View Full Version : Daryl Johnson Injured
Mar 21 2005, 11:22 AM
For those of you that do not know Daryl Johnson (OKC LEGEND and Driving Force) Has shattered his hip. Daryl was helping a neighbor trim some trees and was hit by a tree and thrown from a ladder. He is currently at Baptist Hospital in OKC Room 684. He plans to move to University Med Center on Tuesday. There are only 2 surgeons in Oklahoma that perform the procedure he is needing to try to reconstruct his hip. If that does not work he will have to have an artificial hip implanted. Either way it will be months in the hospital, followed by months of rehab. :(
Please keep Daryl and his family in your thoughts and prayers during what we all know will be a very tough time.

I guess I won't be getting my Daryl Johnson bear hug at Herington in a couple of weeks!
Dang! Let him know that we're thinking of him.

The Hero family wishes you a complete and speedy recovery. Thanks for always supporting the sport we love....even if you have to cross the Red River. What would a TX or OK tournament be without a Daryl Johnson "Ring of Fire?"
Get well soon my friend.
Mar 21 2005, 03:28 PM
Daryl, hope you have successful recovery. Your attitude and sportsmanship on and off of the course is a model for every player.

... and thankx to Joe Rotan for hooking him up with a PC and access to the WorldWideWeb ...
... Daryl , you gotta know that our thoughts and best wishes are with you ... keep your grade-A attitude & optimism with you during your heal-up & re-hab period ... once your feeling chipper enough in the future to "walk-the-park" (like a woodpecker) , give me a shout ... I'd be proud to caddie for you ...
... get well soon ...

Ouch DJ, why you go and do a thing like that.
Speedy recovery, I will see you next time I come to OKC, cos I figure it may be a while before you make it down here again.
It was good seeing you at Tayloe's Memorial Roast.
Mar 21 2005, 04:38 PM
Sorry to hear the news brother. You were the light that help me into the game of Discgolf. You guided many into the game of discgolf.
You created a great course,Dolese that now is used by so many new players and kids( the future disgolfers ).
Brother Darly created and ran the greatest club in OKC that grew as each year past until he steped down.
Now its our turn to help our father Daryl Johnson . Lets all pray for a fast and successful recovery. The power of God is almighty and the powere of us all is mighty. Together and team efforts we all can get Daryl through this ...
Father Daryl Johnson, I wish and pray for you for a speedy recovery
Mar 21 2005, 04:57 PM
What a shock to hear this! You know I will really miss seeing you in the coming months. Please give me a call when you feel up to it so Dee and I can come by for a visit. You know if there is ANYTHING, do not hesitate!!
Just so any of you that don't know or for those of you who might have heard of Daryl, he is the greatest amassador disc golf could have!!!! Daryl is also one of the greatest people anyone could have around period!!! I would venture to say that even in this, there will still be a smile on his face and encouraging words for all those he comes in contact with.
We love you Brother!!!! Our prayers will be with you!!!
Mar 21 2005, 05:29 PM
WOW!!!!.......hope you get better soon DJ........
Mar 21 2005, 07:40 PM
Daryl, hang in there.
I will always remember your hospitality you showed when I played in a OKC tourney you ran.
You have a great family.
Remember take things one step at a time and you will always get there.
Wishing you only the best of the best.
My prayers for you, your family, and wisdom for Doctor's.
Mar 21 2005, 07:53 PM
Thanks for getting this started Joe..I didn't have time at work.
Daryl is the reason I play golf the way I do. It is always about fun and friends first, showing a new golfer around and a postive influence on the course.
I also want to Thank Baldie for giving me a quick call as soon as he heard what had happened. I talked to DJ for about 10 minutes last night and he was in about as good of sprits as he could be. They may even need to take him to DFW to get his surgery done.
I wish you a speedy recovery my friend and can't wait to walk/shoot Dolese with you again in the soon future.
You will be missed on the greens, but in all of our hearts!
Mar 21 2005, 09:41 PM
I first met Daryl at PPO last year when he was with Father Dave, Richard, and Conrad and even though I only talked to him for an hour he was one of the most interesting guys i've met and I wish him a speedy recovery.
Mar 21 2005, 10:17 PM
I hope you recover soon Daryl. I don't know you very well but have heard only great things about you. I did play a round with you at Dolese a couple of years ago and enjoyed your company. I always enjoy playing your course (Dolese).
