Bored Review: 7-29-04
By Mark S on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 08:24 pm:
I did go out to the course, pretty big lake on 14. New wood patterns on hole 6, minior and some major water on a lot of the course, a fair amount of debris washed up all along the creek on the back side. The logs lining 14 were mostly washed down to near the creek.
By Mark S on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 06:03 pm:
The course has dried up!
That would fall into the miracle category I believe. :D

WOW! I read your post on the hawkgammon vs. md21954 thread... may I say that your write-up of today's events were both informative AND emasculating? All in one fell swoop- how ever do you do it? ;) :D

Saturday the <font color="red"> Tour </font> will be making it's first official stop in Delaware at the Delaware Cross-Town AM Championship.
Are you an Am?
Do you want to be a champion?
Then come explore two unknown (to me at least) courses at White Clay Creek in DE, and then Anson B. Nixon in PA.
It's not just a cross-town, but also a cross-state!

DE Crosstown AM Report.
A suprisingly small field of 20 players were present for this event. This could have been caused by people going to Worlds, but apparently it was played last year in a torrential downpour, and some of the guys I played with said that might have kept people away.
I saw Dr. Rob, and Trevor W. there. It was run by the Senator.
The first course was White Clay which fooled me. The practice holes I played 1,2,3, 17 & 18 were all relatively short, so I thought this would be a breeze. Rob warned me that there were bigger holes on the back, and he was correct. One of the things they like to do here and at the other course (Nixon) is put the basket in a tight circle of trees (say five feet around) or right on the edge of some other unpleasantness. I played at White Clay with Steve H., Adam V. and Jeff "Boomer"" M. Thanks to Boomer for guiding the three of us from DE to PA. I had Rob as a back-up tour guide! :DOur round at White Clay was cool as some of the holes are short, and then longer and wider, but still fairly narrow. I ended up shooting a 58 to Adams 51 , Steve's 56 & Boomers 59 :(. Then we made the 30 minute commute into PA where we got food and fuel.
At Nixon the Senator had us do a little putting contest into a Skill Shot prior to the round. This was won by Steve who by the way plays while listening to his MP3. :) Adam and Whitey from PA tied for second and had a playoff after our round. Trevor and I scored a disappointing 10 points to Steve's winning score of 35.
Nixon is a wild course. Some of the holes are obscenely long. White Clay had one that was 550', and I think a couple of the Nixon ones were close, and they could have been longer according to my tour guide Boomer. The other diabolical part of Nixon is that several of the holes are under 200', but they are tight! I'm talking three-four foot windows. There is one hole on the front nine that is particularly interesting in that it's got pet graves all over it. There are markers for Rover 1945-1958 etc. I ended up shooting another 58 which should have been a 56 but I yanked to sub 10' putts . One of which was on the last hole and cost me the tie with Steve for I believe 5th overall in Advance. The Senator has us play with the same group at Nixon as we did at White Clay. Steve shot a 59, Adam and Boomer both had 53's I believe. Adam was the big winner with Rob coming in second. I could have won Rec! :DI'm not sure how these results will help me in the bet but anything is probably forward progress.
Both courses are worth checking out on a day trip, but I'd probably give the nod to Nixon as the more interesting of the two.
Anybody wantta play hookie from work tomarrow and hit Seneca ???

hey all yall squareheads,
4 intrepid discers shot from the metals (on a woods week due to weather) in driving rain for the front nine, no rain on the back nine. $5 buy in for TND was called. we flipped, teams = yours truly and superfreak tom e vs. sunday morning ultimate regs john and jay. jj got off to a hot start and was one up through three. tom carried me for the rest of the front to tie us at -4. i contributed some long putts and a deuce on twelve and thirteen as we decided to run away with it on the back. final score -8 to -5, team paul/tom e threeup.
all four contributed to the ace pot, no aces, the ace pot starts at $217 from the metals next week.
see you there soapmonkeys.

am tour stop at ... you guessed it... druid hill. 27 holes (woods plus x-holes) in pleasant temps. glen, norm and myself. i was 2 strokes ahead of a hungover glen after 4 plus the first six x-holes. finished plus 9 for the whole deal (one better than my longs score not including the x-holes at the open. ughh.. glen beat me by 2-3 and norm came through witht the old school mojo and tore us up. was right around par for the whole deal.
50/50 on rockburn tomorrow. 50/50 on the houndog. 100% on the rockburn challenge. wap wap awaits. i think i was plus 4 on the total for the x-holes.

