The mach 3 courses are faster. Mach 3 means 3 times the speed of sound. Be careful because any course over Mach 1 can make you go deaf.

The Mach is to describe the Pole Hole, not the course.
In todays jargon, Mach 1 is the original. Mach 2 = Mach 1.2 a newer version, with revisions. Mach 3 = Mach 1.3 still the same Pole Hole, but additional revisions. I believe the newest is a Mach 5.
I can understand how you got confused. Our oldest and shortest course in the state has Mach 1's. The newer courses are harder and longer, with Mach 3's.

Its the basket design. I believe that the Mach 1 is a single chain basket (its been a long time since I played on any so I could be wrong). The Mach 2 is a double chain basket where the inner chains are like a shorter version of the outer chains. Both sets hang from either the outer diameter of the basket or near that point. The Mach 3 is also a double chain basket but the inner chains hang straight down around the pole to slow the disc just before it hits the pole to cut down on cut thrus and cough outs. So a Mach 3 course may actually be faster than a Mach 2 course because there would be fewer missed puts from basket design. Less cut thrus = fewer putts = better score = less time
