what a great email to get this morning. Megan was just telling me, last night, that all Worlds' should be combined.

Any way they can add Junior Worlds in there, too? Ryan got to play in a 22 dude field in Michigan in <16. I think the fact that all the pros and all the ams combined can bring their kids really helps flesh out the field for the kids.

That is not confirmed. The DM club approved a vote to take on both world championships, but the pdga has not given it to them yet. Flagstaff is also interested, but may back off to 2005 if DM takes 2004.

This is a quote in the [PDGA-Announce] email yesterday from Terry Calhoun, PDGA Board member. I'm not sure what could be more official.

"Team Des Moines" has been awarded the joint Pro and Am PDGA Worlds for 2004.

It's official, otherwise they wouldn't have let me send that email! I tried to post it here last night, as well, but had some technical difficulties with my new laptop.

The Des Moines club will host both Pro and Am Worlds in 2004. The Board was very impressed with their bid, and with Becky Zalleck's presentation at the Summit. Those folks are really organized, with budget and format planning way ahead of what we are used to seeing - the kind of thing we hope to expect in future bids!

The club has early cooperation evident already from the city, chamber of commerce, local tv and print media, etc., and they've got something like 17 courses within 30 minutes' drive of each other.

i wouldn't have answered him if i hadn't received terry's email...becky did not mention it when she was here but i imagine that an approach was made from one side or the other(pdga) since there was no am bid...i'm sure the pdga did NOT want to go thru what happened last year for pro worlds not coming together till the last minute...

I'll tell ya, I can't wait to have all you guys in my backyard so we can put some faces to names. I'm going to be running around snapping photo's and doing interviews for discgolferusa.com (since my chance for qualifying is pretty much shot), so I should be easy to spot. Not that anyone who has met me could EVER have trouble spotting me in a crowd. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Heck, I'm probably going to end up being a TD if Becky has her way. As for the week of Worlds, I'm trying to remember. I think we are planning on August 8 - 14.

Speaking of Des Moines, last week BeckyZ got over 50 trees donated from a local nursery, and the Club installed them at Ewing Park this weekend.

I am looking so forward to playing the Des Moines courses, do you know which courses are going to be added on? I was already planning on heading up to play in the Pro Worlds, by waiting list, I am sure /msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif but now I might have to think about playing the Am Worlds in my mom's backyard.

This is great, but I am curious as to what courses you will be using to add on. Newton?-too far away?-Indianola?-JK's home course?-Ames? Altoona? Madrid-/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Which brings up the old Iowa 12-15 hole disc golf courses, do you need extra baskets to create the 18 hole experience?

I am so looking forward to spending my summer vacation next year in my mom's living room in Des Moines. What a great use of vacation time! At least my mom will be happy to see.....well my daughter!

Are there any other parents and junior organizers out there who would like to see a combined Pro- Am-JUNIOR Worlds in Iowa in 2004?

The Waterford Junior Girls Club is heading to Peoria this fall, but going to Iowa next summer would be maximum fun!

Don't even ask me what I think about Canada right now!

Ok, take this all with a grain of salt, because I don't think we have a final decision yet, but here are the proposed courses:

Big Creek
Ewing
Grandview
Walnut Ridge

Additions and possibilities:
Ewing II (27 hole course across road in other half of park)
Pickard
Moffitt Resvoir (27 hole course)

Ewing II is pretty much a given. The other course is still being hashed out.

Again, this is all from memory, but this is pretty close. If memory serves Pro's wouldn't play grandview, and Am's would miss Big Creek.

I hope I don't get struck down by lightning for saying all this. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Negative, I know it is along the Raccoon river from my searching the internet, but I knew of nothing involing a course. The Raccoon goes through quite a bit, so I am guessing that it is close to Ames, but not real sure. I was just wondering, because I did not know about a new course up there.

Also when is the new Ewing going in. You guys are awesome baby!

Moffitt Res. is on the SW side of West Des Moines just west of I-35. No permanent course there but has been the site of a temp course about 10(?) years ago.

Please note that we are currently in the brainstorming phase and nothing discussed here has been finalized.

I thought that was the case, over by the new housing area, the richlands just north of highway 5, correct? I remember hearing something about the course, and we drove and drove looking for it about 6 years ago when I was visitin g my mom from Chicago.

I realize that nothing is truly finalized, and I am eager to get to know what courses are being thought of. No need to trump the cards yet!

