View Full Version : There you are
You step up to tee-off on a hole with your buddies.
It's a casual round and you're trying to get in some solid practice before the big tournament next weekend.
You're first shot is parked and you seem satisfied.
As your friends begin to walk away, you tell them to wait, as you pull out another disc and slam it.
Do you still consider this as an ace?

i'd be pumped to hit it but imo it is not a "real" ace
on an easier course we play at we do an 'ace run' on a couple of holes, you throw a 3 discs on a few holes and if ya hit one everyone has to pitch in and buy you a case
i hit right above the chains but it didnt fall in...so close to a case!
This is funny because it actually happened during a round I was playing in today. There were three of us in the group and we threw our tee shots first. Then we all proceeded to take a second shot at it again and one of the guys I was playing with hit it. The other guy who witnessed it said it was not an ace. I myself believe it was an ace just not a "during the round put it on the scorecard ace". I think they should count as aces but they shouldn't be held at the high regard as that of a first shot off the teebox ace. I just told him that he should explain the conditions of his second ace when he tells the story.

That's right. It is called a "second ace". Hope you guys didn't pay him on that second shot. :D
Extra shots, extra strokes! Sorry to take away from your "supposed" ACE, but I would have stroked your card apppropriately.

ANYTIME and i mean ANYTIME you throw a disc from the tee into the basket it is an ACE. There are no such things as good aces or bad aces. AN ACE IS AN ACE IS AN ACE. If it came out of your hand off the tee pad and went in the basket in one shot its an ace. No matter if you threw 1 or 20 discs.

It's an ace! Any shot from the tee into the basket on any throw. We have rules that it's $5 for the 1st ace and $2.50 for the second.
Well, it wasn't me that aced. Also, I didn't pay him &$%@. And last but not least, why would I (or you) stroke him when it was just a recreational round between friends on a Sunday. Are you that much of a Richard?

Ace means one. After that, it's just a practice shot. Way deep down inside, you know it doesn't count. It was cool and made for a neat story, but, alas, it is not an ace. $.02

IMO, If I had just started playing (new to the sport, only playing a few months), and my second or third shot from the tee went in, You bet your arse I'd call it an ace. I want to tell everyone about my ace. If you throw from the tee and it goes in, count it!

Technically, aren't all shots thrown outside of tournaments practice shots?
If you ace your second drive in a tournament, its an ace, but it will not count on your card. If its just in a casual round, its an ace! If your friends are so anal that it was on your second shot in a casual round, tell them to get their bags out of their butts. I usually throw 2-3 drives when I play casually, and if I ace my 1st, great! If I ace my 2nd, great! If I ace my 3rd, great! It doesn't really matter, and aces aren't really good for anything outside of bets and tournaments.
If you did ace on your second drive in a tournament, you have a couple options. You could declare your ace as your second shot, and take a stroke to make your score for that hole 2. Or if you wanted, you could play your first and take a stroke for the ace, but the first is probably the best way to go. If there is an ace pot, you shouldn't get it. If your first shot was OB, thats a tough one to call!
i'd call it a nice shot but i wouldn't call it an ace (imo)

Maybe we need a formal rule. :D
In every other sport, practice is practice, and a game or tournament is where your shots count. The reason for this is that the conditions are different. Different pressures, rules etc. In practice I regularly throw three to four shots better than I do in tourneys because of the difference in pressure. So, for myself the Ace's I have hit in practice count nada except the instant thrill I get. When I hit one in a tournament then I count it. You can call a "practice" Ace an Ace but you can't compare it to a tourney Ace. The conditions are too different for the comparison to be fair.

I would call it an Ace (on the second drive), but it would not go onto my list of real Aces. I would not expect anyone to pay anything for a second drive Ace, nor would I pay anyone anything for a second drive Ace. When we are playing casual rounds, any drive taken after the first is purely for practice, and is not played from after that. Only the first shot from a tee or subsequent lie is used for scoring.
Of course, that's just me and the people I play with.
I have done a really special thing!.
Two old persons watched me when i started to throw some practicethrows on a 200 feet straight hole.
I pick up a beaten soft magnet and throw it right in the basket!. then i
pick up another one and throw it right in the basket again!!!, i picked up my third one!, and throw it in the chains but it bounce out, When the old persons says, it cant be done everytime.
I pick up my bag and walked to the basket and feel amazed!.
A week later a friend of mine do a hio on a hole, then he been telled of 2 older person who passed that they have seen another guy do 2 in a row!.
I don't think this will happen again!.

