My 1992 Honda Civic is on his way out. I am considering the 2004 Mazda3 or another Cicic DX or LX.
What should I get?

Mar 17 2004, 02:00 PM
Get a Prius!

Honda Element. Your big self needs the room. Plus it would be easy to get Christopher in and out of. And being from NJ, you will need something with low insurance.

Mar 17 2004, 02:44 PM
Chris, don't make me laugh. :D
There is NO car that is cheap to insure in NJ

Get a Honda Civic Hybrid. Starts at about $20,000, but you will save so much money on gas in the long-run: the Hybrid gets 40-50 mpg.

Get ready for gas prices to exceed $2.00 per gallon, it's coming sooner than you think.

What are you talking about??? They've been between $2.19 and $2.25 here for a while.

Hybrid....my concern are repairs...don't I have to go back to the dealer for that? Or can my local mechanic fix most of that stuff.

Mar 17 2004, 03:52 PM
I own a 2002 Toyota Prius and I'm about to take it to the dealer for it's 60K checkup...that will be the second time I've taken it in...the first was for the 30K checkup.

I would buy another in a heartbeat. the 2004's are SWEEEET!

Major difference between honda and Toyota hybrids is the engine(s) Honda has a motor assist engine, meaning that the electric motor and internal cumbution engine(ICE) are combined into one unit.
Toyota has two separate engines the electric and the ICE that can work as individuals or together for max power. What this gives you is the ability (with modified driving habits) to push the MPG upwards toward 60! I average 48-52 MPG.

Then if you hang a set of balls off the back bumper...

That national gas average right now is $1.721. In Pennsylvania, you can find unleaded regular for about $1.60 per gallon.

I can't help it if you stupidly live in that part of the country.

who cares what kinda car you get,it's not like i'am gonna get to drive it.

question:can a hybrid car run on chocolate

Mar 18 2004, 12:26 AM
Get an old VW Diesel bus and convert it to run on discarded veggie oil. Then it doesn't matter how much MPG you get cause Mickie D's will give you "Gas" for free! The conversion is fairly simple and almost any fast foor restrraunt will give you used grease for free!

Or you could screw it and get a bus pass!
Get a honda insight...my friend gets 81mpg on his! The Prius is great too. That little electric motor makes 44 WHP and ~250 WTQ!!!!! Thats huge! I wonder if it would be possible to swap in a more powerful toyota engine and retain the electric motor and variable transmission!

go to this site and look under autos at hybrid cars for an education! (http://www.howstuffworks.com)

I test drove a new RX-8 this weekend...WOW!!!!!!!

Mar 18 2004, 03:00 AM
Get a Ford Explorer. They carry more discs and you'll help support my stepdad's retirement.

Screw the gas mileage. Get a Hummer, it can run over anything else on the road. Nice ride. And you can write off your taxes about 36k of it.

Just buy something that I'll look good in when we ride together. Do they make such a thing?

Mar 18 2004, 12:13 PM
I don't remember what was standard and what the option are...

I got cruise control and I got side air bags.

It was $20,000 and you get a $1500 deduction from the IRS for buying a hybrid (I got $2000, but I think the 2004 figure is $1500) plus Maryland didn't charge a sales tax (another $500 savings) and a number of states allow the hybrids in the HOV lanes with only one person in the vehicle.

Ugh, I paid $1.549 per gal for my last fill up. The price has risen to $1.569 when I drove by last night.

The price per barrel of oil reached the $38 mark yesterday. I think that was the highest price ever or something like that.

The reason the price is so high, even though the production is more than usual, is because the American $ is not buying what it use too. Oil is traded in USA $. There fore the price for oil is good for all those countries who's money is strong against the dollar.

(Cheese prices have skyrockted in the last two weeks also. It is going to cost me $230 more this next week for cheese than 2 weeks ago. That comes straight out of my pocket.)

We're paying $2.12 per gallon for the cheap gas right now. Only California and Hawaii are paying more. I'm hearing that it will be over $3 a gallon soon.

Oh, how thankful I am for having the perk of a company vehicle.

Mar 18 2004, 03:15 PM
With those gas prices, I feel like I am back in Germany again.
Anyway, drove Civic LX' 5-speed manual today - it's allright, doesn't have a whole lot of power, I believe 110hp. Gotta drive one of those Mazdas. About the same price, but 160 horses. Well, that is about half the horsepower that Chris has in his Corvette.

Happy Birthday Chris, another year closer to being a grandmaster. :D

Hondas like to rev. My gal's '97 Civic LX (not Si) doesn't do a whole lot until around 4500 rpms...then it screams...and so will the next gear if you hold on past 6000!
Hondas are pretty bullet-proof/solid cars, IMO. They hold their resale value better than a Mazda...new or used.

i drive a ford excrusion so i have to ask myself do i want to eat this week or do i want to drive

I like what someone else said earlier, go with the Honda Element. It starts at about the same price as the Honda Civic LX. It will have more room for travel and carrying more discs. And the main thing is... IT IS A HONDA :).

I was told by my local mechanic that there are three makers of cars that will last, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan with Mitsubishi right behind. I had an '87 Accord and my wife drove it for 250,000 miles before we traded it for an Odyssey, and I also had a '76 Toyota truck that had almost 300,000 miles to it before I got a Tundra 4WD :D. As long as you keep up the regular maintenance, then any of these three will last you forever.

Good luck.

My wife and I buy exclusively Honda. Our reasoning is that there is only one car company that has equal value, reliability and resale and that is Toyota. However, Honda beats Toyota in terms of erganomics. Sit in a Camary and sit in an Accord and the Accord has a better fit and much more room in the cockpit. Furthermore, read Road and Track or Car and Driver. Honda's win in the fun to drive category every time (although the Mazda's are also high here).

I like the Civic especially the si for carrying disc gear but the Element is the better disc golf vehicle. There are so many ways to store gear. The gas milage is not as good 21-24 but still good. We have a CRV with the same engine and it is quite powerful.

But if it were me I would wait until 2005. Honda is coming out with an SUT based on the Pilot platform. Seats 5 and still has a bed for hauling gear. A little on the ugly side but if it is a standard Honda, It will be the best SUT on the market. :D

Mar 19 2004, 02:19 PM
Drove the Mazda today...Sorry Civic, but that one is nice! Interior is nicer, pickup is quicker, get curtain airbags in the back and ABS. Plus I qualify for $1000,- cash back.

OK, another question for you guys out there. Since I live so close to Delaware, can I buy a car over there with no sales tax and get away with it? Or is our great "Garden State" of NJ going to get me for that on my next tax return... You know how things are nowadays. They'll put you into some computer system, and then it pops up somewhere in our State Government offices that I didn't pay my 6% on the car.
