View Full Version : Has Anyone Else Noticed....?

May 16 2005, 03:45 PM
Has anyone else detected a HUGE grammatical gaffe on the tee box sign for hole number 7 at Cedar Hills?

The first person to tell me what the error is will win a brand new DX Roc.

"The pond is covered with a poisonsous algae" is incorrect.

Singlular form of algae is alga.

:D

Haven't seen the actual sign, but how about correct spelling of "poisonous". :)

May 16 2005, 04:32 PM
The sign I'm speaking of is the one with the little map of the hole and some remarks at the bottom under the drawing, NOT the warning signs.

A make or break hole, short of the basket leaves yourself struggling for four and one disc less in the bag, across the water and your smiling with a 2.

Where do I start?...
The run on sentences...
The commas in the wrong places...
Yourself rather that you...
etc.

Do I win?

I was actually talking about the use of "your" instead of "you're" as in "you're smiling". But, I'll call you the winner. When do you want your disc?

If you don't think you earned the grand prize, you don't have to accept it.

"The pond is covered with a poisonsous algae" is incorrect.

Singlular form of algae is alga.

:D

Actually, though plural in form, "algae," in this particular context, is a collective noun (i.e. a noun that designates a group as a whole) since it refers to a species of algae as a whole rather than to an individual organism or to several species of photosynthetic protists. (Other common examples of collective nouns include media, family, audience, team, congregation, enemy.)

In American usage, a collective noun takes a singular verb when it refers to the collection considered as a whole, e.g. "The family was united on this question"; "The media is biased"; "The enemy is suing for peace"[/i]; it takes a plural verb when it refers to the members of the group considered as individuals, [/i]The family are always fighting among themselves; The media are divided over whether to honor the proposed news blackout; The enemy were showing up in groups of three or four to turn in their weapons."[/i] [N.B.: in British usage, collective nouns take a singular verb regardless of the referent.] Thus, "The pond is covered with a poisonous algae"—though zoologically suspect (N. Fowleri being a species of amoeba, and therefore a heterotrophic protist, rather than an alga, which are autotrophic protists)—is grammatically correct. :D:D:D

May 17 2005, 01:56 AM
so are u going to fix this problem or problems chuck?

May 17 2005, 02:36 AM
I'll be glad to fix it or pay to have it fixed. All I need are some ideas to go about doing so. The only thing I can think of is to have a new sign made, and I haven't a clue where to go to have that done.

I didn't mean to insult anyone and I didn't mean to come off as an unappreciative jerk. I work long hours and I usually only have enough spare time to PLAY disc golf instead of working on the course, although if I can find out the date of the next work day early enough, I should be able to make some free time.

I am of the opinion that in addition to paying the minimal fee to join RADL, all the disc golfers who patronize the local courses should also put in some sort of effort, whether it is physical labor or financial contributions, into making them better courses. I feel that these are OUR golf courses and OUR responsibility to maintain and improve them.

Yeah, thats a great point. I graduated with a 3.39 in just 4 years while doing extra cirucular activities such as MArching Band, Basketball Pep Band, writing for the campus newspapers, going to meetings involving the disc golf courses, played in over 40 PDGA events, ran a PDGA event and helped build a new course in town.

If you're going to get nit-picky, then that period should be inside the quotes, such as: "University." Give the kid a break. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Only in the US, and even then, only if following the MLA or APA manual or style; in Canada, Great Britain, and the IPA and SSHRC manuals of style, punctuation marks go outside the quotation marks unless the punctuation is part of the quotation itself. :p :p :p

Mr. Almighty Judge of Topics,

Since nobody is forcing you to click on here and read the posts, wouldn't it be more logical to simply ignore the "dumb topic" instead of adding two posts of your own?

I must apologize. I lumped all of you into one category and I never should have done that. I now know that not everyone possesses a sense of humor and some even take offense to this sort of thing. I feel terrible. Not for pointing out the blatant error made using our native language, but for those who become uptight when corrected. Again, I'm sorry. I guess these sorts of things don't matter as much to some as they do to others.
