View Full Version : How to get rid of flutter?

Mar 24 2004, 02:21 PM
I have been having a serious problem with flutter lately. It is a big problem when I am throwing my Rocs and Wasps, etc. Mainly just the mid-range discs. I throw right handed backhand with the power grip. I also put my left hand on the disc too for support and control. Could this possibly be the source of my unclean release? I have been playing for about two years now and this problem didn't come up until last summer. I didn't change my form or anything, it was just like one day I had a clean release everytime, and the next day I was fluttering and turning over most of my mid-range shots. Just for more info, I can throw a Roc around 350' give or take dead straight when I actually do get a flutter-free release. I know its kind of hard to give me tips since you can't see me throw, but some basic pointers would be helpful. Thanks.

Brian,

You probably are not getting a clean release (like you said). I'm just guessing here but I bet you're holding the disc too deep in your hand and not out on your fingers.

My thinking here is from the perspective of an ex-baseball player. When a pitcher throws a fastball, he holds it out in his finger tips. All changeup pitches have the same motion as the fastball and same snap of the wrist but the ball is held deeping in the hand, often to the palm (Palmball for example).

If you hold the disc too deep in your hand, it does not come out as clean from your fingers and the extra friction and small forces cause the flutter. This is my best guess. I get fluttery discs when I try to throw mid-ranges shorter distances and "choke-up" on them by holding them with more edge against my palm.

My last thought would be your hand is not coming open on a straight line causing the disc to brusha finger or your palm as it goes by causing flutter.

Any thoughts from someone who really knows the answer would be appreciated as I just made up what made sense to me.

You should ask mookie! but IMO Flutter is caused by the middle finger pushing up to much. Are you using the "flip the bird" grip, where the middle finger is slightly extended?

2nd IMO if your index finger and thumb are not on top of one another during grip, you get flutter,

Take it or leave it.

I think you hit it right on the head Max. Thanks. I parked a flat 350' hole with my Roc today. Totally flutter-free and consistant. Now why didn't I figure that out sooner? I'll let you know if today was just a fluke, but i doubt it. :)

Brian,

Glad to hear about your throw. Awesome shot with a roc! I'm trying to get rid of flutteritis as it gets windy here. We have a forcast of 20mph winds with gusts to 40mph for the afternoon and I'm playing for tags at 4:00. Wind flutter is the worst because everything heads off to the right (waaaaay right).

Yeah. I whip out the Monster on every hole with headwind when it gets like that. It gets like that a lot here in GB too. We almost never have a calm day. I don't even attempt to throw mid-ranges into a headwind like that. :D

Brian, I putted a couple of times yesterday with a Monster (from 10-15ft but into a huge headwind). Sometimes it just feels better to putt with a driver in the wind although it does cut through the chains more often. Pick your poison I guess. When I need to throw upshots from within 100' into the wind, I like to throw a mid-range but with some anhyzer knowing it will get knocked down (hopfully near the pin). That way I don't expose the underside and have it zoooooom way to the left (RHBH).

Looks like I get more practice this afternoon, the trees are really swaying outside. Gonna be flingin discs within two hours. Yippee!

It really hepls to have the discs "out on your fingers" when you throw midranges. If its not so deep into your hand, you can get a cleaner release and really rip your discs.