<font color="blue">BOYD AND SMOKIN' JOE TIE :( AT ROCKBURN TOUR STOP </font>
<font color="green">Injured Tour Commissioner Forgets To Have Them Play-Off For Win </font>
Six of us started off this afternoon with only five of us finishing, and it was almost only four.
Breaking up into two groups of three, Smokin', Ski and Greg headed off to #9 (Greg was never seen again!) and Rich, Bill and I teed off on #1.
My drive on #1 went into the rough on the right, and then my attempted anhyzer stalled out and ended up left. Walking over there I stepped into a hole and fell twisting my ankle and respraining my right wrist. :mad:At that point I was done for the round. Boyd was hot and cold with two deuces and three fours on the front nine. Rich hit a bad spot going 5-5-4 on holes 6-8. I took a spectacular circle 6 on #9 when I hit the creek for the first of two times in the round. :(
Meanwhile Joe is running hot and cold just like the course "pro", and Ski is racking up some impressive circles of his own. A double circle six on #15  :o, and a single circle on #18. As this group hit #18 Service vanished. Ski and Joe reported hearing a scream and turning around, but Greg was gone. They played on. :)
Back to our group, and as we started the back nine, Rich is four strokes behind Bill. I'm just out taking a walk and throwing stuff haphazardly. Rich begins to reel Bill in by picking up one stroke on holes 10-12. Before Bill can actually crumble under the pressure though, Rich hits another skid, and goes 5-circle 4-4 on holes 13-15 giving Bill his cushion back. Rich's five on # 13 was frightning as his forehand drive sailed dead straight and long into brush that I've never seen anyone venture into. His second shot was a nice recovery, but reeling from the search and rescue mission, he three putts. :oHe follows that up by putting his new shiney driver into the cedar that guards the left side of the gate on #14. Not to be outdone I took my own circle five on #15 when I turned over my drive and ended further right and in the creek than I have ever seen anyone go before. Also on #15 Boyd ended up to the left and throws a blind second shot that ends up resting against the pole! :cool:With all this I actually managed to stay within two of the guys on the back nine! :)
In what is now a twosome Ski takes a straight 6 on #7 :o:eek: but matches Joe with a deuce apiece on the front.
Final scores were:
Smokin'-61 (#'s 3 & 13)
Boyd-61 (3 & 7 )
Ski-63 (5 & 13)
Rich-65 (3)
Hawk-70
Service-999
Scores are questionable in that our group played #18 long, while the Joe group played 18 short. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
We came across Ski's close personal friend Ben on #7, and with his stick wielding karma following us we set a record finding/coming upon six discs during our round.
The guys did a substantial amount of work on the wood holes getting the knee high rough down to shoe height. There was talk of some cleaning up work to come, and a complete mow of the course days prior to the Challenge. Boyd also threatened to freshen up the tees to please Mr. Gangloff who was out there with a group of his own.
Shockingly I spotted Billstream and Joe hitting a "package" store after the round. ;)

<font color="red"> 2005 Tour Cards </font>
I've already begun design work on these for distribution in late December/early January. This year I gave them out to just about anybody in the state who had a disc golf pulse. Next year I'm going to reward the 10 most active Tour participants with cards. Nothing like a little elitism. :cool:Everyone else will simply be jealous and on the outside looking in. So in essence you need to earn your card by playing. :)
I've tallied up everyone's participation so far this season, and the top ten participants are listed below:
Hawk-37
Shark-19
Rich-19
Paul-15
Boyd-13
Ski-12
Glen-11
Service-8
Felty-7
Smokin' Joe-5
Paxton-5
There's a bunch of other names on the sheet which I'll continue to tally up until about mid-December. Right now these players will have the most talked about membership card of 2005, and a cherished collectible! ;)

Actually you're the second since I told Rich while playing yesterday that I would be coming back out sometime on Sunday after yesterday's debacle.
I'll post a time Saturday night after I/we get back from the Howler as I'll know if I want to get up early, or play late. We might have an unusually late kick-off! :)
Late would be GREAT, say around 1345 HRS. 1400 would be mo-betta as that would afford some warm up time...

