I wasn't sure where to post this, but a big thank you to all those that made the new course directory possible!!! Being able to search by zip code makes a huge difference.

I'll second that emotion. Previously, because of my course review page, I got a ton of e-mails from people who wanted to know what courses were near a specific town. When the course was located in a suburb or the next town over, they would have no idea what was nearby. Now they'll easily be able to see what are the closest courses.
I'll probably still get a few e-mails where people ask what is the best course near a specific town, but it should cut down on the info-only e-mails.
There seems to be a few bugs in the system however, if you click on a zip code and go to the end of the list it tells you the FARTHEST courses from you. Courses in Oklahoma, Wyoming and Washington are listed as over 9,000 miles away. Also, users will want to keep in mind that distances are "as the crow flies" and actual driving distances and times may be significantly longer.
Let the games begin! :D:D
Zip code 55488 has 10 courses under 10 miles, 21 under 20, and 25 under 30. Can anyone beat that?
Zip codes 28205 and 77086 have 8 under 10 miles, are those second place?
Zip code 50021 has 18 under 30 and thats the second best 30 mile I can find. :p
Somebody make a table of this before it gets out of hand.

78701 (Austin, TX) also has 18 within 30 miles...although, a great 18 hole course in Lakeway (within 30 miles) is not on the PDGA site, as it is a private course on a church's property (although it's open to the public to play, as long as you check in first with the youth minister).
Also, our newest course (Cat Hollow) near Round Rock is not included in the new directory either. That puts us at 20 courses within 30 miles.

77086 is the zip code for Houston. What's funny is that all the courses within that zip code are listed as 0 miles away from each other, and anyone who has ever driven in Houston knows otherwise. Some of those courses may be as much as 15-20 miles apart from each other, yet still within the same zip code!

That's probably a good reason why 55488 and 50021 were chosen as World Championships sites!

Exactly. I believe the only two courses in Houston that are in the same zip are at Tom Bass. (And their listed as being in separate zip codes!?!?)

Rooster, are you changing my game to include things not in the directory? :p That thread has been done before. :D We have the cool tool so let's use it for this fun diversion. If you want those 2 in the count then get them in the directory. :p :D
If you want thread drift, how about defining a Mecca? I say it's a zip code with at least 10 courses within 20 miles, and at least 4 of those have to be 4Star (out of 5Star) courses with the pdga's new rating system when it comes out. :) At least it should be X courses within X miles with at least X of them being XStar. But what are the Xs and when is the new rating system coming out??

the system is only as good as its data.
the reason all of the houston 77086 course are 0 miles from each other is that if no course lat/long values exist we have to use the lat/long of the zip code to compute distance.
so get those updates in! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

the courses showing up as 9,000 or so miles away are due to the lack of a - sign in front of the longitude. this can be corrected by submitting a course update, or by us going thru all the data for a reality check.

You lucky punks. Zip code 01267 has one under 30 miles (12) two under 50 miles and four under 70 miles.
I just found out that the one I play most is 117 miles away from my zip code. Brutal.
any idea when the new pda version of the course directory will be out?

I thought it was...
link from PDGA (http://www.brainkandy.org/apps/pdga_directory/)
28203 (Charlotte, NC) has 8 within 10 miles, 10 within 20 miles, and 15 within 30 miles :-) Unfortunately I moved away from 28203 to 22311 (Washington, DC) recently which only has 7 courses within 30 miles :-(
the pda course guide is not fully updated with new courses and such. not yet anyways, soon i hope.
