View Full Version : Coming to the Area...

Jun 06 2005, 01:19 AM
Hello people of NC.. I am coming out there the weekend over the 4th of July and was wondering what courses I needed to play.. I will be in the Durham area and Cornwallis Road Park would be the closest to play... Is there any courses in the area that I will need to hit? Just curious what you think on the best courses to play in the area.. Meeting some of the girlfriends folks.. and her brother-in-law doesnt play at all.. And I will be bringing him out.. Trying to get another one addicted.. Thanks for the info...

All of them!
To be more specific, you have two here in Raleigh and two in Durham with several more in the surrounding area. I would try and hit Valley Springs (northern Durham) and Cedar Hills (northern Raleigh). I hear Buckhorn (south of Ral/Dur on Rt 1) is cool, 6 holes with water hazards (4 throw overs), but I haven't been there yet myself. There are so many, but of the 2 in Durham and 2 in Raleigh my pick is the two I mentioned. They are the longest and most challenging of the 4. Someone else will have to mention the others around here.

You can get all the 411 on the local courses at Raleigh Area Disc League's (http://www.radl.biz) website. Lower left of page.

Other courses to consider:

UNC Outdoor Education Center in Chapel Hill (about 10 min from Cornwallis Rd);

Cedarock and Wellspring in Burlington (two courses in same park, 20 holes and 18 holes, respectively; about 40 min. from Durham);

O. T. Sloan in Sanford (about 30 min. from Durham)

Zebulon Community Park in Zebulon (about 45 min from Durham)

I don't think he wants me there?

I so I guess Cornwallis from what i have been reading.. Is a pretty easy course.. Pretty short.. everything about 250'.. Would it be great to introduce a local to the game? Since a newcomer to the sport would be with me.. Or would valley springs be ok to take a beginner to play.. Without it being frustrating for him..

Cornwallis is a good course fo beginners to develop their game, but it is not particularlysuited to introducing newcomers to the game since the fairways are relatively narrow, most have obstacles in the fairway, and most fairways are lined with trees and/or schule, so accuracy is very much at a premium. IMO, Kentwood (Raleigh), which is, for the most part, wide open, would be a better place to introduce a newcomer to disc golf.

Felix has a good point, but since you'll be near Cornwallis and you seem to want to choose between Valley and Cornwallis, I'd go with Cornwallis. Valley is a little longer and tougher, even from the short pads.

On the other hand, it's a little easier to navigate your way through Valley if you keep in mind there are 3 pads for a lot of the holes. Cornwallis, though short and pretty straightforward, can get a little tricky and most first-timers end up inadvertently skipping some holes out there. You should get a local to take you around or at least point the way.

For what it's worth, I, a female, started at Cornwallis and found it just challenging enough to keep me wanting to go back out there. The first time i played Valley, I thought it was a bit too tough for me at that point. Kentwood in Raleigh would be better, but if you'd rather stay in Durham then take the guy to Cornwallis (though please don't think that Cornwallis resembles all of our courses here!)

How far is burlington from Durham??

Jun 07 2005, 01:58 PM
I was looking at kentwood on the internet.. I love the hole by hole feature.. It does look pretty interesting.. I will have to get thier address again.. And look up how far it is where i will be.. maybe I can hit a couple of courses while i am there.. Kentwood is one i am considering..

Bear in mind that Kentwood is a stone's throw from NC State's campus, and it is hands down the most recreationally played disc golf course in the Triangle. Plan your trip wisely or bring a few extra measures of patience with you.

Oh, and the Burlington courses are a good 45 mins from Durham.

Depending on traffic... But Most Definitely worth the trip, IMHO. Plus, Burlington has two courses right there together.

Valley Springs shouldn't be ruled out either.

Peace

Kentwood is about 25 miles from Cornwallis. Unless you get caught in traffic, you should be able to get there in 20-30 min from the East side of Durham, 30-45 min. from the West side.

As a warning, traffic is bad on Interstate 40 (I40) coming from Durham to Raleigh from about 4:15-6:30 pm Monday through Friday. What should take you 40 minutes (Cornwallis to Kentwood) will take you at least 1:40 minutes during rush hour traffic.
And if you can get a few hours to yourself, Buckhorn is one of the three top courses in the state. It is not beginner friendly, but it is a nice walk in the woods for some one to tag along.

Buckhorn is a great course...just bring the heavy-duty bug spray on account of ticks, and something to swat the deer flies. Otherwise, a summertime visit may be less-than-pleasant.

If you're introducing a beginner to the game, I'd recommend Kentwood, Cornwallis, Cedar Hills, and Valley Springs in that order (order of choice for beginners, not order of play), but you might want to make sure your padawan doesn't get delusions of grandeur at Cedar #7 and that you aren't playing the Gold positions, which are slightly harder and in a couple of cases considerably less sane.

I live three minutes from Kentwood and my brother in law lives right smack in the middle between Valley Springs and Cornwallis, probably about five minutes from each. Lookin' fer company? :D(Actually probably kidding, I rather expect to be in the aforementioned tournament at Zebulon. However, if you weren't playing those two days, we might see you out there.)

Kentwood in Raleigh is a great beginner course. It is short and primarily wide open, although it does get VERY congested in the afternoons, so you may have to look out for stray discs than can knock you in the head. If you’re searching for more of a challenge, Buckhorn in New Hill is a wooded, yet serene course, however you shouldn’t have your hopes up of walking away with a low score after playing it once. I’d also recommend Cedar Hills in Raleigh. It may be a wooded, hilly course but it is certainly worth playing.

If you tell me when you’re going to be in town, I’d be glad to give you my number and I’ll personally show you around whatever course you decide on. I’m far from being the best player out there, but I do know the area courses very well, and besides, I always love showing players from other areas around.

That sounds pretty good.. I think there is a tournament in Zebulon? during my stay there.. I will be there from July 2 until 5th.. I leave that morning.. So i am looking to play the 3rd or 4th.. I am looking at the courses on the Raleigh site.. And trying to get a good idea of what courses i want to play..
