View Full Version : noob stance questions

Aug 16 2004, 11:35 AM
I've read the rules, but I'd like to get some clarifications in regular old English about some stance topics. I come from an Ultimate background, where stepping is a huge part of throwing. I'm worried about casual play, but I'd like to do it correctly without being anal.

* After you mark your lie, does one of your feet have to rest on the lie, or can you stand behind it so you can step into your throw?
* Can I step sideways as far as I'd like to get around an obstacle, as long as one foot remains at the mark?
* When you are close to the basket, must both feet remain on the ground when throwing?

Sorry for the noob questions, but I haven't found anyone to play with who knows the rules.

thanks,
Plunky

Welcome to the game and I applaud you for taking an interest in the rules. Learning the rules before you develop your game is smart. You are demonstrating balance after you putt, before you move past your lie I hope as that can be a problem for some when they learn the game.

Anyway when you throw you need to have one supporting point of your body on the line of play between the center of your mini and the basket, not touching the mini and within 30 centimeters on the line of play. The other parts of the body can be anywhere that is not past the lie. You may take a run up as far as you wish as long as you have that supporting point on the LOP within 30 cm (about 11 inches) when you throw. After you throw you may follow thru past the mark unless you are within 10 meters (putting). Straddle putts are great ways to putt around trees!

Whoops, missed one question: When you throw only one supporting point (usually a foot) needs to be behind the mini, your other foot or anything else may be off the ground, no problem.

clarification: replace "when you throw" with "at the point of release". The only time to be concerned with placement of your contact points is at the exact moment of release (except when within 10m of the target).

Thanks for the info.

It sounds like I can lean/step as much as I need as long as I don't do it forward. My left foot will always be near the lie.

:o:oUh, see, here's where I say I knew that, Noob; but I thought you meant the book, not an interactive question/answer source...

So Noob, have you found the English here real enough?

Oh yeah, welcome to the world's greatest sport! :D
