty sure there's a bonus for winning a B-tier. They also get more obviously if they win an NT or Major or Supertour event too. I also heard they get bonuses too if they are featured with discraft on in any newspaper, magazine, news, etc. I dunno to what extent everything is true but I've just heard this stuff through the grapevine.

Schusterik and McBeth are beyond "potential." Wiggins is still under the "potential" banner, although it is a bit like saying LeBron James had potential when he was a senior in high school, its about as can't-miss as it gets, but he wasn't quite elite yet. :) But my main reasoning for mentioning McBeth and Schusterik with him is that they were picked up before they became what they are right now. They displayed remarkable potential and a team snatched in and picked them up.

So it shows that continued excellence isn't the only way, you can show the promise for that excellence and get picked up by a team.

He is only 12 and has won lots of intermediate tournaments and just moved up to advanced. He's a great sport, great kid and practices his butt off. He even has a 9 hole course in his back yard that his dad built for him just to practice on!

Ironically, he and Dave have the same birthday (one year apart).

Derek Billings and Bobby Musick from CA were picked up recently, dunno if this is old news or not...Chris Lee is back on the scout team after injury.

Thanks to Innova for the continued support! I am proud to be on the top team in disc golf and wish everyone with Innova luck this year!

Thanks Manny,

Andrew had been putting more and more Discraft in the bag for the last month or so. at Worlds he had a few Innova disc as crutches (The win was the most important thing on his mind).

His 462' long drive to win 13 and under distance was with a Z Force.

By Wednesday he was all Discraft. first hole of final the final 9 he throw a surge of the tee pad. hole 9 he put a buzz on the Island green and putted out with a challenger. (of course the above is not a hole by hole he throw all Discraft from Wednesday on.)

David Jr took the news good. he said "Congradulations, How much do you want for the yellow JK putters?"

Even before He was offically picked up by Discraft (yesterday). He has already lead a few friends to the Dark Side.

Remember manny the Dark Side has the Force. (available in D and Z Plastic)

It's called the dark side of the Force! So his 462 ft. drive was actually mind enhanced to go that far! Is that fair? I knew he had to be using some sort of Jedi mind tricks! Nick says congrats to Andrew, he deserves to be sponsored too! Even though Nick is Innova sponsored, I still putt with a Buzzz! Hehehe!

In all reality, I think it's great that the major disc manufactures are realizing the potential of the youth of disc golf and are stepping up to sponsor them. They work just as hard, if not harder, to improve there games, and to maintain the level of golf that is needed to succeed. And having someone believe in them, besides just the parents, does wonders for their game, and self esteem. So who would you say is the next Jr. to be signed by a disc manufacture?

Joe Rovere from CO was recently picked up. He's only been playing 3-4 years and is already rated 1012 and will be ~1020 with the next update in a few weeks. He finished 19th in his first ever worlds (tying some unsponsored (aside from PoorboyDiscs and Phenix) mullet named Mittenz) He's got a crushing backhand, crushing thumber, and deadly putt. Not sure what level he is on the team...but should advance quickly up through the ranks. Congrats Joe!

I'm not really sure it's great to be sponsored anymore. I have heard that both Innova and Gateway will only give out discs to their team members based on how much they are selling their companies merchandise. So if you sell $200 in discs, then you'll receive $200 in discs for yourself. No more freebies apparently.

How are they supposed to prove that? By putting the sponsored players name in a coupon code or something?

I haven't heard of this (I'm sure I would have) and would be surprised if this held true for all sponsored guys.

The Gateway site doesnt even have a sponsored players page anymore. I believe this is due to all the lost revenue from players calling their sponsor and getting what they needed. I believe Innova alone lost over $250,000 in discs they gave to their players.

INNOVA team players are NEVER required to sell company merchandise in exchange for sponsorship. Placement on INNOVA teams is directly related to player performance. This includes number and type of events played, bonuses earned, player ratings and world rankings. All discs provided to INNOVA sponsored players are intended for personal use. Each year, INNOVA World Champions and Star Team members do receive personalized custom discs. While some do sell these custom discs to help raise funds to cover tournament and travel expenses, it is certainly not a requirement of sponsorship.

The amount of money INNOVA spends on sponsorship is just one portion of the annual promotional expenses. INNOVA ensures sponsored players have the equipment and support they need to perform to the best of their abilities while promoting the INNOVA brand.

well good question. I know Dave and Gateway and Ive received some disc as a "mixed sponsorship", and then i recieved some disc from gateway cause I have landed accounts for Him. I like some Gateway disc, but Ive thrown Innova my whole Game. I have lived and breathed Innova disc. I can throw Discraft and I like some of there disc. Its hard as a 997 to be so close to my 1000 goal and then start playing with new style and types of Disc! I dont want to lose any ground...and I want to keep doing whats working. But I dont want to be stubborn and miss a companies oppurtunity to propel me to a better player.
I like Gateway Disc and I can confidently use his overstable mids, Putters and still play my game, however Gateway doesnt have a full line of disc to match my shots and the type of disc Im confident with.
I obviously like Innova and can throw all Innova to keep my game progressing. But Im not sure what I have to do to become a Sponsored guy for them?
Discraft: I play with and know alot of really good Discraft guys. I think I could play and throw all Discraft and keep my game, with maybe a little re-tooling, practice time, maybe 2 mnths or so.And I would be proud to do so, Im not so stuck on a certain brand, as much as I am the Sport and my progression.
So Im not a brand snob, but I do want an oppurtunity that is going to help me.Meaning I like Gateway but Dave doesnt seem to have the resources to be able to help like I thought. (But I like Dave and Gateway and all that he does) he just really cant afford a "sponsored team" right now, So Im hoping a better option can find me while I play on Tour?
Sorry for the long answer, but Ive thought long and hard...