I have to get ready for our small number of guests myself. Very good to hear that you guys accepted the oppt to do both. I know that the people of Iowa will do everything they can to make it a great event!

Any way to incorporate one of the towns with a RagBrai night? Or is this too late after Ragbrai to think about?

Am I obnoxious or what?

that was my point /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif...since the courses are close to each other and tourney central i won't need to drive 1 hour on the expressway back to the hotel or just drive over to the "tent" after finishing the round after 8 pm

Pro-Am-Jr worlds at the same time/place in 2004? That would be great! I've often hoped the various worlds would be combined again so my boys and I could all play at the same major.

Count me in for 1 pro master, 1 jr (under 16) and 1 jr (under 19). Iowa sounds like a great place for disc golf!

Since this is all rumors anyway, how about the new Ames course and using the then 2 Ames courses. I'm guessing they are way closer to Walnut and Big Crack than Moffitt.

And Keith, Becky had written me stating that she didn't want anyone talking about the possibility of Am worlds just a few days before this came up. In fact a thread in which I asked the question on the DM website was deleted. That's why I said nothing was definite, but alas you are way further in the loop than us mere mortals.

Not really. You have to think from the host hotel It's a 20 min drive at most to moffitt. From those other courses it still only adds another 10 mins or so to the drive. Ames is still over 40 mins. Pickard on the other hand would be closer to 45 mins as well. The bypass helps that out some, but I can go from West Des Moines to Ewing in 25 mins on the bypass. So another 15 mins to Indianola isn't actually that hard to imagine.

Actually I think baskets are covered. The nice thing is that they are letting us put in permanent sleeves at Ewing II. It should be only a little push in the right direction to allow us to put in a perm course after all this. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Watch out in Iowa, I ended up getting married there, but I'm happy being back in the south. Where the true golf world runs year round with out falling on your arse from the ice and snow.

Actually, Ewing II is not in yet but we have permission to design and place ground sleeves for either an 18 or 27-hole temporary course across from Ewing. As Jason stated, it is possible we could convince the City of DSM that we need another 18 or 27 holes on a permanent basis, going forward. Hmmmm. Bottom line is that Ewing II will be the fifth Worlds course. Its a no-brainer based on the quality of the area being offered. Trust me, it is SWEET and you can bet we will be making a case for permanent Ewing II after the Championships. We have several options for a sixth course and we have the courses to consider an 8-course format, should that prove to offer the best overall experience. We are still in the process of identifying our options and of course the PDGA folks have a say in the chosen format as well. The very fine 18-hole course at Pickard Park in Indianola, the Ames course(s) (an additional 18 should be completed in Ames by then)and creating a temporary course at Dale Moffit Reservoir are indeed being considered. Just be assured that we are all looking for ways to balance the desire to get a lot of golf in and the desire to have time to get some relaxation and enjoy all the other activities going on around the Championships. Whats up with the juniors in 2004??? somebody please tell me they will be included in the big event in IOWA ?!? to have the pro/am worlds all together and have the juniors seperate (like this year) would really stink...in my humble opinion....Rhett do you have any info on this?...

All rooms are sold out at the Sheraton under the PDGA Pro Worlds 2004 rate. The only available rooms are at least $119 per night.

Let's hope that a discount rate can be negotiated with the nearby Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn.

Ask for the front desk instead of reservations. They send you off to the corporate-wide reservation center that is off site if you ask for reservations, and there is a problem with the group rate right now. I emailed Becky and she is working the issue so it should be resolved real soon.

I made my reservation for one of the big rooms at $20 more a night than quoted on the Worlds web-page but less than the rate quoted out of the reservation center. I feel confident that it will be straightened out this week. You can always cancel, but it's hard to grab a room after they are gone. Ask for the front desk and reserve your room now! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

FYI, I know a guy that owns a hotel on NE 14th st that I haven't talked to yet about rooms. I haven't said anything to the DM crew because I'm not sure anything will be available, but I will look into it when I get to DM this summer.

I talked to Becky and she said that the rate may not have been set up yet by the hotel even though it should be and soon will be. I guess we started to set up reservations sooner that they anticipated. She is on top of it and will post what’s going on soon.

2.
I doubt that the hotel could be filled up so quickly - this is a big hotel and we got the whole thing.

3.
Becky has 2 other hotels next door that will offer similar rates. Details to come. We will have more then enough rooms. (About $60.00 a night for up to 4 people.)

