View Full Version : Star rating opinions and survey
One of the things that I don’t particularly care for with this new message board is the “Star rating system” for threads and posters. I think it is very “pre teen girl” of the people who use it. As a TD, I want to know WHY someone has a problem with me or one of the events I am involved with. I feel that this system should be taken off the board. At MINIMUM, it should be modified to make people accountable for how they rate folks and threads instead of it being anonymous.
Anyway, I want to see what others think before I present my case to the Board Administrators. Please vote below and feel free to express your opinion as well. I have gone ahead and started the thread off on the right note by rating it “one star” lmoa

Caring about your rating might seem kind of "pre teen girl" also. :D

Another (possibly better) question to ask would be:
"Do you let the star rating system affect your judgement?"
In other words, do you avoid threads that are rated poorly or have a lack of respect for people who are rated poorly?
Personally, I ignore them completely. Some of my favorite threads are those that are rated with one or two stars, and conversely, I can't stand some of the 5-star threads. (i.e. How do I throw my MRV)
Keith Johnson may be rated only one star but I give him the same high respect I give to everyone else here on the message board.
You do bring up interesting points though...What is the real reason this stuff is here? Just more bells and whistles?
and i can't beleive i only have two freakin stars!
Well the reason I care with the tourney threads is because I want people to come to the events and have fun. If they are not having fun let me know why - don't just rate the thread bad. It just seems very childish to me...
It is the same thing with rating a user bad… Why would you do that? Now I know why someone like neondoodle or smackspammer would be rated bad because they are always saying controversial stuff, but come on… Grow up if you want to give someone a low rating because you don't like them. If most people vote that they like the star system, I'll just live with it. I just personally hate it - and no, I have no clue why I care :D
C'mon Gimp, you can't really be letting this bother you can you? People who come to your events and have fun will tell others, and they won't use the star system in the conversation. :D
Its just a goofy bell/whistle that means absolutely NOTHING.
BTW, I rated this thread 1 star. LOL! :D
thanx for the added star, whomever gave it to me!
Ditto someone boosted me from 2 to 3 stars today also.....lol
Someone loves me!!! YEAHHHH!!!!! yak
Heck, folks dislike me in large numbers, and I still have a 3. Life's good. :)

First let me tell you why I have a problem with you and then I'll address the star rating system. You are an admitted roller queen and I'm a homophobe, o.k.? Don't flaunt it and I'll get over it. :D
I like the whole pre-teen girl star system probably because it is so pre-teen. The only thing I don't like is not being able to change my vote. I don't want to be able to flood the ballot box. I just want to be able to revote on some people or some threads from time to time. O.k., now I'm giving myself up as one of the pre-teen minded folks who is voting! :D

YOU CAN CHANGE THE RATINGS YOU GIVE NOW!!!!
They enhanced that feature a while ago.
Please go back and give me 5-stars. You're welcome. :)

Man, I was going to go home early and pack for my trip to Chicago, but now I have to spend the afternoon re-rating everyone. Like Jen: I'm so totally over what she did at the Pie in the Sky; I should go give her a few stars! And all those juveniles posting smack on the tag challenge thread. Can we give negative star ratings?

Negative stars for Adam's kid. :)
Tony, who did you make mad? I gave you 5 and you're down to just 2. What gives? Somebody viewed as a "bad guy" (me) has more stars than you? That doesn't seem right. You're much more entertaining than me. :)

I wasn't going to post here but I tend to like underdogs and since this thread only had one star I figured I had to. Nice Ace this weekend Gimp! I told you I could make it rain. :D
i personnally don't care one way or the other,if i did my hair would be grayer then it is now.i've had people give me a bad rating for something i said in a thread, then i notice they have a 5star rating w/one rate(wounder who rated them) we all know the answer to that question because weve all did it ourselves (lol) bottom line it doesn't matter what other people think about you,it's what you think about yourself that matters :)

There ya go AP. You're back up to 3 now. You're welcome. :)

I'm not sure the stars are any cheesier than the titles we "earn". :D I would agree that the personal stars are silly, but that thread stars have some merit to indicate threads others have found interesting, informative, or entertaining. Perhaps the "flame of activity" could be replaced with stars based on the number of posts or views. The more of either indicates that the thread is doing one of the three things mentioned above.

I think the flame should be limited to activity within the last 24-48 hours, not total activity. Say anything with more than 100 views and 20 posts in the last 48 hours.
I was curios as to what your opinion on flame activity was Gary! :o:D:o:D
Hey Josh, what's that avatar of yours using as a putter? An Optimizer? :)

Something extremely understable.
Who moved this thread up to two stars - COME ON PEOPLE GET WITH THE PLAN - one star only for this thread please :D
hmmm...i keep meaning to put some more work into it, but i always seem to be too lazy...it is supposed to look like i am putting away so it is kinda up hill...If i could get the animation program to load at work I could work on it some here, but for some reason i can't install it, so for now its just a sily looking putt...So i resemble the silly putting stick figure- somewhat. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I should try to make the putter wobble like all my putts...
Don't get me wrong, I already told you I love it. It rocks. I just had to razz ya about the understable putter...because I'm a natural born smartass. :)
well there is an understatement!!!
well there is an understatement!!!

O.k., I was not going to say this before but I'm in more of a prickly mood today. And this is not directed against Rhett, but is an amplified form of agreement with his opinion. I noticed that 20% of respondents want the star system removed unless they can see who voted for them and how.
WHAT KIND OF A WUSSY HAS SELF-ESTEEM SO LOW THAT HE CAN'T LIVE WITH THE THOUGHT OF SOMEONE GIVING HIM A 1-STAR RATING UNLESS HE KNOWS WHO IT IS?" Grow up and lose the blankie already.
If you disagree, go secretly give me 1-star, WUSSIES!
That felt good.
If you disagree, go secretly give me 1-star, WUSSIES!
Done. :D

Double Done!!
And the crash and burn phase of Bruce's star rating has begun. :)
I gave him one star and it didn't lower his rating. I couldn't make a difference and now all my self-esteem is gone. :(

I kind of suspect for every WUSSIE who cannot cope knowing that someone might be secretly rating them 1-star, there are three normally adjusted human beings laughing at them and giving me my stars back! :D

wow, you are really a solid three. Even reversing my 5-star rating of you to 1-star (purely for investigative purposes) didn't drop you to two! :)
(I put you back to 5-stars, BTW.)
Maybe I'd make a better test case, Rhett. I can't remember ever being more than a three.
Everyone who's ever been offended by anything I might have said, or ever wanted me to shut up (that should cover it), go right now to my profile and give me one star!

Gave you 5 stars, you changed to 3 stars.
I put it back to 1 so as not to hurt your experiment.