<font color="blue">NO SPIN WINS ROCKBURN CHALLENGE TUNE-UP TOUR STOP :) </font>
<font color="purple"> Ras Disc Cruises In For Second </font>
<font color="red">hawk defeats paul in great rec battle preview ;) </font>
10 of us showed up at noonish today to walk the Rock, and enjoy a perfect disc day. Course pro Boyd arrived sporting a hamstring injury he incurred while tubeing. Perhaps he should try less dangerous hobbies like napping. He gamely tried to go, but ended up bailing out. Upcoming Rockburn Challenge TD Rich Myers arrived late (hopefully not foreshadowing for next weekend) with Not Boyd Bill (NBB) as our two groups had teed off their first hole. Rich and NBB went ahead of us to hole 2. Our group (Paul, Smokin' Joe, Shark, and myself) started on #1, and the Jim's group (Myers, Brazil, Boyd and Jesse) started on #18.
Paul and Shark were struggling mightily out of the gate. Joe and I were playing rather well. Mark got the first deuce of the day hitting #3 :), and then Joe deuced #5 . Paul's rough start hit a low point on #8 when he yanked his aqua blue CE (yes CE not C) Valkyrie into the right side woods about a third of the way up the fairway. A brief search and rescue mission proved fruitless. Circle five. :( Joe joined the circle club on #9 when his drive got wet. While attempting to retrieve it, he nearly went into the creek, but I managed to catch him. We got the disc and remained dry. Circle four.
Meanwhile the other group started with fours and fives on #18 (long pin) before JM and Ras deuced #3. :) Gimpy Bill skipped #4 and then both Jim's and Ras deuced #5. JM finished their front nine by deucing #8 :cool:after taking a five on #7 . Boyd bailed for good at #8.
In the twosome Rich and Not Boyd Bill where threeing and fouring their way through their first nine holes with Rich taking a five on #9, and NBB matching that with a five of his own on #10.
After nine various holes things were standing at:
No Spin-27
Ras Disc-28
Jim B.-29
Hawk-29
Rich-30
Smokin'-31
Not Boyd Bill-34
Mr. Calvert-36
Paul-36
Boyd-DNF
Our back nine started badly as I took a five on #10, and Paul followed that up with a five on #11. Paul then took a circle four on #12 when his second shot ended up above 2m's in the evergreen near the basket. :( Mark then began his move on me by deucing #13 with a spectacular park job driving to within two feet of the basket. :cool:At #14 we were joined by Kinder Farm's very own Tim Ski who was sporting the shirtless look allowing us to admire his unique chest hair. Something not to be missed! ;) Ski did declare that he was willing to bet $20 that he finishes (I'm not sure if I recall this correctly :() either in the top five of Advanced at this Saturday's Rockburn Challenge or it might have been in the top 20%. Bettors might want to contact Ski here to get the specific wager details. On #15 Joe got wet for the second time by driving into the creek. Circle four. :(. Things got incredibly ugly on #16 when my drive kicked waaaaaaaaaay left into previously uncharted territory. Upon locating the disc Paul described it as, "The worse lie I've ever seen " Ski was equally horrified and Mark was thinking come back. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Enduring what I believe turned out to be stinging nettles, (multiple severe burning sensations on both legs after coming into contact with something in there) I had to take a stance and then throw backwards to the fairway...twice. :oA great fourth  shot saved a six. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
The Jim's group was now a threesome, and they played through us on #11. Ras deuced #12 , and No Spin got #13. Brazil deuced #15. :)
The twosome wrapped up their second nine with NBB deucing #13 , and Rich getting a circle four on #15. I suspect he went swimming. :(
Second nines scores saw me falling to the back of the pack after my four throws forward and two back on #16.
Jim M.-26
Ras Disc-29
Mr. Calvert-30
Rich-31
Jim B.-32
Smokin'-32
Not Boyd Bill-32
Paul-34
Hawk-36
Final damage was:
Jim M.-53
Jesse-57
Jim. B.-61
Dr. Evil-61
Joe-63
Hawk-65
Shark-66
NBB-66
Paul-70
Boyd-999

