View Full Version : 2004 Hall of Fame People's Choice Nomination
Disc golfers and fans,
Greetings from Atlanta and the Disc Golf Hall of Fame Office! 2003 was a sweet year for the Hall of Fame with the reintroduction of The Hall of Fame Tournament in Augusta. It will return to the PDGA schedule in 2005. We honored Stancil Johnson, Mark Horn, and Brian Hoeniger in Flagstaff.
For the 2004 Grand Finale we go to Iowa where we will hold the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Who will it be? Could it be the DGHOF "People's Choice Nominee"?
The People’s Choice Nomination adds excitement to the disc golf community spirit. Here are nominees already on the ballot.
Mats Bengtsson
Crazy John Brooks
Bill Burns
Charlie Callahan
Brian Cummings
Dan Ginnelly
Marty Hapner
Chuck Kennedy
Geoff Lissaman
John Lissaman
Derek Robins
Fred Salaz
Bob Vanderboss
Sylvia Voakes
Lynne Warren
Don Wilchek
Tim Willis
Bill Wright
The People's Choice will be added to this list before May 1.
Lavone Wolfe founded the Hall of Fame institution and wrote the DGHOF Charter. Thy DGHOF receives tremendous support from the PDGA and disc golfers around the world. The HOF Charter celebrates contributors whose passion for disc golf transcends personal gain. Nominees are screened and must have 15 years of participation with the PDGA. Hall of Famers vote for new honorees, annually. Since 1993, 40 nominees have been selected.
Here is how YOUR opinion counts. The disc golf community will elect one nominee to the final ballot, your "People's Choice Nominee.” You may lobby for your choice on this PDGA Discussion thread. Disc golfers from around the world may send one nomination to speedyinga@aol.com. Please make the subject line "DGHOF PCN." Submit one name by April 30. The top "People's Choice Nominee" will appear on the final ballot for distribution to DGHOF members. Last year you chose Marty Hapner. As other top runners-up, he remains as a nominee.
Thanks for your participation in a new tradition. Be aware that the DGHOF final vote is confidential. Few know the outcome until after the PDGA Awards Ceremony.
Enjoy the game!!

Dan Ginnelly for the DGHOF. Super guy, always has time to chat.
I'm fairly (not completely) certain that all of us smack talking OMB's have but one choice to support for the PC Nomination.
A vote for Bill Burns is a vote for MM1's everywhere! DGRZ #001 must be in the HOF!

Speedy can correct me if I'm wrong, but what he is saying is for people to send in a name that is currently NOT on the list he posted, and not a current HOF member. The person that gets the most emails will be added to the list of nominees. That list of nominees then goes to the current HOF members that vote. I don't know if they are limited to a certain number of votes or not. Speedy then tabulates the results to be announced at World's.
I'm flattered to be on the list of nominees. It's a good thing that not many HOF'ers read this board, or my chances would be right there with that certain snowball... :D
Being a PDGA member for 26 years ROCKS!!!
Brent Hambrick. I never knew him, but everything I have heard seems to deem him worthy of the DGHOF :D

Based on what Speedy wrote as the current minimum qualifications, this would be my first year of eligibility since I started the sport in 1989 and joined in 1990. So, if you're thinking of People's Choice candidates, then only people with PDGA numbers less than about 5000 would have the minimum 15 years listed in the guidelines (mine's 4949). I was thinking Juliana for a candidate but she falls below the minimum years guideline. I think Hambrick is a fine person to consider.
I would like to mention Ken Westerfield as someone who, I have been told by a veteran, should really be in the Hall of Fame.
Just some of his accomplishments include :
Before contributing to the sport of disc golf, Ken along with Jim Kenner helped start the sport of freestyle.
He ran many frisbee tournaments in Canada and included disc golf in many of these tournaments. He won many disc golf events throughout the 1970s. He was the tournament director of the Worlds Championship in Toronto.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Has anyone else ever heard of him?
I have received many nominations to speedyinga@aol.com. Bill is correct in that only new nominations (not listed in the two original posts) need be submitted. The DGHOF People's Choice nominee with most votes by individuals will be added to the final ballot. Chuck is correct in that members with PDGA numbers need not be submitted UNLESS they supported the PDGA as a nonmember. All submissions are screened. All exceptions to the 15 year requirement are considered by the board. Thanks for participating.
The Hall of Fame People's Choice Nominations close April 30.

I would like to add Al Schack to the list. Al (IMNSHO) exemplifies what is best in DG in his attitude towards play and other players. He has proven himself a worthy competitor at the highest level, and would be worthy of consideration for DGHOF voting.

Quick everyone, nominate me. That's the only way I'll ever get my name on a disc.

My choices would have to be
KB Clark #284
Red Whittington
J Gary Dropcho
Brent Hambrick
just some great people who have all done great things for this sport.
The Hall of Fame members have begun voting.
Glen Whitlock of Canada received the People's Choice Nomination. He is a great sportsman. Glen would probably win the award for most road miles travelled (without his own vehicle). I'm guessing that Gregg Hosfeld would be the most travelled disc golfer ever. Thanks to all that participated.
Hall of Famers vote for as many as FIVE contributors to the sport from the following list of nominees. New in 2004. Nominees must have 15 years of active PDGA participation. Exceptions may be presented to the DGHOF Board of Directors for consideration. All nominees must be submitted first to the DGHOF Director before official posting.
Voting ends June 1 and top vote recipoeints will be honored at the PDGA Worlds.
The following people received at least four HOF votes (top ten) in 2003 or were nominated in 2004:
Mats Bengtsson
Crazy John Brooks
Bill Burns
Charlie Callahan
Brian Cummings
Dan Ginnelly
Marty Hapner
Chuck Kennedy
Geoff Lissaman
Johnny Lissaman
Derek Robins
Fred Salaz
Bob Vanderboss
Sylvia Voakes
Lynne Warren
Glen WhItlock (People’s Choice Nominee)
Don Wilchek
Tim Willis
Bill Wright
Remember THE HALL OF FAME CHARTER:
“Hall of Fame inductees shall be judged to fit the following standards:
Favorable standing and an honorable reputation within the disc golf community. Made significant contributions to the sport of disc golf through development, promotion, leadership, or sportsmanship - that merit our recognition, remembrance and respect.”