4.
Keep in mind that the Iowa State Fair runs through Aug. 7-17 which is concurrent to the Worlds; Aug. 8 - 14th. Any hotels near the fairgrounds will be booking for that. The Des Moines Convention bureau did tell us though; not to expect any conflicts because most fairgoers
either stay for only the day or camp out; either at the fair or at local camp sites.
If you plan on camping out you may want to make your reservations soon.

As stated earlier Becky Zallek is on top of this and if you know Becky she will not rest until everything is perfect.

6.
Anything that I just said that does not jive with Becky is to be
disregarded.

I hope that everybody makes this Worlds because I have a feeling it could be the best ever.

2004 Worlds on the Radio and Press Release!

DISC GOLF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
SELECT GREATER DES MOINES

DES MOINES, IA – The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) has awarded the 2004 PDGA World Championships to Des Moines. Nearly 900 disc golfers will compete on four different metro area courses during the weeklong event, scheduled for August 8 – 14, 2004.

“This is an exciting and unique event for greater Des Moines to be hosting,” says Greg Edwards, President/CEO of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Few people are aware of what our area has to offer in terms of unique recreational activities such as our disc golf courses. Bringing in the professional and amateur worlds will not only elevate the opinion of visitors from around the country about Des Moines, but hopefully will change the attitudes of local folks who think there’s nothing fun to do here.”

According to the CVB, the PDGA World Championships will use nearly 5,200 hotel room nights and generate an estimated economic impact of nearly $1 million to the community.

The 7-day championships consist of both an amateur and professional division. Each division will have 438 golfers competing, with an estimated total attendance of 2,000 people per day. The following disc golf courses are currently slated for play during the championships: Grandview and Ewing Parks in Des Moines, Walnut Ridge State Park in Johnston, and Big Creek State Park in Polk City.

The CVB in cooperation with the Des Moines Disc Golf Club, the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Office, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Department of Natural Resources compiled the necessary resources and together spearheaded this joint effort to ensure the 2004 Worlds would be hosted in Des Moines.

OK, thanks Special K. I'm really rooting that they combine the juniors too, as my two sons would love to play in a major and check their skills against the best of their age group. A special trip to play a "junior only" worlds is just too much, and since I'll likely be playing in Des Moines, it could be a great family thing!

The PDGA is going to evaluate it after the Junior Worlds in Ontario this year. Becky told me that DM already requested that the Juniors be added, but no decisions are going to be made until after the Worldses are over this year. Send an email to the PDGA and tell them how great this would be for your family! I'm sure we can get the Lindgrens to write in also. That will be three families from SoCal pushing for it.

I'm not sure who to adress it to. I usually just send stuff to office@pdga.com and then Brian forwards it to the right people. I don't know if there's a better address.

I'm really looking forward to Des Moines! Michigan in 2000 was pretty cool, so I don't want to miss nother combined Worlds.

I'm also really stoked at all the community involvement that Team Des Moines has going. This is really going to rock.

We could easily add the Juniors if the PDGA BOD and membership would like. We were thinking they could play four totally different courses than the Pros and Ams. So we would use a total of ten courses!

Hotel Update- The Holiday Inn next door to the Sheraton Four Points Tournament Central is giving us a hotel rate of $62.00 a night!! They have king and standard rooms and an indoor and outdoor pool. It's located on Merle Hay Road, right off of I-80.

The Sheraton's rate is $57.00 a night, but you have to have a 7-night stay minimum to get this rate. At the Holiday Inn, there is no minimum stay. The Holiday Inn's computer system is unable to take reservations more than a year ahead of the event. So as soon as the computers are set up to take reservations, we'll let you know. Brad the Sales Manager told me today they'll probably be ready for reservations 8-9-03.

The Holiday Inn is also offering free hospitality rooms for any Clubs to use. You'll just have to sign up for them ahead of time.