Your blatant atempt to try and stack the deck against us is futile. Even if some rookie shows up with some skills, I'll just Paxton them with rules. I am a certified official. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm sure there will be some foot faults and practice throws going on. ;)

As the good Dr. said, I am merely playing my rating. I think most of us play above our ratings all the time as it is "cool" to be with the big boys. I was telling Rich on the ride back from That Of Which We Don't Speak that part of the problem with this sport is that there is too much investment in everyone winning. Way too many divisions etc. If there were just one AM division and I was ending up 20th each week that wouldn't bother me. I play merely to compete against myself i.e. move my rating up. Obviously you are concerned that Paul or I might prevail, and then the public will shower us with accolades unlike what you received in your twice removed age protected win. :D

Congrats, but you failed to post empty smack talk prior to the event. ;)
I went out to Goucher today for a private training session. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Good news for everyone who loves those cinder blocks at the back of the tees. The tee signs have been installed, and they are flat plates flush with the tee surface replacing the cinder blocks. They sport a G and what I assume is Gouchers mascot. It appears to be a gopher. Perhaps a beaver. Definitely some member of the rodent family. Also the yardage to the permanently installed basket, and a rough diagram of the path to the hole. It looked pretty good. The alternate tees are still hit or miss in terms of being marked. I did manage to deuce #8 twice for you Goucher veterans, and I hit the roof of the brown outbuilding on #5 :cool:which then skidded across the roof and down the other side barely missing the bus, and ended up in the parking lot under the air conditioner units. It gave me a good look, but is OB. :( Just me and an older couple throwing some lids out there this afternoon. I suspect they were spies working for Paul. :D

Wow, what a day!! :D
What AWESOME courses! What AWESOME people! Clint, you're the greatest. (Jay and Bill aren't too shabby, either) I had so much fun, everybody around me was having so much fun, I really FTL of Codorus. The payouts were BIG...
...But Clint has a heart even bigger than the Candyman's payouts. There were some novice ladies there, playing their first tournament- and they each got a scrip worth $8. One was looking at a small disc golf bag, the other a sweet Pro-line Leopard... and if it had been anybody else "shopping", they would have had to kick in some extra cash to cover the difference in value. But he just shushed those girls' money away- and made their day. Made my day, too. Those girls have only been playing for a month, but I'll guarantee that one little act of kindness keeps 'em coming back forever. For that, Clint, you've earned a pedestal right next to to the one I keep John Biscoe on- and that's the highest disc-golf compliment I can give!
Oh- and did I mention, there was over $200 raised for charity? Thanks Rich, Rachel, Neil, and all the Codorus golfers who made donations!
I encourage all the Maryland golfers to attend the PDGA Tournament to be held at Codorus October 23rd- If you've never seen the courses, it's an opportunity you shouldn't miss, and an experience you'll never forget. Fantastic!!
I could go on and on, so let me sum it all up-
Wow, what a day!! :D

