View Full Version : 2003 PDGA JUNIOR WORLDS

A major problem for this tournament is SARS that's going on up there.....hopefully they will take care of this. Besides that it sounds like it's gonna be an AWESOME time. Does any1 know who will be playing long tees and who will be playing short tees?

To all those thinking twice about coming to Ontario Canada to play golf, whether it be the World Juniors or the TIO, please understand that SARS is not going to cause a problem. The cases that have contracted SARS are directly related to coming in contact with someone that has it. The probability that you will come in contact with someone that has it highly unlikely, unless you visit one of the hospitals (which by the way have many measures to limit the amount of people entering and exiting).
Toronto is safe, London is safe. If anything the SARS problem has provided opportunities for "out-of-towners" to enjoy Toronto and all that it has to offer. For example, there are many hotels that have been giving discounts for people wanting to visit Toronto and stay (just a thought for the TIO-The Westin Harbour Castle 1-800-937-8461). As well, some of the attractions when you're not golfing have discounts going on.
The only problem you may encounter is crossing the border or coming through customs, but from what I hear the delay is not too substantial.
Please remember I am only a resident of Toronto and not a doctor. I'm simply relaying what has been provided in the local papers.
If you are still worried about SARS, then worry about SARS.
It's not worrying us up here.

Went to St. Thomas last weekend. Border was not a problem at all.

May 31 2003, 07:37 PM
still.......does anyone know who will be playing the long tees at Junior Worlds and who will be playing the short tees?

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding the world Juniors, you can go to www.discgolfstuff.itctv.com (http://www.discgolfstuff.itctv.com) and get some info there, and if you don't find it there then you can contact John Mann the tourniment TD. you can also access the web site through the PDGA site, there are many spots still available, so if you are thinking of coming to play do so.

Jen, my partner and I were 1 and I wanted to get some work done so I took off. I think I drew the fairest partner available on the pro side, if you catch the implication! We had four birdies and five bogies.

Did you find a ride to KC? I went out to their website to see who is playing but they aren't giving that up.

I'm only going as far as Chicago that weekend unless I decide to stay home.

Dusty, I'd send e-mail but that address you have in your profile never works.

Are you going to the USADGC again if you get in on your rating? I don't know how deep Todd will go in a state with only one advanced rated player, but you are #2 on the ratings list for Nebraska amateurs. E-mail me if you want me to stay free at the Windcroft.

I'm not getting into the USADGC. In a state with 40 advanced ams I'm #46. /msgboard/images/clipart/sad.gif Various things kept me out of the regional qualifiers.

Are Kella and Carol coming out for the USWDGC this year? We hope we are bringing even more girls than last year, seven or eight want to go I think. Kelsey has been working on learning a run-up throw and Kira has been working on up-shots. I've been working on making money to pay for it. Go, popstand! Thank you Jaybird, Discraft, Innova and Lightning for donated and wholesale stuff!

I know someone has to watch the cows, but if you do get to Peoria for the USWDGC we should sneak off to play a round. I won't need to walk every round this year.

And, we still owe Kella a putt-of-the-day prize, but don't have a surface mail address.

Just one question: How can U-19 be considered a Junior division?

Jul 12 2003, 10:12 PM
were still in high school = non adults

MTL21676
Jul 12 2003, 11:20 PM
im only 19 and ill be junior in college this fall.....

Jul 12 2003, 11:56 PM
I guess my point is that most people are as big (tall) as they're going to get by the time they reach 16-17 yrs old. I see teenagers cleaning up in the Advanced and even Pro divisions. Just seems odd that you can drive a car, vote and get drafted for military service, yet still compete as a Junior.

Jul 13 2003, 12:19 AM
i see your point. i just think its cool (being in the <19 div) that at the jr worlds kids my age can compete against one another. i hope to be there next year. once again, i do understand your point, but i think its ok for there to be this division for this one event

bruce_brakel
Jul 13 2003, 01:32 AM
The purpose of creating an under 19 junior division is to have a division for high school aged players to play against players of a similar age. The goal is to foster high school competition in a competitive environment that is appropriate for minors. It was a very popular division at the Illinois Junior State Championships last year.

The Waterford Junior Girls Club is going to the USWDGC again this year and have been focussing their fund raising on that. We just couldn't afford to do two big trips this year. We hope to bring more girls this year than last.

ck34
Jul 14 2003, 07:53 PM
Seems like there should still be a separate Junior Worlds to keep the momentum. There's no reason that junior age players can't compete in the Am Worlds or Am Nationals, especially once the Int and Rec divisions are offered for titles. Haven't done the calculations yet but I would guess a high percentage of the participants at this Jr Worlds have ratings within the newly defined Am skill ranges for their gender.

