And the answer to the very next question is Stable-Icers (http://www.llbean.com/products/mens/23338/images/23338.jpg)! There are cheaper sources than LL Bean but I found theirs first.

*****************************

Ice cleats are great!! I wore through several pairs of Stabilicers before I found a cheaper and more effective way to create ice cleats.

Stabilicers are sturdy strap-on soles that have sheet metal screws imbedded in them. If you take a pair of boots with thick, hard rubber soles you can screw 1/2 inch sheet metals screws directly into them. With a power drill this can be done in about 5 minutes at a cost of a few bucks.

The screws will wear down or fall out of Stabilicers or homemade boots so buy a supply of them replace the screws as needed.

I find that I clearly prefer the homemade boots. The Stabilicers use a stap-on webbing that looks like high tech sandals. It is a pain to get them on just right (they need to be very tightly stapped on) and at times they need to be adjusted when they come loose or a stick or debris gets caught in the webbing. The boots are good to go once you put them on, are lighter and need no adjustments.

With fresh ice cleats (new screws) you can play disc golf on a frozen lake or on iced-over tee pads. For those of us who drive predominately forehand, our form looks similar to a baseball pitcher throwing a sidearm or submarine pitch. If our plant foot slips out we do the face plant. In slippery conditions, the only way I avoid face planting is by wearing ice cleats. I played for years before finding effective ice cleats and regularly found myself lying in the snow and asking my group if they saw where my drive went. At least I learned to fall properly ( on the way down start rolling and you will lose a lot less skin)

Mark Ellis using power tools? Thought I'd heard of everything....

As long as it lasts, the tee pads on the Original at Hudson Mills are clear and in great shape, both front and back. It was a team effort to get them clear and I can't remember everyone's name, or I'd start listing folks.

With some warmer weather expected this week, the snow-pack should be in great shape by next weekend for some ice-aided skippers and the occasional mongo Norelco. Woo Hoo!

I dont know what your smoking but 70 and sunny could NEVER get old.

Snow is cool but only if you can travel to it and then leave it behind. Driving in the snow and shoveling it SUCKS and i would LOVE to never see it again unless i went on a trip to where the snow was.

As of yesterday noon, Damon and two guys I'd never met before (Nate and Joe) were heading out to play the Original and shovel as they went.

Being that it was mid-storm, I couldn't see shoveling just yet and ended up playing the Monster shorts, off to the side mostly.

Great snow condition and not a boot print anywhere in sight.

Jan 26 2005, 08:23 PM
Oh yea, they were all clean when we got through with them, but that was in the middle of a blizzard. The extras are not playable anymore, but every other pad is looking good today. So go enjoy our hard work and play one. And let me say I think JR is losing the contest

It's not that he calculated it all that wrong, he only solved for cubic inches. He forgot to divide by 12 for cubic feet.

dischick
Jan 30 2005, 07:15 AM
but i dotn think it includes the amount in "inches fell".

if you go shovel all 49 tees out there with 2 inches having fallen, that is worth nothing than a pat on the back as oppossed to the the person who went and shoveled 49 tees, after 12 inches fell, who deserves a big gold star, and just maybe a trophy. that is unless, the 2inch person went and cleared off 2inches, 6 times.

Jan 31 2005, 07:38 PM
Surface area and volume are not very accurate measurements with snow. Who's shoveled the most weight of snow?

Also, congrats to Joe Levell for melting snow with his blistering 44 from Reds, 18 holes. He improved his first round score by 7 strokes and won ADV chills at the mills.

Many hours of drinking, golf at Hudson Mills minus Steve who decided to take a nap by Scott Slaters truck in the parking lot....

2 hours later

...woke up by park ranger, questioned about his sleeping location.

Park Ranger (confused)- "Excuse me son, why are you sleeping on the concrete?"

Steve (still drunk) - "I waaaas tiiiyerd, so I took a nap by my frienjjjs truck."

Park Ranger (now suspicious) - "I don't think this is your friends truck" as he looks over steve's shoulder at the real owner.

Steve (still asleep) - "I'll bet you 100 to 1 odds I know who owns this truck" as he finally looks at it, "wait a minute this isn't slaters truck."

Pretty much what happened.

That would be the Sunday 9 am geezer patrol. A 3.5 hr sixsome. Had to get to them before a bunch of folks trampled them down. We didn't have it together enough to haul salt, so a few of the darker holes are pretty slick, I imagine. Found eventually that it was easy enough to clear the turf next to the tee, which was safer than the iced pad. Under the snow, nothing's frozen.

