My girlfriend used to throw stable disc's around 165-170grams
I throw the heavy stuff around 175+
Innova , Discraft, Lightning ,Gateway, Millenium , DGA ?
I'm not sure what your preference is. I throw Innova.
They make alot of different types of disc's with light ,medium and heavy weight's available.
I wish you the best of luck out there playing and hope you encourage some of your women friends to come out and play !!! This sport needs more women players.
Hope some of the talented ladies can help you a little more with disc selection. They would know more. Some like Discraft and some like Innova.
I hope this helps some.
I have been playing for almost 30 years and I still don't know everything there is to know about this sport. Learn as much as you can and never stop learning. :D
Take care and have fun ,

My wife (who is a pretty good golfer ;) ) throws a lot of the same discs that I do, but several grams lighter. She mostly sticks to 164-169 gram drivers. Alot of guys suggest really light stuff for beginner women (150g class), but I think that is overly macho. There is no reason why you can't handle heavier discs. Stability depends on how you throw - she uses overstable and stable drivers (Beast, Orc, Viking), but I know a lot of ladies who prefer more understable plastic, because they require more finesse and less power. She is also a deadly putter with a Rhino (heavy - 175g I think?)

Leopards and Cobras are a great driver/midrange combo for most ladies. 162-167g.

If you have a lot of power you might want something more overstable, but Tita Ugalde throws 150 stuff and throws really far with a ton of power.

Experiment with different weights. Don't limit yourself.
My lady used to throw some of my plastic too.
Hurt her arm trying to throw a 190 Phoenix.
Light to medium weights on drivers and mid-range plastic.
As far as putters...........well , find one's that you like.
I choose to throw a JK Aviar X. It putts very well. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

By the way, my wife and daughter both play so I have a little experience watching their disc selections. :)

Laure tweaked her elbow at Wintertime and is trying to rest it still. She was bummed about missing ElDo because we really like that course.

Ryan doesn't play at all anymore.

Very Cool !!!!! Sounds like your not afraid to throw hard.
Proper technique and practice, practice, practice will help you.
Hope you play in many fun tournaments. :D
Be careful not to injure yourself though while playing.
I have seen some crazy things happen to folks while ripping plastic down the fairway.
Yea , your not afraid to throw though!!!! Cool !!!

Can't help you then. The women that rule my life throw Innova. :)

Wait a minute, my wife likes the DGA 150g SuperDrive, which is an XL and made by Discraft for the DGA.

Innova can be great..... :-) i just haven't found one that fits.... :-) :D

Impressive distance. My wife and I both throw Discraft. I try to help her set up her bag according to her ability. Unless you are throwing flex shots or S Shots that you want to come back you may be choosing the wrong disc. The X2 is over-stable. My wife uses the X-2 as a wind driver. Try the Elite X XS for distance. Of course there is also the Elite X Wildcat too. The reason I'm recommending the Elite X plastic is because the Z line plastics make the disc more stable. The X plastic is not as durable but has more glide. You may have already tried them. What's in your bag, or what you've tried? If you are interested in hi-tech plastics and you don't want to loose glide from over-stability give the Z Xpress a try. They're pretty sweet.

:-) I have the XS and Wildcat but in Z plastic....... and I have the X press in X plastic........ lol it doesn't get weirder than that! I bought the JLS super straight and it glides well..... that is my second choice driver but it is light at 164...... and i am impressed with my predator at 175 in X plastic..... it keeps it curvy and stable in the wind..... Disc golf is like a rocket science project sometimes.....

164 is not too light, I like to throw 166g - 170g myself. I don't throw any disc around max weight unless it is a mid. Beat that Predator up some and it should start to soar for you. X-Predators are so good I don't tell people about them.

Oh, and something to consider...Have you ever tried to throw the X-Comet. It is a super friendly mid range. It is straight and has ultra glide. If you want accuracy, that is the disc you can't live without.

They're ALL lady friendly!

Seriously, lighter weights are easier to control (for everyone) and to make them do what you want as long as you have proper technique. I say again, proper technique! Ken Climo can throw 150 class, why? Because he has proper technique. Guys who say that 150 class is too flippy don't have the patience to learn how to throw it. Heavy discs cover up poor technique. Learn to throw the light ones well, and the heavier ones with throw better with less effort. There, I'm stepping off of the soapbox now....

I throw 150 most of the time. I use low 160's when it is windy. I like Polaris LS and JLS for the straight shots. A beat LS for the turnovers and an Eagle for the fades. Upshots just have to be a Roc and I putt with a Omega AP or Omega driver.

Personally, I would experiment with the X plastic and DX plastic discs just because they are less expensive. Find the models that work for you and then move to the Z or CE/Pro models for durability. Sure they fly a little different, but that is easy to deal with.

Not to mention the macho factor of throwing "max weight." Get over that and you can throw farther.

True. I have thrown a DX 150 class Beast over 450 feet.
So , yes , 150 class discs fly well. It is difficult for myself though ,trying to putt into a headwind with a 150 gram putter :(
That's me though. Something I may try to work on. :D

Putters are different!

May 03 2004, 06:44 PM
sometimes i make putts with my 175 midrange going into a head wind...... one of the pro comments was to "course manage" in times of gusty winds! instead of going for a bird and ending up a long par, i just toss into close range so that way i can have a definate 3...... i hate driving into the wind..... :(

ahh, a lady after my own heart. I agree with what someone else said, go for X plastic stuff. I typically carry both X and Z in all my drivers, X for calm days and Z when it's windy. The X Predator is incredible. Try getting your hands on a lighter one. (and if you find any 168 blue ones grab me a few!) Also, really try to get your hands on an X Wildcat, straight as can be and tons of glide! I carry at least 2 of them at all times. I've found the X XS to be a great anhyzer disc once it gets beat up a bit...I also roll with it.

For that OK wind (I learned to play in Tulsa myself) get your hands on a Talon. This thing is as flat as you can find...cuts through the wind great!

My girl throws light valks and beasts for drivers, heavy spiders for midranges, and heavy wizards and aviars for putters....and she throws them quite well I might add! :D

Eddie, how heavy a Spider are you talking about? Max weight? My wife wants one and I've been looking for one about 165g. All her drivers are 150 class. I thought heavier than her drivers would be good for a midrange but not 175.

I suppose.... :-) That was going to be my nickname on here..... Course Management...... :-P I do own a talon but it is a crazy hyzer disc at 2.5 (i think)! And i do own a predator in X and a wildcat in Z plastic. I guess to remedy my wind game is to actually go out and rough it for practice.

My driving discs are gradually getting lighter in weight...... around 165-173. But i absolutely love my 175 midranges..... I will accept no substitutes in the weight department.

When I started, I had a few 150 class Stingrays. I played a few tournaments and won some plastic.

I've been playing for 7-8 years now. I'm improving but not an Advanced player, yet. I currently have Z-Xpress, Wasp, and Leopard and Eagle as my drivers. I use different ones, based on how I'm doing that day. The Eagles are 150; Leopard is 165; the others are 172-174. I throw Rocs for midrange (most are 174). I putt with 173-4 APX.

I play tournaments in Joliet and Michigan. I win plastic that I think I can throw. If I don't have a choice, I play several practice rounds with it so I can find out how we work together.

I hope this helps.