Terrill and I just returned home from a visit to the hospital to see Daryl.
Daryl has been moved to OU Medical Center, Everett Tower, 10th Floor, Room 110 (it actually says 10110) on the door.
We only was able to see Daryl for a brief moment as he was being taken down for a cat scan.
We did stay and visit with Barb (his wife). Barb says he is in good spirits and is not in much pain at this time. He is only in pain when he tries to move. They are to meet with the doctor tomorrow to schedule the surgery.
Once the surgery has been scheduled Daryl will be totally out of it for up to two weeks. Barb asked for no visitors after the surgery as Daryl will not be aware of who or what is going on. Barb will update us when Daryl will see visitors. Cards and letters and your continued support on the discussion board is greatly appreciated.
Although Daryl does not have access to a computer at this time, these messages are being printed for him to read at the hospital.
We will continue to keep you posted.
We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, DJ.
Mar 21 2005, 10:24 PM
We may have a checkered past at times.. but
THANK YOU PASKE's...
I wish I could be there, but he knows that....
Barb...keep rubbing that man down...he muscles are old w/o all the meat in them :DDarn Vegetarians :o
Seriously, the faster he can move again, the quicker we can see him on the course he loves and dedicates his time to...
GO DJ - you have a strong family behind you!!!
Mar 21 2005, 10:55 PM
I just talk with DJ and he told the nurse he did a full gainor with a double twist before he realized there was no water in the pool....she was buying it until she heard the laughter....still in great spirits.
Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday March 22. He told me he WAS going to be out trying to play again by October!!! That is a quick recovery!!! Hip is broken in 3 places and they will put it back together with pins and plates.
We will keep the prayers going, not only for the family, but for the Doctors and Nurses that will be doing the work.
BTW, Here's the real story about what happened... he jumped off a ladder with a chainsaw in hand trying to cut down a branch that snagged his disc and....................or not!!
Mar 21 2005, 11:13 PM
That is true...Continue to print the posts out. The Hospital will not allow wireless internet where he is at...
You can send well wishes via the board or my PM Box or either of the Paskes boxes. We will see that he gets them.
I am sure Daryl is in good spirits, When we spoke earlier today he not only knew his roommates history, ailment and prognossis (yes, twisted just used that big word)He was Rootin' for the guy!!! :DI bet he and his next roommate are putting in the hall before long!!! :D
Mar 21 2005, 11:28 PM
If he is coming back in October that can only mean one thing ( maybe 2 - TFO)...OCTOBERFRIZ.!!!
I found this of DJ at the Friz 2 years ago..only he would have a fresh salad during the mud and flood :D
Mar 22 2005, 01:05 AM
Just talked with Mrs.J... She says she will call me to update tommorrow. Stay Tuned...
Mar 22 2005, 10:24 AM
D.J. !!!!!!!! our prayers are for you this day
DJ will be fine, HE'S TOO TOUGH of an OKIE to let a little ole busted hip keep him from coming back out.
Good luck with the rehab. I know DJ has been a PROS, pro forever, He'll be back and probably better than ever. ;)
Mar 22 2005, 10:57 AM
Hang in there Daryl. Get some rest and come back stronger than ever. :)
Mar 22 2005, 11:02 AM
Hey Daryl. It's been a long time since you put me up and showed me the courses in your area on one of my earliest road trips. Will Rogers is still one of my favorite fun courses. Take care and get back in gear soon.
Mar 22 2005, 11:24 AM
Kat and I met DJ at Wichita Falls last year. Sad to hear something like this happen to him, but somehow I'm not surprised he's keeping his sense of humor through it. Can't believe he didn't stick the landing! :)
We'll keep him in our thoughts. Here's to a speedy and full recovery!!!
Mar 22 2005, 12:31 PM
Sounds like we've got a strong man with TONS of passion and support! That is a powerful combo for recovery! GO DARYL! :)
Mar 22 2005, 02:41 PM
I just got off the phone with DJs wife. She says they will operate tommorrow and he will be in the hospital for 10 days (knowing Daryl he will whittle that to 5 or 6) Then he will go home for rehab. They anticipate he will have a long rehab since they are trying to save his hip, rather than "throw in a plasti one" He is in good spirits but a bunch of pain from being moved yesterday. :( He is geting your posts read to him by his wife and friends so keep em coming. The call ended with a typical DJ analysis... Barb said "We will be at the Friz, He will just need a cane!" :D:D:D
Mar 22 2005, 02:46 PM
Thanks for the updates guys.