Oh for a few more weeks of roller weather, please.

Yellows 1-18 are clear as of Sunday am. Another group was heading out on the Original and I think they scrounged up a shovel as well, so those are probably clean.

Didn't do the Letter holes. Stopped by hole A for a peaceful sit. Couldn't see down the fairway at all, with all the trees snow covered and low. Even where the fairway widens, it must have been about six feet wide. Woo Hoo.

Nice snow, though. No lost plastic among five guys.

Report from the field, courtesy of John Davis:

"I shoveled all the long tees and some of the short ones on the Monster course. If I remember correctly, I shoveled long and short on 1-12, and just long on A-E and 14-18. There was a big bush that fell on the long tee for D, but I moved it."

Tee pad report. John, Greg, Ryan, and Myself shoveled the Red tees. It started to get colder from about hole 12 on, so we only did the fronts of the remaining pads. We may have made them worse as the snow could make them slick and icey....but its the thought that counts...nothing that a little salt couldn't solve.

Jan 02 2008, 01:18 PM
Hi, Joe -

The Park has an alternate melter supply where they keep the skis. They will usually give some to folks who are cleaning up the pads. I suggest a five gallon bucket and a plastic sled.

I think the snow dump we got might just help with melting the ice that had accumulated. Sometimes there's enough heat captured under the snow to do the job. Maybe not, though.

With the couple we got last night, there's been well over a foot at da Mills.

Time for some warm weather to ice things up on top. Woo Hoo!

Snowller time!

I saw the shovel I'd left at #1 O. totally trashed near the tee to 18 a couple of weeks later. (No worries about that next year! Once the CC fees kick in, we'll all be better off in that respect.) That unit wasn't built for this snow, either. Take a good one with you. I hear there's warmer weather coming so I'm looking for some crusty snow golf by next w/e when I can get out.

Best of luck out there.

Snow was heavy and deap this afternoon. I shoveled for about an hour and a half. Only got 5 short pads finished. It's not that easy to find discs at times, spent a little time looking. It'd bee ideal to have a team of guys to tackle all the pads.

Joe, you were right about the ice under the pads, it's all gone.

Also, the park has several shovels at the activity center to use on the pads. They have some de-icer too but Kim couldn't find where the maintanence gents had put it. Good luck to the next person to make an attempt to clear pads. And if anyone finds my yellow beast on hole 1 or my buzzz-d, grab it. Thanks in advance and stay warm.

That's not a good pad-to-time ratio there, sir. That sort of situation calls for a large crew. Heavy snow, indeed. Defeated my neighbor's snow blower. A round even w/o shoveling in snow that deep is tough enough. Makes my legs ache to think of it. But then again I'm not of Yooper extraction. Natural shovelers up there, I hear.

Great work yesterday, Es and Jay. Its hard to find a wetter condition, considering it wasn't raining. I was soaked in the foot dept. even wearing goretex sox, time for some new ones I guess.

The ponds at the Mills are looking juicy.

We found a John Davis disc during jingles. I think it'll be passed on to Daemon one day when its remembered. A couple unlabeled ones out there as well. #1 and #11 were the tough holes...we always forget to send a spotter on one until its too late.

Pads at the Mills stink. I have no idea about the monster, but doubt there's been any clearing over there.

The blue tees range from ok to really bad. Reds range from bad to where's the tee pad? Unless it warms up and some work gets done when the timing is right, we'll be in for tough golfing on the Original this year...

"Cleared" the most recent snow off the reds today, pretty grizzly layer of ice already there. A pair of players ahead of us today cleared some of the blues, and later in the round they'd stopped trying so we did a bit of scraping. Ugh.

As of early this afternoon, the reds at Hudson Mills were "clear." We skipped the alphabets and 4 and 5, so mostly clear I guess is more accurate. About 9" of fresh snow. Someone had done them sometime during the snow, so we only had to clear about half. The blues were abused during the storm and were beyond the limits of my shovel.

The pads we cleared still need a dose of salt if someone gets the chance. Of course it will snow again soon, but they may be salvageable over time.

Only one lost disc among our 6-some. Mighty soft snow, tough to spot. Later groups had better send spotters since anything in the footprints just disappears...

At least the Man wasn't bugging us this week.
