View Full Version : PDGA Online Schedule Suggestions

Nov 08 2003, 02:32 PM
We are in the midst of revamping the current online schedule facility, which is located under the 'PDGA Tour' link at the top of the page. We have some great ideas on what to change and enhance to make the schedule more useable to the players for researching up and coming (and older, past) events, but would like some more insights.

Instead of taking a poll of what people like and don't like (yet), I'd first like to get a 'brain-dump' from you of your wish list. Depending on the amount of feedback we get (and time to develop), we may have to cut them down, but at this point, fire away!

Jason: Better search capabilities/options might be pretty cool. Let's say that I know I'm going to be in Dallas next month, what might I be looking at in that region for tournaments? Trenton in this January? How about a search by city with a radius option?

In glancing at the directory on The PDGA Tour link (http://www.pdga.com/sched02_state_search.php) for States, I notice that there are a couple of slots for links to websites and for results. Sure would be great to give us an easy way to update those things...maybe if they were password protected by the TD or something...but I'd like a pointer to the results from this year's.

Ever thought about doing a graphical display that shows pushpins on a US map of the tourney's coming up in the next two weeks? Click on the pins for the details kind of thing?
:D

Seriously... any work amount of work you choose to do on the website is greatly appreciated.

In an effort to promote the PDGA I maintained a calendar of events in the surrounding area at our website (nebdisc.com). It's a tedious effort. The ability to search for specific states in one query would be helpful.

Specifically, a list of events in Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma would be great. I would like to create a link on our page that, when clicked, would redirect to the results of the search for those states in one list, on one page.

This would be beneficial for promotional efforts.

Thanks for asking!

i would like to see the host city/state on the same page as the name of the tournament.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Development is still in the works, so more suggestions are appreciated!!!

I'm also curious how people view/search the tournaments results. Currently, there are two filters, one sorted by date, and one sorted by name. Which do YOU prefer? Or, what would be a more ideal solution for YOU!

Thanks

Hi Jason,

How long does it generally take to see results entered into the database after they have been electronically submitted (TD Report Form)?

Thanks.

Tournament results are processed in batches by the PDGA office every 4 to 6 weeks, and then I prepare them and upload them to the web server. The office attempts to include all events received (without errors) in each batch. Therefore, an event should show up online within about 6 weeks (but as little as one week, depending on timing), unless the report has to be sent back to the TD for additional data.

Jason,
I do a lot of travelling and am not familier with just the name of an event. Being able to search by Date and City/State and somehow being able to look at the event historically with a link(not knowing if this can even be done) would be a dream come true.
Regardless, thanks for attempting to make it better.

Hey Jason
The search by date for tourney results is easier in my book because if you search alphabetically and you don't know the exact name (if the tourney threw a sponsors name in first) you're going to ruin what usually is a bad experience for me anyway by taking a long time to find the long list of people who beat you. :(

I like the search by state idea too. I'm going to add that to the MADGIC TIMES Results search engine this year.

The key is to get entire event results linked to individual results.

I use both of the categories, I usually know the name of the tourny but if not i can get a good idea with the date

The new online schedule went live this past Wednesday (just in time for the year!) Thanks to all the suggestions that were provided above and those I received on the side. We took into account as many suggestions as we could (but the visual map of the US with pushpins I think will be a ways away! [Sorry Larry])

In order to bring up the schedule under certain criteria from a link within a different website, I created the page "search_results.php". You must pass on the query string the key/value pair "search=Search". To filter the schedule, the following keys are allowed:
- startDate (with a value in the format of YYYY-MM-DD (such as 2004-01-01)
- endDate (same as above)
- tier (to filter based on the tiers of the events. These must be capitalized and separated by a comma. e.g. A,B,C,D.)
- state (the capitalized two character abbreviation for the state, also separated by commas. e.g. TX,OK,KS,LA)

An example hyperlink: This shows all A and C Tier tournaments for the months of Feb 2004 through April 2004 in the states of Pennsylvania and New York.:

http://www.pdga.com/schedule/search_results.php?search=Search&startDate=2004-02-01&endDate=2004-04-30&state=PA,NY&tier=A,C

As always, if you find any problems, or have further suggestions, please let us know.

Happy New Year and keep 'em straight!

We are currently in the process of incorporating a live tournament results administration system for TDs to use to upload tournament results for on-going events. This allows up-to-the-minute results posting, or, simply end of day posting. This will help publish the information in a standard format, as well as giving players a common place to view/look for new results without sifting through dozens of messages on the board. It also allows for the generation of unofficial ratings based on the current tournament. These ratings will not get used when the official ratings get published, but will be close to the official posting coming in the next month or so (thus the name 'unofficial'.)

How does this apply to the schedule? When viewing the PDGA Tour Schedule (http://www.pdga.com/schedule/index.php), you will see a small trophy next to the tournament name when results (official or unofficial) become available.

The unofficial results of the past few MaceMan tournaments are available, and can be located through the Schedule link above.

This facility is going to be available to all tournament directors in the near future (hopefully within the next 7 days) to publish their results prior to the official posting by the PDGA office. A separate message and thread will be posted when the availibility is extended.

If you have any questions or comments, please respond here.
