View Full Version : Hip Problems
I've playing now for 6 or 7 years. Recently I started having hip problems. I throw RHBH and my right hip gets really tight and sore. To the point where I'm limping.
I've just started to analyze my form, but don't know if that's the issue. I've looked at some people's drives on video and see some some people rotate on their heel upon follow thru. I tend to rotate on the ball of my foot on follow through. Am I leaning too much forward?
I'm interested to hear if anyone else is having hip problems and what kinds of stretches and or exercises to do to remedy the problem. Also if anyone could recommend changes to my form. I throw around 350 with the odd throw that approaches 400.
Cheers...
IMHO you should go to the doctor. Pain is a good indication of an injury.

If you're limping, see a doctor! :(
I haven't been playing long, but this site really helped me reduce my knee pain.

I haven't experienced hip pain, but I know that a sprained hip flexor can take a long time to fully heal. Maybe you should reduce the weight of your bag? :D
I'm seeing a physio-therapist right now. Just wondering if my technique is wrong and that's what caused me to get into this state.
When I first started playing a few years ago, I developed a pain in my left hip (I throw RHBH). I thought I might have to give the game up, but my doctor gave me a cortisone shot and the problem never came back. He thought I had probably irritated a bursa. A little rest, a little cortisone, and I was fine.

Pain in the hips can usually be attributed to insufficient stretching. If you're seeing a therapist, have him/her recommend stretches that focus on the legs, abdomen and lower back. I know several, but they're easier to show than describe.
I have the same sorts of problems - if I don't spend 15-20 minutes just stretching - my hips and lower back get sore easily. If I take the time to prep correctly - I have no pain at all.

Another possible cause of hip pain (RHBH), is if you plant your right foot hard with a very straight leg prior to your arm swing. This will give a lot of stress on the right hip joint, and unless you have extremely strong abdominal/lower back muscles to absorb the momentum this could be painful over time. A trick to avoid this (if this is the case in your throwing form?) is to slightly bend your right leg at the knee instead of keeping the leg completely straight. This will let some of the forces flex out through your leg, instead of getting caught by your right hip. Good luck!