<font color="red">HAWK </font> DEFEATS <font color="orange"> SKI</font> AT GOUCHER
<font color="green"> Jeff Pop </font> Returns To Tour With The Big Boys
The three of us met at Goucher today to see who could sweat the most. Jeff was already there when I arrived, and he complained about the lack of co-eds I had promised him. Curiously we spotted several out and about right at the announced 1430 tee time. Coincidence or the pull of the Disc Golf Hero? You decide!
Things were going along with the usual slightly annoying threes until the third hole where I overshot the basket on a second shot and ended up in the thorns behind the basket. Goucher might earn the nickname Rockburn Jr. for the caliber of the rough there. I take a four, but both Ski and Jeff even things up on #4. On #5 I parked my drive two feet from the basket for the first deuce of the day. :cool:At this point Jeff was riding an unpleasant string of fours. On #8 I deuce it for the third round in a row :D, while Ski takes a four. :( Ski bounces back magnificently on #9 though were he cranks his drive directly over the basket and hits the trunk of the tree 10' behind. A deuce for Mr. Orange. :)
Scores after nine were:
Hawk-26
Ski-28
Jeff-30
Staying hot Tim deuces #10 . Things are threeing along for the most part until #14 where I failed to repeat my good drive of the first rotation, and I hyzer into the parking lot behind the facilities building. If the bus had been there I would have hit it and probably stayed in bounds. Circle four. The match is now tied. Onto #15 Ski's drive is short, and his approach leaves him with a 15' uphill putt. I mention to him casually, "Whatever you do don't miss and roll down the hill." Naturally Ski misses (he hit the right side chains which is like us normal people [right handers] hitting the left side) and it trickled past. Ski looks away, and Jeff and I watch it catch an edge and make a u-turn and roll down the hill behind a tree. The rare Goucher five. :oSki takes another four on #17, but deuces #18 for the second time. :D
Final scores were:
Hawk-54
Ski-56
Jeff-59

<font color="red">Hawk Defends #16 Tag Against Randy O. & Willie </font>
I went out to Druid today to simply play the most casual of rounds, but there was Randy looking for a round. After warming up my putting with my wind putter the Classic Aviar I agreed to throw a round with Randy who elected to play the metal tees. Rockburn Challenge Rec Runner Up John was there, but clearly he wanted no more of me! ;)
In an almost erie repeat of yesterday's disasterous missed putt and roll by the Skister, Randy is putting for a three on #1 and hits metal and rolls back down the hill. This initiated a rough start for Randy as he went 5-4-5-4-4 through the first five holes. I was threeing along during this period.
Randy caught fire on #6 when putting for his three from about 65' he nails the putt! :cool:He threed out the rest of the front nine. I managed to deuce #8 after Spidering down within 10'. Scores after nine were:
Hawk-26
Randy-34
After a brief break to restock water etc. Randy started the back nine a little roughly going 4-5-4. On #11 we both were short of the turn and ended up in the woods. I took the yellow Spider and threw an annie out a hole in the foliage, and neither Randy or I ever saw the disc, but we watched the shadow go along the ground and disappear into the woods where the basket sat in the c pin position. Upon entering the woods I was parked for my three. :cool:On #12 we both took fours and then we matched each other the rest of the way out.
Final scores were:
Hawk-55
Randy-66

However this would be a way for us to introduce ourselves and our concerns to the powers that be. Unfortunately Rachel is unable to come up with my normal appearance fee (which obviously has gone up with my recent PDGA win [attention Codorus people! :D]) so I'll be doing my high ranking government official thing on Saturday. Nonetheless I encourage Paul, Rich, Ski and everyone to journey out there on Saturday and pitch in a little bit. :cool:If you contact SBER in advance that you're coming they'll feed you. I did one of these Rouse Day projects with Christine a couple of years ago so I know of what I speak. Curious afternoon at Seneca. There were a ton of guys out there playing in something called the Dog and Goat Tournament. Apparently this was a casual tourney for new players to get their feet wet. Several of them told me there were thinking of playing the Mid-Atlantic. They mentioned this while bowing worshipfully as I played through.
There were only two scary moments.
1. While playing #8 I see a group comprising of JG, JB, DJ, T2 and Gawler teeing off on #18. Think of a group of guys busting out of prison, and you have a good image of what that looked like.
2. On #14 I nearly deuced from 125' out hitting chains and nearly causing the group who had let me play through to soil themselves, and charge me in excitement.
Ended up shooting 56 from the blues.
