Here is what it says in the Spring/Summer 2005 Stoughton Parks & Rec Guide.

"Kiwani’s Disc Golf Course
Stoughton’s Amundson Park is the home of the new Kiwanis Disc Golf Course. Set to open this spring, the course features nine challenging wooded holes set against prairies, the Yahara River and our bike/walk trail. The course will expand to 18 holes in the near future. There is no fee to play. Just keep the grounds clean and enjoy.

Discs will be available at the Recreation Department for rental."

the rec guide is online here (http://www.stoughtonrec.com/Sto.%20Rec%202005.pdf)

I wonder when it will get added to the course directory and to the DiscOver Wisc Map (http://www.discoverwisc.com/wisconsin-map.htm) ?

I have been working with the parks and recreation department since last year. We are scheduling for an 'official grand opening' on June 11th. Things are moving along very well. They have done at TON of work out there and I really hope everyone treats this new city and course with respect. If it goes well, other courses will follow I'm sure.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Terry@prodiscgolfer.com

Is the Grand Opening still set for this weekend? What kind of event is it going to be?

Has anyone already played this course and if so what did you think?

I'm looking for area courses that I can take some of the kids I mentor throughout the summer.

I don't believe it is open yet. We actually checked it out the other weekend and the pins weren't in yet. Talked with Terry Miller last week and as far as he knew the grand opening is still tomorrow I believe. Looks like it's going to be fairly wooded from what I saw(at least the first few holes) and the rough might be pretty think unless they cleared some of it out. Looks like a fun course though. Let me know if you go and what you think.

STOUGHTON --

The grand opening will feature an opening ceremony at 11 a.m., complete with a ribbon-cutting and ceremonial first disc toss. A complimentary light lunch will be served afterwards and foursomes can play disc golf for the afternoon.

?This park was constructed as a joint project between the Kiwanis Club of Stoughton and the City of Stoughton,? said Kiwanis President Sarah Horton. ?The course is built on a city park and was constructed by volunteer labor. Most of the labor was provided by the Kiwanis Club, but many city residents also pitched in. It has taken 11 months to plan and construct this course.?

The course will be free to the public just like any other city park, said Horton.

The course was constructed on city parkland located between the Yahara River and the Amundson Park EPA Superfund site. The Superfund site sits on a former city landfill; the landfill was covered with a clay cap in the late 1990?s and was surrounded by a fence. The Superfund site remains off limits to the public at present, although city officials are talking with EPA about possibly allowing ?passive? use of the grounds in the future.

Horton said the disc course currently includes nine holes, with the option to add nine more at a future date. She said the course was designed by consultant Terry Miller. Miller also works for Inova, a disc golf supply company near Milwaukee which also supplied the metal elevated baskets for the course. The baskets were being installed at the course this week.

The disc golf facility ?will be the first park of its kind in Stoughton, and one of only a few in Dane County. The new course in Stoughton will put Wisconsin at over 70 courses statewide. Dane County currently has three parks, so the park in Stoughton will be a great service both to the town and to the county,? said Horton.

Disc Golf is one of America?s fastest growing sports in America and also in Wisconsin. The sport was developed in 1975 and there is now a Professional Disc Golf Association. Disc golf is a fun and exciting sport played similarly to its ball and club relative. Players throw specially designed discs at elevated baskets and try to get the lowest score. Disc golf can be played by one or more players of any age and ability.

?Golfers will be able to take in the natural beauty of one of Stoughton?s finest parks nestled on the shores of the Yahara River while playing this challenging course,? she said.

Of special interest is the osprey nest visible from the end of hole number four.

Members of the public can contact Sarah Horton at 877- 4732 with any questions or to reserve a spot in a foursome. Commemorative discs will be available for sale at the grand opening.

Went out and played the course for the first time today. Very nice 9 hole course. The rough is pretty severe but that will improve with time. You want to stick to the fairways if at all possible. But a nice more technical course that rewards for accuracy more so than power. Will definitely go again.

I agree with you. The rough is crazy, I'm glad I didn't wear shorts, the thisles in the prairie parts looked wicked glad I didn't end up in there. Very nice short course, leave the bags in the car and take a putter and Midrange. I'll definitly play it again and I hope the rough lightens up a bit.

I was just wondering if anyone knows how the course survived the Tornado? It seems to me the course was in the area most damaged by the Tornado, is this true?

I know in the grand scheme of it all it really doesn't matter, especially with all the other things residents of Stoughton are dealing with. But if the course took a hit and needs some repairs, maybe some of us could set up a time to get the course back up and running.

Just a thought

I haven't heard of or seen any damage at the course in stoughton, then again I have never been to or played the course. If I had to guess I would think that the course probably sustained some damage. As you refered to though, that is probably the least of the concerns for the people of stoughton as they try and pick up the pieces from the tragic situation there. Two friends of mine lost virtually everything in the twister, includuing most of their own private disc golf course. So personaly, my main concern is getting them back on their feet and helping them get back to as normal as possible. I'm sure that if the course is in bad shape, it will be taken care of when it is time.

I'm from the Milwaukee area, and last weekend went to Hiestand and Elver parks. Didn't know there was a new course in Stoughton. Does anyone know where to go to get more information like directions? It's not listed in the DiscOver Wisconsin site yet and I'm quite interested.

PS. Hiestand Park was a Beautiful course, definately one of my Favorites. Elver was decent but no as impressive as many made it sound.

I was thinking that the last time I was at the course it was full of Middle school age kids and it would be a shame for them not to be able to play DG on their new course. While the cleanup for those hit by the tornado is going to be ongoing for some time, their are others in the community who may need a place to calm their nerves and unwind after a stressful day. Plus the kids in the area should have a fun and safe place to go and play some DG and unwind.

I'll stop by there tommorow and see what shape the course is in and will post my findings here.

Hey Kip, I didn't mean to make it sound as if the course was not important, because it is. I was just speaking from a personal standpoint of my friends being at a serious detrement. I am going to attempt to go to the stoughton course this week to see if there is anything that is needed. I will probably bring my chainsaw and other landscaping equipment. I first have to contact the stoughton parks dept. to make sure that they would allow us to use power tools on the course. Thanks for your concern and I hope that we can help. Get back to me if you know of anything else.

The course didn't recieve any damage that I could see, it is just in need of some upkeep, ie mowing, loping and weedwacking.

I don't think I have ever been to a course were I have seen so many people lose discs and then find other discs to replace the ones they lost.

The rough is still wicked, thigh high thistles will keep you from looking for your discs in some of the rough if you have shorts on.
