View Full Version : 22nd Annual Discraft Great Lakes Open

Jun 10 2004, 03:40 PM
Just a reminder to all that on June 19-20 A3DISC is hosting the 22nd Annual Great Lakes Open.

The two-day event here will take place at the scenic Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. Slated to compete for the pro purse include current World Champion Barry Schultz of Wisconsin, 2002 Pro Women’s World Champion Des Reading from Iowa and five time World Champion Elaine King of Toronto.

The competition among these top-touring players always proves to be an excellent observation of how well they control the flight of a flying disc. Upwards of 216 competitors are expected in both Professional and Amateur divisions.

All competitors will play two rounds of 24 holes in a shotgun format on Saturday beginning at 9:45 am. Sunday’s single round of 24 holes begins at 9:00 am followed by a final 9 beginning at approximately 3 pm.

Included among the cash and prizes to be awarded to the champions of the men’s and women’s professional divisions are the fruit of Putting Michigan First......two special putters made by Discraft are spending the 3 weeks preceding the DGLO barnstorming around 40+ disc golf courses in the state of Michigan. The putters are being played and autographed by over 20 Disc Golf Ambassadors to celebrate the Governor Granholm’s recent proclamation that June is Disc Golf Month in Michigan.

Spectators are invited to take a chance at winning their own Chain Star disc golf target to be given away on Sunday. Lastly, the first 100 non-competing A3DISC members who bring a non-member friend to watch the Final 9 event will receive a free commemorative t-shirt. The hand-out will begin at 1 PM on June 20.

Volunteers are needed for spotting, hospitality, and between-round score-charting assistance. Contact a3bod@worktools.si.umich.edu to find out more specifically how your help can be appreciated. :)

Parking is $4.00. For more information on the Discraft Great Lakes Open or the PDGA National Tour, please visit www.a3disc.org (http://www.a3disc.org) or www.pdgatour.com. (http://www.pdgatour.com.)

And 3 other things you won't want to forget

1. Discraft is conducting a very special clinic at Hudson Mills on Wednesday June 16th. It will begin around 7:30, so get your league round in early, then learn what you should have been doing earlier .

2. A pre-DGLO Doubles event is planned for 6 PM at Hudson Mills on Friday, June 18th. This has historically been a blast for all - especially those that get paired with a traveling pro!

3. A3DISC will be hosting the Annual Solstice - the DGLO's Doppelganger - on Wednesday June 25 - this is a very casual event that begins anytime after 4 PM at Hudson MIlls - your tee-time, starting hole, and foursome is left entirely to your discretion - A3DISC will provide dinner and awards after the event - come out and give your props to Helios in the best way possible! :D

Amateur player packs were fat with useful stuff.

Jun 19 2004, 12:50 PM
what was in the players pack, another D Stratus??

I found an unsponsored pro who loves those D-Stratii and will swap good stuff for them so I guess a D-Stratus is a fine disc after all!

Players pack included a clear colormaxed Cryztal Z-Challenger, a Z-Tsunami [a lot like a Predator, got me a birdie] a D-Buzzz, a shirt I have not yet looked at, a colormax mini, $6 lunch ticket and a snack bar. Lunch was good, as always, and well worth the $6. It might be a $55 - $57 player pack. Not certain how they value the stuff. Won't be a lot left for graduated payouts because the trophies look very expensive.

Right now i'm in 16th and hanging on for an Am Nationals invite which I cannot use but want to get anyway. It is deuce or die tomorrow from original shorts. I lost my go-to Buzzz and the understudy does not seem to know the lines.

I did not die in the deuce or die round. The new Buzzz stepped up and got the job done. I'm sure scores are up on the PDGA Tour pages.

Cam Todd won a 3-way sudden death playoff over Mike Randolph and Wisconsin's Chris Heeren. Cam threw the perfect drive on Original #1 to set up a 36 foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole.

The amateur prizes seemed reasonably fat. It looked like the sponsorship coordinator really got the job done. In addition to good prizes, great player packs and entirely edible food, they also had a fun jumbo toss and today they were giving out Tsunamis in the lunch line. The Tsunami has the lines of the Predator but is not as overstable. I was finding it very useful for forehand hyzers and as a backhand headwind driver.

I was very impressed with the way A3Disc ran the GLO this year.

This tournament was NOTHING short of AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A3 and Discraft did a AWESOME job. I wasnt very impressed with A3 after the NO FOOLIN tourny but this tournament was PERFECT.

The players pack were AMAZING the payouts were great. The CTPs were awesome. Lunch was delicious bout days. Water and Watermelon on the courses on saturday. The final 9 was also run very well. There is nothing bad you can say about this tournament.

I give a huge thanks and round of applause to both A3 and Discraft for hosting the best tournament i have played in all year!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be returning every year for year and years to come :D:D:D

Everything Millz said is absolutely true. The player's pack was almost worth the entry fee. When I first totaled it I did not realize that the shirt was a Rapid-Dry and that there was a Sunday lunch ticket. [My Sunday lunch ticket wriggled into the shirt and I never pulled the shirt out of the bag.]

When you figure in the Tsunami they gave away at lunch, the guy who came in LAST [Nice shooting, Marc!!!] was paid 100% of his entry fee with no deduction for the NT fee or the Can-Am fee [I think this was a Can-Am.]. On top of that they did a payout that amounted to another third of the advanced entry fee, and really nice nautical themed trophies.

And a jumbo toss.

And the great courses that come with any event at Hudson Mills.

Of the three A-tiers I've played so far this year, this one was objectively the best!

[Please ignore the signature line. I swear it was not Venus this weekend.]

you sure it was venus, and not uranus? :)

Not sure if Marc can read your compliments, Bruce, he's only 7 years old. But he played Advanced and finished.

Can anyone tell me what the format for the tournament was? I am looking at the Open scores, but I don't know which course was played when, and from which tees. I play at Hudson Mills a few times a year, and I'm curious how the pros score there!

Thanks!

I believe the pros played the Monster Course from the Black (back) tees twice, shooting to the Championship pins. They also played the Original Course Blue (back) tees (to Championship pin positions?).

The Final Nine was a combination of six Original holes (#'s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 18) and three Monster holes (#'s 1, 2, 18) with a modified tee position on Monster Hole 1 (teeing from the open area near the parking lot).

The Men's sudden death play-off replayed Monster #18 and ended one hole later on Original #1.

Pro Open played 2 Rounds of Blacks on the Moster to the Championsihp Pins and they also played one round from the Blues (long tees) on the original. There are only champ pins on the Monster course.

Last weekend was my first time firing at the Championship pins. Any plans to add more to the Monster, or any to the Original course?

(I'll be playin' 'em again tomorrow morning!)