Jul 14 2003, 08:10 PM
different weekends means play in both...however, it would be cool to play alongside the bigdogs at worlds...i dont know which would be better

rhett
Jul 14 2003, 08:37 PM
What was the participant total? How does that compare to the 2001 and 2002 totals?

Since 'aught-four is a "combined Worlds" and the hosts want the juniors too, let's make it combined. More golfers going to one place means more parents can bring their kids and it *should* mean bigger fields for the young-uns.

Jul 14 2003, 09:53 PM
are there any scores for previous years online? thanks, ellis

Jul 14 2003, 10:05 PM
Great idea Rhett! Why not include the kids. How many could there be?

I'm thinking seriously about coming to Am Worlds next year and this would be great. My wife might want to play, as would my eldest son, who would be 14 by then, might like to give it a try. Shoot, my other son would be 12 and might play as well. Hopefully the junior entry fee wouldn't be too much. That would be a great opportunity for all of us to play in one event. Plus, I'd finally get to meet a lot of the guys on the board. We can camp in our pop up, which would make it an affordable vacation type trip. I hope this can happen and we can actually attend.

-Guru was at Junior Worlds the final day and said that Juniors will be included in the Pro/Am worlds.

-The distance competetition was held in 30mph winds, which seriously affected distances

http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournamentresults.php is the address for last years scores

-Note: there were no female juniors this year

-Thanks to Innova for the donations that helped to give Juniors a players pack worth double their entry fee.

-Thanks to all the volunteers(parents and players from the St. Thomas area) that helped at this event

Jul 15 2003, 01:12 AM
Russ,

The junior entry fees in 2000 and 2002 were $100 each. Your kids should be a little bit serious about the game for that pop. But then again, if you are pop-top camping then it shouldn't be a problem! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

rhett
Jul 15 2003, 01:52 AM
I was looking up the entry fees for this years Worlds and noticed that there were 8 competitiors without PDGA numbers. What up with that??? That's over 25% of the field.

I thought there was a requirement that you had to be a PDGA member at least 30 days before Worlds in order to compete?

tdwriter
Jul 15 2003, 02:14 AM
Uh, yeah Rhett. For that kinda money, I think we might all just hit the SNDG Am Championships again! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif $400 for four people? I don't think so. Even with the camping, that would be quite a pop for a golf tournament. Who knows. Thanks for shocking me back to reality. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif rWc

Jul 15 2003, 07:24 AM
I like the idea of bringing the DG family all together, Juniors in Iowa would do it. Alot of players will bring the kiddies (boys and girls)if its a combined event.

Jul 15 2003, 08:59 AM
Perhaps they should consider a package deal for traveling families whose last name isn't Rockerfeller.

I hate to ask this, but if Jr. Worlds entry in 2000-02 was $100, what was it this year in Toronto? How about this year's Am Worlds in KC, what's the entry fee there.

The website is back up...but not updated...yet.

Jul 15 2003, 11:22 AM
It is more likely that both I and my son would attend a combined Jr/Adult Am Worlds than separate events. Neither of us travels without the other to play disc.

I know that's just one vote, but if you are looking for feedback...

bruce_brakel
Jul 15 2003, 11:43 AM
Lower entry fees probably helped attract more juniors to Ontario than higher fees would have. Not requiring players to be members probably helped too.

I know entry fees are an important consideration for our juniors. We hope to go to Iowa with 10-20 kids from our league next year, but we will have to see where entry fees are on the scale of USWDGC vs 2002 Am Worlds. So that's our 12 votes if we're voting: do it with the pro-am worlds and keep it affordable for the kids. ;)

My view is that juniors should play for lower entry fees, cheaper trophies and flatter payouts, than other amateur divisions. If those super-phenom boys and girls want to win a basket, they can play advanced. If they want to play juniors with a lot of other juniors from around the country, they should play for the competition and comraderie, not for big prizes.

Question for the Jr. Parents---

We have heard there have been logistical situations at prior Worlds when a Jr and a parent are both playing on different courses. Would parents feel comfortable with and take advantage of the option of letting their Jr participants take a chartered bus to and from the courses?