Never having had a hole in one, I find it amusing all of the debate about if the second drive would be an ace.
IMO all shots outside a tournament or league are practice. If I don't have to write down my score, I can empty the bag! On several holes on my home course I do. If the second or third one was an ace, I don't think the thrill would be any less. They only pay off when there is an ace fund. Other than that, they are just an interesting personal stat.
I'm not worring about what flavor that ace is until I get the first one.
Continue your debate...
I ask because none of my aces have come off the first shot, or in a league/tournament.
I still consider the second, third, fourth, etc.. an ace. But it's just a different ace.
It is still difficult to ace just about any hole in x amount of shots. And I think if someone tells you otherwise, tell them to throw however many you threw to see if they will ace it.. Odds are they won't.
I agree it shouldn't be counted on the tournament level or whatever, but an ace is an ace from shot 1 or shot 7, you put it in the pin from the tee.
If your first shot was OB, Count your second shot, which was the ACE and take a circle three! what's tough about that? Good shot.
I believe it is an "ACE" aka "Hole in one", HOWEVER! It is not an Eagle or 2 under par which would be a 1 on a scorecard. SO if you were SCORING, it would be a circle 3 because of the second shot and a stroke, same as a retee/OB. BUT it is still one shot from the teepad to the basket, therefore an "ACE"
IMHO
A week later a friend of mine do a hio on a hole, then he been telled of 2 older person who passed that they have seen another guy do 2 in a row!.

So what happens if you're driving down the road and you see a DG course and you stop and find a tee pad and huck a disc and can it? Isn't that an ace?
It boils down to the definition of the word. "One throw from the tee to the basket" equals an ace.

I did this when I was traveling across the states. Parked the car. Got out. Walked up to this dirt area with a half cut tree stump on the ground with a home made tee-sign etched in the stump with an arrow pointing the direction about 320 feet.
Old style Mach 2 basket. Hit it with a 174g Super Puppy.
Sweet. Happened in 1984. :D
I think there is a difference between practice and playing a round that is not in a tourney. If you are playing a round of disc golf, you keep track of your score and there are no extra drives (or putts, or mids, or any), so you would only get a second drive if you went ob, or chose to try for the circle three. We try to go for the course record sometimes, but to do that, you can't take any extra shots. That's just the way we play. In this type of play, an ace is an ace. (mho)

I've known a few guys who have claimed to have hundreds of aces - only to find out later, that a majority were gotten by standing on the tee and emptying the bag - sometimes multiple times. One of them would even practice on a blind hole, w/his girlfriend saying "a little left, a alittle short, etc. until he'd can it.
Call them aces if you want - but there's something just a little lacking in the sprit of the words "hole in one" when you take two or three or 17 tries to get it in. Just my .$02
On the other hand, last weekend in Raleigh - after stopping to check in at the registration table, I went down to the first tee - threw a puppy - hit a tree. Pulled out an aviar - went right in the bucket!!! Hmmmm do I call it an ace or not?

Personally, I wouldn't count any ace that didn't happen during a round. Doesn't matter if it's casual or tournament, but it has to be while you're actually playing.
And it has to be your first throw. That's the whole point. If your first drive goes OB and you nail the second one, it's not an ace. It's a, "Great save, too bad you didn't do that the first time." It's not about whether you, given enough chances, are physically capable of hitting the shot. It's about whether you can do it under pressure, on your first try. Golf is meaningless otherwise.

"Mulligan Aces" are cool, but they aren't real aces. I got a mulligan ace once, and Pat Sweeney forced me to take a dollar from him so he could write "bastard" on my disc. I didn't want to take the buck because it wasn't a real ace.
Not that I've ever hit any sort of ace, but if I got one that wasn't during a round I'd have no problem saying I hit the chains from the tee, but I don't really think it would count as an ace or hole-in-one.

OK. I aced hole 10 at cedar hills (raleigh) last night. It was witnessed. It was during a casual round. I did throw more than one shot from several tee pads. I didn't keep score. it was my firsrt and only throw from 10's tee. Does it still count?
only if it was a 10X aviar
Why when you throw another tee shot is it called practicing, but when you throw a second putt, it's called a tantrum putt...imo If you are playing a round and throwing extra shots you are just slowing down the game.
After our fast-pitch game last night (which we won), we had batting practice. I put 6 over the fence. Were they REAL home runs ? LOL---Kidding. but not about the home runs.

If you are some loser w/ absolutely no integrity, than I guess yes. If you suck that bad at disc golf that you have to count those as aces, than you should get a new hobby. For people who are respectable, HELL NO. People saying practice shots that go in are "aces" are idiots. That is extremely irratating to me