I am sure Daryl will make the Friz, somehow :D
Shoot, it took me moving my tournament to get him to come back to Carrollton. (Carrollton Open use to be the 2nd weekend of October for several years)
Mar 22 2005, 03:32 PM
ahh..but we did get him there Bryan :D
Just talked to him a second ago and he had a room full of people he was entertaining...telling the staff what type of salad he wanted and cracking jokes...
However long they say it will take to be back...I bet he cuts alot of time off that...
Keep Strong DJ!!!
Mar 22 2005, 06:22 PM
Daryl, get well and stay strong, bro. You're a good man.
Stay away from Murphy though. He tried to break my hip once by talking me into a drunken foot race. I'm sure there's some security camera footage to prove it...somewhere. ;)
If only that Hooters would've served something other than 3.2 beer, that whole ugly incident may have been avoided. :)
Get well soon man.
Terrill and I visited Daryl last night.
His surgery will take place today at Noon. He will be in surgery for 4-6 hours. They will cut him from the front and may also have to cut him from the back in order to get him fixed up.
Let's continue to keep Daryl in our thoughts and prayers.
We want to see him back out on the course soon.
Mar 23 2005, 12:34 PM
Go Daryl Johnson,
Hes being tough about his surgery. Lets all pray for a fast and great recovery. Its got to be scary going into surgery.
Mar 23 2005, 04:48 PM
Am I the only one here that has an image of a crazy man (that would be Daryl :D) running amok on a golf cart at this years Friz???
Mar 23 2005, 10:13 PM
Just got off the phone with Barbie(Daryls good side). Its good news and spread the news. Daryl surgery went wonderful. Doc was thinking it would take 4 to 6 hours. It only took 3 hours and did not need to put a stainless steel plate attached to his hip. Doc only had to put screws attaching the broken parts among his outter hip bone that had the fractures. Barb said hes going to be out for a couple of days and dont be calling him until Friday afternoon at the earliest. Doc was really impressed by his health and should have a speedy recovery.....................
Keep on the posting and Monday when Barb and I return back from ground work at Duncan , we'll bring the update posts to Daryl
Thanks for your support to Father Daryl Johnson. Keep those prayers going
Mar 23 2005, 10:22 PM
That's my veggie...GO DJ...
I told you he would knock time off his recovery schedule..now I just have to get to OKC to push him around in the KART (wheelchair) :D
Dolese is pretty level, but I might need some help getting you up and down #4 and #5 :D
Good news my brother...talk to you soon!!!!
Mar 24 2005, 10:16 AM
That is great news that everything went well. Hope everything here on out is flawless. Your in our thoughts Daryl.
Mar 24 2005, 11:29 AM
... good things & good Karma catch up with good people ... :) ... man , them vegetarians : they're built pretty solid inside & out ! ...
Barb called this evening with an update on Daryl. Daryl had a pretty hard day today. Had a lot of pain this morning, but was doing better this afternoon and evening.
Barb anticipates that the Daryl may be able to take some calls tomorrow afternoon and evening, it will all depend on how his day goes tomorrow.
He is only scheduled at this time to see the doctor and physical therapist tomorrow.
Continue to keep Daryl in your thoughts and prayers.
Daryl, John Green here. Whats up buddy? man what a bummer!!! Well as I sit here thinking of the many years I have known you everything that I think of is a good thought!!! Mar 25 2005, 11:15 AM
Yep, He called here too. He sounded like Good Ol Daryl! He was in great spirits and thankful we have kept him in our thoughts. Pretty amazing dude DJ is.
Mar 25 2005, 11:21 AM
Very good to hear the surgery was a success and he is recovering.
From Greg Lynn:
He seems to be doing a little better today!
His Spirits are up. But he is still in a good deal of pain.
He will be transferred to the Jim Thorp Rehabilitation Center at Baptist Hospital, this afternoon.
I'll keep you posted as to where he is at in the center, as well as contact information when I have that information.
