Has anyone heard of how the "PDGA coordinates volunteer PDGA marshall attendance." Just curious if that has gone well or badly for anyone?

I am suprised that no one has heard about this or seen this in action since it is one of the new requirements listed for tournaments B-tier and better.
Hope someone can answer my question.

I'm pretty sure the marshall's got their tourney assignments when they were sworn-in.

not sure, I thought N.T was the only event status that required a marshall.

NT and Major? I know the "selected A-tiers" were all early A-tiers and that the marshalls were supposed to help with the PDGA registrations since so many people typically renew at the tourneys.

If you go look at
http://www.pdga.com/documents/td/04TourStandards.pdf
and scroll down to the bottom of B-tier tournaments it says what I said on the first post. I am just curious if anyone has any new info?
Peace,
Doug

Gotta remember guys that we're not always reading all this stuff.

I was a marshall for the Gentleman's Club Challenge, which I took on because it meant that I only had to come out west a couple of days early before the Summit and I thought that as a board member it would be good to get the experience in first hand.

My understanding is that marshalls are going to be at all NT events and at "select" A-Tier events, primarily early in the year so as to help the TDs with the PDGA membership renewal work.

Marshalls assist with that, represent the PDGA, do and/or assist with live scoring and the required technology for it, are going to be helping to hawk some PDGA-branded merchandise, write stories about the event afterwards, if they can, and, oh yes, *if* the TD wants them to, can take over the TD's role as the final arbiter of rules decisions, including DQs.

There was a marshall at the Gran Canyon events, I think but I am not sure that Kenny Climo may have been the first one, and that for the second one (Pro) and probably the first one, too, the role of the TD regarding rules implementation stayed with the TD.

There was a marshall at a couple of Maceman's events in Texas, then me in Las Vegas, and then Andi Lehmann did the Ams and Jon Lyskett the Pros at The Memorial.

I can't speak for others' experiences, but in my case I felt that I was able to be of assistance in a number of ways and that the TD, his staff, and the players respected me and were glad that I was on hand.

I gave two Open Men players courtesy violation warnings, but each time they accepted it well and without rancor, and I think that my presence helped keep the tone calmer than it might have been during that terribly cold and wet final round in Las Vegas. (I am not publishing who got a warning, but one was for kicking a tee block into the air followed by a slam into a bag after a bad couple of drives, and the other was for loud and repeated use of the F-word in reaction to similar bad play/bad luck.)

The job of marshall, as it currently stands, is one that promises to be quite valuable and I expect a lot of A-Tier TDs to request one, but it is a *lot* of work for one person and there will be some juggling of responsibilities to make it all work smoother in the end. I still have some reservations about the cost of it to the PDGA, which is not cheap although the marshalls are not well paid, but it is definitely a step in the right direction for assisting TDs, having a stronger PDGA presence, and with regard to rules enforcement, especially among the top players.

Not me, I am not anywhere near the loop of the Marshalls.

I've been waiting for Larry Kruse or Ray Murray to jump in on the thread since they were the marshalls at the Big Show events.

Hey Doug,

I'm a Marshall and a TD of a B-tier event, (shameless_plug) 2004 Capitol of Texas Open, May 15-16(/shameless_plug).

I have not heard how the PDGA is coordinating "Volunteer PDGA Marshall attendence." That would probably be best answered by someone on the BOD or maybe someone who was at the Summit could let us know if the topic was discussed. I was just going to volunteer for this Waterloo event :D

I agree totally with you Terry on these points.

BTW Jon looks more like a pirate in that Summit Photo :D

Everyone,
I got an official reply from the PDGA and they said that it was a hope that they would be able to do that for B-tier and up this year but they are not going to be able to. They are going to focus on the NT and Super tour events and see how that goes. I think it is a good idea. They did mention that if you had a specific request for a marshaller to Dave Nesbitt if you want. Glad to see the PDGA is taking it one step at a time and maybe I will contact Dave (He lives about 2 miles from my house.) Thanks for everyones input.