The Iowa Train Keeps Rolling! We are so lucky here to have so many talented disc golfers who are willing to help out. I just received the following message last night. Congratulations on landing the 2004 PDGA World Championships in Des Moines. I've recently become "obsessed" with the game and can't wait for this event. I work for an advertising agency here in West Des Moines and I was wondering
if there was any advertising, marketing or public relations support that our firm or myself could offer. Our company, Porter & Associates has had great success working with PGA golf tournaments and other "one time" or annual events such as the 1999 US Senior Open Championships (which blew away the all-time attendance record), the 2000 John Deere Classic golf tournament (which also set an attendance record) and the 2002 World Pork Expo (which set attendance and exhibitor records), to name a few. Great work on the worlds and all youre doing for the club. I know its alot of hard work and keeping all informed on what is going on. Des Moines Disc Golf Club has to be one of the most organized clubs out there, if its not the # 1 club out there. Keep it up and good luck. Barb and I will be droping by around the last week in May. I was looking over the WFDF World records and it struck me that if players had the opportunity at PAW 2004 in Iowa, some of these records could be broken. Lately, the competition at Worlds has been called Longest Drive because the venues haven't been suitable for running a formal Distance competition. If Iowa has the site, it might be nice to run a formal distance competition. If the Juniors are also there, it appears there are several records that could potentially fall since they have few opportunities otherwise.

No, it's still pretty easy, compared to more traditional disc sports states. I think your boy Chris Sprague has the record at around 465'.

We have a lot of gravity in Iowa.

Chuck, I don't know what is planned, but I would certainly expect an actual distance competition. I was just looking over my job list and there should be a *field events coordinator* assigned shortly. I will make sure they are aware of your request. Personally, I will push for every type of frisbee competition to be available that week. Feel free to email me with any requests until I can give you a more appropriate email address.

There's probably a communications director already in place who will scold me for posting all of this unofficial garbage, but they can't stop me they can only hope to contain me!!

What is that basketball field goal distance crap? I yanked a drive once in a final 9 and it went through a basketball net off of the backboard. It was easily 300ft away. Maybe it's a record for trying to make a field goal. I could break that record on 5 attempts maximum.

TOURNAMENT IN DES MOINES
It is time for the culmination of Iowa's first all-state Bag Tag Challenge. You can buy a tag the morning of if you want to participate.
We will have some good cash/merch added as well.

Bag Tag Finale

WHAT: Iowa Bag Tag Challenge tournament. We will play one round of 18-27 holes with all tags up for grabs. We will then pair everyone according to new tag rank for a skins match on your card for the second round. Each card will have a set amount of skins cash/merch they will be playing for. The better Bag Tag you end up with after the first round, the more skins cash/merch available to your card.

WHO: The Bag Tag Finale is open to any Iowa Bag Tag holder. The cost is $20 with a Tag or $40 without a Tag because you will have to buy one. We will have a Pro/Am split field. Other divisions will not matter because you will be playing with others of the same skill level.

A huge thanks goes out to Yeti and Des for organizing the 2003 Iowa Worlds Bag Tag Challenge. I am excited to report they sold 100 tags and gave a check to the DSM Club yesterday after the finals for $1,500.00!!!

Congrats goes out to Mike Despanas for winning the Bag Tag Challenge yesterday.

Vinnie, it would be great if you could stay at the host hotel. We get $10,000 worth of ballroom and another room we are using for the week for free if we get over a hundred and something rooms filled. The extra room is next to the Bennegin's in the Sheraton and we are using it for sign-in on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Then the hotel is providing a bank of computers in that same room so people can access the web whenever they want.

The host hotel info is on the Worlds web page which you can link to from the front page www.dsmdiscgolf.org. (http://www.dsmdiscgolf.org.) If a group of you are coming, I recommend one of the suites. We are going to have some fun events at the hotel. Actually, Yeti is in charge of bringing in some hot music for the week. There are already ten suites booked at the Sheraton. And you can fit more than four in the suites.

And I don't yet have the info up for the Holiday Inn next to the Sheraton. But they are giving us a great deal for $62.00 a night. We plan on having a couple of outdoor concerts - one on Tuesday night and one on Wednesday behind the Holiday Inn with a portable stage. Both facilities are top notch.

The other thing that I need to make people aware of is the National AAU Junior Olympics are having their 2004 Championships in Des Moines just before our event. Their last day is August 7th. The city is expecting 30,000 people for the three weeks they will be in town. The track and field events are the last week. So we expect many of the rooms in the city to be filled. The Sheraton is holding a certain number of rooms for us until a few weeks before the event. Then they will open it up to the public. So I want to encourage everyone to make their reservations early.

And, the Iowa State Fair starts on Thursday, August 12th. So people will be coming into town for that.

Des Moines is going to be an exciting place!