Hang in there Daryl, you'll be up and at em before you know it :)
Mar 28 2005, 07:33 PM
He was telling me today he would be home in 1-2 weeks...way ahead of the earlier guesses..I think Paul is taking our Bonsai up there tonight for him...
he can't get hurt trimming that - atleast not too bad :D
Mar 29 2005, 12:58 PM
That is correct, sir, I did take the bonsai up there last night, and some more books as well. Daryl says he should be out of the "cell" in a week and a half to two weeks, then will finish his recovery in the comfort of his own abode. I know he's looking forward to getting out of the direct care of a doctor, and cannot blame him for that. Also, wanted to mention I went up last week to visit Daryl and Barb, the evening before the surgery. Daryl was having a rough time of it, so I left his room after saying 'hello' then spent the next hour and a half speaking with Dale Johnson, Daryl's dad. Man, what a great guy....what a great family. After meeting his father I can honestly see where and from whom Daryl gets his great personality, his compassion for others, his wit, his intelligence...man, I could go on and on. I haven't met a Johnson yet that I didn't like! No, wait...that sounds bad. Lemme rephrase--every member of Daryl's family I've come into contact with has been gracious, kind, caring, and appreciative of the attention he's received from his friends in the disc golf community. If you haven't yet had the opportunity to express to Daryl your thanks for the work he's done in this town, for this community, please do so, either by visiting him or via this board. I think a lot of the time people mention to him they love his golf course, but there's so much more Daryl has done for disc golf in OKC, and disc golf in general. In time of need, I have no doubt Daryl would be there for each of us. Please do what you can to let him know you'll be there for him as well.
Apr 01 2005, 01:20 AM
He will return... :D
Apr 01 2005, 10:31 AM
Yummy......i spy a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. That's a funny hat as well. A sheet stain.....LMAO.
Get well soon Daryl!
Apr 01 2005, 11:00 AM
:cool:Too Funny DJ. We will miss you in Duncan this weekend. Look forward to seeing you soon. :D
Apr 01 2005, 12:00 PM
Holy Mackerel! I can't wait to see the look on my boss's face when he sees that I've saved that pic on my work computer. Man, I love Daryl........
Apr 06 2005, 06:38 PM
Father Johnson has been released from Baptist Medical Center and is rolling around at his own house again. He will still be in the chair for a bit, but his rate of recovery is so fast and amazing his doctors can't believe it.
Apr 07 2005, 12:50 AM
he is just getting ready for the Octoberfriz
Apr 07 2005, 02:21 AM
You know that is a fact...Harvey would make him roll the whole way if that is what it took :D
Continued thoughts to you my friend...keep the bonsai alive
Apr 10 2005, 02:16 AM
I want to thank everyone for all the well wishin and support. It was very traumatic to have my life taken from me and to be under the "care" of a doctor, my second fear next to jail. I am a lucky man to have a good, loving woman to care for me at this time of total disability. All the love from my disc golf friends is overwhelming and it gives me incentive to remain a part of that wonderful fellowship. I want to thank Gregg Lynn for calling every day and being a mother hen. Adam Murphy for defining unconditional friendship. Paul DeJulius for sharing and caring. Joe Rotan for all the love. Thanks to Terrill and Barb Paske, Cameron K and Jack L, Cameron Swartz and Mike Holden, Tom and Dee Lowry, John Green, Wayne Forest, and all the other disc golfers that have well wished me a speedy recovery. I hope to be golfin again before the Twisted Flyer in October. Peace in your world, Daryl
Apr 13 2005, 12:58 PM
GOOD TO HEAR MAN!
The power of prayer has done it again
Apr 13 2005, 01:06 PM
I think we're all just glad you're ok, Daryl. I hope to see you soon, as I'm sure we all do. Take care of the bansai, READ A BOOK, and listen to the boss (Barb). Do all those things you always hoped you could do if you could get the time off work...all the things you can do while sitting on your *****, of course! Pablo
WOOOOO HOOO DJ is out of prison ooooooorrrrr the hospital.

Apr 13 2005, 01:51 PM

Apr 13 2005, 02:52 PM
Too bad you had to have a fall to get on the message board, but thanks for the kind words. I am still amazed at the speed your recovery is taking. I bet you are golfing again before the TFO in Otober.
Take care of that little tree and pet the dog for me. Talk to you soon friend!
Apr 13 2005, 04:12 PM
Hmm...maybe we all should eat more vegetables... :)
Great to hear from you Darryl and glad to hear the recovery is going better than projected!