While the PDGA has not officially decided the Jrs will be in Iowa with everyone else in 2004, we (the DSM Club) are exploring all options if they are to become officially included. We were thinking if the Jrs (and a parent if they wanted to) signed up for the bus option on their registration forms, we could pursue providing free or low-cost bus transportation each day for this division only.

Thanks for your input!

I'd say send the kids to Iowa in '04 since there is capacity and willingness to integrate, and let other years be determined by circumstances and interested hosts. A changing championship arrangement each year would at least help keep the Junior ranks interesting for those who seek a title.

I'd guess the Optimist folks in Iowa might be nicely placed to set up a "host family" arrangement for travelling kids/families. This would be a great way to beef up the Jr divisions and involve the organization in a great service to the event.

Jul 15 2003, 02:39 PM
I love the bus idea, Becky. If I was bringing an under-10 kid or even an 11 or 12 year old, I would probably stay with my kid. But both times I have brought one of my children they have competed in the under-16 and I would have no problem letting them go on the bus and come back as that would really help the logistics.

I was close to passing out from exhaustion on the last day of PAW2000 because either my son or I had a 7:30 round every single day and we weren't getting back from the outlying courses and dinner until after 10 PM every day. That was just the breaks and we dealt with it, but the bus option would be killer. Last year in Miami I played M1O instead of MM1 so I would be on the same schedule/same courses as my daughter and that worked out, but the bus leaves many more options.

rhett
Jul 15 2003, 02:44 PM
I have to say I really don't approve of waiving the PDGA membership requirement for participants in the PDGA Worlds. Most other amateur sports make you join to participate in anything, let alone the championships. The PDGA paying their memberships after the fact doesn't cut it in my book, or even come close to making it right. This is my opinion, but joining the organization in order to take a shot at the title is not unreasonable in my book.

Mandatory membership for Majors and A-Tiers makes sense to me. Dropping the membership requirements for Junior Worlds, especially after changing things this year so that juniors have to pay the $5 "temp membership" thing for B and C tiers, makes no sense to me.

bruce_brakel
Jul 15 2003, 03:43 PM
You might be able to borrow a bus cheap if you talk to the churches that your club members attend. Some people still go to church in Iowa, right?

I would put our team on the bus if we did not have enough non-player parents to handle our own transportation. The non-player parents might rather follow the bus in a quiet car than try to find their way to the course in a noisy car!

Rhett, I was close to passing out from exhaustion on the last day of USWDGC and I was not playing. Every day I was memorizing local road maps and course routings, helping get the girls to their holes, making lunch, finding our way back to Steak & Shake, running the junior putting contest.

"Oh. Here's the bus! See ya!"

bruce_brakel
Jul 15 2003, 03:52 PM
Becky, at the USWDGC they had volunteers walk with the Juniors to help them find their way around the courses and follow the rules. That was a nice touch. They had volunteers with most groups, which would be too much at Worlds.

Jul 15 2003, 06:52 PM
the bus option sounds great, I hope to bring a 15 yo, if the juniors are included in Iowa. With the large field capacity and local interest and willingness I hope this can become a reality.

I think the bus idea is good. But, the details will need to be done early when players are considering attending. For example, I would not feel comfortable attending with my son unless I was really comfortable with the transportation situation. I would hate for both of us to plan to play, then there be problems where it caused me to pull out (caddy for son) or vise versa. Becky, I think that the majority of the players that would have kids in Jr's would likely be a masters player, so maybe the divisions could be situated at closer courses. Possibly even some staggered start times. After what I saw of the Des Moines courses and help, I'm sure these can be worked out. (thanks again Becky and Kuzi for showin' me around).

To the PDGA - As a member and father of two members, I urge you to return the Juniors Division to the Am Worlds. Why separate the juniors when all the other divisions (masters, women, etc) remain in one championship tournament?

Personally, the Pro/Am Worlds in Iowa is looking like a rare opportunity for myself and my two sons to compete in the same Major. It would be disappointing if they had to stay home, or just watch.

Hats off to Iowa for having the facilities, staff and enthusiasm to host a combined Worlds. Someone said earlier that many juniors will have parents playing in the masters division (pro and am). Consideration of this should be done when making the schedule. The buses sound like a great idea, provided the logistics and any liability issues can be worked out.

The PDGA should also consider keeping the entry fees as low as possible while still being able to have a great event. I'm not sure about my wife and younger son, but I'd love for my oldest to get a chance to compete in an event of this magnitude while it's relatively close to us.

Please consider the cost of attendance for households with FOUR potential players. rWc