highest rated deaf disc golfer that is part of Deaf Disc Golf Association is our back to back National Champ Justin Ashton, rated 965, hurt himself badly onroute to his first championship in 2008. He won a B tier in Texas in Open averaging around 1010 for the tournament I believe... There might be some others out there, but not associated with DDGA... Brock Dowell Finally played in DDGA's Nationals in 2009... 5 years ago, there were only a fewwww PDGA-DDGA players, in the last 2 years the numbers have grown exponently so we should see something happening in the next few years. Just like it took PDGA a long time to grow, DDGA is growing now... See what happens in 2010, last weekend alone, one of us won the open division in an ice bowl and another got 2nd in open at a c-tier... progress...

well Disc Would be great, A disc hook up...of any sort would be a start. I can represent who Im throwing! Of course some swag, shirts and hats and shorts showing off Discraft. Other than that I don’t know what’s available? What can I do? What can Discraft do? What are my options? I would rather not sale disc, but I want to throw them and represent them at A tiers. I would hope to be an asset enough to get help to go to certain big NT and A tiers. I can travel easy but helping with entry’s or being able to hang out with and have the support of the discraft guys would be cool?

Im 997 and I hope with My 4 A tiers Im about to hit My goal is to get USDGC qualified and bring rating over 1000+. I really feel this is my year.

Thanks dgdave, Kent is my advisor for DDGA, I'm the President now, Kent stepped down at the 2009 National Championship so he could focus more on his personal love for the game of Disc Golf. Kent and I have worked together for years now as I was his VP and TD for 2 years. Kent deserves the DGA sponsorship and we look to build on that since that is basically the first time a disc manufactuer has made the step towards the DDGA market...
FYI, Robert Huizar of New Mexico probably made one of the biggest jumps all weekend long at the Memorial in MA1, jumped 51 spots on the last day for the big "amateur" payout mini basket in 12th place, sick jump.

What about being picked up by an Internet Store? does that happen? can that Happen? I think that would be cool to represent a store so I could throw what I wanted and still be sponsored? I know that was the whole philosophy behind Dave and Gateway Sponsoring mixed bag was, he's trying to open the thinking to sponsorships outside of the "main stream" idea of it having to be a certain disc company?

I'm sponsored by PoorBoyDiscs.com which hooks me up with free PBD merchandise and I get wholesale prices on discs and some free discs occasionally. It's pretty good to be sponsored by a vendor because I can throw what I want, and they help sponsor many tournaments going in my area, and some tournaments for my friends and their clubs.

I'd say if you can get a chance to get a vendor to sponsor you take it. But apparently being a sponsored Intermediate player, most people in my division think I need to move up and stop "bagging." To them sponsorship means the disc golf gods have granted you magical skills to be a top player haha.

My conditions are simply represent my sponsor through advertising by what I wear, handing out cards, some merchandise, gift certificates, sponsoring tournaments, and having good character. I regularly compare pricing from PBD to Sun King and Dynamic Discs, and tell them how we have better pricing. I'm not bound to a sales quota, but I was talking to Holly, the owner of PBD, yesterday and he said the company is really growing, and all the advertisement is paying off and they're sending me a bunch of PBD merchandise and discs.

Exczar, Deafness is a bigger disability than you realize.

Deaf Disc Golf has been around for quite some time now.
We are now entering our 12th annual Deaf National disc golf championship.
There are at least 1,000 casual Deaf disc golfers and about 100-200 competitors.
We have a huge grapevine that stretches nationwide. Imagine the potential exposure.

However, we may appear immature at times or even struggle with the language barrier.

This I suspect is the hardest knock on Deaf disc golfers. Even with the advancement of technology, only 10% of the people with hearing loss will be able to use the forums on equal footing due to language requirements. I know I (and snap7times) have been asked at times to help mediate or facilitate due to the language.

It may not help that we deal with equilibrium issues in between our two defunct ears.
Talk about holy OAT throws ;-)

After 12 years, I note about 30 players who are above a 900 rating and about 5 who are above a 950 rating with severe sensioneural hearing loss.

To date, only 1 disc company, DGA, has sponsored a Deaf disc golfer. Kudos to them for recognizing the potential marketing opportunity.

Notables:
Iron Lion has recognized a Deaf disc golfer
Gorilla-boy has recognized a Deaf disc golfer
Paragon has recognized a Deaf disc golfer
A deaf disc golfer has tried running for PDGA Board.
For the first time, a disc golf dvd was subtitled (2011 pdga pro worlds)
Unfortunately, 2012 am worlds was not subtitled. the jury's out for 2012 pro worlds.

Disability is a challenge. The majority of the world takes communication for granted.
Very few realize how much of communication is actually a privilege and how we struggle day in day out for accessibility.
